A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the New London Barn Playhouse!

The snow has melted, summer is finally here, and we once again raise the curtain on another exciting season within the Barn Playhouse! The winter has been jam-packed with auditions and interviews. With over 1,500 applicants from all over the country, we are filling nearly 140 seasonal positions, making us the third largest employer in New London, with talented artists to join us this summer. The Barn Playhouse continues to offer a unique opportunity to see young, Broadway- caliber talent right here on Main Street in New London.

With that said, the Barn Playhouse isn’t just for summer programming anymore. The year has continued to be a unique and rewarding one with growing programs and community partnerships. Our Fleming Center for Artistic Development has been flourishing with educational programming and performances. We are on the cusp of becoming a leading performing arts and education center in New England while continuing to serve our patrons, partners, and the greater community. If you have not yet joined us in this wonderful facility, we hope you will visit in the future. We invite you to sit back (perhaps on a pillow) and be transported. You do not want

to miss any moment of another exciting summer at the Barn Playhouse, as you see a side-splitting farce-meets-murder mystery or a heart-warming and touching performance about an unexpected friendship. Join us and take in the celebrated songs from a classic musical for all ages or a new musical that brings the remarkable career of the illustrious Four Seasons to life. You will find delight in the sci-fi smash about a man-eating plant and overcome by a contemporary rock hit based on a classic opera. It promises to be a season filled with laughter, empathy, perseverance, and joy.

I want to take this moment to thank you for making the Barn Playhouse a part of your story. We are proud to embark on our 92nd year of producing high-quality theater in this community. Whether you have enjoyed performances at the Barn since you were a child, tread the boards yourself, or have only recently discovered us, we are honored that you include us in your summer.

We thank you for being a part of our family and for your generous support.

CHILDREN’S THEATER SERIES

June

YOUR THEATER FOR THE SUMMER!

This is the Barn Playhouse’s 92nd season…..and you’d think you’ve seen it all. But the Barn just keeps on going!

A full-blown summer season with an eager group of interns from around the country….. and new ticketing opportunities. Expanding the season with Symphony NH performing South Pacific in early June. New works premiere in September. Education opportunities for the young to the mature – something for everyone year-round. And partnering with other area cultural resources to make for a lively arts scene 12 months of the year.

The Playhouse got its final touches this spring – new rafters and new roof. The Fleming Center has new lighting with a new sound system in the works. The Red House – where the interns live and work, and administration and costuming are housed – still looks and feels new. And, if you didn’t know, the Barn Playhouse also owns other buildings around New London that house other seasonal staff, the costume/props “Green Barn,” and housing for the Executive Artistic Director and his family. So, the campus is both new and old, it is well-cared for, and is a big family for nearly 140 staff in the summer season.

All made possible by the generosity of our donors – large and small – who help keep the lights on, maintain a physical plant that serves multiple purposes, and makes it possible for the senior staff to put on an impressive summer season. Thank you.

So, bring your friends. Have a libation while waiting for the curtain to go up. And rent a pillow – still a buy at 5 ¢.

A Short History of the New London Barn Playhouse 92 YEARS AND COUNTING

The New London Barn Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating summer theater in New Hampshire, a distinction that has gained it inclusion in the State’s Register of Historic Places.

In the summer of 1933, Mrs. Josephine Etter Holmes, Chair of the Department of Speech at Mount Holyoke College, came to town with four female students. With the assistance of colleagues at Colby Junior College and male actors drawn from the community, the group established the New London Players of New Hampshire. Performances began on July 11th in front of a sold-out audience at Whipple Memorial Hall. Three one-act plays were presented that night. Tickets were 50 cents; pillows a nickel. The local citizenry provided props, costumes, and ushers. That winter, Mrs. Holmes purchased the circa 1820 Everett Barn on Main Street. Local carpenter Horace Stanley was hired to turn the hayloft into a balcony and add a box office window under the front stairs. Patrons sat on long wooden benches on July 12, 1934 to see the opening night performance of the drama Milestones. Dr. H. Leslie Sawyer, President of Colby Junior College (now Colby-Sawyer College), was the Barn Playhouse’s first usher.

The advent of World War II brought significant change. Most summer theaters closed, many never to reopen, but the Barn Playhouse soldiered on with a slimmed-down schedule. Mrs. Holmes sold the Playhouse in 1948 to N. Warren Weldon, who in turn sold it to Norman Leger in 1955. A Nebraska native and graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City, Norman would guide the Barn Playhouse for the next half century. He introduced musical comedy by producing Finian’s Rainbow in 1956, and little by little he switched the emphasis from plays to the primarily musical comedy format of today.

Many Barnies have gone on to great acclaim in the entertainment business. Sandy Dennis won two Tony Awards on Broadway and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. Stephen Schwartz, famed composer of Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, and many more, served as the Barn Playhouse’s Music Director in the 1960s. Emmy Award-winner Phillip Rosenthal was the creator and chief writer for Everybody Loves Raymond. Choreographer and director Casey Nicholaw won a Tony Award for his direction of the smash hit The Book of Mormon.

2023, BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

Judy Kuhn, a three-time Tony Award nominee, was the original Cosette in Les Miserables on Broadway, and Kyle Jean-Baptiste (a 2013 Acting Intern) was the youngest, as well as the first African American, actor to perform the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway. Taye Diggs, Laura Linney, and countless others have praised their time at the Barn Playhouse as being crucial to their later success.

Our alumni community includes hundreds of individuals who are sharing their talents and gifts with the world. They are a cherished part of our history. We know many more will enter our community as new “Barnies” and continue this legacy. Here are some examples of alumni from recent years and the work they have done and continue to do. There are countless others to share, but here is a small look: Talia Suskauer ‘15 Broadway: Be More Chill, Wicked (Elphaba), Colton Ryan ‘14 Tony Award-Nominated Broadway: New York, New York, Pedro Garza ‘17 Broadway: Hamilton, Dancin’, Kennedy Caughell ‘11 Broadway: Beautiful, Paradise Square, Kathryn Allison ‘14 Broadway: Company, Aladdin, Wicked, and Alexander Robinson ‘18 Co-Producer Broadway: New York, New York, A Beautiful Noise, and The Piano Lesson.

The quality of the productions has never been better. In 2008, Carol Dunne brought a new level of artistic achievement and energy to the Barn Playhouse. Her work over seven years led to many awards, as well as a general recognition among our peers that the Barn Playhouse is the premier producer of musicals in the state. In 2015, Keith Coughlin was named Executive Artistic Director and has navigated the Barn Playhouse through wonderfully creative and challenging times.

In 2020, the Barn Playhouse was forced to cancel the scheduled season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was able to produce a live radio play to keep the years counting. In October 2020, the Play A Part Campaign was launched and construction began to improve the experience for patrons, artists, and staff. In 2021, the pandemic was still present, so performances were presented as a “Summer Under the Stars” under a tent on the campus of Colby-Sawyer College.

In May 2022, the Play A Part campaign came to a close and projects including the new Fleming Center for Artistic Development, administrative office expansion, elevators in both buildings for accessibility, paved parking lot, theater-level restrooms, expanded porch, larger box office, and a courtyard were available for all to enjoy. This initiative created the Barn Playhouse’s new face on Main Street and will ensure this historic landmark entertains and educates many generations for years to come.

It All Started at the Barn | Alumni Spotlight

JAKE PEDERSEN

What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?

My favorite show would have to be Newsies. It was the last of the shows for us interns and such a dream to do every night. Everyone attached to that production was incredible. NLBP Newsies is a huge highlight in my life.

What are you currently working on?

I recently closed Parade on Broadway as Frankie Epps and am currently Boq in the 20th anniversary cast of Wicked on Broadway. Come visit us in OZ!

What makes the Barn Playhouse so special?

The people. The barn continues to find brilliant artists that also happen to be incredibly kind humans. I don’t think I have ever felt as much love and community in my life than I have at New London Barn. Seeing a show at NLBP is special in its own right, but being a Barnie is an honor I’ll never take for granted.

RHONNIROSE MANTILLA

What was your favorite show you performed in at the Barn Playhouse?

My favorite show I performed at the Barn was definitely Catch Me If You Can. Working with Jeff Whiting was an absolute dream and being co-dance captain for the show made it such a collaborative, special experience. It was also our last show of the season, so we weren’t rehearsing for anything during the day which allowed us to all hang out and enjoy each other’s company before we left. Most of us are still good friends today!

What are you currently working on?

I just made my Broadway debut in Harmony! I’m in the ensemble and I understudy Josephine Baker.

What advice do you have for the 2024 acting intern company?

The only advice I have for the 2024 interns is to soak up every moment. The summer goes by so fast. Never take a single moment for granted.
