President’s Report “The crowd of JW supporters around the table was quite large..." ~ Cheryl Loesch Well, another Convention in the books! It was sure good to be back at Convention, even though it was “rabbitless” for me, due to being in the quarantine zone for an RHDv2 case. With proper biosecurity cautions, it is possible to attend sans rabbits. There were a lot of big moments and excitement for Jersey Wooly breeders at this one! First, congratulations to our big winners, Grace Anderson and Steven Buell for Open, and Makayla Wallock and Cody Landis for youth.

Vice President’s Report “If you have never been to a national show, I highly recommend attending.” ~ Angel LeSage
Convention looked like it was great! Congratulations to all the winners. I am sorry I could not make it, but it seemed like everyone got into the groove with their rabbits and the show. For me, I have many wonderful memories of Convention and the people I have met. Knowing breeders and seeing them at convention, over the years, has been a highlight for me and this is, in part, why I show; it’s the people plus the bunnies. There is nothing like Convention (or Nationals) to give you a chance to meet some of the best breeders in the country, and to talk rabbits for hours. I don’t know about you, but my family doesn't like me to talk too much about rabbits. If you never have been to a national show, I highly recommend attending. Convention planning starts way in advance of Convention. You would be surprised how much there is to do to get ready. Most of the planning falls onto the President and she begins discussion with the board, deciding what is needed and then recruits for help with some of the big activities, as well as, reaching out to membership for needed help. Most jobs are not that hard, it just takes a little time and follow through.
I think the club runs best when it’s run collectively, utilizing everyone’s talents. I know that we’ve got many skilled members out there who would be embraced by membership should they want to step forward to serve the club. Please consider offering your talents for the planning of next year’s show. You need to start thinking about helping in July - August, check with your district director and/or the president to see what you could do to help. Cheryl worked hard this year to rethink how the booth should run and to simplify it, and trying to make it less about selling and more a place to touch base for members. If there is something you would like at the booth, please step forward to help make it happen. So, when convention rolls around next year, we would love to have more help, because the more help we have the more we can do as a club.

Hello everyone! Some of you may know me as the club historian, but I am extremely honored to be selected as the District 1 director. My name is Bethany and I am co-breeder of Wild Meadows Rabbitry. My mom, Meadow Sultan, was the last D1 director and my partner in crime with our Woolies. She passed on the wool bug to me and I am excited for this opportunity. I would like to congratulate all of the winners from National Convention! I saw pictures of so many outstanding animals, and I was simply blown away. I’m so proud of our breeders and loved

seeing how supportive everyone was even while watching from home. Here in District 1, we have been waiting for shows for what felt like forever! As we all know, Covid and the RHVD2 viruses had us all in limbo. Now that things are starting up again, I am happy to see some old faces and new at the shows! It’s wonderful being surrounded by those that share the same love for the hobby and are willing to help and support each other. Here are a few wins to highlight from our district.

Youth Report “"Be sure to keep an eye on the National Jersey Wooly Youth Group page on Facebook..." ~ Lindsaey Aversa
Lindsay Aversa
allstarwoolies@gmail.com
Now that we are settled in from Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. I would like to congratulate our winners! Best of Opposite Sex Breed was won by Cody Landis with his Broken Senior Buck. And Best of Breed was won by Makayla Wallock with her AOV Senior Doe. Also, congratulations to all of the group and opposite group winners! Now that Convention has come to a close, the next event to start planning for is Nationals.
Nationals is being held in Stillwater, Minnesota in April of 2022. Which means planning breedings should be next on the agenda! Planning breedings, meaning setting a date to breed to have the ability to have mature juniors at an event. To have mature juniors, in my opinion, would be a junior just on the verge of turning 6 months of age. These juniors usually have a better chance at winning due to having the mass and
coat structure that younger juniors usually lack. When planning these breedings you have less of a chance of showing these juniors when they hit their “uglies”. The “uglies” is what I call a junior Jersey Woolies first molt. It is typically called that because that is the phase in which the junior is molting, their head is popping, and they are gaining muscles that they did not have before. Jersey Woolies are a breed you also have to be patient with, their “prime” is typically at 2 years of age. But this can vary by the line you are breeding. I always say, you know your rabbitry best. Be sure to keep on eye on the National Jersey Wooly Youth Group page on Facebook for more information on this. And just a reminder, the National Jersey Wooly Youth Group is Youth only, so please join if you haven’t!

Another ARBA Convention is in the books. Congratulations to the winners! I was so looking forward to attending Convention, but evidently it just wasn’t meant to be.
it goes without saying, please be careful when using any kind of heat in your barn.
Another winter is upon us. We got our first cold night of 34 degrees recently. It goes without saying that I had to prep for the cold night. Hay was put in each cage and since the temperature did not fall below freezing, I did not have to drain my automatic water system. I was relieved that I did not have to be concerned with freezing lines. I am thankful that Louisiana gets very few below freezing temps. For those that have frigid winters,

I haven’t been able to attend any shows because of the RHVD confirmed case in MS; however, the quarantine time should be over and I hope to be back at the shows in December. I look forward to seeing my Wooly peeps.

Kneir and Mae Swan were re-elected for districts 5 and 7. I’m looking forward to an exciting year with the board! We have a scholarship application deadline coming on April 30th. Any graduating high school senior seeking higher education may apply. Whether you, or your graduating senior, are looking at trade school or college, please encourage them to apply. We have two $1000.00 scholarships to give out. In the next few weeks some of our committees will be taking up their charges once again. The Guidebook Committee is working on revising the guidebook and discussing best formats for that information, while the Education Committee will be looking at creating materials to help breeders and judges in under14
standing our breed. The club’s Standards Committee will take up the new “vote-in color process agreed upon by the ARBA Standards committee, and announced at convention. This is a process by which we can add certain colors to “complete” groups via a ballot and membership vote. So, for example, we as a breed club may choose to add chocolate and lilac otters to our slate. With a passing membership vote and recommendation to the ARBA Standards committee, these colors could be added to our roster for showing as soon as next year. Sweepstakes/Sanctions Report “...I'm running into clubs that had canceled in 2020 & then completed show/s in 2021 without letting me know, so it's still coming down to members keeping tabs as well." ~ Nicole Schmitt Hello NJWRC Members!
Nicole Schmitt njwrcsweeps@gmail.com
Well, another season (my SEVENTH with the NJWRC!) is done & in the books. I’m happy to report *all* sanctions were accounted for this season (I upped my collection game, for sure). Final sweepstakes are in this issue of the Fluff, and full results on the sweepstakes website. I’m not submitting any points for the 2021/2022 season (began 7/1/2021) for this Fluff because there’s just not enough completed shows to warrant it – but I’ll be getting an update on the site soon. I’m not trying to guilt trip you (or, maybe I am!) – but I want to remind you to keep an eye on the sanctioned shows listing. A show catalog may well list NJWRC sanctioned – but if it’s not on my list, then it’s not sanctioned (yet!). Follow up with clubs, check in with me, etc. Shows can’t be sanctioned after the fact – so watch that listing. The sanctioned shows listing on the
sweepstakes website isn’t only for confirming shows are actually sanctioned. It’s a real time listing of the status of ALL shows. I need your help as NJWRC members to watch for late reports, etc., as well. If you attended a show that I have marked as late for an extended period of time, you can jump in & assist. Contact the club, check in with me, share information. My work is only as good as the information I have. See a show listed as open yet that you know was canceled? Contact me, the club, etc. I’m hoping the canceled shows problem with start to resolve itself with simply fewer shows having to be canceled. But now I’m running into clubs that had canceled in 2020 & then competed show/s in 2021 without letting me know, so it’s still coming down to members keeping tabs as well. OK, I’ll stop with all that now! Congratulations to all the winners! I look forward to seeing you in Kentucky! -Nicole

Hello from your club historian!
their own group.
I love that I have the opportunity to combine and share two things I truly enjoy: history and rabbits. Seeing that the orange Jersey Woolies passed one of their showings at National Convention had me reminiscing about when brokens were accepted.
Brian would go on to win BOB at Jersey Wooly Nationals in the Spring of 2004. He wrote an article for The Fluff Summer 2004 Edition that talks about his win and a bit about developing the brokens. He also won BOB at National Convention in 2004 and 2005 with a broken senior doe.
Broken Jersey Woolies passed their first showing in 2001 at the San Diego Convention and were accepted in 2003 at the Wichita Kansas Convention, thanks to Brian Hartzell. It was stated by several standards committee members that it was the best presentation they had ever seen. As you continue reading articles submitted by the district directors, it is written over and over again how beautiful Brian’s rabbits were. Broken Jersey Woolies became eligible to show on February 1st, 2004. When the brokens were originally accepted in 2003, they were entered under the AOV group. However, it is reported that Brian was adamant that brokens go under their own group and club members voted in support of this. It was almost a unanimous decision by club members to separate them from the AOV group, and by January 1st, 2006, brokens became

I believe we can all agree that Brian Hartzell was an outstanding breeder who truly impacted our hobby. Brokens are now one of the most competitive groups I have shown against, and almost every breeder I know has them in their barn. In my research, I not only found multiple testaments to the quality of animals Brian produced, but also to how wonderful he was as a person. He helped improve our breed and was a bright light in our hobby. Sadly, Brian passed away suddenly in 2009. Thank you to Brian Hartzell for his years of dedication and hard work in our breed. Lost too soon, but remembered by so many. Bethany Robertson

Secretary's Report "The friendships that I have gained through this club are unbelievable, and I wouldn't be the same person without them." ~Doug Brown Hello members of the NJWRC!

With our convention just ending that means that our new officers are taking their positions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our outgoing board members for all the work that they have done to help our club as a whole. Thank you to Meadow Sultan, Bill Miller, and Haley Jewell. And welcome to the board Izzy Bukovich, Michelle Landis, and Bethany Robertson. I look forward to getting the opportunity to work with you all. Our club has a whole seemed to take a little bit of a hit with memberships due to the pandemic going around, along with the RHVD2. But I am happy to say that seems to be trending the other way yet again. Our memberships have been slowly starting to come back up. The one thing that we need though is youth, I have said many times the youth are the future to our breed. Without the youth our club will have no future. I try my best to get young people interested in this wonderful breed and I hope that other members will do the same. The comradery that you see amongst this breed is almost unmatched in the rabbit world, from my personal experience. Like I have said our memberships are starting to pick back up again. But there is always room for more. The adage of “the more the merrier” is very fitting in this sense. We need to promote our wonderful breed

as much as we can. The friendships that I have gained through this club are unbelievable, and I wouldn’t be the same person without them. Unfortunately, I was not able to attend Convention this year, but to see all the new member applications that came from Convention was very nice. That meant that our club members persuaded some people to try this breed out. That is always nice to see. A special thanks needs to go out to all the people involved with running the booth and any of the other jobs that needed to be done at convention. All involved, I am sure, did an awesome job. Just a friendly reminder--if you plan on renewing, or send someone new to the club, please make sure to let me know. With the modern day comes the conveniences of using apps such as PayPal. The only problem that I have with that is that when someone uses that convenience to pay, I don’t get an application along with it. The application has all the pertinent information that I need, as well as all the information needed for our Sweeps chair. So, without that I find myself trying to track down that information and that just makes my job a little bit harder. Any help you can give with that would be greatly appreciated. Until next time everybody. Doug Brown NJWRC Secretary

ARBA CONVENTION
OPEN BEST OF BREED
GRACE ADERSON & HER TAN SENIOR DOE I am so grateful to have won this year’s Best of Breed Jersey Wooly at ARBA Convention, having shown against so many beautiful rabbits, and with so many exhibitors that I respect! Willow Ridge Delilah came to me as a young junior as a gift from my friend, Sharon Moore. She represents many years of breeding, co-breeding, work and friendship for us. Her sire, GC Willow Ridge Legend (15 GC legs), was sired by a buck from a cobreeding that Sharon and I did twice as the offspring were so nice. This co-breeding was GC B&B’s Surf (4 BIS,1 RIS, 24 GC legs) and GC Willow Ridge High Flyer (BOG Tan Pattern 2017 Jersey Wooly Nationals). Legend also goes back to B&B’s Farkle (1 RIS, 10 GC legs) who was one of my favorite bucks that I sold to Sharon several years ago. Delilah’s sire’s side represents both mine and Sharon’s lines. Delilah’s dam, B&B’s Dixie, was a big, pretty brood doe who had several litters for me and is all from my lines. I sold her to Sharon in 2018.
She had only been to one other double show before Convention, due to injuring a leg this spring and being in a heavy molt after she had healed. She was awarded a BOB and BOS at those shows, but I never expected her to win at Convention! I am so glad that Sharon was able to accompany me to the Best in Show ceremony, as this is her achievement, too. It meant a lot to me. The best part about showing rabbits is the friends we make along the way.
Dixie had gotten older and was not producing as consistently as she once had, but she kindled a litter of five does in January of 2021. Sharon knew that she had been one of my favorite does and this might be her last litter, so she offered me one of the babies. She said she didn’t need to keep all five does from the litter. She picked a lovely sable marten doe to keep, and brought the other four to a show for me to look at in March. I liked a seal doe from the litter, but Sarah preferred Delilah, and so we ended up with her. She was the smallest of the litter, but has always had a big attitude! T h e

STEVEN BUELL & CONNIE FORWARD & THEIR CHESTNUT SR BUCK What a shock it was! CR’s Dragon Breath (T2), out of the infamous White On Rice, came to us at about 8 weeks old from Billy Miller. He has been my mom’s baby since she brought him home. T2 has been an essential part of our herd over the last 2.5 years. He has been the sire to about 90% of our babies over the last year and a half. His offspring include the chestnut doe that went to help get a new youth started in New York last year. She was best junior of group at the youth

national show in NY in 2020 and BOG agouti in youth at this convention. T2 has won at least 30 legs so far in his show career, I’ve been bad at keeping count. He was also #5 Wooly of the Year last year. This buck almost didn’t make the trip to convention. When I was at home making our convention entries a couple of days before the deadline, Mom asked if his coat was even going to be good enough to sign up. At

that time, it was about a half inch. I wasn’t sure, but knew I wanted to sign him up anyways. If we had to scratch him then so be it. He is also the one that I wasn’t sure if we wanted to risk by bringing him to convention. We had enough offspring out of him that were staying home, and I was willing to consider it. Ultimately the decision was left up to my mother. Well, when she showed up to pick me up, he was loaded! The rest is history. His coat grew in nicely in a short amount of time. I was busy judging my first convention came over to tell me that he39 T h e when F l u f mom f
had won his class. Then won the group. We weren’t really expecting this; it was the biggest showing of agoutis that I can remember in my time showing Woolies. Plus, there were some really nice-looking ones while walking down the aisles! What a surprise it was when the judges announced that the agouti buck was BOSB!! The best part of this for me was that it was my Mom’s baby that did so well for us. After all that she has been through lately, she deserved something good to happen. W i n t e r

by ARBA). Our Standard Committee will look at the process, which colors meet this process, and make recommendations for colors to be voted on by the membership for approval.
President Cheryl Loesch gave an overview of topics for future board discussion:
Committees: The Guidebook committee will continue its work on revising and updating the guidebook. The Education and Club Standards committee will begin their work in the new year. The Constitution and Bylaws Committee may require a new member appointment. A Nationals committee may need to be formulated to do the general work of soliciting and collecting bids for future nationals, as well as prompting the hosts to submit information by the required deadlines.
Website: Brittany Moorse, our new Webmaster, is conferring with the website host company to see if we can figure out what is happening with the form capture information for memberships. This is a primary focus right now. Membership general info: In keeping with the national trend, there are several folks across the country who have put a hold on the hobby and thus have not renewed. There is a slight downward trend in new memberships and membership renewal. It is unclear how much of that might be due to issues with renewing online, and getting information to our club secretary. It has been suggested that District Directors be more directly engaged with their memberships to encourage new members and renewals. To this end, our secretary will be asked to send updated district membership lists every other month to Directors. There was some discussion on membership software applications that may allow for direct member input and payment; we will need to review these to see if they would be cost effective for the club, and if the data would be easily sharable to our Sweeps Chair, since membership and Sweeps are tightly integrated. Newsletter: Changes to the appearance and delivery of the newsletter may be necessary in the near future. The board and club need to assess what role the newsletter plays in our business, and best delivery methods. It is not financially feasible to go back to printed and mailed newsletters, as the cost is prohibitive, so delivery and access will remain via some kind of online portal. Overview of new Vote-in Process for colors that complete “groups”: The ARBA Standards committee approved a process by which clubs can add some colors to complete groups (as defined T h e

New Logo: In the coming year, we should look at commissioning a new logo; potentially this would be something that could come out of collaboration with the Education and Standards committees. Treasurer’s Report: Brenda Reilly gave out copies of a comparative analysis of the last 3 years’ budgets and spending to show where we might need to adjust our expenses. She also gave a report of expenses year-to-date for our current fiscal year. We are running a little below our usual reserve due largely to cancelled shows and lack of income from sanctions over the past year, though these appear to be picking up again. Golden Fleece Auction: Amber Henderson gave a report on this years’ auction donations, in which quite a few youth have participated. The donations took a bit more finesse this year, due to a drop in people being able to show and differences in how people approached breeding this year. There were not as many young seniors for breeders to select from as many breeders changed the timing of breedings. There will be a need to look at our rules and guidelines in the coming months to see what exceptions and changes make sense for our process. Meeting adjourned at 6:30 pm.
