THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PLAY 15 and 16 November 2017 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre
THE CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE Inspired by the Chinese play Chalk Circle Brecht’s parable play is set in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia. It retells the tale of King Solomon and a child claimed by and fought over by two mothers. Written at the close of World War II, this chalk circle is metaphorically drawn around a society misdirected in its priorities. A large cast of students from Years 8 & 9 will explore what happens when the law conflicts with justice and ask questions about who is right and wrong in complicated situations. ORIGINAL DANCE WORK BY SENIOR GIRLS 13 December 2017 at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre
RIGHT NOW
Years 7 and 8 students will be performing this classic 1938 play by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens. Featuring a large array of colourful characters, Wilder’s play makes the ordinary lives and actions of the townsfolk seem extraordinary. This production will involve a large cast of students in a play with traditional and wholesome values. It is sure to make you appreciate even the smallest things in life. THE YEAR 10 SUMMER PRODUCTION AND YEAR 12 STUDENT- DIRECTED PLAY 26 and 27 June 2018 at 7pm in the Drama Studio Year 10 students will have the opportunity to perform published material which will be selected later in the year to suit their strengths. The chance to direct a play of their choosing will be offered to Year 12 students. Previous productions have included a range of quality texts and have demonstrated the ability of our students to bring complex and challenging work to life.
This popular annual event will draw on extracts from new plays produced during 2017 as a stimulus for original dances. Using a range of styles and physical theatre techniques students will perform solos, duets, trios and large group pieces in this highly unique, original and entertaining evening. THE SENIOR SCHOOL PLAY 7, 8 and 10 March 2018 at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre
COMMUNITY For the first time ever, the Senior School Play is a brand new work created for students from Years 10-13. Set in a not-so-distant world where anonymity is banished and everyone’s present is constantly broadcast, the play will explore our strange desire to constantly display ourselves and where personhood is defined as perpetual presence in social networks. Drawing on modern day technology, audience members will need access to a smart phone for the performance.

LUTON AIRPORT
Involving all students in Year 7, the annual Dance Display is one of the highlights of the Middle School Calendar. Girls take part in a variety of dances choreographed around a given theme or idea.
Mirroring the rehearsal routines of Shakespeare’s actors, students from Year 11 will have only one full rehearsal to prepare this new play written by Deborah Gibbs, Director of Drama. This comedy explores what happens when a group of people arrive at Luton Airport when they should really be somewhere else. We are pleased to announce that NLCS students will be returning to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival from 13th – 18th August 2018.

WHOLE SCHOOL GYM & DANCE DISPLAY This innovative and impressive display brings together girls from Years 2 to 13. The show includes gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and trampolining routines. It is a wonderful opportunity for girls of all ages to perform together. Some of the most exciting pieces have been when a young First School girl performs with the Sixth Formers.

SINGING CONCERT This entertaining concert gives our talented vocalists in the Chandos Singers and students of our singing teachers, the opportunity to perform in public. 23 November 2017 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre
SENIOR CONCERT This concert will feature the Senior Orchestra playing the first movement of Dvorak’s 8th Symphony; a work that is full of memorable tunes, and exciting moments. The Senior Choir will combine with tenors and basses for the first time in several years and perform the Mozart’s Coronation Mass. The Chandos Singers, Concert Band and String Orchestra will also be performing. 5 December 2017 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre
MIDDLE SCHOOL FESTIVE CONCERT To celebrate the end of term, the annual festive concert will see a number of choirs, ensembles and the Middle School Orchestra playing a variety of both serious and lighter selections of music. In a different format this year, up to 8 groups will be put forward to play at the South East Chamber Music for Schools, 1st round later in the term. CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION 1ST ROUND The first round of the Chamber Music Competition will take place at North London Collegiate School. Parents and friends are welcome to attend. North London groups selected from the preliminary concert will perform their repertoire and receive specialist coaching by professional chamber music players. 13 March 2018 at 7pm

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOLOISTS’ CONCERT This is a wonderful opportunity for all Middle School students to sign up (no auditions) to play a solo in front of an audience. There are two concerts to choose from. 14 June 2018 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CONCERT Our Summer Concert showcases the musical talents of Middle School girls and includes performances by the largest ensembles; the Chamber Choir, Clarinets, Flutes and the Orchestra. The Music Department will also be introducing
THE OLD HOUSE CONCERT SERIES This new venture will comprise a series of lunchtime and evening recitals. Come along to one of our Informal Lunchtime Concerts to hear a wide variety of musical performances from across the school. Before enjoying an evening of solo and chamber music items showcasing our most talented pupils, please join us for a drink in the sumptuous setting of the Old House. Later in the year, guest musicians will be invited to work with our musicians during the day, before giving an inspirational performance in the evening.
All Informal Lunchtime Concerts will begin at 1pm, with refreshments from 12.40pm. All Drummond Recitals will begin at 6pm, with refreshments from 5.30pm.
11th December 2017 at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre Arts Society are delighted to invite you to its annual Charity Show in which students from Years 7 to 13 design, construct and model wearable art, this year in response to the theme of music from the 20th century. The catwalk show is a spectacular event accompanied by a charity auction of items of haute couture donated by big names of the fashion world and there will also be a sale of second hand fashion items and Karenni crafts. This exciting event continues to raise money each year for the KSDP, a charity set up in memory of ONL, Stephanie Lee, which works with the Karenni people, providing basic needs and education for the smallest and poorest of the ethnic states in Burma. Around 23,000 Karenni people are confined to camps in Mae Hong Son province, some of whom have lived in these camps for 20 years, including children who have never seen the outside world. The refugees are not allowed to work so rely on support from humanitarian organisations. The Karenni charity will be represented at our Fashion Show, with a stall selling items made by the people of Vietnam.
FORTHCOMING EXHIBITIONS:The year ahead promises to be rich with an array of exhibitions by artists around the school: In November, we look forward to an exhibition in the Old House of prints and other works by Eleanor Engle, ONL and teacher at North London. This will be followed, in the Spring term, by two exhibitions in the Performing Arts Centre by our latest artists-in-residence, who will be working at our school and with NLCS students during the new academic year: Michael Chance is a stunning oil painter who mixes real worlds with dreams and imagination to create dynamic land and cityscapes, embellished by virtuoso handling of glazes, colour and space. Emma Lopez is an ‘eco-artist’ who uses recycled materials to create beautiful illustrations depicting legends and fantasies, including a dramatic retelling of the Chandos story.

The Summer Term will bring the annual private views of work by our GCSE, preU and IB students, which will take place on one evening as part of the school’s annual Arts Festival and during Valedictory week.

Our students bring an extraordinary and wonderfully rich array of skills in a broad range of media and processes, including paint, print, sculpture, ceramic, fashion, 3D design, photography and digital arts. The private views are always a fantastic event and a great opportunity to meet and talk to the artists themselves, and we very much hope to see you there.

Each year, the residents of the Livability Home are invited to a Christmas celebration at the school, ending with this light-hearted and traditional excuse for some seasonal fun. Year 12 perform their own original work.

CANONS FOLLIES All girls in Year 13 perform in this satirical revue, which includes dance, music and comedy performances and sketches from students across the school. Year 13 write, produce and direct the piece as a whole, providing a witty and always lively alternative view of North London. Senior Committee students are in charge of auditioning and running the show and perform their own ‘links’ on the night. FOUNDER’S DAY 22 March 2018
THE FOUNDER’S DAY PLAYS Throughout the school there are four separate, specially written, Founder’s Day Plays based on the theme for the Headmistress’s Founder’s Day Address. These performances by students in the Senior School, the Middle School, the Lower School and the First School, incorporate art, music, dance and drama in highly entertaining and innovative ways. Founder’s Day is an annual event which traditionally falls on the last day of the Spring Term.
