President’s Report “For those of you going to Nationals, you are sure to have a good time.” ~ Cheryl Loesch It’s hard to believe that Spring is just around the corner for us. I am hoping that this year will give us some relief from COVID-19, and that we will have more rabbit shows available to us. Of course, we cannot ignore the RHDv2 virus, and I encourage you all to continue following biosecurity protocols to help keep your rabbitries as safe as possible.

Jersey Wooly Club, is looking forward to the event. There won’t be a banquet this time, due to Covid rules, though I know the club and its members will be as warm and welcoming as ever. For those of you going to Nationals, you are sure to have a good time.

Vice President’s Report “Nothing for the club can be accomplished without plans, goals, and you.”

~ Angel LeSage

Will 2021 be the year that you reach your goals? Have you been able to establish goals for yourself and your herd? For a lot of us, COVID-19 has allowed more time to spend with our rabbits and to work on improvements through breeding. Plus, you can line up new shows to attend, make improvements to the rabbitry or get more involved with the NJWRC. Without goals or well laid out plans, we tend to just aimlessly move forward without knowing where we want to end up. One does not end up with first place or breed or BOB at convention by accident. It takes planning and work to accomplish these goals. Same goes for NJWRC, nothing for the club can be accomplished without plans, goals and you. Members are the pulse of the club and the board is the backbone of the club. Your input matters in the NJWRC, just as your herd depends on you to feed and water. Take some time to think about what you can do to help the club. What talents do you have that can be shared? I know many people have ideas and many of them! Contact the President, Vice President, or District Directors and/ or volunteer your services or help give a start to a new member. This year get involved in your club!

Once again, the annual election takes place next summer, we are planning on making some additional amendment changes to the Constitution and Bylaws (CBL) for the club. This document still consists of original language that was developed in 1983. Can you imagine those days before computers and emails? The Board met in person once a year at Convention and the rest of the year they wrote letters back and forth to conduct business. Few long distant phone calls were made because they were very expensive. I got my first computer in 1985, and was not really into email for another couple of years. The CBL is very important for the club. It provides a road map for the club on how to conduct business, as well as outlining procedures and practices. Needless to say, in some areas, our CBL does not reflect how we communicate and conduct business in 2021.

Sweepstakes/Sanctions Report “I don’t think anyone thought back in March that we’d be still dealing with viruses- human and rabbit.” ~ Nicole Schmitt So, guess who’s STILL caught up?! That’s right, me!

Nicole Schmitt njwrcsweeps@gmail.com

The 20/21 season, while well underway (we’re more than half-way through) is still a moving target! The number one issue that we Sweepstakes Chair Type People are experiencing is NOTIFICATION, NOTIFICATION, NOTIFICATION! If we’re not being contacted by host clubs, we have no idea what’s going on. We may (or may not) see Facebook posts, hear rumors, etc. – but until I receive actual notification from a host club, I cannot make any changes nor even make notes about shows. If you see shows on my sanctioned shows listing that are can-

celed, please reach out to the host club & remind them to contact national clubs. It doesn’t matter to me if they have a new date yet or not – at least I could update with something. It’s getting pretty frustrating. If you had told me a year ago we’d be entering another YEAR of this, I wouldn’t have believed you! So – help us Sweepstakes Chair Type Peeps out and remind clubs to let us know. There isn’t a single national club that wouldn’t appreciate news, whether there’s a new date yet or not. (You can totally quote me on that!). -Nicole

Historian's Report Bethany Robertson, the NJWRC Historian, is working to compile a collection of articles, photos, and periodicals of historical significance to NJWRC members. If you have items in your collection, contact Bethany at: bethanyrobertsongm@gmail.com.

Bethany Robertson NJWRC Historian bethanyrobertsongm@gmail.com

Hello everyone! As the club historian I have been able to collect issues of The Fluff and other documents dating back 20 years. It has been truly fascinating looking back through these articles and getting glimpses of how our breed grew and developed. Seeing long time breeders that are still involved, watching some of our members grow up in the hobby, and being able to appreciate the words of those we have lost that contributed so much to our breed has

been an amazing experience. My hope is to continue adding to what we have and eventually create a library of sorts that our club members can access and continue building on the foundation of knowledge that has been shared within our club. If you have anything that you would like to contribute, please let me know. All the best, Bethany Robertson

spoken in a while.

Here in Oregon, we had some interesting weather, with sunny warm days turning to a terrible ice storm that knocked out power for 2 or 3 days, took down many, many trees and still, a week later, leaves us with no cell service. The rabbits fared well, however, tucked safely in their barn. A couple of patio heaters kept the barn warm enough to keep the waters from freezing. Everything is thawed now and hopefully Spring will come quickly and breeding can resume. Really hoping we will have more shows this year and I get to see all the faces I miss so much!

President’s Report Continued from Page 5 The club requires lots of volunteers to keep things moving and get everything done that needs doing for your organization. All of your board are volunteers. Each year we have an election for a portion of the board positions. This year, the positions up for election are President, and District Directors in the odd-numbered districts. Please consider running for a position! There is more information in this edition about what is required to run for a position, and you should feel free to ask question of any board member. Nominating petitions are due in by May 10th, ballots are sent out in August, and the new board members take their seats after the annual membership meeting at Convention.

The funds earned from the auction help the club with the everyday expenses needed to keep operational. We lost out on last years’ revenue from the auction. Hopefully we can go forward with auction this year. Please consider donating a nice rabbit to the auction if you are approached. And we can always use help with many of the activities, including manning of the club booth. For those who can attend Nationals on April 10, 2021, I look forward to seeing you. Angel

District 6 Report “...I am wishing safe travels and best of luck for those who will be attending [Jersey Wooly Nationals].”

~ Tracey Freeman

Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, & Puerto Rico

The weather has been crazy this quarter. Louisiana has had some 70-80 degree weather, but as I write this, our local weather channel is stating we can see a high of 30s with a low of 10 at the beginning of next week with freezing rain and a chance of snow flurries. For us southern folks, that means it’s time to break out the long johns. For my woolies, it means stuffing the cages full of hay, shutting the automatic waterer off, putting water bowls in each cage, and filling up numerous gallon jugs to provide water for my fluffs. I know other parts of the country are dealing with mounds of snow and having to dig their way out just to get to their barns. I am thankful for the small things, as my inconvenience will be only temporary.

I had a chance to attend the Dalton, GA show at the end of January. It was a triple and we had a good turnout of wooly exhibitors with 60+ Jersey Woolies in one Open show alone. Unfortunately, we did not end up with any Best or Reserve in Shows. I, however, want to congratulate all the Jersey Wooly BOB and BOS winners in the triple show. I want to make a brief mention and send congratulations to Brenda Reilly for being inducted into the NJWRC Hall of Fame. She has been with the club for many years and have made numerous contributions to the club. CONGRATULATIONS BRENDA REILLY! Nationals will be held in Reno, NV in April 2021. I do hope that RHVD and Covid does not rear their ugly head to the point restrictions will be imposed, preventing the majority of our exhibitors from showing. With that being said, I am wishing safe travels and best of luck for those who will be attending. As always, please feel free to email me pictures, wins, funny Wooly things that have happened. Spring is finally nearing! As the daylight increases my does are showing more signs of readiness to breed. Some are moody. One started to build a beautiful nest. In anticipation of Spring litters, this is a good time to inspect the nest boxes, throwing out the overly chewed or worn ones (if you use wood boxes) or rusty boxes (if metal is used) and buying more if you anticipate the need. In my colder region I prefer wood to metal. The babies stay warmer. I also enjoy the ability to customize them. Depending on the doe, I may make a box that is a

15

different size than standard if I know her preferences. I make the front a bit taller than bought boxes to keep the babies in until they are old enough to leave safely. The downside is, of course, they don’t last as long as metal and are harder to disinfect to my satisfaction. I’m hearing chatter from a few local clubs that they have high hopes of hosting shows later in the year. Let’s all cross our fingers that events allow this to occur. Mae Swan

Hello fellow rabbit enthusiasts. This Fluff finds us still in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, and RVHD still having outbreaks. With little to no shows, I hope everyone has had the opportunity to fine tune their barns. Now is the time to evaluate your herd, cut back where you can, choose what you want to work on in your herd, and breed, breed, breed. Hopefully once we are all vaccinated, we can get back to having shows everywhere. I hope everyone is safe and enjoying time at home with family. Yesterday, posts came up on my social media feed from last year’s PaSRBA. It reminded me of how much life has changed. No 2021 PaSRBA! I always enjoy that show. It has been nice to see posts of everyone’s wins at the few shows being held this year. Some of our members are traveling quite a distance to attend. I have been conservative with my outings and tried to stay a bit closer to home. It is fun to hear about everyone’s show success. I always enjoy messages letting me know that rabbits I have sold did well at a show. The rabbit fancy has allowed me the good fortune to meet some amazing people. It is always nice to spend time with our local Wooly crew. I’m excited to visit with our D9 crew. A few local shows have been planned for Spring. Spring! I am already tired of Winter. Sunshine always brings a smile. I have sent several pairs/trios off to

newcomers. It will be nice to have more people get involved in the hobby. For those of you attending shows, promote our breed. Woolies are awesome. Sell good ones. A nice win can hook someone on the breed. Show and breeding stock should be of high quality. Too often, we watch as mediocre rabbits are put up on the table. Raise the bar. Cull hard. When a rabbit you sold wins, it might not count in your Sweeps points. Still, it paints the picture of the quality in your barn. Years ago, I remember a breeder being upset that a dog she sold was winning over her “keepers” in the ring. I didn’t understand it. She was the breeder. The little dog’s wins should have brought her enormous pride. I miss everyone. Be safe. I am forever thankful for the awesome folk in D9. Billy

NJWRC NATIONALS • YOUTH BEST OF BREED

When I first started with Jersey Woolies, I was completely smitten with blue torts - it was the only variety I wanted! Homestead Smokescreen is a 2016 blue tort buck who was bred by Marge Thornton but I acquired him from Julie and Lindsay Aversa at PaSRBA in 2018. Smoke is a lovely boy who has a tendency to have “extreme” molts where he goes nearly bald! He was one of very few Woolies in our barn that molted early in the summer. While planning my entry for 2020 Wooly Nationals, I had overlooked him, favoring a few

younger rabbits. My mom encouraged me to pull him out again and consider adding him to my list. I was pleasantly surprised to find he had blossomed and finished his coat beautifully in addition to maintaining really nice body condition! I was excited and humbled to win BOB and I appreciate judge Matt Bishop for recognizing him. I am truly thankful for my mom convincing me to bring him!

NJWRC NATIONALS

YOUTH BEST OF OPPOSITE

CODY LANDIS & AFB’S BROOKE I had a lot of fun showing with the other youth breeders, and was very surprised when I won Youth BOSB with AFB’s Brooke in the National show under Judge Matt Bishop. She is a young broken black SR doe out of AFB’s Panda Bear x AFB’s Patty. Her sire AFB’s Panda Bear is the #3 Youth ROTY for 2019-2020. She has been doing very well on the show tables this fall and has 5 legs so far. She was The morning started out VERY cold and frosty. My BOSG Broken in the Open JW Specialty in Augusta, NJ mom was nice and let us hang out in the truck to stay on 10/25 which was really cool! warm. Thank goodness that we brought blankets, winter coats and gloves. Later, it got sunny and warm I want to congratulate Rachael Walkup on her Youth so it was a lot more fun to hang out with everyone BOB win at Nationals with her really nice Shaded SR Buck and Casey Roman with his Youth Best JR award. under the tents. I hope that we get to see a lot of you at shows this 2020 has been a rough year for everyone, so being able to stay off NY’s quarantine list and going to JW Nationals was great. It was fun with everyone bringing tents and setting up together. I was so glad that my sister Ashley came too. We missed everyone who couldn’t be there and wish that more people could have come, but...Covid happened.

NJWRC Editorial • Breeder Spotlight: April & Kaitlyn Sefcik

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT FEATURED BREEDERS: APRIL & KAITLYN SEFCIK HOPEWELL RABBITRY In this column, we ask a breeder to answer questions about themselves, the breed and the hobby. Breeder Spotlight: April and Kaitlyn Sefcik

Wooly was our breed.

Rabbitry Name: Hopewell Rabbitry Number of Holes: 50 Location: Struthers, Ohio

Our first mentor was Katie Inche, who was a successful youth and open breeder of woolies and AFLs. She helped Kait in getting and breeding her show stock. She always said show the best and keep your best brood stock. Katie is still a friend with Kaitlyn; both are busy with careers and family.

Kaitlyn started showing rabbits in 8th grade after learning about the ARBA. She started with Jersey Woolies and Holland Lops. The Jersey Wooly won our hearts, and the

We decided on the name Hopewell Rabbitry because we were told to pick a name that is characteristic of your area.

The Hopewell was the first furnace built in Ohio, in what is now our hometown of Struthers. Any in District 8 remember their Ohio history I would say that one of the best memories I have is when Hopewell’s Pavorotti was sold at the Golden Fleece Auction in Indianapolis, breaking the record for highest sale! I still have several rabbits that go back to him. Goals in the barn are always changing. When you improve on one thing, then you have to work on something else down the line.

T h e

31

At the moment, I am working on the chinchilla color. I have both blue/grey and brown eyed rabbits. I just love the color, but I still need to breed for conformation. The most important goal for myself--and for all breeders-is to promote the hobby, our breeds and to help new people. After all, that is how we continue this hobby. Still, when the time comes that I need to leave this hobby and adventure, I pray that the friendships that I have made will always be a part of my adventures throughout the rest of my life. I also want to thank my husband Joe for being my support and my travel partner.

NOMINATION BY JULIE AVERSA

32

S p r i n g

Brenda Reilly has been a supporter of the National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club as long as we have been involved with raising rabbits. She has been the ram-rod at Convention, Auctioneer at the Golden Fleece Auction, and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. She serves as treasurer on the Board, and has served many terms as D3 director. She has volunteered to transport numerous GFA rabbits and care for them at Convention. She has won a BOB at convention, and helped out at Nationals and Convention shows. She is a big supporter of shows in general, and is always willing to help anyone in need.

T h e

F l u f f

33

We had a difficult time at one Convention, and it was Brenda that talked to Lindsay and told her to not let other people dictate her narrative. Lindsay was ready to sell out, and it was Brenda’s kindness that made her calm down. I have witnessed, too many times to count, when she has told Youth breeders that they could breed to ANY of her bucks if they wanted. We ourselves were told that while in youth. What a great thing to help and mentor and encourage youth to stay in breeding and showing. It is for this reason we are nominating Brenda Reilly for the Hall of Fame.
