MUSIC ENRICHMENT WEEK HISTORY DEBATE CLASS FOCUS AMAZING STUDENTS

9

A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju Music plays an important role in most of our lives and most of us cannot imagine a world without music! Indeed, we are very fortunate in North London Collegiate School Jeju that music plays a central role in the life of the school. This week in School, Music Enrichment Week has engaged the whole community with its breadth and depth. As usual we are privileged to experience a number of exceptional performances and I hope that you will follow the links to be part of the performances in school this week. I thank all our students and faculty and are peripatetic music teachers for their contributions and passion. At NLCS Jeju the co-curriculum is essential to the development and wellbeing of all our community and provides our students with a plethora of opportunities. Even in these difficult times we have maintained excellent co-curricular provision for each and every student even if we have to go to such extraordinary lengths to ensure we have additional COVID-19 precautionary measures in place. This for example has resulted in splitting the Senior and Junior Schools and so last Saturday our Junior School students had an engaging Bryant morning, along with our Boarding students and this Saturday all of the Senior School will be actively engaged with their own Bryant. This is only possible due to the imagination, creativity and immense organisational skills of our Co-Curricular staff led by AVP Mr Douglas Machin. We owe them all our sincere thanks. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

MUSIC ENRICHMENT WEEK This week saw the first of our regular subject Enrichment Weeks which happen throughout the year. They are designed to go beyond the curriculum and really stimulate the imagination and creativity of our students. They add extra to our comprehensive curriculum - and each subject gets a chance to shine throughout the year! Music Lecture A highlight of the week was a lecture on the creation of the electric guitar - The Birth of Loud - by Mr Neil Tamlyn - Director of the Arts and student Kang San (King) Hyun. Did you know how and why the electric guitar came into being? Students attending in person - and via livestream - were treated to ACDC as they entered! Take a look and enjoy! HERE Liane Carroll Visit We are very lucky to have access to amazing outside talent via our teachers and their networks. As part of Music Enrichment Week, we had a very special event - a live stream workshop, concert and Q & A with a special guest artist, jazz pianist, vocalist, composer and educator, Liane Carroll. Liane Carroll is an award winning Jazz Singer, pianist and composer based in the UK. As well as performing with her own Jazz trio she has worked with such artists as Paul McCartney, Gerry Rafferty and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Liane has a wealth of experience in teaching and running workshops across Europe. Listen to Liane here. Later this year Liane will be recording alongside our students as a guest artist on our online music recording project this year. You can hear last year’s collaboration with Gerard Presencer here.

IBDP Recital An IDBP Recital is always something to look forward to - and thank you to Harry Thorrington for planning the event on Wednesday evening this week and to Hyunjun Bae, Jun Keun Choi, Judy Lee and Cherin Kim for amazing performances. You can watch it HERE

Chuseok Concert Our Junior School parents have a real treat in store next week as Head of Music, Ms Cristyn Draper is planning a Chuseok Recital featuring some of our talented soloists in the Junior School. There was huge interest in this from many students and not everyone could take part - so we promise that others will get a chance later in the year as Ms Draper hopes to make this a regular event. Students from Years 3 - 6 will take part this time performing pieces by Vivaldi, Back, Saint Saens and many more. Watch it HERE on Wednesday 15 September at 14.30

PSYCHOLOGY ENRICHMENT WEEK Next week - w/c September 13 will be Psychology Enrichment Week spearheaded by Head of Psychology Ms Jess Laughton. There will be events, surveys and a fascinating Wednesday lecture “Untitled”. Students 16+ can be involved in some real neuropsychological research from Goldsmiths at breaktime in the GLT on Tuesday and then at Thursday and Friday breaktime the Psychology Societies will be out and about in front of the library with lots of activities.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARDS We are delighted to share that following the earlier announcement of the shortlisted entries for the Independent Schools of the Year 2021 awards, North London Collegiate School Jeju has now been selected as a Finalist in the British International School category. We KNOW we are the best but it’s great to be recognised! See all the finalists HERE

STORIES FROM OTHER CULTURES - YEAR 5

Thank you very much to Ms Justine Whitney who organised the Year 5 event, Stories From Other Cultures. Teachers and staff from around school shared stories from their own cultures or places they’ve lived or that they strongly identify with. We loved Ms Whitney’s story of How the Giant’s Causeway came to be. Ms Alex Gellersen came over from the Senior School to tell the story of The Elves and The Shoemaker - a German folk tale. Other stories came from Canada, China, Greece and Poland - to name a few. Thank you to all our colleagues for telling such great stories - and to all our Year 5 students for being such great listeners!

HISTORY DEBATE One thing which sets us apart from other schools is the focus on debate and challenge and discussions in all subjects. Head of History, Mr Dylan Loser has shared the perfect example of this from Mr Ben Matthews and his Year 13 class. On the 82nd anniversary of the British declaration of war against Nazi Germany, Mr Ben Matthews held a friendly debate with the motion - “The policy of appeasement was justifiable”. Mr Matthews sought to defend the motion whilst his students sought to argue against it.The audience was made up of Year 10 students, Mr Drew Thomas, Ms Justine Oliver and Mr Löser. Year 13 student, Annette (Hyun Joo) Cho argued that appeasement afforded the Nazis confidence and allies. She also explained that Nazi expansion in Austria and Czechoslovakia provided Hitler’s war machine with manpower and resources. Hyunjun Bae eloquently explained that the policy of appeasement provided the Nazis with time to militarise. She also argued that the policy deterred potential allies from joining the British and French. Jim (Hoejae) Kim highlighted the fact that appeasement led to increasing support for Hitler in Germany and abroad. He specifically argued that the policy of appeasement led to the Nazi Soviet Pact. Finally, Sean (Seonghyun) Yoon made strong rebuttals of Mr Matthews’ argument that the policy of appeasement was popular at the time. He skillfully criticized Mr Matthews’ claim that Nazi Germany was relatively peaceful at the time of appeasement. Ultimately, Mr Matthews triumphed with a narrow margin of the votes, but Sean was considered the best speaker by the teachers in attendance.

INFLUENZA MAGAZINE AWARD WINNERS! Congratulations to our student publishers! The Influenza team worked hard and their achievements with their issues last year have been celebrated far and wide. In the 6th Youth Creative Convergence Activities Online Competition the INFLUENZA team were awarded the accolade of the Busan Superintendent of Education Award. Juyeon Ma and Ez Kim and their team should be very proud. They told us - “Influenza was set up to spotlight and introduce people from different areas to give new perspectives on global issues. We love doing it and we wanted to know how we measured up to other student magazines so we entered this competition! We had to write 200 words on Influenza and it gave us a good chance to reflect on what we were doing and why.” Read all about it HERE and see the magazine itself HERE Issue 3 is on its way and is a collaboration on the subject of Refugees written by NLCS Jeju students and students at several Korean foreign public schools.

On Friday October 8 all Year 7 students are invited to camp overnight in School! This will follow an afternoon of activities which are part of a tutor programme around the framework of positive psychology including a focus on character strengths. This term the focus has been on five strengths Honesty Kindness Creativity Humour Love of learning Ms Sommerville says “ We are very excited about this event and believe that there will be many benefits for your children both individually and collectively. They will learn about how to overcome any challenges that they may face this year.” This is an exciting opportunity and information will be coming home from Ms Sommerville and Mr Hogan. We’ll be sure to take lots of pictures for parents!

SERVICE STORIES Sports Council Fundraising During Sports Day (June 17) last academic year, the Sports Council, in collaboration with TowerAid, held a fundraiser to raise money for the Jeju Naomi Center. During break time and lunchtime, the members from each committee sold various snacks, drinks, and icecreams on the New Astro. By the end of the day, the Sports Council had sold everything they had prepared and raised a total of KRW 556,040. All of the money raised was donated to the refugee children at the Jeju Naomi Center to help them pursue their sporting activities. The Sports Council and TowerAid would like to thank every student and staff member who purchased various edibles and helped us donate money to the refugee children.

Thank you to Ms Vivienne Brooks in the Junior School who has updated us on two service stories.

Eco Masks During Spring 2021, the Junior School Eco Committee ran a House Competition to design an eco-friendly, reusable mask. They were a great success and this year, with the introduction of the 5th Junior house, we produced a new mask for Haetae. The winning design was created by Joowon Kim Year 4, and they are stunning. Congratulations Joowon on a beautiful design - they have been in such high demand! Masks are still available for all houses in medium or small, and cost 3,000 KRW each.

Garage Sale Each summer we say goodbye to leaving members of our faculty. In order to reduce waste and provide good homes for no longer needed items, the staff charity garage sale has been a resounding success. Although in existence for many years, it has gone from strength to strength, raising over 2 million won for Jeju charities during the last three years and helping new members of staff settle into their new homes. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated items, money and time to the endeavour. Continue to recycle, reuse and reduce!

Junior School Mufti Day The first Junior School Mufti Day will be held next Thursday - September 16. All students are invited to wear traditional Korean dress to celebrate the upcoming Chuseok holiday. Everyone should donate 2,000 KRW. Thank you to Mr GwangHo Im and to the JS Service Ambassadors for making this happen!

Senior School - Hungry Games Last Friday, our Year 10 students enjoyed a great afternoon of games, challenges, fun and bonding. Thank you to Ms. Kate Sommerville and Head of Year Mr. Drew Thomas.
