President’s Report “The cancellation of the ARBA Convention has left a huge hole for many of us, and has kept National Specialty clubs busy finding ways to complete the work that was done at convention. ~ Cheryl Loesch As I was working on the upcoming dates for the next few months, it really hit home just how many things have changed for our hobby since March. The cancellation of the ARBA Convention has left a huge hole for many of us, and has kept National Specialty clubs busy finding ways to complete the work that was done at convention. Annual Board and Membership meetings typically take place at Convention. This may be something we can try to host via Zoom, and I’m exploring that possibility. There are fundraising efforts that won’t happen, such as our Golden Fleece Auction. Most of you have seen that we are holding online auctions of goods via our club’s Facebook page. The auctions have received wonderful donations, for which we are very thankful. Additionally, bidder and buyers have enjoyed the events. You can find our page by searching Facebook for National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club, or by clicking this link: https://www. facebook.com/TheNJWRC/ . A huge thank you to our donors and buyers! Between the Coronavirus and RHDv2, very few shows happening, and those clubs that are hosting shows are working hard to meet the additional requirements. If you choose to go to a show, please comply with any requirements asked by the host club. These requirements are meant to keep you and your rabbits as safe as possible. Those clubs worked hard to be able to hold the show, and not following the rules could jeopardize their ability to put on future shows. Jersey Wooly Nationals had been scheduled to run with the Grand Finals show in Syracuse, New York

on October 17th. As of this writing, the host club, North East Jersey Wooly Breeders, is unsure whether this show will be occurring, and they are looking for other options to hold 2020 Nationals. Please keep an eye on Facebook for information on this event, and if at all possible, please support it by attending. In Board news, we have been working on some updates to the Constitution and Bylaws. This is ongoing work to update bylaws where they are out of date, or to improve them for better functioning of the club. You will have seen a couple of questions on the General Election ballot that deal with such issues. Thank you for turning in your ballots! Committee work also continues on the guidebook, and I’m still working on filling the Education Committee. Final Sweepstakes points are posted for the 2019-20 Sweeps Year (July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020). Sweepstakes are always fun to see, and this year, it is good to see people excited about their standings in spite of having a very truncated show year due to the Coronavirus. Please remember that NJWRC show sanctions must be acquired before date of the show; they cannot be granted after the fact. Our sweeps chair, Nicole Schmitt, has a sanction request form and all of the rules required posted on the sweeps site, http://www.njwrcsweeps.com/ . To check whether shows have been sanctioned, please view the “Sanctioned Shows” listing on the same page. You should check this list even if a show flyer lists Jersey Woolies as

Vice President’s Report “So, if you can’t control the barn temperature, bring your breeding bucks into the house during the day to keep them cooler...
~ Angel LeSage
For me, summers are very hot in central California. There are no shows and I find the heat drags on and on. This weekend is predicted to be 104. I run a swamp cooler in the barn which works well in the West’s dry heat. I use to call home from work to make sure the power was still on because the power company turns off the electricity when you least expect. Getting a generator helped immensely. We still have 6 weeks of heat left. It takes a lot to keep the rabbits safe and cool. My goal is to keep the barn below 85-degrees. Having temps 85 and above for more than 3 days will cause the bucks to go sterile. It takes 3 months or more to bring back their fertility. This can really impact your breeding program. So, if you can’t control the barn temperature, bring your breeding bucks into the house during the
day to keep them cooler, avoiding the 85-degree temperatures. I feel grounded between COVID and RHDV2. Some breeders here in California managed to get their rabbits vaccinated with RHDV2. This may be the way that we will have to go in order to be able to show. I feel in a tough spot right now with showing rabbits. For now, I am just treading water to see what happens. I hope things are getting better in other parts of the country. Usually this time of year I am talking about Convention. I always look forward to this event. I am so sad that we are not having Convention this year. I am hoping in 2021 will be a go. Take care and have a good fall.

membership, losing out in the long run.
I realize with all the commotion and excitement going on regarding the Covid-19 situation and the RHVD going around that shows have been minimal and sparse.
I am generally available if you have any questions about your membership and I will do my best to resolve any issues that may come up regarding that. For anyone else out there, if you think you have not been receiving the magazine itself or any other information, please make sure to check with me so we can rectify any situations. That would include corrections being made to your email or addresses. Like I have said many times in the past, I am only as good as the information that I has been provided to me.

Things were relatively quiet in District 2 over the summer. Exhibitors have been keeping tabs on the hemorrhagic virus (RHDV2) cases. Presently its boundaries include Mexico and every state in our district except Hawaii. ARBA judge Chris Zemny gave very useful information in a presentation on The Rabbit Show (Facebook) about how she organized a vaccination clinic she ran, in the central coast area of California, where just over 450 rabbits received vaccines. The vaccine, Filovac, was imported from France and needs to be renewed once a year. The cost was reasonable at $20 per rabbit and the clinic ran smoothly because of the work which preceded it. For more information on RHDV2 and how to obtain vaccinations in your area, watch The Rabbit Show presentations on the
9
subject and follow North Americans RHDV2 Group. Both are on Facebook. We have ARBA charter clubs to thank for the opportunity to show every once in a while in our district now. Folks are carefully choosing when and what shows they should attend based on their own circumstances. Breeding is picking up in the cooler weather, especially with fewer shows on our slate. So, whether you are able to attend shows or not, Fall, Winter, and Spring is “go time” when it comes to creating your next generation of winners. Take advantage of any down time to wisely breed your rabbits. I’m looking forward to seeing your beautiful creations in the next few months.

My oh my its been such a crazy year! COVID and RHDV has really put a hold to our rabbit shows. Some states are starting to try to host shows whole others keep canceling. All is personal choice whether or not to venture out. For me personally I havent been able to get out due to switching jobs again. Im finally back into the veterinary field
that I went to school for! Working only 4 days a week closer to home will help me get back into the swing of things with the bunnies. They have really been on the back burner for the past year or so. Hoping to start breeding again and seeing everyone at the shows! Until then everyone be safe! Haley

Hey District 4 members! This is a short report because unfortunately there’s not a lot to say seeing as we haven’t shown rabbits here in several months. Hope everyone is doing well. I know we just had some really bad weather with the hurricanes coming through, but I think most of our district managed to avoid the worst of the weather. I know there are a few of our rabbit family members that did not fare so well and we will all do our
10
parts to help those that we can. Fall is just around the corner, and I’m hoping that with Fall we will also get to show some rabbits again soon. I know between Covid-19 and RHDV-2 most shows in my area have been cancelled, but I hope things will get better and we will be back to showing soon! Until then, please stay safe and keep those rabbits safe! Kendra

Hello District 5! Hope you are having a good summer. We have had an unusual rainy and cooler July and start to August than we are used to in my area. Love it!
We have a few shows coming up in our district or close by for Sept. Labor Day kicks off Sept. 5th with Southeastern Illinois RBA at Sumner, Illinois.
I was able to attend a few shows in June. I traveled to Indiana, Tennessee and Georgia to show. It was so nice to get back out there and see my friends and make some new ones. All 3 shows had a good turnout for Woolies! Not sure exact numbers but I believe Manchester, Tn had around 30, Danville, Indiana 70 and Carrolton, Ga 50. We did well at all 3 shows but Carrolton, Ga was especially exciting! My broken buck, Mo Bunnies Domino came home with 3 Best of Breeds and 2 Reserve in Shows! It’s so exciting when Woolies do well on the BIS table!
Sept. 12 Crawford County Wild Hares at Marengo, Indiana Sept. 19 & 20 Phelps County & Mid Mo Quad Show at Sedalia, Mo. Covid 19 and RHD have caused all shows to make new rules and take precautions against these deadly virusus. Most shows are requiring masks be worn. Some states require health certificates for out of state animals. Please check before you go to see what new rules are in place. I hope to see all of you soon! Let’s get out there and have some fun!

My article for this Fluff magazine, in essence, will be brief. Governors from various states still have rigid mandates in place regarding gatherings due to Covid, which means I do not have many winnings to post. However, with that being said, I was able to attend the Summer Show on the Tennessee River held in Florence, Alabama on July 25, 2020. It was a single evening show with a very good turnout. I would like to congratulate Evan Daniels on his Best of Breed win with his Agouti Sr. Doe (pictured); breeder is Gayle Beireau. With all the heat, I was surprised to see our breed with some coat. Speaking of heat, it has definitely been a hot summer this year. I have my fans going and the sprinkler on the barn at the ready when temps get in the upper 90s. The heat index has been anywhere from 102-115. If your bunnies are getting too hot, throw a frozen water bottle in with them to get them to cool down if you do not have access to fans or air conditioning.
~ Tracey Freeman
As always, make sure they are not in direct sunlight as it doesn’t take long for a heat stroke to happen. I was looking forward to the upcoming ARBA convention in October. As everyone knows, it has been cancelled. This would have been my first convention that I would not have to be in a rush to get back home as I’m now retired. On the bright side, I hope things still progress and will be able to attend Jersey Wooly Nationals that has been rescheduled for November. As I stated in the beginning, my article is brief and in ending, if you have any questions or shout-outs, I can be reached via email at (tntscountrycritters@hotmail. com) or via messenger on Facebook. What a summer we have had! In many parts of District 7 we experienced a hotter and more humid season than usual. Yesterday I watched a clip from a local weatherman discussing this, explaining how coastal Maine usually reaches +90° an average of 5 times a year. As of this writing they had experienced 10 days of hot, muggy weather. This, of course, requires a little more effort from us rabbit enthusiasts to ensure our animals remain as cool and safe as possible. In 4 to 8 weeks our focus in care will be completely different; we’ll have switched from offering our rabbits frozen water bottles and fans to keep cool and instead be looking towards the colder months ahead. By October my barn, as with so many others, will have gone through its fall deep cleaning (pulling out all cages, burning/pressure washing them, replacing and repairing cages as necessary, and scrubbing trays, bowls and toys). I’ll be inspecting bowls in storage for cracks and switching everyone over to these bowls from their water bottles. Getting these chores done will be a little easier because much of my free time will not be taken up by preparing for and attending shows. But the downside is: there have been few to no shows to prepare for and attend. While many claim shows are primarily a social event for them, this became even more apparent once our events were put on hold. Yes, most of us have a competitive nature to varying degrees and winning can be satisfying, but shows are a place
15
where people of many different backgrounds, philosophical viewpoints, and goals can come together with a common interest, forming strong bonds and friendships. I know there are quite a few of us missing this social aspect to showing right now. With that context, it was wonderful to hear about NY’s first show since March, a collection of specialty shows (including Jersey Wooly) held on August 8th. (Side note: MAJOR CONGRATS to Cody for 2 BOB wins! From what I heard, this show had some amazing breeders putting up gorgeous animals and I suspect competition was stiff) Show A: Judge Donna Grimm BOB - Cody Landis with AFB’s Marshmallow AF435 (Broken Siamese Sable SR Buck) BOSB - Steven Buell & Connie Forward with Wendover’s AW1 self (REW SR Doe) Show B: Judge Kyle Yacobucci BOB - Cody Landis with AFB’s Marshmallow AF435 (Broken Siamese Sable SR Buck) BOSB - Christy & Katrina Przybylowski with 3Bears’ 3B10 Seal The Deal (Shaded SR Doe) (Photo) L to R: Connie Forward, Steven Buell, Christy Przybykowski, Michelle Landis Photo Credit: Steven Buell

Unfortunately, the reality of the world right now means no shows for our rabbitry. With limited shows it is hard times for everyone. Virtual shows and convention have become the norm at the moment. What do we do with our bunnies? Participating in virtual can be fun, but, I unfortunately can not take a picture to save my life. So, what can we do? Re-assess your breeding goals. Take a good look at your herd and decide on what needs to be worked on. Try some new breedings. Reach out to other breeders you enjoy seeing at a show. Try to share some knowledge with a new breeder. Really delve into the SOP and compare your herd to it. Research Biosecurity and prepare your rabbitry for when RHD comes closer to our district so that you are prepared. What to do with those babies in the nest box? Try to start a few new people in the hobby. We have a closed rabbitry . What does that mean? No one besides us are allowed into our barn. It is part of our biosecurity. We have a footbath for at the door and a disinfectant to clean with. We can and do meet people at an agreed upon place and keep a safe social distance to meet about rabbits. I just recently visited a rabbit friend out of state while I was visiting my daughter. It was really fun to feel and talk rabbits again. My goal is to get better at taking photos and swapping photos of rabbits to discuss. The best part of this hobby for me is the kits in the nest box and the people that I have met along our journey. Take advantage of this time of limited
18
shows to worm, or treat your herd. I know this is a controversial issue some people treat regularly and some only treat if there is an issue. I figure if they are gonna molt might as well treat at this time. We are going to worm and do a coccidia treatment during this down time. Another thing is to practice palpating. It can be frustrating to wait a month to find out your doe is not bred. You can avoid this by palpating your doe at 10-14 days after breeding. Learning to palpate takes a little practice. It personally took me about a year to be able to accurately palpate. Older does can be easier to practice on as their muscles are a bit more relaxed, and they have been through this before. First time does can tense up. We also have does that hold their breath, which can make it hard to palpate. With one hand, grasp the doe over the shoulders and take the other hand with the thumb and fingers opposing each other gently push up into the abdomen just in front of the pelvis. This can feel awkward, and this is where most people fail. Enough pressure can be used to raise the doe’s hindquarters nearly off the table without hurting anything. People who fail at palpation usually do so out of fear of hurting the doe or babies. The chances of this happing at this stage is very slim. Each embryo is cushioned in its own amniotic sac, so what you are feeling is the fluid filled sac, not the embryo itself. It will feel like a blueberry at 10 days a marble at 12 days and a grape at 14 days. Once

Due to the lack of shows and not a lot of hope for the foreseeable future, I decided to reduce the number of filled holes in the rabbitry. A good pal would often share this was always a smart idea. Ever so often, cut back to your best rabbits and breed them with the hope of strengthening your herd. I did just that. The workload has been cut in half and I have some promising babies in nestboxes. When I started to reduce my herd, I looked at each doe’s production record. Some animals are just made to carry on and others never seem to produce anything of merit. I held on to a couple nice bucks and let the rest go. It is not an easy task. I really had a hard time making cuts. Being that I have always enjoyed caring for my animals, it might seem that I have more time to do just that. Still, I firmly believe that it might prove a worthy attempt at saving some time and tightening up the quality in the barn. So many shows have been cancelled. I feel sad for the hard-working club members who put so much time into their show weekend. When the shows start up again, be sure to say thank you to every volunteer working for the club. Our hobby is so fortunate to have a very dedicated group of people working hard to provide us with the opportunity to show our animals. I have so many friends that I have not seen. No shows. I’m excited to get back to life as we knew it. We have been eating out at restaurants with outdoor dining. Wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and
19
keeping our hands squeaky clean, we are trying to do our part to keep others safe. The virus has claimed lives, destroyed businesses, and sent folk home without a paycheck. It’s not going to magically disappear. When I think about fighting Covid-19, it reminds me of a war. I am doing my best to be patriotic and fight for my community. I am thankful our salon is opened again and that we have very supportive clients. Some folk were not as fortunate. Businesses have closed. Consider helping out your favorite rabbit supply vendor and placing an order. With no shows, our vendors are surely suffering. I just decided to order new nestboxes and some new cage pans. Do I need them? Perhaps not right now. Still, I really wanted to support folk in our rabbit community. Steven Buell organized two specialties for our breed and a few other breeds. Sadly, traveling into New York required a period of quarantine for Maryland folk. We were one of the States on the long list of restricted States. I was disappointed not to be able to attend the show. Steven did an awesome job. THANK YOU, Steven. Masks were required. Social distancing was required. We owe Steven a huge thank you for doing it right. I am hoping to see more shows in our area. Hopefully, we can work together to keep the show environment safe. With cases of RHD on the rise, we should all try and keep up on what is happening. It’s going to change things for us. It is spreading. I am doing my best to follow any updates. We are all going to need to consider vaccinating our stock. There

Hello NJWRC Members! So, what a wild season THAT was! And sadly, I see it remaining wild for some time. On one hand, I am getting sanctions for shows taking place at once – and on the other hand, I’m getting cancelations for shows in November already. Updates right now on sanctions are a moving target. As you review these points, please contact me right away if anything seems

Once I feel an embryo or two, I stop and pet the doe and return her to her cage. The entire procedure only takes seconds to perform. Fecal pellets are located more central, closer to the backbone, they will be small and very hard. Hope you have full nest boxes. Please if anyone has any fun ideas we could do as a district please post them on our Facebook page (NJWRC District 8). I want to thank everyone that donated and participated in our online auction. This club will be ineligible to receive NJWRC sanctions during the newly-started 2020/2021 season. That’s all for now! Maybe we’ll see you soon?!

Vaccinating my stock will become a priority. With the cancellation of ARBA Convention, Bunnie Turley has been given the option to present her Oranges to the Standards committee in a virtual format. Best of luck. Bunnie is a longtime fancier and has worked so hard to promote Orange Woolies. I miss everyone. Hopefully, we will be back to business as usual soon!

ORANGE COD PRESENTATION 2020 TO ZOOM OR NOT TO ZOOM
To Zoom or not to Zoom, that is the question. Recently, I received a letter from Cathy Szychulda, chairperson of the ARBA Standards Committee, presenting the options to either present via a virtual Zoom meeting in late October or pick up at the next convention where we are currently situated, at the 1st try at 2nd presentation. Many details still need to be forthcoming about how the Zoom presentation will work, but currently, it is expected to be in late October, scheduled around the participants’ various schedules and time zones. We have been notified that pedigrees of the intended presentation animals must be submitted sometime in the beginning of October, with no last minute substitutions allowed. Although recommended, it is not required for the national club to review the animals. The removal of the option to make a substitution and the lack of certain details at this time, give me question to pause on my decision, but since I had a very good breeding season, I am inclined
T h e
F l u f f
to proceed with the Zoom option at this time. I have asked for some additional information with regards to the presentations and hopefully, will feel confident enough in the answers to proceed forward with the Zoom format. Since this is the first try at 2nd, 12 animals are required. The presentation must consist of two senior bucks, two senior does and eight other animals, all owned and bred by the breeder/ sponsors.Thankfully, unlike the first presentation, animals no longer have to be so closely related, allowing many more rabbits to be considered. Currently I have about 25 animals that I am seriously considering as possible candidates for presentation, and Christy Przybylowski has several herself. My plan is to have at least two animals from last year’s presentation, and the rest from the best of the gene pool, so that the improvements can be seen. The final decisions will be made as the October deadline approaches and we decide which animals are the best in type, wool, and color, as well in prime flesh and wool condition. Wish us luck!!!!

NJWRC Editorial • Genetics Made Easy
25
GENETICS MADE EASY BY JULIE AVERSA
This article is not meant to be a complete guide to rabbit genetics. It will address those common to Jersey Woolies. As a breeder, it is very helpful to have a working knowledge of rabbit genetics. I get questions all the time; “can I breed this to this” or “what will I get if I bred this to that.”. Type should be considered first when breeding, but producing unshowable colors is undesirable. I like to have as clean of lines as possible. For this article I am going to try and keep it simple. So, I will stick to the basics. The first thing is rabbits get 2 copies of each gene (Editor’s note: The word GENE refers to the genetic component that results in a trait. ALLELE refers to a version of a gene. Sometimes the terms are used interchangeably). The color genes we will discuss in this article are: A, B, C, D, and E. In each of these groups the rabbit gets 2 genes. Rabbits receive one allele from each parent. Each allele in a set of genes is either dominant or recessive. Dominant genes. All genes have a level of dominance. Dominant genes or alleles express (show) in the coat color. It is either visibly there or it is not present. It cannot be
T h e
F l u f f
25
carried. Recessive genes. You must have 2 copies of that gene for it to express in the coat. So, each parent must pass on that recessive gene. If only 1 copy is present, it does NOT visibly express in the coat. Order of dominance- in all color gene sets, there is an order of dominance of the alleles within that set. Note: We show by phenotype (how a rabbit looks), not by genotype, which is the rabbits genetic code. Therefore knowing the genotype is not required for showing your rabbit, but greatly helps with breeding.
A Allele A Allele-order of dominance A (agouti), at (tan), a (self) A-agouti is dominant and cannot hide. The other (at, a) can hide behind A. So, an agouti can carry tan or self. Ex. Chestnut, opal, chinchilla, squirrel. at -tan is similar to agouti in markings, but without the

26
rings throughout the coat; meaning, ear lacing, eye circles, and triangle behind ears are present. Tan (at) is dominant to self (a), but recessive to A. So one at allele can express itself in the coat if the other allele is a, therefore the tan can carry self, but not agouti. Ex. otter, Blue Otter, Sable Martin, Smoke pearl martin, Black silver martin, Blue silver martin. a (self)- self is simple, a solid colored rabbit from head to tail. Self is the most recessive allele in this set. It can be carried by A (agouti), or at(tan), but is a true recessive and to be expressed one allele from each parent is necessary, aa. AA=agouti, Aat=agouti carrying tan, Aa=agouti carrying self, atat=tan, ata=tan carrying self, aa=self
B Allele B Allele- order of dominance B (black), b (chocolate) B (black) is dominant and cannot be carried. The rabbit is either black, or black based, or it is not. Ex. Black, Black Tort, Blue Tort, Blue, Chestnut, Opal, Seal, Siamese Sable, Smoke Pearl, or Sable Point. b (chocolate)- reduces the black pigment in the coat making it look brown. b (chocolate) is recessive so each parent would have to carry it to get a chocolate offspring. ex.Chocolate, lilac, Chocolate Martin, Lilac Martin
cchlcch or cchlc) Rabbits that only have one shaded allele (cchl ) and a second recessive allele ( ch, c) will tend to be lighter. So cchl is recessive to C and cchd, but dominant over ch and c.
C Allele C Allele-in order of dominance; C (full color), cchd (chinchilla), cchl (shaded), ch (Pointed White), c (rew). C (full color)- is very simple, it allows a rabbit to have an even distribution of full color over the entire rabbit. C is dominant and cannot be carried. Black, Blue, Black Tort, Blue Tort, Chestnut, Opal, Orange, Black Otter, Blue Otter, or Chocolate. cchd (chinchilla)- results in most of the yellow pigment removed from the coat. Therefore, it results in a white color where the yellow would have been. cchd is recessive to C but dominant over cchl, ch or c. So, it can be carried by C but not any other of the genes.
Ex. Seal, Siamese Sable, Smoke Pearl, Sable Point, Sable Martin, Smoke Pearl Martin. ch (Pointed White aka AOV) The ch allele eliminates all the pigment on the rabbit that is below a certain temperature. This usually results in a totally white rabbit with pink eyes, but with color on the tail, legs, ears and nose AKA points. Since it is temperature sensitive, in the heat of summer, the point color fades. (It can also be overly expressed throughout the body in an animal that is chilled.) ch is only dominant over c (rew). So Pointed White will only be expressed if it is chch or chc. Ex. Black Pointed White, Blue Pointed White c (rew)-eliminates all pigment, which expresses as a white rabbit with pink eyes. It is recessive so must be cc. But keep in mind it still has a full genotype hidden within the other allele sets (A,B,D,E, etc). Someone once told me that it is like a white blanket thrown over the rabbit. It can still carry: Agouti, tan, or self. It can also carry or be non-extension (tort), or broken pattern of any of the excepted colors. CC=full color, Ccchd=full color carrying chin, Ccchl=full col-
Ex. Chinchilla, Squirrel, Black Silver Martin, Blue Silver Martin, Chocolate Silver Martin, and Lilac Silver Martin. cchl (shaded)-this gene erases all yellow pigment from the fur AND some of the dark pigment. The expression of this allele can be affected by the hidden alleles after it. So, if the rabbit is homozygous (carrying 2 of the same alleles, cchlcchl) it will be darker in appearance (like seal or blue seal) than a heterozygous rabbit (two different alleles, T h e

or carrying shaded, Cch=full color carrying pointed white, Cc=full color carrying rew, cchdcchd=chinchilla, cchdc =chin carrying rew, cchlcchl=seal, cchlch =shaded carrying pointed white, cchlc=shaded carrying rew, chch=Pointed White, chc=Pointed White carrying rew (not desired as it affects point color and size of smut)
D ALLELE D Allele-in order of dominance D (dense), d(dilute) D (dense), full or dense expression of color. D is dominant and cannot be carried. Ex. Black, Chocolate, Chestnut, orange Chinchilla d (dilute)-dilutes the coat color to a more washed out appearance. d is recessive, you must have two copies of d to express in the coat. Ex. Blue, Lilac, Opal, Squirrel, Blue otter, Smoke Peal, Smoke Pearl Martin DD =dense, Dd =Dense carrying dilute, dd =dilute
E ALLELE E Allele order of dominance E (extension), e (non-extension) There are several other alleles in this set, but they are not usually present in Jersey Woolies. E-extension leaves the hair normal. Dominant over e (nonextension). So, all rabbits other than tort, Sable Point or OrT h e

ange are E. e-non-extension restricts the extension of the black pigment. Because of the modifiers and smut at work ee rabbits come in a wide range of hues within the same color. Self ee rabbits resemble a shaded rabbit, therefore, as we show phenotype, they are shown in the shaded group, although technically not a shaded. e is recessive, so will not be expressed unless there are 2 copies (ee) Ex. Black Tort, Blue Tort, Orange. Sable Point. Note: you want to keep this gene away from ch (pointed whites), and A (agouti)*. It will mess the color up on both and wash out rings on agouti. *unless working with oranges EE=full extension, Ee=Full extension carrying non-extension, ee=non-extension
In conclusion, I want to take a brief moment to mention broken. En=broken pattern en=solid enen=solid Enen=broken EnEn=Charlie This gene can be influenced by various modifiers, resulting in a variety of patterns. Any accepted color, coupled with the broken gene can be shown, except pointed white. F a l l

BREEDER SPOTLIGHT FEATURED BREEDER: WILLIAM H. “BILLY” MILLER CROSSROADS RABBITRY In this column, we ask a breeder to answer questions about themselves, the breed and the hobby. Our rabbitry is about sixty holes. Currently, many of the holes are empty. I focus mainly on REWs and Agouti. I have other colors as well. Currently, I reside in Baltimore, Maryland. Why did I choose Jersey Woolies as the breed to raise? Well, I have shown rabbits on and off for a long time. I enjoy them. It seems I always lean towards the dwarf breeds. I prefer small dogs and small rabbits! I have been involved in the sport of showing purebred dogs for my entire life. With my husband and a few dear pals, I was an active breeder of Chihuahuas and we dabbled in a few other breeds. Our kennel produced many champions and we exhibited our dogs to some notable wins, including three generations of National Specialty Best of Breed winners and a significant number of BIS wins. Our dogs hold BIS records for the breed in both coat types. Quite a few years ago, I was at PaSRBA and I decided to go look at the Jersey Woolies. I had owned a few of them as a child. Wow. I was in awe of the quality. Tammy Cook had a beautiful entry of rabbits. I approached her about acquiring a trio. Luckily, she allowed GC Kyle’s 1AK to come home with me. He was a beautiful REW with a compact, upright, round body. I drove home feeling as if I had robbed a bank. My “AK” went on to sire a good number of winning Woolies. I had so much fun showing them. Sadly, being so busy with the dogs, I sold off my herd. I gave one of my winning REW bucks (WHITEY) to Andrea Ruck’s daughter, Katie. She made him ROTY. Even after I placed my stock, Andrea Ruck remained a pal. Years later, I realized how very much I missed seeing my rabbit friends. I decided to get T h e

involved again. Naturally, I wanted REWs! Why Woolies? I like their small size and sweet disposition. Why woolies? Because of the local people! We have an awesome group of exhibitors and I enjoy them! Who was/is your mentor? When I decided to get back into the hobby, several people were very helpful to me. Longtime Wooly breeder, Kim Cayton has always been there to answer questions. She is a clever lady. Another person who surely helped me along in my journey was Fran Haskins. Being a dog breeder, Fran has a similar background. Sitting around and going over stock with Fran was very helpful. I have always believed that, to be successful, you cannot live in a vacuum. The

more you talk about a breed, the deeper your knowledge will become. Some judges have helped me in my journey. Listening to them evaluate breeding stock allows you the good fortune of learning from their many years of experience. While I will not name specific judges, if you see me actively listening to their remarks, I am learning. The rabbit world has so many bright individuals. We can all learn by talking with one another. Always a student, I am least impressed by self-professed experts and more impressed by lifelong students. I am always learning something. I am forever grateful to Kim Cayton, Gayle Beirau, April Sefcik and Fran Haskins for allowing me to acquire stock.

What are your biggest challenges in breeding JW? Initially it was difficult to find quality stock. I needed to purchase “part” animals and put them together in hopes of creating a “whole” animal. It was difficult. I guess my greatest challenge has been creating an animal with balance. It is hard to get animal that has depth and width. If they have depth, they tend to be narrow. If they have width, they tend to lack depth. Animals with a proper front assembly tend to lack hindquarter and animals with strong hind ends with wide rears tend to lack proper front assembly. When I started breeding, I decided to breed solely for body type. Now, I am working on the details. Before you paint it, you need to focus a building the house. I will always have work to do. That’s the fun. We always have something to work on. Being a dwarf breed, I try to always keep some brood does. They have more babies and do not produce peanuts. It’s disheartening to have an entire litter of peanuts. We have all experienced that! My advice to newcomers: buy quality brood does. They are worth their weight in gold. What are your biggest challenges in caring for JW? I hate having to clean the wool off the cages. While I love the look of wool breeds, it is not fun to have to clean the wool off the cage bars. Even more distressing is the amount of wool on my own clothing. Clean cages are a must. If you want your animals to stay clean, you need to keep their cages clean. While I am cleaning, I let the rabbits play in exercise pens. My opinion- it is not fun to live your life in a cage. Let them out to stretch and play. It is also a good place to watch and evaluate your stock. Hay is important. Mine free feed on hay all day long. If they run out, I give them another handful. It prevents boredom and wool block. Still, it is not fun to clean up hay off the floor every day. I have yet to find a way to provide hay that is not somewhat messy. What are your biggest challenges in showing JW? The grooming and conditioning takes time. While there T h e
F l u f f

are a few judges that might mistake a matted mess for having more density, most judges appreciate a clean, wellgroomed animal. While the SOP strives for an easy-care wool quality, they still need to be groomed and kept clean. There is NOTHING more bothersome to me than a dirty rabbit. In the beginning, I groomed too aggressively. It takes time. If you want to maintain density, you can’t just rip through a coat with a vengeance. Be gentle. Gentle. Another challenge might be learning when to listen to judge’s commentary and when to stop listening. Most of the time, I do my best to listen to the remarks from judges. They can be so very helpful. Still, do not assume one opinion matters enough to change your opinion. Collectively analyze remarks about your stock and make appropriate decisions based on the remarks of the judges you respect. When I see a judge FORCE a Wooly like an accordion into a pose, it turns me off. The breed does not need to be manhandled into a pose. When I watch a Wooly with a proper head mount posed like a Florida White, it bothers me. The breed should have a naturally high headset with a SLIGHT rise to the topline. Let Webster’s do the job. Read the definition of slight. The AFL has a medium head mount. Our breed has a high head mount. What are your goals in your rabbitry? It’s always something! We will spend a lifetime robbing Peter to pay Paul. The thrill is the ideal. We might come close; we will never create it. All animals are flawed. Lately, I have been working on ears. My ears needed work. We all see it a bit differently. I have never liked extremes. Exaggeration is cartoon-like. I guess my eye/hand will always lean towards balance. What are you most proud of in your breeding accomplishments? F a l l

I am very proud of the success the CR Woolies! Hearing judges compliment their type brings about a smile. We work so hard in the barn and it is always nice to hear folk celebrate your efforts. My 2018 ARBA Convention Best of Breed winner (GC CR White On Rice) was a first-generation CR Wooly. From a very young age, I knew he was special. Sometimes, you just get lucky! He was from an outcross breeding. That makes me proud. I didn’t simply buy a trio of related rabbits and breed along similar lines as their breeder. I had to work hard to find breedings that would click and keep the right animals. Rice carried on with many wins, including the 2018-19 ROTY, GC CR Snow Bunny. Winning 11 BIS awards and a Group win at PaSRBA, she certainly made her mark in Wooly history. One of my favorite wins was having Snow Bunny recognized for back to back BIS wins and then hearing the BIS Youth winner was another CR Wooly we had given to a Youth breeder. Currently, Snow Bunny has five babies in the nestbox and Rice’s BIS winning Squirrel daughter has a litter of three. Now, the entire barn has Rice in their pedigrees. He was the game changer. One little white rabbit is responsible for so much success. I got lucky.
The people. I love our local crew. We all enjoy one another. I most enjoy going over the animals and talking with fellow breeders about the breed. You can be certain when Julie Aversa shows up at a rabbit show, we are going to put our hands on a lot of animals and dissect them part by part. It is really enjoyable to spend the day learning with my peers. The hobby has some of the brightest breeders! I have been blessed to know so many brilliant folks in dogs and rabbits. Do you have any special projects in the barn? Not at present time. I have really cut back on my numbers. I did see a picture of a little BEW boy on Sandra Wight’s Facebook page and smile. Hint. Hint. Do you raise any other breeds? Only Woolies! Favorite rabbit memory? Honestly, any time you hang out with our local Wooly crew, you have a new favorite memory. We surely know how to enjoy ourselves. Find a tribe. It will make you want to attend and participate.
What is your favorite part of the hobby?
