Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju This week has been very thought provoking but also very enjoyable for our community. I have been delighted with the success of Diversity Week - under the leadership of our Cultural Awareness Committee. We have welcomed visitors, received messages from the wider community, eaten food from around the world for lunch every day and been able to discuss and participate in activities centred around the key issues. Well done for a brilliant initiative!

This followed on from the excitement last Friday of our performance of The Magic Flute with Opera Jeju, Year 8 and our Orchestra. The evening was superb and a testament to everyone’s hard work. The arts at NLCS Jeju are world class and as you will see from this newsletter and other communications we have many more events involving numbers of students over the coming weeks.

The importance of service is highly valued at NLCS Jeju and I would like to congratulate the students, supported by their teachers for their participation in many service activities and the benefits they bring to so many people. In recognition of this we have received some important awards so please look below to find out more about our students.

As you are all aware the COVID-19 situation is changing all the time so we ask you to continue to check emails and messages frequently in the next few days.

DIVERSITY WEEK

Well done to Catherine Wu and The Cultural Awareness Committee who have organised a wonderful inaugural Diversity Week here at NLCS Jeju. Months of planning and organisation have gone into making this week a huge success.

The week started with a special assembly featuring a video HERE with messages from the Ambassadors of Tanzania, Ireland and the US. We also welcomed Mr. Nik Mehta, Deputy Head of Mission - Embassy of the UK, who addressed students on the subject of Diversity. He then toured the School and spoke to students and staff about his career in diplomacy and what makes Great Britain GREAT!

Each day of the week we focused on a different group of countries with activities, music and food.

Special thanks to our friends at Quadra who created a full continent specific menu across the week featuring French Coq Au Vin and Salade Nicoise, American hamburgers and pizzas and Thai Green Curry - to name but a few!

Finally, we thank all our staff and tutor groups who helped create the country boards that adorn the corridors. Such a lot of effort went into these and there will be some worthy winners. The judges are YOU and we’ll announce the results soon.

The Magic Flute - November 13 Mr. Neil Tamlyn and his team collaborated with Opera in Jeju to create a production of The Magic Flute last Friday. Directed by Mr. Ian Peirson, Mr. James Hamilton-Scott, Ms. Natalie Sangster and Ms. Paula Johnson - all our Year 8 students took part along with six professional singers. Our Presto Chamber Orchestra was on stage throughout - conducted by Mr. Tamlyn. The audience was captivated by their professionalism and the passion and understanding in their playing. It was also a community effort with students supporting as crew and Front of House and teachers acting as Stage Managers.

We were able to invite a very small group of parents who were seated in the PAC on the night (socially distanced and in masks). We also Livestreamed to all our community and were delighted to have live viewers in London (thank you to NLCS UK and our governors) and all across Korea! Winter Concerts, Junior School Christmas Cracker and First School Nativity It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Please mark your calendars with some excellent productions coming your way this December. On December 3 and 4 we will have our Senior School Winter Concerts.

Directed by Mr. John Herbison and the Music team, this is an excellent opportunity to hear all forms of music - Christmas favourites, classical, jazz and pop! Subject to COVID-19 developments and regulations we’ll be releasing a limited number of tickets - but we will also Livestream so anyone not able to be in Jeju or secure a ticket can view. The Junior School presents their Christmas Cracker on December 10 at 1.30 and 6.30. Ms. Cristyn Draper will be directing the Junior School children in Year 3-6 in music, singing and dance. Again - a limited number of tickets may be released so we can maintain social distancing. Livestream link is HERE 1:30/ 6:30 Finally - The First School will be presenting a very special Nativity on Tuesday, December 8 at 10.30. Mr. Jordan Brown will be coordinating this and we hope to open it up to some Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 parents and Livestream to those who can’t be there. The link will follow.

Victorian Ghost Stories The Senior School Winter production is Victorian Ghost Stories. This will be staged on December 8 and 9 in Studio 1 at 7.00. These will be intimate performances to create a special spooky, Christmas atmosphere. We will let you know about ticketing very soon. Head of Drama, Mr. Ian Peirson is directing with support from the whole Drama department.

Under The Sea - Year 1 Just before Half Term Ms. Hannah Goddard, Ms. Louise Collier and Ms. Carolyn Moran directed our lovely Year 1 students in a performance of Under The Sea. The children sang and danced and their performance filled our hearts with joy. Costumes were very special and they all enjoyed their morning.

Service Competition Winners Last week we shared many, many stories of Service amongst our students and staff. This week we are very happy to share that several of our student teams have won Service Awards.The Music Service Club and Penguin Village Junk Art project both won awards of 100,000 KRW and both teams have donated their winnings.

They are all very proud of their achievements and three of the Music Service Club sum up the importance of the Awards.

Juyeon - It was a pleasure to be awarded as a group of students who have participated in Music Service Club for such a long period of time. The award was meaningful in a way that it revealed the potential of musical talents to perform the role of community service to a significant extent. As we did so far, we would like to achieve our ultimate goal of expanding the boundaries of our activities through cooperation and mutually advancing the understanding of music, communication and service spirit.

SERVICE Jamie - Providing service with music was a concept that was completely new to me and therefore was challenging at first. But soon, rather than a challenge, the activity became a valuable experience to me as I started to adjust to the activity and put more effort into more diverse activities such as music therapy. I am so thankful to the members of the team, and am thrilled to be awarded this prize with our members of the team who worked together so hard. I have a strong belief that we will always work together as a team, and that we will try harder to provide the people who are in need, with music.

Jun - Music Service Club allowed me to progress both as a musician and as a person. I would like to express sincere gratitude towards my fellow Music Service Club members who worked diligently to create a meaningful performance, Music Service Club teachers who kindly provided us with inspiration and encouragement, and most importantly the amazing audience we have always been so privileged to have.Taking this experience forward in my future life, I would like to seek ways to help my neighbors with the talent, whether it be music, sports, or anything else, that I have been blessed with.

What is CAS? Service also forms part of our IB Curriculum and is a crucial point that must be earned if students are to pass their IB. At NLCS Jeju it is extremely important to us that this is an authentic part of the whole learning process. Ms. Justine Oliver, IBDP Coordinator explains -

Service is an intrinsic part of the NLCS Jeju ethos, and is second nature to many of our students via their participation in CCA and Bryant service activities throughout their school careers.

This continues into the sixth form where the IB DP aims to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. At the centre of this programme is the IB DP core which broadens students’ educational experience and challenges them to apply their knowledge and skills.

CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) makes up a third of the Core and, it is the service side of this where you see some of the more inspirational stories, as well as a solid body of good work. There are many projects that respond to an authentic need with collaborative and reciprocal engagement within the school, local or global communities. Work with single mothers, the elderly and orphanages or recycling and environmental projects are just a few; however, out of the wealth of available examples, we’d like to highlight three.

In these times of COVID-19 student CAS Service teams have kept us in touch with the wider community via their livestreaming service to the school. This was one of the factors that allowed the school to be agile and flexible as it adapted to the global pandemic faster than many other schools.

The NLCS Hub, meanwhile, demonstrates the breadth of our student’s vision. Conceived as a STEM hub for NLCS Jeju, this grew into a destination to showcase the best of all our academic and thought leadership across the global network. While this stage is in the process of being rolled out as a service for our community, plans are already in place as to how this can work as a tool to provide a wider and more democratised access to education.

Most recently, as their CAS Service Project, two of our Year 12 students have been looking to raise funds in order to provide free sanitary products for fellow students. Through this work, they have become aware of this global issue that negatively affects girls’ education in areas as diverse as Glasgow and The Gambia.They are currently considering the options of approaching our Senior Team to provide this to our students as a basic right, how to ensure this happens across the NLCS network and, also, how to extend this programme into the far less privileged local community.

When you consider that each and every service activity is carried out while balancing the demands of the wider IBDP programme, it is truly inspiring and provides hope for the future.

MEDICAL REVIEW

Preview to November 27 We are looking forward to the Medical Review which will take place on Friday November 27 at 6.30 in the PAC.This event is organised by the Medical Society led by Jiho (Joshua) Ha and mentored by Ms. Kym Prichard. Students who are passionate about medicine take part in this competition each year.They work in teams in the preceding weeks and months - researching and considering various medical topics - this year Vaccinations - Reinvention and Restoration in the third millennium. They present their findings to a panel of judges and the final three teams present at the Review itself. We will also have two judges from our parent community - they both work in the field of medicine and we know their viewpoints will be fascinating. As the head of The Medical Society, I would like to invite all of you next Friday - November 27 - to the annual Medical Review. For those who are unaware of this project, The Medical Review is a platform for any students who are interested in field medicine to exhibit their passion. This year, many members have devoted a lot of time and energy to the subject of Vaccinations and some very high quality presentations are ready. Thank you all and we hope that you will benefit from this opportunity and have an enjoyable evening.

Economics Enrichment Week Thank you to our Economics Department for a stimulating Economics Enrichment Week last week.

Particular thanks to Ms. Arunima Paliwal and Mr. Raymond Maher who gave excellent lectures to the Sixth Form students. Ms. Paliwal spoke about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the stock markets. It was very interesting to hear about the factors behind the changes in the stock markets around the world. Stimulus packages, FOMO, an increase in online investors among others. Head of PPE, Mr. Maher spoke about “Paradigm shifts in economics and negative interest rates.�

History Enrichment Week This week the History Dept took the helm organising events and activities to engage our students.The week started with a very special edition of the quiz show “The Chase.” Students were pitted against a History “chaser!” Then on Wednesday there were three lectures Mr. Dylan Löser presented “Amedeo Guillet- a matured Italian war hero for the cultivated 21st century palate, served on a bed of exaggerations.“ Mr. Alex Schwarz - War and Feast: how war and conflict have changed the way societies eat.

Mr. Ben Matthews - The Blitz. Myth v Reality in the Second World War. And finally today, Friday saw Tea Chat and Post It - tea and a discussion of different historical issues.- an engaging teatime conversation about historical issues.

Chandler Ahn - Year 9 Reflection Ms. Angela Wyness is very proud of her Year 9 students. During Biology Week they ran special lessons for Year 5 students - something which benefited both sets of students.

All the Year 9 students produced excellent reflections on the work that they did - and Ms. Wyness shared this example by Chandler Ahn of S9A. Since its establishment, NLCS Jeju’s Science week has upheld a proud tradition of student leadership at the forefront of its dedications. This year, keeping pace with its spirit of participation, ten Year 9 Biology students decided to take part in the school’s seven-day celebration of the sciences. We reached out to the Junior School’s Biology department and arranged information sessions on vertebrates and invertebrates with four classes of Year 5 students. The entirety of the animal kingdom – or, rather, the entirety of the animal kingdom that inhibited the exhibitions on the third floor of the Boys building – was transported to the Junior school for the occasion, and Mr. Youell’s special collection of live stag beetles were brought out from their confinement and put on display for the observation of curious eleven-year-old eyes.

BIOLOGY

The material that we had decided to teach in our sessions tied in with the first chapter of our Cambridge iGCSE curriculum, an introductory unit on animal classification and the investigation of both morphological and DNA-related dichotomies. Explaining the material to a group of Biology-oblivious children required us to return to the basic fundamentals of our course material, and helped us emerge from the other side of the experience as stronger biologists than we had been before.

We divided the specimen models between the two lab areas that the Junior School Biology department had provided us with – accordingly dubbed the Invertebrates Class and the Vertebrates Class – and rotated our pool of students after spending ten minutes in each room. Students were encouraged to draw specific features of the organisms that they liked the most, and to label their drawings with the terminology they could identify from the worksheets. We were surprised at how fast the students caught up with some of the more complicated iGCSE material that we had included in their sketching worksheets, with one memorable girl shocking us all by proving that she was able to identify the difference between a live stag beetle’s mandibles and compound eyes by the time she had finished a pencilled draft of the feeding creature.

There is an alluring kind of beauty that comes from stepping outside the comfort of the Senior School building - new STEM societies popping up like mushrooms every other week, Biology encyclopedias clad in blazers and yellow ties prowling the hallways, library shelves piled full of Cambridge textbooks - and entering the hallways of the Junior School anew, where philosophical discourse about whether a stag beetle or a rhino beetle would win in a catfight are lobbied overhead and assertions are made that all species of ladybugs are, in fact, ladies. The study of Biology, I believe, is powered by the want to explore the wonderment that comprises all life - and seeing that spark of wonder kindle in a budding biologist’s eyes will never cease to be a memorable sight.

Education Perfect Results

We are very proud of our Latin department - many schools do not have access to the classics in the way that we do and we are delighted that our students share our teachers’ love for Latin!

In the Education Perfect Fobisia Languages Competition, held between November 4 and 11, NLCS Jeju came 1st for Latin out of 21 schools. The students had to test themselves on Latin vocabulary online to gain points.

Two students in Year 7 were the top two scorers in the Latin category. Alice Kim was awarded a Silver Award and Alvin Cha gained a Bronze Award. Sunny Bae, also Year 7 was 4th, also gaining a Bronze Award. Jinyoung Kil and Hannah Haeun in Year 9 and Jayden Lee in Year 7 also made a good contribution to help NLCS Jeju win the Latin category. Jinyoung and Hannah received a Credit Award.

In the Education Perfect Northern Championships NLCS Jeju came 2nd for Latin out of 56 schools a great achievement. All the students who took part have greatly increased their knowledge of Latin vocabulary.

Movember Mr Greg Cranwell, Head of Year 9 is spearheading an initiative called Movember which has been growing around the world for some years. Men grow out their moustaches for the whole month of November to highlight mens’ health issues. They hope to raise awareness and donations for conditions such as prostate cancer. This is an excellent cause - and lots of fun - so if you see a moustache with an attached teacher then ask them all about it!

Coffee And Chats Start Again - Year 2 and Year 4 We are very happy that we have been able to start inviting small groups of parents into School for some of our usual events and initiatives. Last week we invited Year 2 parents in to chat with Head of Juniors, Mr Jeremy Freeman, Mr Peter Evans (Head of First School), Mr Stewart Smith (AVP - Academic) and Mr Richard Washington (AVP - Pastoral). Parents enjoyed a musical performance by some of our Year 6 students as well as the opportunity to talk and listen.

This week was the turn of our Year 4 parents who enjoyed their time chatting in small groups.

As with all our events parents wear masks and fill in a travel survey and we limit exposure to any large groups of children.

The current COVID developments may mean changes as we have to keep our community safe and well.

Volcanoes - Mr Tipney’s Classes Mr James Tipney has been working with his students on volcanoes. As part of the homework the students created working volcanoes and filmed them. Cross Country - Junior

All our Junior School students took part in the Cross Country event last Friday. They all finished the course around School and we are very proud of them all. What a colourful sight it was as they dressed in red, yellow, green and blue to run. Well done, children and thank you to Head of Sport, Mr Dien Wooler, Mr Alistair Gainey and all the teachers who supported them.

Warrick Kwon - Debating Warrick Kwon in Year 10 is passionate about debate! He is often busy at weekends preparing and entering debating contests. He tells us that he has received 1st place in the novice division for a university debating tournament in Korea. Debating really develops English Language skills and prepares you for many areas including University applications and interviews. His teachers, Mrs Sandra Coll and Mrs Louise Symonds are very proud. Well done Warrick!

Luke Soekhee Min - Year 5 - Student Scientific Invention Competition We are proud to share that Luke Seokhee Min in Year 5 has won the Science and ICT Ministry Award which is the highest prize in the Student Scientific Invention Competition. He invented a spray and a stick that can prevent spider webs using a smell that spiders hate. Although he doesn’t like spiders, he thought that it is not ideal to actually kill them. Therefore, he invented a product focusing on prevention - rather than insecticides. Searching for proper resources is the most difficult part of inventing, but he said that he was very happy when he found out that the anti-spider spray and the stick actually worked throughout the experiment. Luke is planning other inventions now. How can we not be excited to see them soon! Well done, Luke!

STUDENT DIPLOMATS AND AMBASSADORS Minseo Cha - Ambassadors Award

Minseo Cha in Year 12 is one of many hard working students! She has recently achieved an Ambassador’s Award from Finland. She says “ I was given the Finnish Ambassador’s Award from the 20th Diplomatic International Forum of Seoul.The forum was composed of three main events, which include lectures from ambassadors, group discussion and presentation on politics in the post-corona era, and essay writing on border closure during the pandemic. The award was given for showing active participation, leadership, and the potential as a future diplomat throughout the whole session.

Politics and international relations are one of my greatest interests. Attending the forum was a meaningful experience as I was given the opportunity to hear and learn from the professionals in the field and to gain new perspectives. In relation to the forum, I am also looking forward to working as a Youth Diplomat of Zambia Embassy to Seoul and as a volunteer at Ecuador Embassy to Seoul. “

Jeslyn Seojung Park - Belgian Youth Goodwill Ambassadors We are proud to announce that Jeslyn Seojung Park in Year 11 has been selected as a Belgian Youth Goodwill Ambassador. The coming year marks the 120th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Belgium and she will participate in various events to promote and celebrate this milestone.

She explained, “Belgian Youth Goodwill Ambassador acts as a bridge between Korean and Belgian students through communication with the Belgian Embassy. We introduce Belgium and participate in events hosted by Korea and Belgium together. I have experience in representing Belgium at the mock U.N. conference in New York. Through this, I became more interested in Belgium and applied for this position. What I am looking forward to the most is the cultural exchange between Korean students and Belgian students. We are planning an online meeting between NLCS Jeju students and Belgian students. Students from both countries will talk about how Corona has changed their daily lives and how school life has changed."

Bella Kim - Year 7 - Ban Ki Moon Interview We also have the reporters and journalists of the future in our classes! Bella Kim of Year 7 who has just joined us in August is one of these stars! Her tutor, Mr Guy Lynton and her mother tell us “Bella is currently working as an international youth reporter. She has participated in many meetings as a youth representative on environmental issues and COVID-19 issues.

She appeared on a radio show during the last vacation and introduced the 'Tree Hug Campaign'. Bella also participated in the 'Jeju Forum' held at Lotte Hotel on November 5, 2020, and interviewed the former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Bella is currently writing an article about the Jeju Forum.

She has a dream of becoming a diplomat, and is always working hard for her dream.

That's why she's creating and cultivating these great opportunities. “
