Introduction

A message from Mr. Heydinger

Working alongside student House Leaders is a tremendously rewarding part of my Head of House role. Every year the leadership group embark on a journey of self discovery, both individually and as a team. There’s stresses and strains, successes and failure, but also growth and learning at every stage.

Our current group of leaders are a passionate and energetic bunch. They have worked relentlessly every week to ensure that information is shared, teams are organised, photographs taken, notice boards are up to date and that points are scored. In spite of some early events that didn’t go our way, the leadership group has continued to inspire and motivate the rest of the House, and it’s paying off! The mighty Griffin is beginning to stretch its wings and the other Houses look a bit worried

A message from Ms. Cho

Although changes to the House competitions were a little confusing and unpredictable, everyone in Geomun House adapted to these changes very quickly, giving their best and showing kindness in every aspect!

As the weeks went by, I strongly felt that we were working together as a united House, and we certainly demonstrated our unity to the wider NLCS community. Well done, everyone! I look forward to seeing what 2026 brings for us all. Wishing every Geomun member and their families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

House commendations

KS3

Joon Bang G7A

Joon is rapidly establishing himself as a key character in Geomun House. He is full of fun, energy and spirit. One of the photos of the year so far is of Joon vigorously waving the Geomun flag whilst supporting Geomun House during the House football. His 'story to entertain' secured first place, and important points, during the public speaking competition. Both fantastic contributions, but in very different ways. Thank you and well done!

Alex Yim G8B

Alex only joined Year 8 in August. He has the highest number of Character Strengths in the whole of Geomun House (22). He is also second overall in Year 8. An excellent start!

Ivie Lee G8A

Pure Geomun talent! Her performances on the pitch, track, stage, pool are all super impressive, it feels like Ivie could win some of the competitions on her own. Kind, friendly, humble, we are lucky to have her in Geomun House. Thank you Ivie!

Ian Kim G9A

Ian has made some really important House competition contributions this term. His skill and athleticism in the Badminton was impressive and he scored lots of important points, contributing significantly to our overall second place. In the football, his presence and strength in defence had the opposition shaking in their boots. Superb contributions from an increasingly impressive Geomuner!

Sean McKeogh G10A

Sean's bravery impressed everyone at the recent House football competition. He was a real 'presence' in goal and made a number of courageous and important saves that really contributed to the overall success and eventual victory for Geomun House. Equally as impressive was his reading in the 'Book Grab' section of the Public Speaking. He was first in his category, again contributing important points to secure a close second place in the overall competition. Great stuff Sean!

Jinoh Kim G10A

For a long time now Jinoh has participated in House Competition events with a real sense of energy and enthusiasm. He is a 'key character' in Geomun House and the positivity that he brings is infectious and helps to motivate those around him. Great work Jinoh!

Saera Kim G10A

Saera has only been in Geomun House for a relatively short period of time. However, she has been instrumental in helping to address an issue that I've never really felt we've been particularly good at - notice boards. Saera has worked quietly in the background to bring some consisitency to this area of the House, and it's one of those items that is often overlooked. Thank you for taking this on Saera.

Jianna Lee -G11A

Jianna planned, organised and led the House Commercial Dance superbly this year. This is a very demanding leadership role but Jianna performed it with an effective balance of rigour and fun. Thank you Jianna!

Qry Baik G11A

Qry had only been at NLCS for a short period of time before successfully applying to be one of the arts Captains. This in itself is a considerable achievement given the quality of the candidates who applied. She then went on to help plan, organise and lead the House Singing, culminating conducting the whole House during the performance, demonstrating enormous character and courage. Amazing - thank you Qry!

Phillie Kim G11A

Phillie played a huge part in planning, organising and leading the Geomun House singing this year. She worked with a broad range of students, with varied singing ability, and it was clear that her impact during rehearsal time was immediate and effective. Thank you Phillie!

Singing and Glee

Y11 - Q-ry Baik

This year’s House Singing highlighted the strong teamwork and enthusiasm within our house. Despite limited preparation time, everyone collaborated efficiently and adapted quickly throughout rehearsals. Overall, it was an event that captured our shared effort and added to the strength of our house identity.

Y11 - Jianna Lee

This year, leading the house dance ensemble made me truly grateful for the students I worked with. What impressed me most was how they grew - as dancers and as people who supported one another with enthusiasm. They trusted me with patience when I was still figuring things out, and that trust meant a lot. Watching them gain confidence, enjoy rehearsals, and care about our dance meant more to me than winning first place. Thank you Geomun for sharing the stage with me. Good luck Sophia and Tyga!

Message from the new students

Y9 - Cerys Barham-Pasaquira

Since joining NLCS and Geomun house, I have been in awe of how passionate everyone is about House Events. In House Singing, the student-led conducting and organising was very professional and resulted in a skillful performance by our Geomun house singers. In Glee, I watched our Geomun dancers dance wonderfully, synchronised and as a group. In house football I watched Geomun score a lot of goals and play together as a team.I am very proud and grateful to be part of such a talented house full of hardworking teachers and students, and look forward to celebrating further Geomun achievements.

Y10 - Dohyun Lim

Hello, my name is Dohyun Lim. I came from a Korean public school and joined Year 10 this year, so I was initially worried about adapting to the IGCSE curriculum, studying in an English-speaking environment, and living away from my family. However, the students here have been very welcoming, and the buddy system helped me settle in quickly. The boarding masters also support us like family. This school offers many special opportunities, such as WMC, where I can interact with talented students from around the world. I am enjoying school life, and this is just the beginning of my journey to achieve my goals and grow both academically and personally in this new environment.

Winter Arts

Hyemin Kim

Audrey Kim

The theme for my Winter Art is 'Peace and Harmony' because the birds(doves) represent Peace and Harmony. There is also 'Togetherness' because they are helping each other carry the wreath, and if there was not one of them, then the other one would struggle to carry the wreath, so it also implies Togetherness as well.

In this piece, I tried to depict a Christmas street where people congregate organically. In the painting, a calm yet cosy ambiance is created by the lights from the rides and the tree, which illuminate the chilly evening. Furthermore, the street feels alive because people are moving, conversing, and sharing the moment despite the icy air and dark sky.

I made an effort to convey how winter, despite its cold, can bring people closer together, how light appears brighter in the snow, and how a simple street can feel cosy when people gather there. I also wanted to convey a soft sense of unity and goodwill through this scene.

Winter Arts

Elena Rho

I drew a winter house art with a theme, Generosity and Giving.

I drew a young girl wearing a beanie and warm winter clothes, protecting a cat from the snow with her hands in the center to make viewers focus on the main characters rather than other elements. To balance the composition, I placed the trees in the back corners and painted them in a dark color that doesn’t stand out too much, since the cat is quite small and the space above it looked empty. I also added a bit more white snow to prevent the background from looking too plain and to keep the focus on the main characters.

I drew them quite small to give a message that 'Even in a vast, cold world, small acts of generosity can warm hearts and make a difference.' which is related to my theme, Generosity and Giving. I used relatively simple colors in the background to highlight the main characters, so I colored the sky with purple tones(dark but not dull) to give a mystical and dreamy feeling. For me, Generosity gives me a warm, and kind mood so I colored the girl's clothes using warm winter colors to give a kind and gentle impression and the cat with white and baby pink to make it look clean and innocent. In addition, I used white snow covered ground to symbolize the pure and genuine heart of Generosity.

By adding highlights and shadows, I created depth and made the drawing look more realistic, showing that the objects occupy space. I used gradation to make the elements appear natural and smooth, and applied blending techniques to the sky using purple and violet. The sky isn’t very plain because of the various colors, and it also emphasizes the main character by keeping the colors from being too flashy. I drew my drawing with thin, not too dark lines to give a soft and calm mood.

My drawing gives the feeling of winter. Rather than focusing on seasonal things, I wanted to give the authentic feeling of winter. I thought the cool and muted tones of colors and the peaceful and stable atmosphere naturally connect with generosity, making the girl’s generous attitude stand out.

GEOMUN Non Ducor Duco;

I am not led, I lead

The Geomun Oreum is one of three sites on Jeju recognized for their outstanding ecological and geological importance. The other two sites are Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong.

Geomun House is equally recognized as an outstanding house within NLCS Jeju. The 2022-23 victory in the House Competition was founded on a sense of commitment and togetherness. Geomuners thrive in a House that develops independence and resilience in a relaxed atmosphere where friendship, loyalty and trust are paramount to our success. We win and lose as one family and are there for each other; celebrating, commiserating and supporting together.

The griffin is our symbol and they are known for guarding treasures and possessions; griffins are protectors. In heraldry, the griffin stands for courage, leadership and strength; the perfect symbol for a proud and passionate house.
