President’s Report “We are looking forward to the 2022 Spring Nationals in Stillwater, MN!" ~ Cheryl Loesch Perhaps the most significant board action in these past few months has been approving the recommendation made to us by the Standards Committee to ballot the membership, as allowed in ARBA’s new “vote in process” for including chocolate and lilac colors in all eligible varieties (pointed white, tort, otter). A ballot will be out soon to the membership, please watch for that in your mail, and return your vote as soon as possible. As you’ll see with this newsletter, we have also decided to move to a new format. Our aim is to make the e-news as accessible as we can, while allowing for a wider range of choice when editors change, as they do at times. The next 2-3 issues will likely have some changes to the formatting as our new editor, Jordan Hobbs, tries out different techniques in the quest to find the best format. Our ultimate desire is to have newsletters available and accessible to you, our membership, on the website. Upcoming dates to be aware of are the Scholarship due date of April 1. Any youth in their senior year of Highschool may apply for a $1000.00 scholarship by following our application guidelines, available in this newsletter and online.

Scholarships are given out to youth going on to any form of secondary education, whether that be college, trade school, or another type of higher education. Candidate Nominating Petitions, Biographies and Photos will be due in by May 10. This year, even-numbered district representatives are up for election or re-election, as well as Vice-President and Secretary. We are looking forward, at this writing, to the 2022 Spring Nationals in Stillwater, Minnesota! The Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club is our host this year, and they have been busy with planning. You can see more detail on the flier included here, and on their Facebook event page. I look forward to seeing many of you at the National show!

Vice President’s Report “If you see a newbie at the table, be friendly, get to know them." ~ Angel LeSage
Our club membership numbers have been slipping. I think Covid and RHD have been hard on exhibitors. If you see a newbie at the table be “friendly”, get to know them. It can be very meaningful to them to receive a kind and encouraging word, a small piece of advice, or a congratulations when a big win is achieved. Make it a positive experience for them. This is the stuff that keeps people coming back. With this in mind, Nationals is coming up (April 30). Think about bringing some of your stock to sell, this may give another person the opportunity to acquire another bloodline not readily available in their area. Or transporting a rabbit back to another person who cannot attend. This helps people to get a good start to build rabbits that are competitive and makes it more fun for newbies to show. Plus, I think it makes it more fun for everyone if a new breeder is successful. Believe it or not, when you help new breeders, it actually increases your showing numbers and makes the region stronger in the types of animals that are being put on the table!
Once again, the annual election takes place next summer, we are planning on making some additional amendment changes to the Constitution and Bylaw’s (CBL) for the club. This document still consists mostly of original language that was developed in 1983 when there were no computers, no emails, no Facebook. The Board convened in person once a year at Convention and the rest of the year they wrote letters back and forth in order to conduct business. Communication was difficult and took a long time to accomplish anything. Needless to say, things have really changed since those days. Communication is so much easier and faster. However, throughout the years, the CBL has remained very important for the club. It has provided a road map for operations and how to conduct business, as well as, outlining procedures and practices. Slowly, as needed, we have been updating this document to make changes to reflect how we communicate and operate in 2022. I anticipate in this summer’s election we will have updates for membership to approve.

Spring is a great time to reevaluate your herd and set new breeding goals. I personally love taking advantage of the warm weather to spend more time in the barn preparing for shows and planning future pairings.

As I write this article, we’re right smack dab in the middle of Winter. Louisiana has seen some 20’s, sleet, and snow. Of course, we’ve also had warm days in the upper 70s. I saw a Facebook post that said Mother Nature is throwing out temps like the Power Ball, all over the place. With that being said, I haven’t bred my does, but will be doing so soon. I personally do not like having kits born in the middle of Winter. However, Spring is right around the corner with warmer temps.
Jersey Wooly Nationals will be happening in Stillwater, Minnesota on April 30, 2022. I plan on attending and ask those who can, please come out and support the show. In ending, please send me pictures, tips, and Best in Show wins. As always, I can normally be found on Facebook and messaging me is the easiest way to contact me. I haven’t attended any shows lately, but a big one is happening in just a few days in Monroe, LA. Early numbers are suggesting 58 with 11 exhibitors in open and over 30 with 7 exhibitors in youth for one of the five shows. I’m really looking forward to the friendly competition. Sweepstakes/Sanctions Report ~ Nicole Schmitt Jersey Wooly – Sweeps for Dummies!

Each national breed club runs some sort of sweepstakes program. Each time you show Jersey Woolies at a NJWRC sanctioned show, you'll accumulate sweeps points. The NJWRC season runs from July 1st through June 30th of the following year. Below you'll find a summary of the points contests. As it turns out, I've found there are a lot of NJWRC long-time members that don't understand the whole program either, so you're certainly not alone if you’re a bit confused! Overall Sweeps consists of: *Class Points: In each class (for instance, Self Senior Bucks), points are awarded for the top 5 placements as follows: 1st place 6 points for each rabbit in the class, 2nd place 4 points for each rabbit in the class, 3rd place 3 points for each rabbit in the class, 4th place 2 points for each rabbit in the class & 5th place 1 point for each rabbit shown in the class. NOTE: NJWRC Spring Nationals & ARBA Convention use a different formula, through 10th place as follows: 1st -12, 2nd -9, 3rd -8, 4th -7, 5th -6, 6th -5, 7th -4, 8th -3, 9th -2 & 10th -1 point per number shown in the class. *Bonus Points: Best of Breed (BOB) & Best Opposite of Breed (BOS) bonus points. These points are awarded as: BOB 1 point for each Jersey Wooly shown. BOS: 1 points for each “opposite” Jersey Wooly shown – meaning if BOB is a buck, and you win BOS with a doe, you’d get 1 point for each doe shown.

*Best In Show / RIS / B4C / BOG Points: Should you win: *Best In Show (all breed shows only specialty shows don't count for this section), you will receive 1 extra point for every rabbit shown in the entire show. *RIS (Reserve in Show) / 1st Reserve: you will receive 1 half-point for every rabbit shown in the entire show (rounded up to the nearest point) *B4C (Best 4 Class): you will receive 1 half-point for each 4 Class rabbit in the entire show *BOG (Best of Group): there aren’t many shows that do Groups (ARBA Convention, Ohio Mini Convention are a couple off the top of my head): This one is a bit complicated because these BOG wins aren’t reported to me – if you receive a BOG win, you need to contact me. I will then contact the club to get the number of groups & total number shown for an average of number of rabbits represented in each group. You will then receive 1 half-point for each rabbit in the group. Award of Excellence consists of: Best of Breed (BOB) & Best Opposite of Breed (BOS) bonus points. These points are awarded as: BOB: 1 point for each Jersey Wooly shown. BOS: 1 point for each "opposite" Jersey Wooly shown meaning if BOB is a buck, and you win BOS with a doe, you'd get 1 point for each doe shown. (See Bonus Points as noted above – same thing here)

Continuation of "Sweeps for Dummies" Rabbit of the Year consists of: The individual rabbit also receives points, and they are awarded the same way the exhibitor is awarded the Award of Excellence points. The BOB rabbit receives 1 point for each Jersey Wooly shown, and the BOS rabbit gets 1 point for each "opposite" Jersey Wooly shown. (These are the same as the Bonus Points and Award of Excellence points outlined above.) Herdsman of the Year consists of: Truth be told, this one is a bit more complicated! For each BOB an exhibitor wins, they receive 2 Herdsman Points, and for each BOS an exhibitor wins, they receive 1 Herdsman Point. But, the exhibitor can only accumulate a maximum of 5 points with a specific animal. So, if you have a "hot" rabbit that's winning & winning & winning, the HM points stop at 5. Also, there are no HM points awarded unless the requirements of a Grand Champion Leg are met within the breed.
Wool Contests consist of: The NJWRC has both a White Wool & Colored Wool contest. The points are awarded the exact same way as the Overall Sweeps Points / Class Points outlined above, including the Spring Nationals & ARBA Convention expanded points formula. Youth Showing in Open: As per the rules, all NJWRC Youth members’ points are to be counted in the youth contests, even when showing in open. If you are a youth that shows in Open that wants your points left in open, kindly notify me in writing at your earliest possible convenience! The rules actually state this notification must be made by July 1st, but I’ll happily accept it at any point. Should you have any questions at all about how the points work, please let me know!

soon be spring. I hope your nest boxes will be full. Please keep in mind to hold one nice junior back for the Golden Fleece Auction at convention. Shows seem to be getting smaller all around. Perfect example was PASARBA, it was ½ the size it normally is. Whether it be from downsizing since Covid, or RVHD2. It is time to show support for your local specialty shows now more than ever. With less shows, smaller shows it will be harder for the host club for nationals to raise funds to host. We really need to rally together to support this hobby we enjoy. When I am writing this, Nationals are a little over a month away. I hope we have a great turnout, and I am sure fun will be had by all. So when you are reading this it will be time to start breeding to have juniors for the 2022 Convention in Reno.
Opal is the same as above but, head, body, and legs are to be a pale shade of blue, with darker blue ticking over an intermediate fawn band and a slate under color. Ear lacing is to be blue and the triangle is to be fawn with slate under color. Belly under color is to be slate, and the eyes should be blue gray. Faults are poor ring definition, very faded fawn band. DQ is a lack of slate under color. It is very common for opals in Jersey Woolies to lack belly under color. Also nails seem to also be an issue. Chinchilla is to have alternating bands of light pearl and black top color, above a narrow pearl intermediate band and a slate under color. Ear lacing is also to be black. The triangle behind the ears is to be white with a slate under color. Belly, underside of tail ,and inside of the legs are to have a blue-gray under color. Eyes can be brown, blue-grey, or marbled. Faults are for poor ring definition, or a brownish tint.

Now that it is February, I hope that many of you are planning to attend Jersey Wooly Nationals in Stillwater, MN in April this year. The Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club is planning a really fun weekend complete with a banquet on a River Boat Cruise. It is time to start looking over those juniors and seniors that you are hoping to show at Nationals. Go over them weekly, paying attention to their body and coat condition and adjusting their care & feeding as necessary so as to hopefully have them in peak condition for April. Strip dead coats, groom as needed to keep their coats matt free, keep nails trimmed to avoid broken nails & toes,

watch poo trays to catch any issues early and make sure that cages are always clean to avoid stains and disease. Basically, keep up your regular routine care and maybe a bit extra at times. Also, remember to take time to just enjoy these little balls of fluff that we are so blessed to own. Sometimes we all get caught up in showing and caring for them and we forget just how fun and silly these little guys and gals can be. I hope that your nestboxes are full of cuties, your seniors are turning into beauties and that you get to experience lots of bunny binkies and zoomies. Stay warm and healthy!

Hope this article finds you all doing well. The weather here has been tricky to say the least. But I hope that everyone is having luck getting those babies they need for juniors in the nest box now for convention. I am going to change it up this time and talk a little bit about some changes that we have made as far as how we handle memberships. All the district directors now have lists of all their members so they can keep in better contact with you guys. I, as well as the rest of the board, hope that this makes it easier to expedite renewals. Many of you don’t know me on a personal level so letting the district reps reach out to you may be more advantageous, as they are possibly someone that you are more familiar with. Our memberships have been holding strong and we are always working to try and make things easier to keep up on renewals. With the uncertainties that the virus has caused throughout the world, our mail system is no exception. So, I ask that if for some reason you didn’t receive something that you feel you should have, please reach out to me and let me know. I am only as good as the information that I have. Once most of the correspondence leaves here I don’t always know whether it has arrived or not.

The Great Plains Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club is planning our spring nationals show in Stillwater, Minnesota on April 30th. I am hoping that some of you will be able to attend. Should be a good time. I am also the secretary for that regional club, and I can assure you that a lot of thought and effort has gone into preparing this for the membership. Wow! Two things come to mind when I think about Convention 2021. One, what a whirlwind of an experience and two, lots of happy tears. This was the first Convention I was able to attend in person. The amount, variety, and quality of rabbits and cavies was just amazing to see all in one very large building. Thanks to modern day technology you can track your steps and when you see you have logged 20,000 steps a day, you’re like whoa! When people suggest bringing good comfortable shoes to Convention, don’t overlook this. It also shows just how much there is to see and do at Convention. My journey in this hobby that we all love started in September 2017 when I attended my first ARBA show. I am so thankful for the wonderful and very helpful rabbit friends I have met and continue to meet. The friendships you make along the way truly is the best part of the hobby! The laughs and fun you have with friends at shows and hanging out can’t be beat!
Nala is a homebred rabbit out of my first AOV litter, so it made the win extra special! I love every color jersey woolies come in, but will admit my two favorites are AOV’s and black otters. Nala has very dark point coloring and nice dark nails. Overall she is a very nicely balanced rabbit with a great coat. She has a sweet personality as jersey woolies do and just a little spunk to make her the Nala that I love!
Jersey Woolies were my very first breed of rabbit. I loved them from the very beginning, and they will always be my “heart breed”. So, to be able to attend Convention in person this year and win Best of Breed, it was so amazing and such an honor! The tears just flowed when Gordon Williams announced the AOV doe won BOB.

Convention was so much fun this year getting to hang out with all of our friends! Winning Youth BOSB with AFB’s Panda Bear made it even better. Panda celebrated by chewing holes in my sweatshirt. LOL! Panda (or PB as we call him) is one of those “once in a lifetime” kind of rabbits. He is awesome and yet so sweet and snuggly too. Panda currently has 36 legs which includes 6 BIS, 3 RIS, 23 BOB and 3 BOSB. He was also the Youth Best Junior at the JW Nationals in Louisiana. He is the kind of rabbit that we dreamed of for years. Panda comes from a breeding that combines Allstar’s lines and our old shaded/self lines. His sire Allstar’s Leo is a great broken black buck that has 11 legs (2 BIS & 3 BOB – 1 of them was Youth BOB at JW Nationals in Louisiana). We can’t thank Julie & Lindsay Aversa enough for letting us buy him a few years ago. He and his offspring have become the backbone of our Shaded, Tan and Self Jersey Woolies.

Panda’s dam is a big blue brood doe named AFB’s Charmaine whose pedigree includes AFB’s Zeke, Fuzzyville’s Show Me Off and Fuzzyville’s Broken Tear. She may not be much to look at, but she is solid and has produced some of our best rabbits. We have a bunch of Panda litters in the nestbox right now and we were also able to repeat the breeding that produced Panda. We are very excited to watch all of them grow up and mature. Congratulations to everyone that showed at convention. A special congratulations to Makayla Wallock on winning Youth BOB with her homegrown Pointed Black Sr Doe. She was beautiful! Congrats to Grace Anderson on winning Open BOB with your gorgeous Tan SR Doe and Congrats to Connie Forward & Steven Buell for winning Open BOSB with your stunning Chestnut SR Buck. There were soooo many beautiful Jersey Woolies there. - Cody Landis

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION
National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club Memorial Scholarship Youth Scholarship Application Up to two Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000. Applications are due by April 1st. Please answer all the questions completely. Applications need to be typed in a separate document with questions answered in a narrative format. Send application by email to Cheryl Loesch at momdeplume@comcast.net, and to NJWRC Secretary njwrcsecretary@gmail.com. You will receive confirmation that the application was received. Scholarship Recipients: Must be a member of the NJWRC for a minimum of the last two (2) years. Must be completing high school in the same year as applying for the scholarship. Must be planning on attending a college, trade school, or other type of post-secondary education in the same year, and plan to use the funds for school expenses. May only be awarded the NJWRC memorial scholarship one time. Submit a completed application to the committee no later than April 1st of the year that the scholarship is to be awarded. Include two (2) letters of reference. The letters can be from a school officials (teachers), 4H or FFA advisors, etc. Please include in the letter how this person knows you. These letters can be submitted separately to Cheryl Loesch at momdeplume@comcast.net. In the email subject line, type scholarship application.
