February 15 2021 – May 15, 2021 Proposed changes/additions to Standing Rule 2, which governs the bid process and awarding of Nationals to host clubs.

Provisions were added to allow for rescheduling within the same sweeps year, or cancelling as needed; adding a provision to not award the next available Nationals (scheduled two years out) until it is known whether the current year will need to be cancelled. This allows for awarding of the next available nationals to the host club whose show was cancelled.

Changes included removing the mandate that, in the event of no bids, Nationals be held in Columbus, OH, instead opening the site to any available venue that the Board or its agents deem suitable. Reiterates that the NJWRC is the final authority on questions of cancellation.

President’s Report “This is a fine time to remind you all that the entire club is staffed by volunteers.” ~ Cheryl Loesch What a year it has been, with Covid 19 shut down and losses, changes in the way we do everything, and RHDv2 complicating the rabbit world. But now, it looks like we can get back to some shows. I’m not sure it will be exactly the same as it used to be, but people are out and showing a bit now, and it feels good!

I want to congratulate all of the Nationals 2021 winners: Amber Henderson and Angel LeSage for Open BOB and BOS, respectively, and Bettina Curletto for Youth BOB and BOS. Due to RHDv2 restrictions, the show was moved last minute to Merced, California. I understand that those who were able to attend had a wonderful time. The pictures of all those smiles sure left me wanting to be showing.

Elections this year will be held for District Directors in odd-numbered districts, and for president.

We did have a few new faces complete the requirements to run for office, and a few of our current board folk will be stepping down. The board year and new board positions begin at the General Membership meeting at ARBA Convention, which means those board members who are leaving service in this capacity will be with us for a few months yet. I encourage all of you to seek them out during the next few months, and thank them for serving the membership! Meadow

I will have much more to say in thanks to them in our next issue of the FLUFF. This is a fine time to remind you all that the entire club is staffed by volunteers. Everything that happens for your club, and for you as members, is done by a volunteer. Whether it’s a longer term and longer time commitment, such as serving on the board or a committee, or a shorter term, one-time effort, everything that we are able to do is done by a volunteer. I am so thankful for each and every person who helps to make this club run!

And speaking of volunteers, there will soon be ample opportunity for many, many folks to step up and help. The ARBA Convention is happening this year (hooray!), and the club is charged with running our breed booth, and with making the Jersey Wooly portion of the show run smoothly. We begin our planning for Convention in June. Please consider saying “yes” to helping out if asked.

As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.”

Vice President’s Report “Now that Nationals is over, we are looking forward to Convention. ”

For many of you, show season is just starting as you venture out after a year in shut down. Between Covid and RHDv2 it has been a challenging show year. It is great to see old friends and show buddies again. It is not all about the competition in this hobby, but the great friends you make. One of the things I love is that I have friends from all over the country.

Now that Nationals is over, we are looking forward to Convention in Kentucky. I have been to Kentucky for several ARBA shows and have liked the location. If possible, and you live anywhere close, be sure to attend.

With that being said, one other thing you need to do is make your barn bio-secure, and vaccinate your rabbits when possible. As serious exhibitors, we all are depending on each other to keep rabbits safe from the RHDv2. We are becoming very interdependent on each other. Just like other rabbit disease prevention, we need to be prudent and careful. The RHDv2 virus is scary and we need to educate ourselves and practice prevention in our barns. By doing this, it will make shows safe for rabbits and we can get back to having fun with our friends without a lot of worry.

If you are not sure how to tackle securing your barn, there are several articles in this issue. ARBA also has a lot of information on its website

and Facebook page, and many state USDA sites also have good information. Call a friend to bounce off ideas on the best approaches. We are all in the same boat and what you have to do is take one step at a time to make it happen. As you get going it will get easier.

Back to talking about Convention in Kentucky: for the National Club (NJWRC), there is a lot of planning that goes into the show. It is not just the host club for Convention. but each national club including the NJWRC is responsible for its breed at the show. There are many things that we work on, such as: running our breed booth, raffle, rabbit auction, board and membership meetings, and a banquet. An NJWRC committee also reviews any COD animals going up for review by the ARBA standards committee. All of this makes it exciting and busy. If you want to get more involved with the club there are many opportunities at Convention, just ask.

I am thrilled to report that we were able to have an outstanding 2021 JW Nationals show this year! What did it take to carry out a successful Nationals this year? There were many components for us to consider. But first, congratulations are due.

Congratulations to Bettina Curletto for her amazing BOB, BOSB, and Best Wool wins at the 2021 Jersey Wooly Nationals! I was really impressed with the gorgeous rabbits that graced the Youth show tables at Nationals. The Group winners were truly stunning representatives of our breed. We may have one of the smallest Youth memberships of all our districts but the quality is high so you should all be very proud of your accomplishments. Keep up the great work! Speaking of our Youth, I am happy to report that Youth membership in our district is growing.

Hooray!

Big congratulations to Angel LeSage for her BOSB win at JW Nationals with LeSage’s The One. He is the man and has proven it many times over at big local and national shows! Very well done. I am humbled to have the honor of being awarded BOB with LeSage’s Harmony - a beautiful and solid doe out of my own Wonder’s Devine and sired

by Convention and Nationals BOSB winner LeSage’s The One. Congratulations to all our Open Group winners!

Comments throughout Nationals weekend from judges (Nationals judge Adam Schuller, WCC judges Scott Rodriguez and Nate Burbridge) confirmed that the quality of the animals shown ran deep across all breed Groups. I am excited to see these same animals and their offspring at the ARBA Convention in Louisville this Fall!

It drew attention and compliments from WCC exhibitors and the CRCS show committee. It was an excellent

show for several reasons. Perhaps the most important contributing factor is that...

1. The PCWRC is a team whose individuals are comfortable in volunteering and letting others run with their delegated tasks.

2. Our plan was solid from the beginning.

From submitting our bid to carrying out our plan, the implementation of hosting a quality national show was well researched and planned out.

3. We planned to remain flexible knowing there may very well be big obstacles come up. We planned to work through them and adjust as they came and we did just that. And boy, did that come to play well in our favor.

We began our planning meetings over a year in advance of the show and worked through the obstacles as they came.

We saw the Northwest Jersey Wooly Breeders’ diehard, can-do attitudes as inspiration. In our planning, we knew we’d have to plan for Covid restrictions and more. We talked together about safety and risks, biosecurity and tried to stay level-headed based on what was actually happening in front of us, not rumors nor fear of possible obstacles.

I was impressed with the efficiency of communication as circumstances changed quickly. Thank you to our CRCS liaison, Lori Robasciotti, our Nationals show secretary liaison, Angel LeSage, our resident RHD expert and news reporter, Michaeline McConnell, and our “down to the wire” working Youth coordinator, Allison Curletto.

Your work made all of our work possible which enabled PCWRC to carry out an amazing show. Well done!

Shows are making a comeback up here in D3! We’ve had several in Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and the Dakotas since March. For those I’ve been to, everyone seems happy to see their friends and fellow competitors, and to get their rabbits back on the table! Our shows have been fairly well attended by

fellow wooly enthusiasts, though our weather has been very uncooperative. The temp swings the entire nation has experienced are certainly affecting our coats, but not our spirits!

Great thanks to our well-respected judge, Adam Schuller, who gave great consideration and care to every animal and shared thoughtful and precise comments to exhibitors. Special thanks goes to CRCS who plowed the way to making this show happen. ARBA representatives present at the show expressed admiration and gratitude for what CRCS accomplished by overcoming the obstacles to putting on this show. All of ARBA was watching CRCS and PCWRC and taking notes.

Hosting an excellent Nationals show during a pandemic in a country where RHD is endemic is no small feat.

The PCWRC brings a lot of valuable experience to the NJWRC! District 2 looks forward to sharing our experiences and support with other specialty clubs across the country in order to help ensure many successful and safe Nationals shows to come.

Hello District 4 members, I hope everyone is doing well! I miss you all!

Tomorrow I will be showing for the first time in months and I am super excited.

I know we all have things that happen in our lives that tend to take us away from what we love and that has been the case with me. But I’m back at it and so thrilled to get to go to a show and see my friends!

I’m also excited to see all the youth that have come to embrace the joys of raising Jersey Woolies! We have so many youth breeders right now in our breed and that is a great thing.

We need the youth to continue what we have all worked so hard to achieve with this fantastic breed. To carry on our lines and improve upon them.

With the enthusiasm I see in some of these youth JW breeders I know they will do just that!

We, as the more experienced breeders, need to make sure to try to be helpful when the youth come to us with questions. I know that you all already help so much with the youth and I love to see it! Also ask the youth coming to you with questions and such whether they are members of the NJWRC. Let them know how to become members.

Tell them about the scholarships available for youth breeders.

We need to encourage and help our youth. Otherwise, why are we even doing this?

National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club Memorial Scholarship Youth Scholarship Application

Up to two Scholarships will be awarded in an amount of $1,000. The application is due by April 1st. Please answer all the questions completely. The application needs to be typed in a separate document with question answered within a narrative format. Send applications by email to Angel LeSage at lesageswoolies@icloud.com and to NJWRC Secretary njwrcsecretary@ gmail.com. You will receive a conformation that the application was received.

Scholarship Recipients: • Must be a member of the NJWRC for a minimum of the last 2 years.

• Must be completing high school in the same year as applying for the scholarship.

• Must be planning on attending a college, trade school, or other type of education in the same year and planning to use the funds for school expenses.

• May only be awarded the NJWRC memorial scholarship one time.

• Will need to submit a completed application to the committee no later than April 1st of the year that the scholarship

is to be awarded.

• Need to have two letters of reference. The letters can be from a school officials (teachers), 4H or FFA advisors, etc.

Please include in the letter how this person knows you. These letters can be submitted separately to Angel LeSage at

lesageswoolies@icloud.com. In the email subject line put scholarship application.

2021 Wooly Nationals were held in California due to Covid and RHVD issues instead of Reno, NV. For those that were able to rearrange their travel, hotel reservations, and transport on a short notice, I commend you. Congratulations to Amber Henderson for BOB, Angel Lesage for BOS in Open, and to Bettina Curletto for BOB and BOS in Youth.

Another summer is upon us; meaning very high temperatures on the menu for the South. It also means hurricane season is right around the corner. Normally, the season starts June 1. However, as I write this article, a weather group I follow on Facebook states that a tropical disturbance may be in the northern gulf as early as May 22, 2021. Although this article will be printed after May 22, it’s a perfect time to state to all to get prepared now for summer stressful weather events. Get those spare travel cages on hand in case of having to evacuate due to tornadoes, hurricanes, fires, or floods.

I attended the TRPOA and LCRBA show in Muscle Shoals, AL the beginning of May. We had a small turnout of Woolies, but had 5 exhibitors of which a couple was fairly new to the breed. Wooly people always have a good time, and this show was no exception.

In looking forward to the future, I bred and have a few nest boxes with Convention hopefuls. With the quality of the Woolies I have been seeing on the show tables, Convention competition will be tough for 2021.

After a long year which was sparse of shows, it seems things are starting to pick up. I hear a lot of chatter from clubs about resuming their show schedules this summer. I’m sure we’re all crossing our fingers that everything will return to a more normal way of life, especially in the rabbit world.

So, guess who’s STILL caught up?! That’s right, me! Well, mostly, anyway!!

We have LOTS of new members, which is AWESOME! So, it’s a good time for some reviewing. The NJWRC sweepstakes website isn’t a requirement of my appointed position with the club. It’s something I do (and fund) myself because I think it’s a valuable asset to the membership. I’m required to supply points reports only 4 times per year – but I always “aim” for about every 6 to 8 weeks to have them on the website. This isn’t always possible because – well, life! I work morethan-full-time as an exporter, and there’s always something new brewing somewhere in the world making my life far more difficult than it needs to be! Most recently, it’s BREXIT – I love my UK peeps, but really, why?! Anyway! I just want you all to understand the website is a plus, not a requirement. It’s also a good time to review how sweepstakes really work, so below is a rerun of Hm, Sweeps…

The 20/21 season, while nearly over, is still a moving target! The number one issue that we Sweepstakes Chair Type People are experiencing is NOTIFICATION, NOTIFICATION, NOTIFICATION! If we’re not being contacted by host clubs, we have no idea what’s going on. We may (or may not) see Facebook posts, hear rumors, etc. – but until I receive actual notification from a host club, I cannot make any changes nor even make notes about shows. If you see shows on my sanctioned shows listing that are canceled, please reach out to the host club and remind them to contact national clubs. It doesn’t matter to me if they have a new date yet or not – at least I could update with something. It’s getting pretty frustrating. If you had told me a year ago we’d be entering another YEAR of this, I wouldn’t have believed you!

So – help us Sweepstakes Chair Type Peeps out and remind clubs to let us know. There isn’t a single national club that wouldn’t appreciate news, whether there’s a new date yet or not. (You can totally quote me on that!)

New sanction requests are finally starting to pick-up again! I’ll be heading to the bank twice a month again it seems rather than only once, which has been the standard for the past 10 or so months.

In Normal Times (who even remembers those times anymore?!), I went 3 times a month pretty much without fail. COVID changed that, and I’m happy things are

Hm. Sanctions. Reports. Points. Ever wonder what my whole process is, from start to finish? Well, even if you never wondered, I’m going to tell you anyway!

First things first – Get the envelope out of the mailbox and open the envelope!

Following me so far?!

Most of my Rabbit Mail is made up of sanction requests, as most Host Club’s email reports.

Sanction Handling: It’s my goal to issue sanctions within 24 hours of receipt. Many times, though, mail received on a Friday isn’t done un-

til Monday. But, generally speaking, they get done the next day. Upon opening the envelope, sanction requests go in one pile, reports in another (see Report Handling below!), they are sorted by breed. Sanction requests are 1st reviewed for duplication in my Excel Sanctions Logs (being VERY careful that I’m the correct breed’s log!). Once I’ve determined this is a new request, the postmark date, received date & processed date are noted. The payment method (check #, money order #, or the occasional cash) & amount are also noted. I apply the appropriate endorsement stamp to each check (being VERY careful that I’m using the right breed’s bank stamp!) and I write in my sanction number on the paper request, which I base on the ARBA #’s.

Smart, right?! Then, each request is added to the Sanctions Log for that breed. The info included in the log is the date received and processed, and how (email or mail).

The club’s name, secretary info, show location and date, the breed’s season, ARBA #’s and my assigned numbers. Essentially, the log contains all pertinent info on the show, so in case the paper copy would get lost or something, I’d still have 100% of the needed information. I’ve got the logs set up to automatically determine the date the report is due as well, which is included in the sanction I send to the club. It also notes my billing month & bank deposit date. Bank runs are made 3 times per month, pretty much without fail. Once the shows added to the logs, I generate the sanction that will be sent to the Host Club. Then email the sanction/s to the SS (being VERY careful to be sure I’m in the correct breed’s email!).

Sanctions being sent by regular mail are printed & mailed. Then the show info is immediately added to the Sanctioned Shows listing that is updated on each breed’s sweepstakes website pretty much once per day.

After the sanction is issued, the paperwork goes into a “sort in after bank deposit” slot in the Open Sanctions envelope, keeping them in the same order as they appear on the log. This is a very handy little step in case there is something weird in my bank deposit – it’s very easy then to pull out all of the requests that should be included in the current deposit. has been deposited, the paperwork is then sorted into the monthly slots, sorted 1st by show date, then show location (State/ City), and lastly by club name.

REPORT HANDLING: Then, later (sometimes MUCH later!), the report shows up! Emailed reports are immediately printed and a return email is sent confirming receipt (even if they don’t ask me to confirm!). Before sending the Thanks! email, though, I always briefly review what I’ve received for any glaring problems – missing pages, wrong breed (yeah, it happens!), etc. It’s embarrassing (and much more difficult to get an answer!) if I immediately reply confirming receipt, and 2 days later I realize I’m missing pages or something. So I always try to take a quick look at it to be sure there isn’t anything glaringly wrong with it. The report is then logged on the Sanctioned Shows listing with the date I received it, how I received it, and the current status of the processing (RTW, RTCML, RTE & HOLD – keep reading if you’re not too bored yet to find out what all these exciting abbreviations mean!). The date received and the manner in which it was received is recorded on the paper as well. The original sanction request paperwork is pulled from the open sanctions envelope & matched to the report/s.

checked using the 1st membership list received in the month following the show – December shows / January listing. This ensures that anyone that joined the club during the month of the show is sure to receive their points.

RTE (ready to enter): Yahoo! After all that pre-work, I’m finally ready to roll! The reports are entered – and when complete, the fill color on the Sanctioned Shows Listing is changed from yellow to light gray.

The bulletin deadline is noted on both the Sanctioned Shows Listing, as well as on the paperwork.

Once entry is completely done, the paperwork is ready to scan. All reports (and correspondence regarding the report, as well as the original sanction request), are scanned as PDF files individually, and are then uploaded to my Google Cloud. Once the upload is complete, all paperwork is recycled. If something comes up with a report, I can download it again from my Cloud, print it, note any issues, and then it is rescanned & uploaded again with the extra notes. Once the scanning is done, it’s noted on the sanctioned shows listing with a “G” in the scanned column (in case you ever wondered what that was, which you probably didn’t because it’s really not that interesting!).

RTW (ready to work): The RTW phase is the most “flexible” for when / where I can work on it. It is during the RTW phase that Bonus Points, Quality Points & Ear #’s recorded. I don’t need a computer to do this, and often do it in the middle of the night when I can’t sleep! I try to do this part as soon after receiving the report as possible, since this is the point at which I would find any errors in the report that weren’t glaring enough to be caught in the 1st review. ☺ Luckily, the VAST majority of reports are received complete & perfectly fine!

HOLD (holding for next new membership listing). We don’t see the HOLD one very often, as most shows are not that expedient with getting reports in! These reports stay in the RTCML envelope until early the following month when I’ve received the updated membership listing from our valued Club Secretaries. ☺ Then the membership is checked & the report can be entered.

Hello to all the members of the NJWRC! I hope this article finds you all doing well. We have our elections coming up for the odd-numbered districts and our president position. Ballots should be coming out in August, and I ask that everyone please take a little bit of their time and fill those out and send them back. All of our voices are important and need to be counted.

Many things are up in the air with the current situations going on in our country, but I would like to think that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know around our area that shows were really hit hard with the uncertainties of things going on, but that is starting to change.

I would like to encourage anyone that would like to run for one of the many positions available on the board to take the opportunity and try it. Hello fellow Jersey Wooly breeders.

With RHD rapidly spreading this spring, we need to be ever vigilant on our biosecurity. The article that was in the fluff written by Cheryl Loesch can be found on our website njwrclub.org under the more tab and then education. District 8 shows are starting to get back to normal, and I just want to reiterate ARBA’s rule that if you travel through an RHD hotspot, you should not attend an ARBA show for 60 days. We all need to work together, not against each other, on this important topic.

This month I would like to talk about transparency and show etiquette.

Transparency: the condition of being transparent. Transparent: having thoughts, feelings or motives that are easily perceived.

Nobody likes to waste their money, and a reputation for selling rabbits with issues will travel amongst our small community.

I want everyone to know how very much I enjoyed working for the club and District 9. Although I have closed the rabbitry, I have wonderful memories of so many folks in the fancy. We have an awesome group of fanciers.

My late father was a High School educator and athletic director for 39 years. A few years before he passed, a county councilman worked with the high school athletic club to name the stadium at the high school after Dad. When they celebrated the naming of the stadium, my father was well into his battle with dementia. We were thrilled Daddy was able to recognize everyone that night.

Many of his former students, faculty members, and fellow coaches attended.

The Perry Hall High School community was simply part of our extended family. At a gate entrance, the stadium dons a sign that reads, “Compete with Character.”

That was the mantra Dad lived by.

As rabbit fanciers, how do we compete with character?

First, we should encourage others. We need to do our best to welcome newcomers into the fancy. When we see someone new at the shows, we need to give them a reason to come back. Many years ago, I made friends with some truly outstanding people. Somehow, they have always drawn me back into the rabbit fancy. Try to be the reason people want to attend a show.

Second, be honest in your dealings. We have all heard a few stories that left us in

disbelief. Sell healthy, quality animals to people. Share breeding stock and help other folk succeed. I remember one family buying quite a few mediocre rabbits for hefty prices. They didn’t last long. One season and they were out. It saddened me.

Third, breed to improve. Find knowledgeable breeders to help guide you on your efforts. I know having to compete with some clever breeders in my area forced me to raise the bar and strive for improvement. In D9, we helped each other. At every show, we spent more time socializing and putting our hands on each other’s rabbits. We learned from each other. If someone needed a specific trait, a rabbit was quickly switched from one carrier to another to help someone improve the stock in their barn. We didn’t simply set our own bar high, we set the bar high for others, and helped them move in the right direction. We shared. It is just as important to improve the breed in your competitor’s barn as it is to improve the quality in your own barn. After all, what is the fun of not having any competition? I am thankful for the countless hours spent with people like Fran Haskins. She offered valuable advice and always made for keen competition on the tables.

Fourth, focus on the friendships. I have so many wonderful rabbit pals. Certainly, you will find me at the shows! Even though I am no longer breeding, I will attend shows to see my pals! D9 is a family. Somehow, a mutual interest in rabbits brought us all together! We have so many clever breeders. Thanks to everyone for being

Fifth, enjoy the show and not simply the wins. While winning on the table is fun, it isn’t half as fun as hanging out with your rabbit friends. I am a very competitive person. I like to achieve success. I’m sure everyone in D9 will remember how often I was spotted grooming a rabbit at shows. Thankfully, I am a great multi-tasker. While grooming, many wonderful conversations took place. We didn’t just talk about rabbits. When the judging is finished, congratulate the winners. They surely worked hard to earn their wins. D9 is a family. We celebrate each other’s successes.

Lastly, avoid the drama. It seems it is easy to fall into the negative. Smile a lot. Mean it. Life is short. Focus on the positive. Like any fancy, the rabbit world has some negative energy. Avoid it. If you are having trouble finding a happy place at rabbit shows, I can only offer you this advice: The D9 Wooly folk are the reason I have been in and out of rabbits so many times. I miss the people and end up cleaning rabbit

Looks like it’s a go for ARBA Convention in Louisville, Ky this year! That is so exciting! Since it’s fairly close I hope ALL of District 5 can attend! If you can’t go think about sending some buns with a friend. In, the meantime, breed hard, cull hard, and show, show, show! Most important have fun, make memories and friends!

I would also like to mention some showroom etiquette. If you have children, please keep an eye on them. It is not up to other people there, or the show committee, to watch children. Keep your carriers and chairs to a minimum space, stacking carriers to allow for other exhibitors to have room. We all have seen the campfire circle at a show. And lastly, please be mindful and keep your area clean, it is not up to others to clean up after us. Pickup your trash and make sure when you are grooming to keep your wool off the floor.

Be on time to the show table. Showing up late, slows the show down for everyone. If the show is waiting for your rabbit for some time, I have witnessed a judge place said rabbit last. Just something to keep in mind.

Keep in mind to not talk about your rabbits or to others about their rabbits until judging is completed. It is an ARBA rule to not identify your rabbit to the judge.

This should go without saying, but do not show rabbits that are sick or have disqualifications. You should not be trying to “get one by” the judge. If you know it has a disqualification, then by all means keep it in your breeding program, not on the show table. It is not fair to the judges, or your fellow competitors.

My final thought on show etiquette is showmanship. Winning is why we all breed and show, but not all can win. Some say winning solves everything, but act like you have been there before. When you do not win, congratulate the winners graciously, and when you win be polite. We all just want to enjoy the hobby that we love.

OPEN BEST OF BREED

AMBER HENDERSON AND LESAGE’S HARMONY

I am humbled to have been given the honor of winning Best of Breed with this powerhouse little doe, LeSage’s Harmony. From the first time her feet hit the show tables until this past Nationals show, whether locally or nationally, she has always placed within the top rabbits in her class right among my best Broken does that are BIS, RIS, ARBA Convention Breed and Group winners, and top 5 Rabbits of the Year. Harmony has grown and developed as I had hoped she would and has impressed me beyond that.

The story of this beautiful doe is in her name. LeSage’s Harmony came to me from experienced breeder and former NJWRC President Angel LeSage’s barn. Harmony was sired by her ARBA Convention and NJWRC Nationals BOSB winner LeSage’s The One, a rock solid, super smooth, wonderfully wooled Blue buck. The One also started out strong from the first time he hit the tables. Harmony is the result of what has proven to be a smart blending of LeSage’s and my own Wonder’s lines. Angel had her eye on a doe of mine for a while, Wonder’s Divine. I was not quite ready to part with Divine because I had not got offspring out of her yet but we both thought Divine was the right doe to be added to Angel’s breeding program. So, Divine went to Angel with an agreement that I would reT h e

ceive a baby out of Wonder’s Divine x LeSage’s The One which we thought would be a great match. And what sweet harmony that match was!

Several months later, LeSage’s Harmony came to my barn and I have enjoyed watching her grow, show and develop ever since. I have looked forward to the time Harmony would grow into her full potential and beat my own does at a national show. I really enjoyed seeing that happen.

But, because I was busy filming the show results, the reality of that long-awaited moment didn’t actually hit me until about a full minute after Best of Breed was announced.

But there it was all at once - that flood of the gravity of what just happened came over me. I had waited for this moment from the first time I paired up Harmony’s sire and dam in my mind, knew what they might produce and had hope for a doe like Harmony. And here at Nationals that creation had proven itself fully. It brought me feelings of such gratitude and joy that I had to hold back a few tears.

Thank you for this opportunity, Angel. Thank you to the stiff competition given by the masterful breeders I have been blessed to be able to show against. The top-notch Jersey Woolies you all so consistently produce and help others produce inspires me to do the same.

BIOSECURITY MEASURES FOR YOUR RABBITRY

BY CHERYL LOESCH We’ve all heard that the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease virus 2 (RHDv2), has hit the Southwestern United States, as well as being considered endemic to the area of Victoria, BC, Washington state where it showed up two years ago. Now RHDv2 has spread to wild populations of rabbits and hares.

Though this is the first time we have seen the disease spread into wild populations, it does not necessarily mean the virus has mutated, but that it has now been observed and tested in those populations. What this does mean for us is that there are more vectors for the virus to transmit more rapidly. We know that the virus is “non-enveloped,” or does not have a fatty protein barrier around it. This means that it can spread more readily, via many sources, and this is why some refer to RHD as a “sticky” virus.

RHD Spreads by via oral, nasal, conjunctival cavity contacts with the virus from: • Fomites (clothes, shoes, furniture—anything that’s come in contact with a contaminated source) • Contaminated food/water • Equipment • Flies, vermin, predators • Infected rabbits’ excretions The virus can be spread by insects and predators that have eaten or had contact with infected animals. Any pest that has come in contact with a source of infection can spread the virus wherever they go. You can spread the virus on your clothes, hands, shoes, car tires, etc. There is a vaccination, however, it is not readily available as yet.

Our best protection against RHDv2 is to take biosecurity measures to protect our rabbits and rabbitries. This boils down to 3 basic steps: Control, Close, Clean.

Control what comes into your rabbitry: pests, feed sources, germs. Your best defense is to keep out things that might contaminate your animals. Screen your windows and doors and/ or use other insect control measures. Find and plug holes that could allow rodents or other predators into your rabbitry. If you keep a cat for handling mice in your rabbitry, you may need to either keep that cat entirely inside, or entirely outside of your rabbitry, so that it cannot track virus particles back into the rabbitry.

Keep food in pest-proof containers, and consider stopping any forage feeds that you cannot guarantee are free of contaminants. Do not share equipment. This means grooming tools, grooming mats and tables, cages, etc.

Close your rabbitry to outsiders. No people in or out who don’t need to be there for animal care. Quarantine new animals, or animals returning from shows for at least 30 days, and care for those animals after you’ve cared for all others. Don’t allow your rabbits outside of your rabbitry, except for travel that must be undertaken, and then quarantine them upon return.

Remember that disinfecting requires cleaning first- disinfectants are generally deactivated by organic matter.

Clean and disinfect your rabbitry, equipment, and your clothes frequently. Clean first, to remove any organic matter (wool, feces), then use a disinfectant that will kill the virus (see below). Use a footbath or disinfectant foot mat at the entrance to your rabbitry.

Wear clothes and shoes or boots dedicated just to your rabbitry, and clean them immediately upon finishing your chores. The importance of washing your hands before and after handling your rabbits, and between handling

rabbit groups (non-quarantined and quarantined) cannot be understated.

Because RHDV is a calicivirus, it lacks the fatty envelope that most viruses have, its infectivity is NOT reduced by ether or chloroform and trypsin or quaternary ammonium compounds. What disinfecting agents will kill the RHDv2 virus? You can use the following in your disinfectant sprays and footbaths: The RHD calicivirus is inactivated by sodium hydroxide (1%) or formalin (1-2%), as well as 1.0–1.4% formaldehyde or 0.2–0.5% beta-propiolactone at 4C (39F). Chlorine dioxide at 10 ppm concentration also kills this virus.

Other suggested disinfectants include: sodium hypochlorite (1:10 dilution household bleach), substituted phenolics, such as 2% One-stroke Environ® (Vestal Lab Inc., St. Louis, MO), and potassium peroxymonosulfate (e.g. 1% Virkon-S® by DuPont).

Finally, establish a relationship with a veterinarian. Exotics or livestock vets are probably our best sources for medications, and for the RHD vaccines, when they become available.

What does it mean to have a bio secure rabbitry?

Michaeline was hit early on living with the RHDv2 virus dilemma and has had a systematic approach to biosecurity. The following is a series of questions to help you get started with biosecurity in your barn.

Michaeline, I understand the area you live in is where there is a lot of RHDv2 in the wild rabbits/hares? Have there been a lot of restrictions on being able to show?

I live in San Diego county. We have had only 2 official

wild cases from May 2020-Feb 2021. The counties north of me, Riverside/San Bernardino/Los Angeles/Kern County have had far more confirmed wild cases. Due to the first wild confirmed cases near Palm Springs, Ca on May 11, 2020, my herd has been in near total lockdown and restricted from showing due to ARBA rules implemented last Summer. There were a few weeks that my area was not within lockdown and I could (and did) attend a few shows.

ticular how did you decide how you were going to deal with the virus and protect your herd?

I first learned about this virus via an acquaintance in New Mexico. In late March 2020, my friend messaged me that they had to depopulate their herd due to contracting RHDv2. They gave me some basic information and said to get ready for it to arrive in my area.

I immediately joined an RHDv2 group on Facebook. I then read all I could online and discovered that this virus was already in Europe, UK and Australia for many years. I educated myself on their protocols and also that there were several vaccines available in Europe.

I decided to prepare my physical space before RHDv2 got to my state and await the approval for any vaccine in my state.

To start protecting my barn, I looked at how this virus is transmitted. It is not airborne which is good. It can only be physically transmitted via contact. After reading scientific papers and personal stories, I summed up that humans end up being the main vector of transmission. In addition, carriers can be other animals such as rodents or pets, insects, birds, carrion eaters, and predators. The virus can also live-in dirt, on equipment, in feeds such as hay and fodder for up to 15 weeks in high or low temps, on clothing, shoes and many other places where no host is available.

Sealing up the rabbitry and altering my habits were imperative to reduce transmission possibilities.

Next, I had to find a way to kill the virus for anything going in or out of the rabbitry. Diluted bleach at a 1:10 solution was effective. Also, Virkon S mixed with water to its proper ratio was also proven to be effective. Both have to remain in wet contact with surfaces for 10 minutes to kill RHDv2. I personally chose Virkon S because it was more readily available at the time, whereas, COVID had reduced all bleach supplies in stores.

My main tools in preparation for the upcoming virus was to seal my rabbitry from possible vectors, changing my habits to keep me from being a vector, and using an effective viricide on equipment and items that enter the rabbitry, What does Biosecurity mean related to rabbit husbandry?

Each individual has to define biosecurity for themselves and what level of risk they are willing to take. In the beginning, biosecurity meant no rabbits in or out of the rabbitry. Complete lockdown. I sealed my floors to prevent anything coming though the boards (my rabbitry is in a screened porch on raised decking on one side of my house). I sprayed Virkon S on everything going into the rabbitry. I even sprayed Virkon S on my tires and the steps of my house. I use special shoes for the various areas: outside, inside the house, and in the rabbitry. My rabbitry is screened but I also have automatic fly sprayers for any stragglers that get in.

When I buy hay, I make sure it is from a non RHDv2 39

area, and I transport it from car to rabbitry on a brand new, purchased tarp. I break apart the bale and place it in plastic tubs. The tarp is then disposed of. In the beginning, I used plastic food handling gloves to feed.

I rarely touched my rabbits for months and I made sure to change into clean clothing before entering the rabbitry, and not touch my dog until after I finished my rabbit chores. I did not breed or consider showing. I rarely groomed--thank goodness most had molted and were in short coats right around the time the virus was confirmed in our state! I also stopped allowing my rabbits to play on the ground. They are in their cages, or on the grooming stand. If I want to let some play in a play pen inside the rabbitry, I will apply Virkon S to the floor. I have covered my floor in the washable rubber mat interlocking pieces used in schools and gyms.

These can be cleaned and sanitized.

What are the steps you have taken to have Biosecurity in your barn? Are there things you do on a regular basis? Could you walk us through what you do?

Today, I am not in crazy lockdown mode. Most of my herd is vaccinated But, my biosecurity is still high. My feed and hay are all in sealed tubs/bins. I have shoes for just the rabbitry. I have a bottle of Virkon S that I make up on a weekly basis by the door of the rabbitry. So, anything going into the rabbitry can be sprayed down before entering. The fly sprayer is constantly going. My screens are relatively new and are in very good shape. I am the only person allowed in. And my dog cannot come in, ever.

So, my day begins by opening my sliding glass door, I have a small table that I can reach in and grab my water jugs. I grab those and fill in my house without even stepping into the rabbitry. I then take off my indoor shoes (crocs) and then step into the rabbitry shoes (a different color of crocs). I water rabbits, and then feed everyone. Cleaning cages is easier and safer now with the use of spa liners in the trays. I just gather up the plastic with the waste and place in a new garbage bag that I can then haul off to my dumpster. No taking trays outside to dump, wash and sanitize! My goal is to be in and out of the rabbitry as few times as possible. So, my day usual sees me entering and exiting the rabbity twice a day--morning and evening.

How do you move from your Biosecure barn to a rabbit show? Are there any additional things to consider and do when going to shows?

To go to a rabbit show, my main thought is not to have anything touch the ground. Carriers are placed in the

car without touching the ground from rabbitry to car. I then will load my rabbits individually from rabbitry to carriers that are in the car, changing shoes of course along the way. I also have a fresh batch of Virkon S in a spray bottle readily accessible when I drive. I drive in my outdoor shoes (crocs again!) and spray then every time I step onto the car. I also try not drive through hot zones. As RHDv2 spreads, everywhere is becoming a hot zone. I try to make as few stops as possible, and sanitize my shoes every time I have to step out and get back into the car. (Sometimes, I have even brought inside car shoes and a bag with outdoor only shoes as an option.)

At a show, I will spray my area with sanitizer, and have something clean to place my bags on. Last show I used a sun visor for my car. I placed the sun visor on the pre Virkon S sprayed ground and then had a nice spot for my bags & cooler. At a show, I do not let carriers touch the ground. I kept them on a show cart. If anything drops on the ground, I have Clorox bleach wipes to sanitize and let sit for 10 minutes.

I make sure to have space around my area and not get my rabbits too close to other rabbits, just to reduce my risk. I know I cannot eliminate my risk of transmission, but just like snuffles, vent disease, etc. you do what you can to reduce the risk of getting unwanted diseases.

As I am packing up, I note what has touched the ground, and spray before placing back into the car. The legs of my chair, the legs of my grooming stand and the wheels of my cart get sprayed with Virkon S before placing back into my vehicle.

Ideally, you should then isolate and quarantine your show stock for 30 days. For RHDv2 the incubation times is 1-5 days. I personally never have quarantined my show stock from my brood stock because they are one and the same. So, I accept that increased level of risk. Anyway, when I get back home, I unload my rabbits individually back to their cages and then wait to unload the car the next day. The following day, I wash and sanitize all equipment before storing.

Living and showing with RHDv2 means building good habits that reduce transmission and being always aware of your current situation and how it can be a transmittable moment. Risk for contracting RHDV2 can never be eliminated but it can be reduced through biosecurity, controlling interactions between the rabbitry and the outside world, sanitizing properly, and vaccinating when available.

In summary, you have to think about what you are doing all the time to keep biosecurity in place. It will become a way of life in short order, but first you have to start with the process.

POST-NATIONALS 2021: THE VALUE OF HELPING OTHERS SUCCEED

There are a lot of lessons to be learned from putting on a successful Nationals show. I want to tell you about one clear lesson that was solidified for me leading up to and during our Jersey Wooly Nationals show this year. That lesson is the value of helping others succeed.

I’ve struggled with my rabbits. I have always struggled in a good way and I know that most of you do, too. I love the challenge of dissecting our Standard of Perfection and piecing together a more perfect Wooly to fit the ideal by using the genetic materials I’ve gathered together and stored in my barn. It is a very fun, frustrating, yet satisfying kind of challenge that fuels my dedication to keep going. However, in the past three and a half years, I necessarily shifted my focus onto my health and family while I battled T h e

cancer. The rabbits had to be put on the back burner. I reduced my tiny herd even further to ease any burden on my family. I kept my most genetically important animals. And then, as it happens sometimes, lost my keystones. I lost my bucks.

Those whom I regularly show against, know what dire straits my breeding program has been in. The competition: what happens when your competition knows you’ve lost your aces? I’ll tell you what they do. They do everything they can to help you be successful in getting your breeding program going again with the best animals they can provide. This is what my fellow competitors do. We help others improve their herds. This is what has bonded our friendships and excelled the depth of quality of our herds locally and nationally.

It is that kind of selfless support of others that prompted me to share this short story in our JW Nationals exhibitor gift bags: There was a farmer who grew excellent quality corn.

Every year, he won the award for the best grown corn.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learned something interesting about how he grew it.

The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbors. “How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbors when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?” the reporter asked.

“Why sir,” said the farmer, “Didn’t you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn. If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbor grow good corn.”

So it is with our beloved rabbit hobby. When we help others to improve their Jersey Woolies with good qualities that will eventually fill the gene pool, we wind up improving our own Jersey Woolies in the process. The

truth is that when we support each other, we all win!.

As exhibitors; as competitors; as friends, we help each other succeed. The same can be said for planning and carrying out a successful Nationals show. I want to acknowledge that PCWRC’s inspiration was the Northwest Jersey Wooly Breeders club member’s diehard and can-do attitudes in pulling off the 2020 JW National show. PCWRC members are also grateful for the individuals who, having a selfless perspective and sense of community about the rabbit hobby, cheered us on in our work and wished us nothing less than great success!

Some will support you and help you to rise to success even if it means the light might not shine on them for a moment. Listen to and surround yourself with those who will lift you up. They are not naive. They know what they’re doing. They have the interest of the whole hobby at heart. Those are the kind of exhibitors who you want to be able to call “neighbor”. ELECTION CAMPAIGN BIOGRAPHIES Each year, we have elections for some of the board positions. This year, we will be voting for odd-numbered District Directors, and President. Ballots will be sent out in August, returned by September 1st, and candidates will take up their positions following the General Membership Meeting at Convention in October.

Below are short bios for those candidates who met the requirements to run for election.

I am Cheryl Loesch, and I’m running for a second term as President of the NJWRC. I was previously the Vice President for two terms, and D3 Director before that. Over the years, I have served as Chair of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, Managing Editor for the Fluff, a member of the Standards Committee, and have volunteered many, many hours at Conventions and for other club needs. I’ve also had the pleasure of being President for a local Specialty Club, the Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club. That club is gearing up to host its 4th Nationals for the NJWRC. I have been the president during three of those Nationals.

Most of you know that I came into this hobby through my child, as many of us have. He showed in youth starting in 2008, and we learned together about this breed. In 2012, I started with my own small herd, and by the next year, Pi Hollows was my rabbitry entirely. Once we got started with that one little Wooly, there was no turning back. I am deeply committed to bettering this breed, and to stewarding the club to the best of my ability. I thank you for your past support, and for considering me for the future.

I have been raising rabbits for most of my life, and Jersey Woolies hold a special place in my heart. Being born into rabbits, I grew up at shows, participating in 4H and FFA events in my youth, and now I get to raise my kids in this wonderful hobby! I may be a little biased, but I think Woolies are the best and our club members are even better.

Hello District 7! I have had the great privilege of serving this district the last couple of years. More than half of that time has been under the Covid era. One thing this whole tragedy has shown is how resilient, supportive and kind our Wooly community is.

Hello D9 Jersey Wooly Breeders. My name is Michelle Landis and I am honored to be running for your D9 Director. I have meet so many wonderful breeders in our district, and am excited to get to represent you in our National Breed club. I grew up raising approximately 100 meat rabbits with my older brother and my Dad. We didn’t show them as we were raising them for meat. It was a lot of work, but I treasure all of the fun and memories that I have from it. I have been the lucky show mom for my kids Ashley and Cody since we started in rabbits in 2011. They have raised and shown many breeds over the years, but Jersey Woolies stole our hearts from the beginning and have been here ever since. In Jan 2021, Cody and I decided to split the rabbitry and I started showing in Open for the first time in February. I am absolutely loving getting to show alongside so many amazing breeders that I also am blessed to call my friends.

We have been members of ARBA and NJWRC for over 10 years. We also are members of PaSRBA and I am the Treasurer & Show Secretary for the North East Jersey Wooly Breeders club. I have been the 4H Assistant Leader to Christy Przybylowski in Carrot Crunchers Rabbit & Cavy Club for over 5 years. I love getting to help our youth learn more about rabbits and sharing in their excitement for this amazing hobby.
