Jersey Wooly
The Official Newsletter of the National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club: Winter 2022 “The Fluff”

What a convention this one was ! All of our club events went off smoothly, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I was gratified to win BOB, and to have the highest sale animal in the Golden Fleece Auction. This is definitely a year I won’t forget. Congratulations to Amber Henderson on her BOS win with her broken buck, and to all of the winners in Groups—especially to Lori Robasciotti who had five Group/Opposite Group winners! Way to go, Lori! And of course, huge congratulations to Rose Marie (Bunnie) Turley on getting Orange woolies passed! Oranges are now showable in the AOV group. Also, showable now are chocolates and lilacs in pointed white, tort, and otters, which were voted in under the ARBA standards committee’s new vote in process for specific color groups.
I want to thank everyone who attended Convention this year for your help. I think every single person with a Jersey Wooly stepped in at some point to help with all of the club-related tasks. Thank you to Amber, for orchestrating the booth decorations and turning out a lovely booth. Thank you to also to Michaeline McConnell and Lori Robasciotti, and all of D2 for putting together lovely welcome bags for the exhibitors. A huge thank you to Julie Aversa for making buttons for each of the attendees, and for taking on many organizing tasks at Convention. Thank you so much to all of our show clerks and ramrods! And of course, to all of you for running rabbits to and from the tables. None of this happens without you! Thank you to Michelle Landis for being our GFA solicitor and organizer, and to Brenda Reilly for being our very capable auctioneer. A special thank you to Dalton Robertson for ordering and bringing pizza for everyone before the Auction. There are so many more people to thank, and I hope that each of you know how very appreciated you are!
So many people came home from Convention with various illnesses. Covid, the Flu and RSV were all going around. I came home with Covid, recovered from that, and then as a parting gift, Covid gave me myocarditis, which is caused by viruses attacking the heart muscle. I had a small heart attack, and am on strict rest for a 3–6-month time period to allow the heart to recover. I would never have believed how much a thing like this can sap your energy! Though I’m gaining stamina, I know it will be some time before I’m back to top form. In the meantime, I appreciate all of you who take on extra tasks to help out.
In club business before Convention, the Board voted to induct Angel Lesage into the Hall of Fame. Congratulations, Angel, on this well-deserved honor! Angel was on the board in several capacities in the last 15 years. (Continued on page 19)
I am writing this as your newly elected vice president. And I greatly appreciate all those that took the Time to vote on their ballots and return them.
First though I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for letting me serve as their secretary for the last 5 plus years. I very much enjoyed the chance that I had to be of service to our club. For the most part it was an enjoyable endeavor, and the amount of respect and understanding I received was very much appreciated. I hope that everyone extends the same amount of courtesy to our new incoming secretary, Alex Williams. I have no doubt that she will do an awesome job.
With convention just coming to an end it is my deepest hope that this article finds everyone doing well. And let those preparations begin for next year already. Our memberships just from what I have seen have gone up some from the convention itself so that means our members are doing a good job in promoting this wonderful breed. But we can always use more. In our district where we are lacking is youth memberships. Can’t speak to all districts but in ours we sure are. I have said on numerous occasions that the youth are the future, and we need those to continue. So, we need to continue to try and get more youth involved in this breed. I was at a show last weekend and had a few youths ask about the woolies, but they fear coat care. Explaining to them seemed to be very important that the proper texture of coat requires very little grooming on the day-to-day basis. I had never realized how common the misconception is that these are miniature angoras, that is no where near the case.
But with that, I hope this article finds all our members well. Until we speak again.
Yours Truly. Doug
Hello District 1 members ! I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the holiday season.
A big congratulations to all of the winners at National Convention! It was nice seeing so many familiar faces and a few new members as well. I was extremely impressed by the support and encouragement from all of the breeders. It’s a wonderful feeling watching competitors lift each other up. Another congratulations and round of applause to Rose Bunnie Turley for her beautiful display and all of her hard work and dedication all these years. It really paid off and the animals at Convention were stunning. The energy felt during the Orange Jersey Wooly presentation was amazing! Wishing all of our members a happy holidays and hoping for full nest boxes of future show stoppers!
District 1 members~ I would love to feature your BOB, RIS, and BIS wins in our next article. Please send pictures to bethanyrobertsongm@gmail.com to show off your wins!

Keeping rabbits protected from direct weather and cold drafts in winter is crutial to their health!
The points in this Fluff are shows through September 2022. I had hoped to squeeze in October shows but experienced no small number of hiccups! I now have several months of free weekends to get everything caught up again.
Thank you to Doug Brown for his years of hard work as NJWRC Secretary! It’s not an easy position! I had some formatting hiccups this time around, so please check these points carefully!! I’m 99% sure I caught all the issues, but there’s a chance of some errors. Please contact me right away if anything seems amiss.
njwrcsweeps@gmail.com
A reminder regarding memberships!! If you are showing as a partnership, all exhibitors on the entry must be NJWRC members in order for points to be counted. Please check this!! Changes in secretaries can also lead to hiccups (every club, every time!), so check into your membership status with Alex Williams if you’re concerned. Watch the website (www.njwrcsweeps.com) for the next update, which I believe will be before the end of December at the latest.
Till next time!

I’m BAAAACK District 2!!! Thank you so much Amber Henderson for her past 2 terms as our District 2 Director. We were in excellent hands with her thoughtful care of our members and passion for our breed. We are in your debt for a job well done!
Now, of course the remainder of my report will be devoted to the 2022 99th ARBA Convention in Reno , NV. Again, thank you to Amber Henderson for the awesome looking Jersey Wooly booth. Also a thank you to District 1 Director Bethany Robertson and her daughter Aria for all their balloon blowing up expertise.
On to placements! Congratulations to Cheryl Loesch on Best of Breed with her gorgeous self senior doe and our own Amber Henderson for Best Opposite of Breed with her Broken senior buck. It’s always great to see 2 long time breeders win the top awards.
Don't forget to clean all equipment you brought back from convention. Not only does it keep any unwanted illness away, but then it's ready for next year already!
Since this was a “local” Convention for our district, our members had a great showing! Our one youth exhibitor Bettina Curletto once again owned the Agouti group with Best of Group and Best Opposite. Open Agouti group saw Michaeline McConnell in the top 5 with almost all her entries. In the Open AOV group, we will get to see more than Pointeds next year, YAY! I was honored to take home both BOG, Senior doe and BOSG, Senior buck. The Open Broken group saw the greatest success for our members. First place Senior buck (as well as BOG and BOSB) was Amber, second place Michaeline, and I snuck in with fourth place. First place Senior doe (BOSG) as well as first place Junior buck were owned and bred Sarah and Shane Maki. Rounding out brokens was first place Junior doe owned by Max Horan and bred by Sarah and Shane Maki. The self group had placements won by Jasmine Crawford, Amber, Sarah/Shane and myself. Group 5, Shadeds, BOG, Senior doe and BOSG, Senior buck, both owned and bred by myself. Sarah and Shane as well as Linda Means also had strong placements in this group. The last group, Tan, also had many of our members doing well, Melodye Alicia, Jasmine, Amber, Linda, Sarah/Shane and Max. I was shocked to be awarded BOG with an otter buck bred by DeAnn and Niles Boulier. Lastly, Best Display was humbly won by me, such and honor!
There are a few of us who are already planning the trip to Louisville next year for the 100th anniversary Convention, it’s never too early.
If there is anything I can do for our district members, please do not hesitate to contact me via Messenger or email dogznkidz@ hotmail.com . Until next time, good luck on the tables and in the nest boxes.

Winter is a great time to evaluate your herd and plan for your upcoming juniors and spring litters.
Hi, I would like to introduce myself to those in my district that may not have met me yet. My name is Michael Wolfe ,and I have been raising Jersey Woolies for close to 11 years now. I am located in Oklahoma ,but I do try and frequent other states for shows. I tend to show quite a bit in Oklahoma and Texas , but I am going to try and make some New Mexico and Colorado shows this year. My herd mainly consists of agoutis. I do have shadeds, pointed whites and chocolates. I am also working on trying to make and improve some chocolate pointed whites here, but they are a work in progress. Our farm name is Top Tier Farms ,and we have quite a few projects here. Our rabbits are definitely the biggest project ,but we also raise poultry, pigeons and waterfowl.
I would like to make it known that if anyone has any questions they can always feel free to email me ,and I will do my best to answer those questions. I am wanting to help grow our club in our district ,and start getting our exhibitor numbers up in both youth and open. We have been growing in our district ,and I would like to keep it that way. I believe we have also been seeing an increase in Jersey Woolies taking “Best in Show” or “Reserve in Show” in our district. I would like to congratulate everyone who has been able to attend shows and on their success. Please email me with any pictures you would like to share in our newsletter 2002michaelwolfe@gmail.com.

Hello District 5!
Winter has arrived in the Midwest and I am very thankful that my bunnies are in a heated barn. I am not a cold weather person! If your rabbits are not in a heated barn you will need to make sure they have plenty of water and shelter from the wind.
It's a good time to start preparing for Nationals April 15th in Canton,Ohio. The Ohio Jersey Wooly Club is working hard to pull everything together. Keep watching the NJWRC page for updates. Anytime you have questions feel free to reach out. If I don't have the answer I will do my best to get it for you. Send me your winning pics or any other news you may have. My email is mobunniesrabbitry@yahoo.com. Stay warm and I hope to see you all soon!
Bring plenty of hay or oats to shows. Sometimes rabbits get nervous while travelling and having their favorite food will ensure they continue to eat when they're not at home.
At the time of this writing we're expecting our first storm of the year tomorrow
I'm not ready!
I ended up spending a majority of my day outside finishing up the last of fall chores. The barn is set up for the winter and the rabbits were toasty despite much of the day remaining below freezing. D7 has been doing so well in the show scene! Maine's Tara Lovely has been sweeping up awards wherever she goes. I was thrilled to hear she won the following at Grand Finals in NY: In Show A Tara won BOB TAA's Cambell (Tan Pattern Sr Buck) and BOSB with TT269 (Shaded Sr Doe). Then, in Show B, she won BOB with TT269.
On 11/12/22 in Brewer, Maine Woolies were well represented by youth exhibitor Angelina DeVito when she won BIS in Show A and RIS in Show B! Congrats, Angelina! What a lovely rabbit!
Please don't hesitate to contact me with brags and comments. I love hearing from the wonderful D7 Wooly people.

Did you know animals will burn more calories trying to keep themselves warm? Adjusting their food in cold temperatures can help you maintain good condition.

Well convention is just over. What a whirlwind. It was very cool to see a donated rabbit to the GFA win BOB and go on to sell for $2,900. What generous donors we have. I hope that everyone will breed and keep one back for the Golden Fleece Auction in the event you may be asked to donate. Lots of excitement at this years convention. Rose Marie Bunnie Turley PASSED the orange variety. And the vote in varieties, chocolate otter, lilac otter, chocolate and lilac pointed white, chocolate and lilac tort also passed the ARBA standard committee. These will be able to be shown as soon as they are published in the Domestic Rabbit. It was also announced convention will be in Louisville for 2023 and 2024.
The two largest groups shown were the broken that we went over last month and the Self group which we will discuss this month. The Self group covers black, blue, blue eyed white, chocolate, lilac and ruby eyed white. Black is to be uniform black overall, with a slate undercolor with brown eyes. Blue is to be a uniform dark blue overall, with a slate blue undercolor with blue gray eyes. Blue eyed white is to be pure white with blue eyes. Chocolate is to be uniform medium chocolate brown overall, with a dove gray undercolor with brown eyes, may have a ruby cast. Lilac is to be uniform dove gray with a pinkish tint with blue gray eyes and may have a ruby cast. Ruby eyed white is to be pure white, with white toenails and ruby red pupil with pink iris eyes.
Showing around district 8 has remained healthy. Lots of shows with close to and over 100 rabbits, with a healthy amount of youth breeders. Keep up the great work!!!!!
Lets make this coming year 2023 a focus on growing our youth breeders. I hope you accept this challenge. Congratulations to all of you.
Share the show fliers and your wins or accomplishments on the NJWRC district 8 facebook page. Next national show will be Jersey Wooly Nationals 2023 hosted by the Ohio Jersey Wooly Club held at the Hall of Fame show in Canton, Ohio on April 15 th , 2023. Hope to see you all there.
May your nest boxes be full.

It was great getting to see everyone in Reno! The Jersey Wooly Booth was beautiful and there were so many gorgeous JWs there in Open and Youth. Congrats to Cheryl Loesch on winning Open BOB with her gorgeous REW Doe. And Congrats to Amber Henderson on winning Open BOSB with her handsome broken buck.
The youth did us proud with Cody Landis winning Youth BOB with his broken buck AFB's Panda Bear and Makayla Wallock winning Youth BOSB with her stunning Pointed Black SR Doe Nala who has been tearing up the show tables.
I hope that you are all enjoying the fall show season. Here's to full coats and full nestboxes, gorgeous woolies and beautiful JRs.
I also want to send out a huge congratulations to our D9 Rose-Marie Bunnie Turley on all of her hard work and tenacity on getting those beautiful Orange Jersey Woolies passed!!!! Orange is the New AOV!!!

Talk to your feed dealers. Fresh feed is optimal, and nutrients degrade over time. Timing when you get feed based on when it arrives at your dealer can help provide the best nutrition to your animals.
Reno or bust, sure was on most of our minds traveling from near and far. I would like to take a second and thank all the board members for keeping us organized and assisting in putting on the show. A big congratulations to Cody Landis winning Best of Breed with his Broken Senior Buck and Makayla Wallock winning Best of Opposite Sex Breed with her AOV Sr Doe.
LINDSAY AVERSA allstarwoolies@gmail.comConvention is a good time to sit back and assess your herd. I have talked about it before but I would like to revisit the thought of, goals in a rabbitry. For example, my goals are to work on blacks and blues and placement of the high point in the midsection. Some other goals that you could have would be: shape of ear, ear placement, coat whether it be more density or better texture, or it could be shape of head. There is nothing better then focusing on a goal and accomplishing it, especially when you start to place higher at shows. Now also remember to be patient, these goals often times are not fixed with one breeding. But progression is what matters most. I am happy to hear that everyone made it home safe, good luck breeding and we will see you at Nationals in Canton, OH April 15 th , 2023.
Hi there everyone!
First off, I would like to congratulate Bunny Turley for all her hard work paying off with the passing of the oranges!! I'm super excited to see them on the show table this coming year! Also, congratulations to Cheryl Losch on her BOB as well as Amber Henderson on her BOSB. This year's convention was definitely one for the books. With that being said is anyone as excited as I am that for the next two years Convention will be held in Kentucky?
As your new club secretary, I am hoping to see membership increase this year. We need to find ways to promote excitement in our hobby in order to get the youth more involved. So, if anyone has any ideas, please feel free to let I or any of the other officers know. Our woolies truly are a very special breed and I would love to see more people realize what a great group of people we have in this club. When we all work together for the betterment of our breed and hobby, we not only get personal satisfaction but we make some wonderful memories along the way. Please feel free to reach out to me if you need anything and look forward to seeing you at the show!
ALEX WILLIAMSDid you know alfalfa hay has a higher level of calcium vs orchard grass? Offering alfalfa to does with litters can help supplement calcium while she is putting a lot of energy into producing milk; especially for larger litters.

Her organization skills and steady approach guided the club back to a Constitution and By-Laws led governance, a task that is not understood nor appreciated by many, but which makes a huge and positive impact on the daily workings of a club.
In club business after Convention, our first task was to appoint a new D2 representative. I had approached Lori Robasciotti at Convention to see if she’d be willing to take on the job again. She was, and the board unanimously appointed her to the position. Welcome, Lori!
By the time this newsletter goes to print, we will all be planning for Nationals! This year, Nationals will be in Canton Ohio on April 15, hosted by the Ohio Jersey Wooly club. I’m sure you’ve all been breeding and planning for that day already. I hope to see you and your lovely woolies there.

I always allow myself that little dream before all of the packing, excitement and fanfare of the whole convention experience. And then I put it away in favor of enjoying the moments of the show itself. Those little thrills when you get a top 5 animal . . . a first-place animal . . . a Best or Opposite of Group animal. There’s that huge surge of hope, always tempered with a good dose of reality: there are many other wonderful animals up there that are worthy contenders. I’d watched that progression from my post as a clerk behind the table. As the judge weighed Witness—I admit I held my breath—and then was selected as first place Self Senior doe, then Best of Group. When the judges announced the Self Senior Doe as Best of Breed, I almost couldn’t take it in. My doe Best of Breed!
Pi’s Witness is a worthy doe, one of a few in my small herd. In the last few years, I’d cut back from about 50 to 20 woolies. I’ve spent the last 14 years learning the ropes of breeding, learning to plan and set individual goals for my herd, then working and honing those goals continually to try to make my animals as close to the Standard as I could. Is Witness a perfect Jersey Wooly? No. But she’s very close to the whole package that I’ve been working toward. Every once in a while, in my breeding plan, I would take a doe that had what I thought to be as close to that whole package as possible, and put her straight into breeding. I would show that doe occasionally if she was in coat, or not doing her main job in my herd.
For me, Witness was a brood doe, a doe selected to breed toward “the maximum end of weight, but still had all the attributes” I was looking for in a show animal. That description was, in fact, one that was put forward when the board considered including a brood doe in the Golden Fleece Auction this year. We thought that a good, typey brood doe would be a good addition for the auction. When I was asked to donate to the GFA, I went back and forth between two lovely does, and finally decided on Witness as the one that matched what we talked about for a “brood doe” in the GFA. It was quite a shock to hear the bidding on Witness go over 1000.00 in just a few minutes time, and I’m still overwhelmed that the final bid was $2900.00! Whenever I’ve donated an animal to the GFA, I try to give one of my best. Yes, it’s a little bit of a wrench to do that. The payoff is in seeing that animal help another breeder, often in another area of the country.
In ending this article, I want to pay a little homage to the roots of my rabbitry, the fine rabbits that my son and I started with all those years ago from Tessa and Terri Erb. And also, to all of my friends who’ve worked with me, sold, traded, or bred animals with mine in the pursuit of bettering the breed. I am grateful to all of you for the continued camaraderie, friendship and the joy we share.
It was a humbling experience to win BOB at Convention.~ Cheryl
Being awarded a great honor at a show after planning and hard work is satisfying. It feels good to know that you’re improving your herd and doing something right for the breed as a whole by producing healthy, well-structured animals. But, in my opinion, what makes all the planning, hard work, and successes (no matter small or big) really worth it is the friendships we gain and foster through striving to continue to do better.
Aren’t the friendships we make in this hobby the best? We plan and scheme with our friends in texts, send late night messages just to share a breeding idea or milestone achieved, or if our friends are close enough, we talk nonstop during the in-between time at shows. We talk about what ifs and “crazy” experiments that have been formulating in our minds that we’d like to try in our breeding programs. We are sounding boards for each other. We give each other the courage to try the things we’ve thought up. I have to say that my Best Opposite Sex Breed win with Wonder’s Johnny Lingo at the ARBA Convention in Reno was extra special for me because it was made possible because of one of those friendships. It is how Johnny Lingo came to be.
A few years ago, Chase Austin and I were having some fun sharing our “wild” ideas with each other. We decided to do a sort of volley of desirable characteristics back and forth between our barns; a fun challenge to see if we could help one another by working on specific projects between Conventions. It has taken a few years, we’ve had a great time trying to accomplish our parts of the challenge, and it is certainly paying off. Chase accomplished success in his experimentations and sent me home from Louisville, KY with the rabbit we thought would be the next best piece to work with. It was a pretty, heavily-marked doe with a broad backside, named Chase’s Frankesha. That doe produced Johnny Lingo, a smooth, compact, and exceptionally well-balanced buck, on her first try.
At the past two Conventions, it has been fun to get together to see each other’s rabbits and go over the results of our work after only being able to share photos and critiques throughout the year. And we get excited at each other’s progress. This year was no exception. In fact, I think Chase got just about as excited as I did when Johnny Lingo won BOSB. Knowing that made my day because I feel like this was “our” win. I can’t wait to see the first results of what I’m working on this year. I’m hoping to create the next piece of our “game” to send home with Chase so we can continue our fun. We’ll see how it goes.
There are all kinds of rewards to be gained from showing rabbits.~Amber Henderson

WHEW!! Has anyone else felt like these past few months have been a true test of everyone's sanity? No? Just me?...
This time of the year has been known to be the busiest for all of us, and this year was no exception. Between fall shows, litters, preparing for colder temperatures, and ARBA Convention in Reno, it seems like everyone has been put to the test. Not to mention it felt like the whole club was sick at one point or another this fall/winter. I know that this newsletter is coming to everyone later than expected, but due to some unforseen circumstances, we had to wait to publish.
On another note, a HUGE congratulations to all of those who had success in Reno! Especailly to Bunnie Turley on passing Oranges as the new AOV!! Many of us, including myself have been thankful Bunnie has introduced these little balls of sunshine into our barns and we have been able to start showcasing them as of December! Spoiler alert, we may be seeing a Special Edition of The Fluff coming in the next months to honor this huge milestone and help our members understand the story of how orange woolies and their genetics came to be our newest AOV!
You may see some design changes and additions (hint- try the link on page 38). We are trying to utilize the best features of our online publishing to help everyone else!
Hope everyone is well and enjoyed this edition!
