There have also been lots of exciting activities for the students in the Junior School which Mrs. Navin has highlighted in her newsletter, such as STEM week and World Book Day. Our Grade 12 students have received some incredible offers from universities around the world.

This term has been defined by a settling of systems

and processes and adaptation of our mindsets as we navigate through the next phase of the current situation. There has been an air of calm and a growing understanding of what we live with and the boundaries imposed on our routines. The students have continued to be resilient in facing the day-to-day challenges and have been committed to their learning. We have found new ways of delivering activities and academic enrichment beyond the classroom and continue to seek approval for more activities that can be delivered safely.

It has been wonderful to see the students returning to sport with the adapted grade sports days. In the Senior School the students have run debates and discussions through the academic societies, with the Economics society running a series of lectures and debates on Scandinavian Economic Socialism and the Medical Society managed to work within the Covid guidelines to lead some heart dissections for the younger students.

We have also had a series of lectures presented including, the Music Society - Ed Barker – Parliamentary candidate, saxophonist and political strategist - ‘Combining a career in music and politics’, 02

North America Offers from the US include: UCLA – Economics Major U-Michigan, Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Penn State for Engineering UC Merced, UC Riverside and Purdue for Psychology Indiana Bloomington, with scholarship, for Economics NYU Abu Dhabi with full scholarship Students have also completed interviews for Duke, Columbia, Stanford and Princeton. We await the offers for the Ivy League Colleges, which usually are sent at the beginning of April.

In Canada, three students have been accepted to the University of Toronto including an offer for the school of Engineering.

Rest of the World In addition to applications in the UK and US, several students have chosen to apply to institutions in other countries. Our students currently hold offers to study Civil Engineering at Hong Kong University, Chemistry at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Bahrain. Responses from universities in Korea are expected to arrive at the end of March.

We wish them all great success in their examinations which begin on 20th April and run through to mid-May. Our Grade 10 and Grade 12 students have external examinations immediately after the break and we wish them all well.

I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the School. We continue to provide a high-quality education to the students and see them make fantastic progress in their academic life and within their life beyond the classroom. We move into Term 3 with Ramadan beginning soon after we return and wish all our family’s prosperity, as we enter a time of reflection and thought for others. We are incredibly fortunate to all be a part of the NLCS Dubai community.

Message from The Head of Junior School previous years but it is so important to embrace and appreciate each other’s cultures within our school community, which helps to foster respect and tolerance and positive interactions; essential to us all.

Our Student Council have continued to lead initiatives across the Junior School including a mask design competition earlier this term. The students were encouraged to be creative incorporating a catchy hashtag relating to the current pandemic. We had many entries and the two winners were chosen by the Student Council, one winner for First School, one for Lower School. This project has been entirely led by our students and we are now in the process of getting the masks made.

This term seems to have gone by so quickly. It has

been pleasing to have been able to continue with our programme of events for Term 2 adhering to protocols to keep everyone safe.

Sports Days for each Grade was staggered over several days over a two-week period in January.

Students showed a real sense of team spirit, having the opportunity to take part in a range of competitive team events whilst earning points for their house and enjoying themselves! We saw determination, great sportsmanship and competitive spirit.

Book Week is now a tradition of the School and it was lovely to see our students dressed up as their favourite book characters. Thank you to all those parents who took part in our Mystery Reader initiative. I know the students really enjoyed guessing who was reading to the class.

STEM week was a huge success. There was such a buzz of excitement over the week with students involved in science experiments, problem solving and engineering tasks.

As we end our 2nd term of the year, I just want to say a huge thank you to our students. I am incredibly proud of all the students have achieved this term.

Whole School News MFL WEEK

Mr Li launched Modern Foreign Languages week this year with a fascinating assembly. He spoke about how our identity is influenced by the language we speak, explaining potential problems polyglots face.

At lunchtime on Sunday, German students attended a talk from a guest speaker. Frau Landmesser, who grew up in the former socialist East Germany, spoke about life under totalitarianism and her flight to West Germany. On Monday, everyone conversed in Chinese, with bursts of ‘nihao’ filling the corridors. In tutor time, there was a challenging Kahoot Quiztesting knowledge about a wide range of languages.

After school, Mrs Kanyerezi gave an impressive Nicholson Lecture about the power of language, investigating the definition of language and its role, for better or for worse, in the lives of individuals and societies. The week continued with bursts of super Spanish on Tuesday, followed by fantastic French speaking on Wednesday. In form time, students held activities to teach their mother tongue. The camaraderie was wonderful to watch, as the students learnt more about each other. On Thursday, our German-speaking day, the Languages Society gave a student led assembly, building on the theme of language and identity.

Across the week, Junior School students produced beautiful identity flags, displaying their languages, identity and cultural heritage. We were impressed with all the entries on the padlet! Equally impressive 05

CHARITY

By Mrs Laura Dunn This term the Charity Committee has worked to adapt their second Walk for Diabetes. Due to restrictions of social distancing, the students changed their walk from in school to be outside of school.

Students across both the junior and senior school were encouraged to walk with their families in February half term to promote health and fitness. In addition to the walk, the Charity Committee also held a non-uniform day where students were encouraged to dress in blue to highlight an awareness for diabetes. They raised a fantastic total of 9,332AED for the Al Jalila Foundation and their programme for diabetes research.The students have lots of exciting ideas for upcoming charity events and look forward to launching these over the next year and they would also welcome any ideas or opportunities from the school community.

INTERNATIONAL PICNIC DAY

International Picnic Day was hosted across the school with a focus on celebrating our nationality and traditions through food and dress. Senior School students took part in tutor time within various areas of the school allowing them to share their stories about their culture. Junior School celebrated during lunchtime with some show and tell activities as well as eating their own traditional food. Many students took the opportunity to dress up and showcase their national clothing. It was wonderful to see!

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

By Ms Nicola Woodroffe Our sporting programme continued to flourish this term and the additions of Basketball and Badminton proved popular. Apex introduced Grade Tennis ECAs. In the second half of term, further opportunities included G5 fitness clubs, G6 and G9 Football. G2-G11 swimmers had the chance to reconnect with their passion, as Apex introduced “swim select” sessions.The most popular options in the Senior School were Badminton, Football and Swimming, whilst the Junior School students preferred Swimming and Basketball. Aside from sport, the Music Department offered a theory ECA to help students prepare for their examinations in the summer term. The success of MUN continued as students contributed to the 53rd MUN Hague Conference online in a different time zone. The Duke of Edinburgh continued their camp craft and navigation online. Overall, 220 students were involved in the weekly ECA programme.

A micro ECA programme was introduced for Grades 6-9. These bite size sessions, provided opportunities for grades to develop their passions and engage over lunch. The menu included English “Journaling”, Geography “KawKab”, German Games, Percussion, Piano Duets and Violin. The G6 History “Who would you be and why?’’ took place in the beautiful setting of Budge Square whilst the KawKab magazine allowed many students from mixed grades to collaborate through teams with 7 articles written. Over 60 students jumped at the chance to try themselves out!

Well done to those students who participated in the online Emirates Literature Festival Reading Cup and the Chevron Cup. The Grade 6 experienced their first virtual field trip in the safety of the PAC, courtesy of the Geography Department!

Senior School News HOUSE COMPETITIONS

This term we have seen students compete across a wide variety of disciplines as part of the House

Competition Schedule. The PE department organised a superb socially-distanced Sports Day, which was even more inclusive than in previous years. Students took part within their Grade bubbles over the course of the week, with Yibir eventually announced as champions.

We held a hotly contested House Debating Competition in which over fifty students took part as either researchers, script writers or debaters. Once again, well done to Yibir who won the overall competition, coming second in the Junior final and winning the Senior final.

As we approach the end of term the staff, students and parents are eagerly anticipating the House Music event, which is always a special date in the NLCS diary. Well done to the students who have shown adaptability and determination in creating some interesting online Music performances. Even in the face of adversity we have succeeded!

HOUSE JAVI

By Ms Emma Carney This term has been a busy one for all four Houses. Javi triumphed in the Book Trailer and Spelling Bee, delighted to regain our trophy after coming last in 2020! The Book Trailer was a new online competition and it is one I would love to see back. The creativity and imagination of our students really was incredibly impressive. Ismail from Grade 7 gained the highest score of any students and we are delighted by his success.

We were disappointed to come 3rd on Sports Day having won the Grade 7, 9 & 10 competitions. Every single student in Javi gave their all each day, demonstrating fantastic team work and the true Javi grit, resilience and positivity. A huge shout out must go to our Sports Captain Sohaan who smashed the boys’ 80m record and our girls Grade 8 relay team who, after coming together last minute, really did perform brilliantly to win their race.

There were so many highlights and we look forward to further competitions as the term goes on. I could not be prouder to be Head of Javi and this fantastic community of staff and students.

HOUSE JAIS

HOUSE YIBIR

This term has certainly been a busy one for Jais House. After another amazingly successful first term, this term has produced some mixed results but everyone who has volunteered their talents and skills for House competitions should be incredibly proud of themselves. Sports Day produced a well-deserved second place with a number of school records, once again being broken. The sense of pride that students had after this event was palpable with, in some cases, tiny teams stepping up and doing their absolute best to compete. We finished the term with House Music, once again demonstrating the musical, technical and artistic skills of Team Jais. Whatever happens, I could not be more proud of the music team.

It has been wonderful to see the students of Yibir work together and be ‘ready for anything’ this term and overcome the challenges of working as a team whilst following the Covid 19 protocols, usually planning online in the evenings! It was a delight to see each of the grades in their respective Sports Days as they were cheering and encouraging one another.

Yibir were the overall winners of Sports Day for 2021, which is a fantastic achievement! There were also some records broken, Eva (8N) in the 250m broke the U15 girls record and Elodie (6L) broke the U13 girls 500m record! Well done!

This term has also seen another successful win for Yibir as the overall winners of House Debating. A huge congratulations to all those who took part, including those who were involved in research and planning behind the scenes. There has been a lot of excitement around House Music too, with a wonderful array of talent on display from designing the logo and poster to writing an original song called ‘Far Away’ written by Rheanna in Grade 9.

Wishing Yibir every success for the remainder of the academic year and well done to everyone for taking part in such a variety of events.

It is at this stage of the year that we also say thank you to our outgoing leadership team in Jais. We would like to thank Anoushka for captaining the House in the most extraordinary of circumstances, Jiwoo for being an awesome Vice Captain, Josie for leading our sporting endeavours, Avdesh for being an absolute rock for Anoushka and Jiwoo and Maxima for her creative mindset when it came to Sports Day as well as Leggy and Tanisha for being the voices of Jais. We look forward to welcoming a new leadership team after the holidays. The application process has been fierce and even though some may be disappointed to not gain an official role, I know that all will work together, as we always have done to ensure Jais do their absolute best in all they do.

HOUSE HAFEET

By Mrs Emma Dawson Hafeet have had a wonderful start to 2021 and their commitment to excellence, to each other and to being part of something bigger than oneself has come through in everything they have done.

Outstanding performances at both the Spelling Bee and House Debating. It was great to see students preparing and supporting each other across different grade levels - albeit via Teams at times! Two second places finishes were incredible, and our Junior Debating Team was undefeated in all their debates. A huge thanks must go to our Grade 9 students for the evenings spent preparing and coaching them in the lead up to the event.

Sports Day, as always was an absolute highlight of the term. With Covid-19 restrictions in place and sanitizer in plentiful supply, support, enthusiasm, grit and determination were constants each and every day. Hafeetians at all grade levels put themselves out there to represent our House and we had several first place finishes in a number of the track events.

This is always a bitter-sweet time of the year, as we bid farewell to the existing House Leadership Team and welcome in the students who have just been appointed. The number of students who applied, and the calibre of applications were incredible to see. Students’ wanting to try themselves out, bring about change and inspire others is exactly what we like to see in them.

As I am writing this, we have just submitted all of the entries for House Music. As with so many other things this year, it has been somewhat different due to compliance with Covid-19 restrictions. However, our fabulous Hafeetians have stepped up to the challenge, performed beautiful solo pieces and as a House created an incredible original composition.

English – Subject Focus

By Mrs Katy Younge It was a bright cold day in March, and the grade 7s were in the PAC. This was their opportunity to learn about dystopian fiction from one of the genre’s strongest advocates: Mr. Monaghan. The Principal gave students an overview of the origins of dystopian fiction, and an insight into his favourite texts, with clips and readings from ‘The Road’ and ‘1984’, followed by a question and answer session. A welcome change from the classrooms, students left full of enthusiasm, and armed with suggestions for wider reading.

With the echoes of nightingales in the distant dark woods and the hissing of witches in darkened corners, Lucy Strange brought her amazing novel, ‘The Secret of Nightingale Wood’ to life for Grade 6. Not only were we treated to a spine-tingling reading, we are also able to learn about the process of creating this award-winning story. The author answered our questions and gave us an amazing insight into how books are brought to life.

This live zoom lecture was a great opportunity for students to find out more about the writing process and the inspiration behind the story; we saw unedited versions, hand produced copy and heard about the author’s hopes for their work. A fantastic way to learn more about our class reader.

G6 Virtual Geography Fieldtrip

By Ms Charlotte Spurway On Tuesday 26th January, the Geography Department led another successful virtual fieldtrip. The Grade 6 cohort would normally visit JBR and Marina Walk and walk along the transect recoding various fieldwork at 8 different sites, but instead (faced with Covid restrictions), students took part in the virtual fieldtrip. The Grade 6 Geographers took part in the event in the PAC where Geography staff led an exciting morning of human fieldwork.

This term Grade 6 are investigating the impacts of tourism in many locations around the globe and using the JBR and Marina Walk transect to assess how footfall, environmental quality and the appropriateness of the sites link to tourism. Students were able to complete their methodologies as they watched the Geography team in action! This included a session where students were using pre-recorded videos to complete a range of Environmental Quality Surveys, Index of Decay Surveys, Land Use Surveys, Footfall counts, and field sketches which they will use to successfully prove or disprove their aim and hypothesis.

Maths Week

By Mr David Suarez Even though Maths Week tends to run in tandem with the 14th March (happy belated Pi Day everyone!), this year it kicked off straight after the half term break. During that week, Mr Riddler presented an engaging Nicholson lecture which looked at the Mathematics in cities of the future.

During form time students took part in a range of fun and exciting activities including a Kahoot Maths Quiz, the Lowest Unique Number game and the ever-popular Maths Dingbats. Everyone was pushed to the limit!

At the end of the week the Mathematics Society delivered an assembly on the enduring allure of the Rubik's cube, from its humble beginnings to the world-wide sensation it continues to be. They discussed the number of different arrangements of the faces (43 quintillion) and how, in spite of this phenomenally large number, solving the Rubiks cube can be done using a relatively trivial algorithm. The world record for completing the Rubik’s cube is 5.55 seconds and a 2 year-old from China has managed to solve one in 2 minutes and 43 seconds!!

Thank you to all of the students who took part and to the teachers who were brave enough to write the date on board using the vigesimal number system!

Science Week

By Mrs Jennifer Murphy This term the Science department organised an exciting Science week based on the theme of ‘Innovating for the future’. The week began with an interesting assembly from Mrs. Murphy, our Head of Science. She spoke about the science behind sleep, why we need it and how scientists have used innovative technology to determine its importance over the last 100 years.

Grade 6 and 7 students were wowed by a captivating demonstration from the chemistry department. Students watched as their teachers conducted a number of exciting experiments, such as the production elephant’s toothpaste by mixing hydrogen peroxide with yeast and liquid soap, burning metal elements to produce coloured flames and ‘the whoosh bottle’, a rapid combustion reaction which results in a dramatic whoosh sound when alcohol is ignited. Our budding physicists learned more about the physics of sound waves. Who knew sound was combustible?! The Rubens tube is a flame tube used to demonstrate the relationship between acoustics and pressure, the row of flames appears to dance along with the music because of the different wavelengths of sound.

Finally, our aspirational medics in grades 6-9 led a heart dissection. This session was carefully planned and delivered by our medical society student chairs. They talked to younger students about the structure and function of the mammalian heart, promoting discussion by asking questions like: Why is the left side of the heart more muscular than the right? They concluded the session with an opportunity for students to dissect hearts to view the main chambers.

Sixth Form

By Mr Alistair Wood Term 2 has seen the Sixth Form bustling with a hive of activity. Our Grade 12 students have faced a number of academic challenges in the form of numerous internal assessments, Theory of Knowledge essays, practical assessments and also oral examinations. However, they can be proud of their focus and achievements here, in addition to the numerous offers that they have received from universities all around the world. All of this set against the backdrop of uncertainty surrounding their final examinations! With these exams now confirmed, they now have a clear focus for their final months in school and have the opportunity to demonstrate how far they have come as students in their Diploma Programme journey. We know that they will work hard over the coming weeks to do themselves proud and we of course wish them well in this endeavour.

With the changing of the guard on the horizon, Grade 11 have been stepping into the leadership shoes of their seniors. It has been pleasing to see the Senior Societies reinvigorated under new stewardship. We have also seen a new Big 4 and House Captains emerge and we look forward to the contributions they will make to our school community in the coming months.

Junior School News HOUSE SPELLING BEE

Junior School House Spelling Bee is an annual house competition held at NLCS Dubai and this term, students

from KG2 to Grade 5 took part in the final of this exciting house competition. Students were tasked with spelling ten words suitable and challenging for their age category, each receiving the same word and writing it down. Each speller receives one point for correctly spelling the word given. There were many testing words included in this year's competition, such as 'Chrysanthemum' and 'Prospicience' to name a few. Congratulations to all NLCS students involved and representing their House teams.

WORLD BOOK DAY/PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

For World Book Day, the students came into school dressed as their favourite book characters. There were so many amazing costumes and we loved hearing all about why they chose the character as well as a little bit about the book. The students participated in a range of activities, based around a book for the Grade. Some of the books that were explored included; The Fing; Survival of Pompeii; The Wizard of Oz and Garbage King.

Students in Junior School celebrated their passion for reading by taking part in our “Get Caught Reading” Photography Competition. Students shared wonderful photographs reading their favourite books in unique and interesting places. It was amazing to see so many of our students immersed in reading over the half term and sharing their favourite books with their friends.

STEM WEEK

The launch of our first Junior School STEM week was a resounding success! The Junior School students were able to explore their love of learning through a variety of science, maths, engineering and technology projects throughout the week.

In the First School, Pre-KG greatly enjoyed exploring how colour changing water works, making paper helicopters and straw rockets in science. KG1 participated in a range of activities from making props, to constructing straw rockets, paper helicopters and making boats. KG2 used junk modelling to create a ‘food plant’ to solve world hunger. Grade 1 took part in tower building as well as upcycling and making clothes linking to their units on sustainability.

In the Lower School, Grade 2 participated in bridge building and making slime. Grade 3 made volcanoes and tornadoes in bottles linking to their units on natural disasters. Grade 4 showed excellent technology skills becoming iPad engineers and creating parachutes to protect their eggs. Grade 5 designed and constructed their own rollercoasters and created working catapults.

Miss Powell and Miss Peoples conducted workshops all throughout the week for the Junior School students, making robot cars, programming microbits-even programming a banana to play music.

I think we have some budding scientists and engineers blossoming in our Junior School.

It was fantastic to see the students showing their creativity, skills and their passion for different subjects throughout the week. Well done to all our students.

NLCS DUBAI’S GOT TALENT

By Ms Katy Schools Did you take part in the NLCS Got Talent? Did you earn points for your House? The Student Council held a competition on Flipgrid to host the Talent Show. Take a look at all the entries: https://flipgrid.com/jstalent2021 We had videos from both First School and Junior School with a range of arts, expertise and skills. From instrument playing to gymnastics or swimming to comedy jokes to poems to singing and to dancing, the students impressed the Student Council judges! In their weekly meetings, the Student Council representatives watched all of the videos and took a vote of their favourite, unique and well-presented recordings. All entries were awarded house points for their efforts and contribution to the Talent Show. The winners collected many house points for their team. In celebration, they had their photograph taken with Mrs. Navin for social media and their video was shown in an assembly on the last week of term.

We would like to congratulate everybody who participated. We trust that you enjoyed the House competition!

By Mr Ed Mosley The Physical Education Department have been thrilled with the contributions of students from across the school this term. Lessons have focused on striking and fielding games such as rounders and cricket, where we have been developing our throwing and catching skills as well as our batting. The girls have also enjoyed small sided games and drills in football, tag rugby and netball.

The highlight of the term must be Sports Day. This year, it looked a little different to ensure we could participate safely and still represent our House with pride. As such, we 13 Sports Day in 15 days. This was a marathon of mass participation, excitement, fun and house points.

Sports Day for the Senior School was the most inclusive format we have ever had. Every student from Grade 6 to 13 jumped, threw and ran to earn points for their House. This was then followed by the traditional track events of 80m, 250m, 500m and 750m. We also added the 50m as a brand-new event this year to offer additional opportunity for more students to represent their House in the always thrilling track races. After five days of competition, the top three could only be separated by six points. Congratulations goes to Yibir who were crowned Sports Day Champions 2021.
