A Letter From The Principal Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju This week we celebrate the successes of our Year 13 students with the IBVA Show and then their Valedictory Ceremony. We wish all our leavers from the Class of 2021 all health and happiness in the future. There have also been recent celebrations within some of the Houses to commemorate 10 years. The Houses are a much loved feature of NLCS Jeju and they arouse strong allegiances within our students and staff! For some of our Class of 2021 they have great loyalty to their Senior House especially as some arrived as young boarders many years ago and have continued to serve and be a part of the House life. Continuing this theme of celebration it is delightful to be able to congratulate two much appreciated and respected members of staff - Ms Monica (Yuan Yuan) Cai and Mr Dex Masrey who were married here on Jeju-do on Monday 31 May amongst their NLCS Jeju family. We wish them every happiness and a long future together! The times continue to be challenging with additional precautionary measures required but we are pleased that we are able to operate Bryant this Saturday (June 5) and next (June 12) due to the detailed safety measures in place so our students can continue to benefit from our extensive co curricular programme. Yours sincerely, Lynne Oldfield Principal

IBVA SHOW One of the highlights of the Visual Arts calendar is the IBVA Show. This takes place this evening in the PAC foyer. All 23 IBDP Visual Arts students are displaying their work. A limited audience will be attending the show but students and teachers can take a look (safely) over the next two weeks.) Thank you to Ms Sharon Kenningtom and the Art team who have nurtured and supported all our artistic talent in the Class of 2021. Many of the students will go on to further their passion and talent with courses in Visual Arts, Studio Art, Architecture and so much more.

VALEDICTORY Tomorrow sees the Valedictory Ceremony for our Class of 2021. We are delighted to still be able to host the ceremony albeit with restrictions and safety guidelines - like last year. We take this opportunity to thank all our Year 13 tutors who say goodbye to their tutor groups tomorrow - plus to AVP - Head of Sixth Form - Mr Simon Cox, AVP - IBDP Coordinator - Ms Justine Oliver, Head of Year 13 - Mr Jason Sannegadu for their support, guidance and nurture of this Class of 2021. Like our Class of 2020 they have had an unusual year. We’ll bring you pictures from the ceremony next week.

Some pictures posed or taken at different times over the last year with changing guidelines

FIRST SCHOOL BIG BOOK LAUNCH Thursday May 27 saw a very special event in the First School. All the Reception students have written their own books! Ms Charlotte Baxendale and Ms Melissa Woo presented a certificate and a copy of their printed books to every student. They had all created stories of fantasy creatures - mixtures of Giraffes, hamsters, unicorns, lions and more. These early writing skills will be a wonderful foundation for Year 1 when they will get the chance to exercise their imaginations even more!

ALUMNI PARENTS ASSOCIATION Our Alumni Parents Association are always incredibly supportive of our Graduating Classes. They recall a time when their own children graduated from NLCS Jeju and welcome the new alumni parents. They have shared details of this association and the benefits of becoming a part of the Alumni Parents Association. Thank you to Chair, Ms Baek who is parent to ex Head Boy Wesley Kim - Class of 2019. The NLCS JEJU Alumni Parents Association (NLCS JEJU APA) is an alumni association for all the NLCS Jeju alumni parents, officially and voluntarily founded with the idea of promoting a partnership between them and encouraging NLCS Jeju alumni parents to have continuous interest and give unstinting support to the school. From the first class - Class 2014 to Class 2017, we have worked as an informal group, committed to developing the alumni community and promoting NLCS Jeju’s prestige across the globe. It was in June 2019 when the NLCS JEJU APA was officially founded as a nonprofit association with the representative of Class 2018 parents appointed as the Chair. The NLCS JEJU APA have contributed to the ongoing success of the School and have helped with events such as the Bazaar and fundraising event in. They also gave Awards to the recipients (Class 2018) in an Alumni presentation Ceremony. The group have also donated eco-bags to Junior School students to celebrate the completion of new Junior School building and furthermore, have supported standing wreaths, banners and photo-walls for Valedictory for Class of 2020 and 2021. The NLCS JEJU APA currently consists of all NLCS Jeju alumni parents as its members and elects 2 Directors (12 Directors in total) from each graduation year group, 6 graduation year groups in total in chronological order from most recent, among whom Executives (6 in total) are to be elected for a term of 1 year with different roles. The APA symbol is a significant representation of the values and meaning of the APA. • Three different colours (Indigo, Sky blue and Brown) describe a graduation gown. • Vessel in the middle of graduation cap stands for NLCS Jeju Alumnus • Ribbon surrounding the graduation cap stands for NLCS Jeju Alumnus’ parents, symbolizing their love and support for alumnus. In that regard, the full name of the APA is written on the ribbon. This year the APA has created four new annual awards for the graduating class. Our Class of 2021 will have the first recipients. We will be sharing details next week so we don’t spoil the surprise!

SEOUL SUMMIT Last week we shared how Jeslyn Park and Rosa Oh had represented Korean teenagers - and NLCS Jeju - at the opening of the Seoul Summit - Green Future Week. We were very excited to see a picture shared by The Blue House, showing Jeslyn at the Opening Ceremony, seated with the President. Has the NLCS Jeju uniform been worn at a prouder occasion?

TEN YEARS OF SARAH HOUSE

Our boarders are incredibly proud of their Houses. Even when they move on to Hallain Year 12 they remain attached and feel an affiliation with their Senior House. Sarah House celebrated their ten years with a very special photoshoot. Teachers, students past and present joined together to share their pride in Sarah!

DANCE Last week, Year Groups 7, 8, 9 and 10 performed dances at the end of each of their Fun Afternoons organised by their Heads of Year as a break from their hard work and study. We had so many pictures we wanted to share more this week. Well done to all who participated - and to Ms Natalie Sangster, Ms Stella Taylor and Ms Paula Johnson for inspiration!

YEAR 6 PRODUCTION This year the Year 6 production is Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The production has been recorded this year as a normal, live audience show has not been possible. But the effort and the talent is no less spectacular. Thank you to all our Year 6 students for their efforts and to Ms Meghan Peters, Ms Justine Whitney, Ms Megan Hardy and the team for all their work.

BRYANTS AND CCAS Korean teacher, Mr Kyungmin Maeng , has shared some excellent photography from Photography CCA and Bryant. Our student photographers practice their skills - and learn new ones - by taking pictures of other activities and students. These ones include Golf, Music and Walk and Clean Up!

ACSL SUCCESS Our students have been participating in the ACSL competitions since December last year. We’ve had some excellent results and some standout performers… 4600+ Middle school and High school students from around the world took part in the ACSL - a mega programming contest. Students were assessed on their programming skills and fundamental concepts of computing. All students did 14 hours of testing in 4 online contests. They spent hours in preparation for these contests after school and during holidays. On Saturday, 29 May the finals took place at the same time for all students irrespective of location and time in their country. NLCS had finalists in all 3 categories Senior, Intermediate and Junior. All our students did incredibly well and we have some absolute standout performers!

PODCASTING

North London Collegiate School Jeju Our Junior School podcasters met with Shona Park ofYear 10 last week. She ran a mentoring session for the younger students based on her podcast, Spatium. It’s lovely to see the older students collaborating with the younger ones and we look forward to hearing more podcasts from this amazing bunch!

BOARDING Jeoji Formal Dinner As we move into a new decade of boarding, it is time for our Houses to celebrate the last decade and the last year together. Ms Natalie Sangster, HM of Jeoji Girls and her team organised a Jeoji Boarders Goodbye Dinner which was held, for space, health and safety reasons in the Auditorium. Everyone had a wonderful time as these pictures show!

SENIOR SCHOOL LIBRARY Teachers’ Picks

Our teachers are almost all great readers and love nothing more than to talk about what they are reading to relax and learn. Ms Hager Braham, Head of Libraries, asked everyone what they rate as their Book of The Year. Take a look at the results! Literature from around the world to inspire, entertain, educate. Once you’ve read them tell us what you think…

Library This Year What have our students been reading this year? Well the most popular books include Drama, Smile and Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier. Were you one of many who read these books? Over 5000 books were taken out in the Senior School alone. And that doesn’t include the books read during library time or the other resources our Libraries offer. If you want to know more then ask Ms Hager Braham, Head of Libraries.

PHILOSOPHY TEACHER ACCREDITATION - JAMES TIPNEY We are always very proud of the way our teachers are lifelong learners and seek out ways to expand their knowledge and training.

After an extended training and accreditation process, we are pleased to announce that James Tipney, our Head of Junior School Humanities, has qualified as an Associate Teacher with the Philosophy Foundation. The UK based philosopher who evaluated the discussions, run by Mr Tipney with some of our Year 5 and 6 children, was impressed by their enthusiasm and insights. The Philosophy Foundation is a London based NGO that seeks to promote doing philosophy with children, rather than simply teaching them about it. In their words: “Our mission is to bring understanding, wisdom and eudaimonia (flourishing) to the heart of education for children and adults. We believe that reasoning skills developed through philosophical enquiry are an indispensable foundation of all aspects of learning and that Philosophy, like maths, music or physical education, is intrinsically worth doing and intrinsically engaging.” There is an increasing body of evidence to support the view that regular philosophy sessions benefit students both in their role as citizens and as learners across all of their subjects. Students in a range of year groups in the Junior School will have the opportunity to participate in regular philosophy circles with Mr Tipney next year in what we hope will be a rewarding and unique school experience. If you would like to find out more about what the Philosophy Foundation does, please check out their website at the link HERE

YEAR 7 ART GALLERY Year 7 have created their own Art Museums. Take a look at their galleries here. We have some budding artists in the making and look forward to seeing lots of them exhibiting at their own IBVA Show. Thank you to Ms Elizabeth Collison and Ms Rachel Donadson for sharing these pictures.

LITTLE 8 Seo Jin (Lucy) Lee Hello everyone, I am Lucy Lee, one of the Little 8 members. Because of COVID-19, we couldn’t do as many activities as we would have liked. But, still we participated in many of the assemblies, most importantly the Founder’s Day Assembly. I think I am very lucky and proud to be in this lovely student leadership team. The Little 8 have led on many initiatives. We had an assembly as part of the student induction when the new class of Year 6 - 6IJ - came into our school in January. Also, we made students laugh with some great Christmas cracker jokes before the Christmas holiday. We all loved our responsibilities as members of the Little 8, and it has given me special memories for the rest of my life. I can still remember when it was interview day - I was so nervous and didn’t expect to be selected to be a member of the Little 8. But, look at this! I am one of the Little 8 members! I am very proud of myself! Also, I am so thankful for all of the teachers that helped me throughout the meetings. For example, Ms Hardy always keeps us in the know; Mr Washington makes us laugh all the time; and lastly, Mr Freeman helped us organise our school projects. Also, every teacher has contributed to my success, such as my tutor, and all of my subject teachers.

MUSIC ROOM NAMING! Mr Harry Thorrington and the Music team invite you to be part of a very special challenge as part of our Arts Week 2021. He says “What’s in a name? “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”, Shakespeare answers. Not much then! You might disagree. Perhaps the words we use define our reality. Whatever our relationship with language, there are three names you might have heard connected to the senior school music department but not given much thought to: Britten, Elgar, and Tavener rooms. What do these names signify? Three English composers of great renown? Three wildly divergent musical outputs and styles? Maybe they stand for more than the men they signify: perhaps they give us insight into the tastes of a 2011 music department? This year, the school’s tenth, marks an intriguing theme for Arts Week: “Our Journey.” Many interpretations abound, but what’s of greater interest is the implication of inclusion: we’re on a journey together. Journeying begets change, and so I’m delighted to announce that the music department seeks new classroom names for the next ten years of our journey. I encourage anyone - parents, teachers, support staff - with a favourite composer or musician to suggest their names here. The results will be announced on June 18. “ It’s time to say goodbye to Britten, Elgar and Tavener. Inclusivity, gender balance, somebody living, somebody Korean: whatever you have in mind, be part of something much larger than yourself and have a say in where the Music department goes next!

STAFF WEDDING Congratulations to Ms Monica (Yuan Yuan) Cai and Mr Dex Masrey who were married on Monday, at Mint restaurant in beautiful Jeju. Ms Cai is a Mandarin teacher here at NLCS Jeju and Mr Masrey is the theatre manager here - and the guest list included staff, teachers and their partners. The views were spectacular, the menu delicious, the flowers fresh and dramatic - and most importantly the couple were incredibly happy. Speeches, songs and video messages from Malaysia and China brought a tear to the eye. We wish them a very long and happy marriage.
