President Cheryl Loesch momdeplume@comcast.net

This year’s Convention was the 35th Anniversary of the Jersey Wooly breed and our club. The judges were selected because they are wonderful judges but also because each of them has a connection to the breed and the club. I thank Ramie Grissom, Steven Buell, and Ellis Wojcik for judging for us this year, and for selecting beautiful representatives of our breed from both Open and Youth. These rabbits, Madelyn Deselm’s Broken Sr. Buck in Open, and Cody Landis’s Broken Sr. Buck in Youth, were each chosen as Group winners during the Best in Show competition. What a wonderful accomplishment for the breeders, the breed, and the club to have two group winners coincide with our 35th Anniversary and ARBA’s 100th! Congratulations on your outstanding woolies, Madelyn and Cody! As we head into winter, I know everyone is preparing their barns for the season. We have finished the bulk of the fall show season in the north, and some big shows are coming up soon for parts of the west and south. For me, the post-Convention, prewinter timeframe is a great time to contemplate breedings and plans for the coming year. As a part of your planning, I encourage you to plan breedings for next year’s Convention, as well as those potential donations to the Golden Fleece Auction. For the GFA, we invite breeders who have a high rank in Herdsman and Award of Excellence to donate to our 50/50 auction for the club. We also have a process for those who may not be asked to donate to apply to donate a rabbit. This year we accepted three application rabbits to the GFA. I have much gratitude to express, and I’ll start with those who donated to our GFA, the Raffle Trio, and our new category for the Auction, the rabbits open for youth-only bids. Each of the breeders who donated a rabbit were generous in choosing a rabbit of high quality for the auction and trio. Choosing a rabbit is always difficult. You want to choose a rabbit of a quality that represents your herd, one you are proud to donate, and I’m happy to say that we had many such rabbits this year. I extend a heartfelt thank you to each of you who donated! I am also grateful for the many folks who bid on and purchased rabbits. Your generosity to the club is appreciated, and we know that you’ve received nice animals from our donors. A special thank you goes to the Trio donors and the Youth Scholarship rabbit donors, who give 100% of the profit to the club for the Youth Scholarship fund. The names of all donors and all purchasers are listed following this article, along with information on how much we made on each rabbit, and the Trio. Thank you all so much! 3

President’s article continued. . . While we are on the subject of the GFA, I would like to thank everyone who made the event happen, starting with Michelle Landis and her small auction committee. Michelle did a marvelous job reaching out to donors for commitments on rabbits for the auction. Her job does not stop there however, she also worked hard to help organize the auction at convention and to make sure we had all the paperwork we needed. Thank you to Ellis Wojcik, for going over all animals for DQs. Thank you also to the crew who helped out with the auction itself: Michelle, Julie Aversa, Alex Williams, Brenda Kneir, Chris Byers, Bill Medo, and of course, our auctioneer, Brenda Reilly. Thank you all for the many tasks you took on to make this auction run smoothly! Thank you to Izzy Bukovich for taking on the pre-convention task of soliciting donors to help support our Convention awards. Thank you to everyone who donated! The list of award donors follows this article. We are grateful to everyone who donates toward awards. The monies you donate are used toward all convention show awards, though it does not cover the entire cost. Donors’ names are listed on the category the donor requests as our appreciation to you. Thank you so much for your support! Thank you to Alex Williams, who capably handled commission of all Convention show awards, 1st3rd place awards, and Sweepstakes awards this year. Alex strove to have a variety of items for awards. Thank you also to our many booth helpers who handed out awards as people came to collect them, answered questions, and sold trio tickets. It takes many people to staff the booth during the Convention. Thank you to each of you who took time to do so. nd again, thanks to Alex for finding the many volunteers to do that! Our booth this year was designed as a celebration of ARBA’s 100th anniversary and the 35th anniversary of our breed and club. A huge thank you to Julie Aversa for booth décor, setup, and hospitality. Julie spent the six months prior to convention making all of the clever containers used for the daily hospitality items, which we hope you found the time to enjoy. Julie organized and gathered donations toward booth hospitality and those funds purchased the many treats and drinks that were available at the booth, as well as our judge’s gifts and drinks. Boutique items - apparel, blankets and cups - were designed by Victory Pass. We thank them for working so efficiently to get the items delivered via USPS and then to the convention booth. Thank you to Alex Williams for planning our banquet and locating a charming cottage and caterer for the event. We had a wonderful turn-out - thank you to all 80 of you who attended! We hope you enjoyed the dinner and the time to socialize. Thank you to Julie Aversa for organizing the Silent Auction donations, and setting up the auction. Everyone seemed to enjoy bidding on the items, and we thank you for your donations and participation. he silent auction made $1275.00. Thank you to all of our Convention show help: Brenda Reilly who acted as our show super, and who did some troubleshooting during the show; our ramrods, Lori Robasciotti, Connie Forward, and Brenda Kneir; our writers, Julie Aversa, Nicole Schmitt, and Michelle Landis; our table clerk and control sheet writer, Alex Williams; and of course, a huge thank you to all of the people who ran rabbits to the table and back to the coops. Without all of you we do not have a show. I’d like to again single out Helen McKie and Deidre Edder, who were the first, and most consistent runners we had throughout the day. You have been strong supporters of the club and the breed for many years, and we so appreciate you both! And, a special thank you to Amber Henderson, who was our show candids photographer. Thank you to all of you - as you can see it takes many, many volunteers to get everything done at convention, and I have not mention every single one of the tasks that is undertaken for this event. For that reason, I know there are folks I have not mentioned by name, but please know that I truly appreciate every single act of kindness and every bit of help you undertake for the club. A huge thank you to our board members. If you’ve made it through this report, you’ve seen that the board takes on a huge amount of the work for convention. The board has my gratitude every day.

2023 Trio Raffle

Raffle Winner Pason Fox My name is Pason Fox owner of Ginger Bunnies Rabbitry. I am 13 years old and the winner of the trio. A huge thank you to the donators of each of these three beautiful rabbits: Julie and Lindsay Aversa, Cheryl Loesch and Lori Garsow, and Christy Przybylowski. Also, an extra big thank you to Julie Aversa for hauling them home for me. When my Mom asked me if I wanted to buy raffle tickets and I said yes and bought a few, I never thought I would be the winner. I was so shocked I did not know what to say when she told me I won, except for “ I won all 3?” I am going to need more cages and a bigger barn. I can’t believe I won. I started with only one Jersey Wooly about three years ago, showing her at local fair and last year. I started showing in ARBA shows and started breeding Jersey Woolies. I have been learning so much and the Jersey Wooly community has been so welcoming and helpful. There have been some bumps along the way, but I am learning from those also. This trio will be a big start on the new lines of breeding that I am planning to do to grow my Ginger Bunnies Rabbitry lines. The raffle opportunity is so amazing, I hope you continue it so I can be a donor in the future, to bless someone the way I was blessed. Thank you.

Secretary Alex Williams NJWRCsecretary@gmail.com zcharmed@msn.com Hello fellow Wooly friends! I hope this issue of the Fluff finds you well and nest boxes full to the brim. 2023 Convention is but a memory now and 2024 Convention will be here before we know it. The theme for next year will be The Greatest Show Of The Century! I am extremely hyped for it. This year was my first year with helping with the planning, preparing, and actual execution of running the events and the Breed Club booth this year. Whew! I’m tired just thinking of it! Though I must admit I enjoyed every single moment of it. However, it did make me realize how much time and work goes into it. From picking the judges to having a banquet, the list of details is IMMENSE and so very important. I have come to learn it cannot be a one-man band Though I like to think I can do everything on my own without help, I have come to the realization that we need help. Not just me but those of us who are expected to plan, organize and run the booth, banquet, awards, and even the GFA. We NEED you, the members, to help! Sure, we can do it, but it would be a more enjoyable experience for all if we had volunteers to share it all with. You may be wondering how you could help, and let me tell you, there are many ways of helping your club run a successful show, from volunteering to sit at the booth so others can have a moment or two to walk around to look at the other breeds, to running rabbits on judgement day. (LOL) There is also setting up the booth, tearing down the booth, helping with the banquet, to just about anything that involves a successful show. A successful show is a fun show for not only one or two people but everyone. So, with that being said I will leave you here with a paraphrased quote by JFK, ‘Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club’. I hope to hear from you and please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions See you at Nationals in Louisiana!

Vice President Doug Brown doug.brown1982db@gmail.com

Members of the NJWRC: As I write this article, all the excitement from the convention has ended for another year, and I hope everyone can be preparing for next year's convention. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend this year due to some health concerns in our family, but I heard nothing but great experiences, which is very nice to hear. The number of people I heard stepped up to help where they could was excellent as usual, not that I would have expected any less from you guys. The members of this club, from my experience, are some of the most remarkable people I have had the opportunity to work with. I hope you guys find the amount of enjoyment and fun with this club as a whole that I have over my years of raising Woolies. A big thank you needs to go out to all the members, as when help is required in any fashion, we never have a problem finding people to volunteer to do that. With our unpredictable weather this year, at least where I am from, I hope it finds you all well with your breeding and showing. Until next time, may you guys have good luck, and may your nest boxes be full of beauties. Yours Truly, Doug

District One Bethany Robertson bethanyrobertsongm@gmail.com Representing: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington, Wyoming, Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC, Yukon Territory, and Japan Hello District One Members! I am happy to report that we have had an increase in breeders and interest in joining the NJWRC in Oregon. From the few local shows I have been able to attend and seeing posts online, it looks like our fellow Jersey Wooly breeders have provided some beautiful animals to new breeders. It is wonderful to see new faces that are proud of their purchases and excited to start showing. It can be difficult at times to find mentors or breeders that are willing to part with high quality animals, but I have been so impressed by the generosity of our club members, from the animals I’ve seen these new breeders start with, to the donations in the Golden Fleece Auction at National Convention. Way to go Jersey Wooly breeders!

District Two Lori Robasciotti dogznkidz@hotmail.com Representing: Arizona, California, Hawai’i, Nevada, Utah, and Mexico I hope this report finds everyone happy and well post both 2023 Convention and Thanksgiving. Now, to gear up for Christmas and the New Year. This year at Convention we had five District 2 members exhibit their Jersey Woolies in Louisville. Our district members had great results; we might be few but are mighty! Michaeline McConnell flew in from California with her four Woolies. Angela Holbrook drove in from Utah with her two and four legged crew. Then, myself, Amber Henderson and Carla Morrison, plus my Dwarf breeder friend, drove the 2,200 miles from central California. This was Angela's first time exhibiting at Convention. Her Sr. AOV buck placed 5th and her Sr. AOV doe was 8th place. Michaeline also placed very strongly in the Sr. AOV buck class with both 2nd and 4th. Carla, who was also a first time Convention exhibitor, took home 14th place with her shaded Sr. doe. Amber placed 3rd in a huge colored wool class with her one and only entry, her broken Sr. buck. I cut down from last year’s entry of 31 to only 9 this year. I was blessed to place 3rd through 5th in the AOV Sr doe class, 3rd in the Shaded Sr buck class, and 1st in the Shaded Sr doe class. My Shaded doe went on to win BOS! On our 2,200 mile return trip, we were already planning how to pack more efficiently next year to allow for more room for rabbits. Of course, we also were planning future breedings to hopefully produce next years winners. But now we're back at square one and working toward the next local show. Take care and Merry Christmas, many blessings to you all. Lori

Fun from District 2!

District Four Michael Wolfe 2002michaelwolfe@gmail.com Representing: Arkansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas Hopefully everyone in our district is recovering well from the 100th ARBA convention. I know our rabbits are finally coming into that Convention prime a few weeks later, but that just means our animals are going to be that much stronger for the fall show season. We have seen an increase in our youth exhibitors. Please keep in mind that our new youth exhibitors may need some guidance. Remember everyone must start somewhere, so be sure to share the tidbits of information that helped you when you started out in Jersey Woolies. One thing I have noticed in our hobby is we have lost some things like show etiquette. I genuinely believe this loss of “show etiquette” is due to the large increase in exhibitors. The best way for us to help teach it is for the more experienced showman to continually practice it. You may be finding yourself asking what is show etiquette? Here is a list of the following practices I would consider to be good show etiquette. 1. Make sure to remain a reasonable distance from the show table after you put you animal up to be judged, unless you are asked by the judge to step closer. This helps ensure that the judge can focus on all our animals without distractions. Some exhibitors may say “I can’t hear judge when I am further away.” That situation can be rectified by asking the judge about the comments they made on your animal when the breed judging is complete. 2. Be polite to all exhibitors you show with whether you win or lose. 3. When you approach a judge after the breed judging is complete remain polite. You may agree, or disagree with their assessment, but there is no need to argue with them. Remember judges are the backbone of our hobby, and we would not have it without them. 4. Stack your carriers when you are finished getting animals out of them or putting animals into them. This to help condense space when you are at the judging table. The more space means the more room there is for you and your fellow exhibitors to hear comments and placings. 5. Please thank the judge for judging when judging is complete. Remember they took the time out of their schedule to evaluate your animals. 6. Always ask the judge if it is O.K. to videotape, or record judging if you wish to do so. While most judges maybe O.K. with being recorded, some may not. It is just a common courtesy that we should extend to our judges. 7. Keep your language clean. We do have young impressionable youth around us sometimes. 8. Youth exhibitors help each other learn. Our breed’s greatest resource of knowledge is ourselves. If you do not understand a term or topic, ask questions to those around you. Most exhibitors are willing to help and teach you take advantage of that resource. Nationals is fast approaching in February. Our coats should be in prime by then. Let’s not forget the little things that can destroy a coat. In my experience all wool breeds are extremely susceptible to felting, and matting when moisture is introduced to them. A good way to prevent moisture from tarnishing our coats is to blow our animals out once a week to keep that wool dry and matt free. If you need to remove a matt before a show, try not to pull it out. You should try to gently work it apart when blowing your animals coat out. Kathy Moerbe has a neat little trick for matts that can’t be worked out. I have seen Kathy use a seam splitter/seam ripper (sewing tool) to be able to precisely remove the matt without pulling other fibers out around it. 12

Districe 4 article continued. . . Our show venue for this year’s nationals in Louisiana is on a packed red dirt floor. If you have animals with white coats, I will strongly encourage you to bring a small tarp to set your animals on as a precaution. As for our new membership in our district, I would like to issue a word of caution when buying animals based on a photograph you have seen of them. I often see new exhibitors somewhat disappointed in an animal they purchased off a photograph, due to the animal not having the traits they thought it presented in the picture. As a breeder I can honestly say photographs do not tend to do the animals any justice, whether that be good or bad. Certain traits such as bone, and texture is almost impossible to assess from a photograph. Breeders also have different opinions about certain traits, so your definition of one trait may not be the same as that breeder. Ask to put your hands on the animal when you pick it up, most breeders will not take issue with this. You may see breeders ask for a deposit, or payment to hold the animal; this is acceptable as it protects the buyer from losing to other potential buyers. I will see everyone at the national show in February, and I hope to see people before then at other shows. We have a very large district which makes it almost impossible for me to be in every state throughout the year. If any exhibitors have questions about anything rabbit-related, please feel free to contact me. Send me an email to toptierfarms2012@gmail.com with the question.

Hello District 5! It was great to see several of you attend the 100th ARBA Convention. It was the first convention for some of you! It’s really nice to see our district growing! This is the largest amount of youth we have had since I have been director. I love it! For those that are not aware, we have a great new Speciality Club in our district. The Sunflower Jersey Wooly Club is chartered in Kansas and serves Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Nebraska! They will be hosting our 2025 Jersey Wooly Nationals! Club President, Melissa Tillery, and her daughter, Haley, are working hard to promote our breed in their area. I encourage everyone to attend as many of their shows as possible. Speaking of breed Nationals! I know several of you have mentioned wanting to attend in 2024. Carson, Kainen, and I plan on being there. I have attended shows with the host club and they put on a great show! So I hope to see all of you in West Monroe, Louisiana Feb. 16th & 17th. I have been getting a lot of pics, especially from our youth! I love it; keep them coming! I am always available to answer any questions or concerns or discuss any ideas you have. I love hearing from all of you. My email is mobunniesrabbitry@yahoo.com.

District Eight Julie Aversa jtaversa@gmal.com Representing: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Manitoba, and Ontario Well, what a great convention. To see both open and youth groups go to a Jersey Wooly was absolutely awesome. Congratulations to everyone for attending the 100th ARBA celebration and 35th Anniversary of the Jersey Wooly. I hope everyone enjoyed this year and is looking forward to next year in Kentucky. We did something new this year and had 3 auction rabbits that were for Youth only. I think this was received well, and we look forward to continuing this next year. We are looking for three nice rabbits for next year. If you are interested in donating to this cause, please contact Lindsay Aversa. The youth are the future of our hobby. A lot of questions were brought up and it was suggested that we have an article explaining ARBA, NJWRC and specialty clubs. ARBA - we obtain a membership with the American Rabbit Breeders Association. For that membership you receive the Domestic Rabbit Magazine, and when you sign up you receive a digital copy of the official guidebook: Raising Better Rabbits and Cavies. All all-breed shows have to pay sanctions to ARBA to be able to hold a show. The organization today maintains modern coops and equipment for use at the national convention shows and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Research and Development Fund which contributes to research benefiting rabbits and cavies alike. The ARBA boasts a growing contingent of youth members who have the opportunity to participate in ARBA shows and character-building youth activities. They also have the opportunity to qualify for youth scholarship funds made available by the ARBA. The ARBA encourages youth rabbit and cavy showmanship and related activities as a means to demonstrate not only a working and practical knowledge of rabbits and cavies, but to encourage youth members to explore critical thinking skills. These are desirable values youth learn and experience through their involvement in the ARBA. Character-building values, such as responsibility and sportsmanship, will benefit youth throughout their lives. Only ARBA members can register individual rabbits or cavies. You can also obtain a Certificate of Grand Champion. All Breed Clubs - hold shows in their respective areas. They pay sanctions to both ARBA and the Breed Specialty Clubs. They run the entire show and must have their own, borrowed or rented, equipment. They also issue the legs that are earned in the show to the exhibitors. An All Breed Club bids to host our National Convention each year. So ARBA in essence owns the show, and the all breed club hosts the show. They are responsible for the picking the place, all paperwork, which includes the legs issued for the show, and the set up and take down of the couping. National Jersey Wooly Rabbit Club - You receive our publication, The Fluff, and are entered in the sweepstakes. Each National Specialty Club is geared toward promotion of the breed or breeds it represents. Each organization encourages breeders to breed and exhibit quality animals fully representative of the breed’s unique characteristics. In addition to the ARBA’s annual National Convention, each national specialty holds a national breed show typically held during the spring months. The National Club in essence owns the show and the specialty club is the host of our Nationals. Another great aspect of the National club is that you have Sweepstakes. If you want a further explanation of what sweeps entail, please visit our webpage at NJWRCsweeps.com. There is a great page with the explanation of all the categories found there. 17

District 8 article continued. . . Regional Specialty Clubs - Clubs that put on additional specialty shows at an all breed club show, usually a state or a region, is covered by these clubs. Anyone can attend these shows. These clubs can hold shows and have raffle tables to raise monies to host Nationals. The specialty club is responsible for running the National show, picking the location, obtaining prizes, hiring judges, issuing show reports, and respective legs earned. They are also responsible for our annual banquet to be held in conjunction with our National show. The National club does give the specialty club a stipend to help bring in a judge that is outside their area. So, simplified, ARBA issues a membership and has yearly dues, issues registrations, and Grand Championships. Owns the Convention show. Digitally publishes the magazine Domestic Rabbit. The National Club issues a membership and has yearly dues, has sweepstakes program. Owns the National Show. Digitally publishes the magazine, The Fluff, quarterly. Runs the Jersey Wooly show at Convention. Specialty clubs usually have a membership fee, runs specialty shows and issues show reports and issues legs earned. Can be the host of the National Show. An All Breed Club Runs shows, issues show reports and earned legs. You can join your local all breed club and help out. They can always use the help. If you still have questions about the above or anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me. Hope your nestboxes are full. Julie Aversa District 8 Representative

I was very blessed to get to write for Steven Buell, the Youth Jersey Wooly judge, at convention this year. It gave me a front row seat for all of the absolutely amazing youth Jersey Woolies that crossed the table in Louisville this year. Let me tell you, I was drooling over quite a few of them! The youth should be very proud of themselves for producing such incredible rabbits. I am excited to see how many D9 rabbits placed in the Top 10 of their classes at convention, with Rachael Walkup winning Youth BOSG AOV with her Pointed SR Buck! Christy and Kat Przybylowski won Open BOSG Broken with their Broken SR Doe and Open BOSG Tan with their Tan SR Buck! It was so exciting getting to cheer everyone on! Don’t forget, if you won BOB or BOSB at convention this year, I will be contacting you towards the end of next summer about donating a gorgeous JW to our Golden Fleece Auction and/or JW Trio. Keep me in mind as you breed those beautiful JWs over the next couple of months. I hope to see many of you at Jersey Wooly Nationals in February in West Monroe, LA. I am so looking forward to leaving cold PA in the dead of winter in Feb and heading to WARM Louisiana! Bonus is that we will get to see lots of our bunny family while we are there. If there are any D9 & D7 youth that would like us to take and show a few Jersey Woolies at Nationals for them, please let us know. We would love to do that for you. I know that it is hard to take off school at that time of the year to attend Nationals. We would love to have a huge group of awesome Youth JWs at Nationals in Feb!! 2023 ARBA Convention Open Jersey Wooly Best of Breed and Best of Group Madelyn DeSelm When I first started breeding and showing rabbits, winning Best of Breed at convention was only a dream. It’s hard to believe that finally my dream has become a reality for me and my favorite rabbit, Barnwood's Link. I am very grateful for all the support I have had along the way and for all the wonderful friends I have met during this journey. Without the help and encouragement from other breeders, I wouldn’t have achieved this. Ever since Link popped his head out of the nestbox, he has been a barn favorite. I stuck with him all throughout his baby stage, knowing he would be an amazing rabbit. He has achieved so many things, and I couldn’t be happier for him. Barnwood's Link is out of many different lines, including Vera, Allstar, and Baby Blue. His mother is Barnwood's 21, and his father is Hot Shots Savvy. Not only did Link achieve my biggest goal, but he also surpassed my expectations by earning Best of Group Four. Getting so far at the 100th ARBA Convention has to be one of the most memorable moments of my life. I am so proud of Link, and I am excited to continue to show and breed more Jersey Woolies.

2023 ARBA Convention Open Jersey Wooly Best Opposite Sex Lori Robasciotti 2023 ARBA Convention in Louisville Kentucky will not be a show I will soon forget! Of the 9 Woolies I brought to show, TM's Ciroc, my Shaded Sr doe, was the one I had the greatest hope for doing well. I actually love this doe and think she is the best Jersey I have ever bred. I am my own worst enemy and for me to say that about her is huge. Ciroc is a full sister (younger litter) to my pointed doe, TM's Champagne, who was AOV BOG last year in Reno. Their sire, TM's Yahtzee, was Shaded BOG at the last California JW Nationals and was Shaded BOSG in Reno as well. Just like her sister, Champagne, Ciroc was a standout in the nest box and as a junior. She only made it on the table once before Convention and really did nothing. That didn't bother me though, I knew she was good and would only get better. Of course, she did have to blow a huge molt right before Convention; that did concern me. I entered anyway and just crossed my fingers. I guess it worked LOL. The honor of winning BOS at Convention is even more meaningful to me since the rabbits have been second priority for me this year. After Reno last year I made the decision to focus on my dog and try to get her championship finished. I didn't do any breeding and when I tried to bring the does back, all I had were dead litters. Hopefully things will begin to improve now. Congratulations to all the beautiful winners at Convention, especially Madelyn DeSelm on her BOB and Best od Group 4! Lori Robasciotti

The meeting was called to order at 8:05 a.m. The President welcomed all present, and thanked Deidre Edder and Helen McKie for being the first to volunteer to run rabbits for the show, and for persevering all day at the job. • Treasurer’s report. Brenda Reilly passed out copies of the budget and expense report for Fiscal Year 2022-23, which will be printed in the next edition of the FLUFF. • Election results Cheryl Loesch reported the results of the election, and introduced Connie Forward as our newest director for District 7. Report of officers: • President’s report - Cheryl offered a short report of some of the many items of interest over the past year, including a new editor for the FLUFF, various updates to the website, and ongoing work by the club Standards Committee. Secretary’s report - Alex offered an update on the membership, which has increased from about 300 to 325 over the past year. Report of committees. • Judge’s Committee - A judges committee was appointed with the aim of having a group to collect recommendations from the membership, review those, and send out bids to judges for future Conventions. • Guidebook - Cheryl reported on behalf of the Guidebook Committee chair, who was not present. An electronic version of the guidebook, which is not yet fully formatted, was posted on the website. The aim was to get the information out to membership quickly. A person will be sought to format the guidebook in an editable format, so that future editions can be updated with ease. • Standards - Cheryl reported that the Standards Committee continues its work, and hopes to have a ballot out to the membership in early Spring. Old Business: • NJWRC Members Group on FB - The members-only group on Facebook is there for all members to use for discussion. • Youth Scholarship Funding - The Youth Scholarship has been funded by donations of rabbits to the GFA for which the owners give 100% of proceeds to the Youth Scholarship. The Club does supplement Youth Scholarships in years when the amount raised in this way is not enough to cover the two $1000.00 scholarships given out. Recently, the Board voted to give 100% of the Trio Rabbit Raffle proceeds to the Youth Scholarship Fund.

37

NJWRC Membership Meeting Minutes continued. . . • GFA Selection process - A brief overview of the GFA selection criteria was given. The GFA is an invitation-only auction, in which invites are tendered to top sweeps earners in Herdsman and Award of Excellence, two areas of Sweepstakes which measure depth of quality in a herd, and most BOB/BOS wins respectively. This is the 2nd year in which we have offered the option for those who may not otherwise be asked to donate to apply to donate a rabbit. Last year we had one application rabbit; this year we had three. New Business • ARBA Library Items - An appeal was made to membership to donate items which might be sent for display at the ARBA Library. At present, we have only our business card on display. • Committee volunteers - A call was made for those who wish to volunteer for committees, or in some other capacity, to give their names and interest to any board member. Questions There was a brief period open for questions from the membership; there were some regarding volunteer opportunities, the GFA process, and on the Treasurer’s report. Amber Henderson volunteered to organize some education seminars at Convention next year. The meeting adjourned at 9:10 a.m.

NJWRC Board Meeting Minutes Saturday October 7, 2023 Meeting called to order 11:30am Roll Call of board members present: Cheryl Loesch, President; Brenda Reilly, Treasurer; Alex Williams, Secretary. District representatives: Julie Aversa, Brenda Kneir, Michelle Landis, Lori Robasciotti. A quorum of 7 board members were present, allowing votes to go forward. The club has kept a tradition of sending out ballots even though we have this provision in the CBL. Very few ballots are returned when there is an uncontested slate of candidates up for election. The recommendation was to declare uncontested slates elected, in accordance with CBL in order to save on postage. Election results: Total received within postmarked deadline: 42, 1 envelope received postmarked too late and was not opened. • President ballots (Cheryl Loesch) total: 42 votes • D7 (Connie Forward): 3 votes. Secretary report: Over the past year, we have grown from 302 members to 325 members. The Secretary recommends a membership contest wherein youth compete to bring in the most new youth members. Sweepstakes Nicole Schmitt njwrcsweeps@gmail.com www.njwrcsweeps.com

Hello NJWRC members! I had such a great time in Kentucky this year & it was fantastic to see all my Wooly Peeps! Congratulations to all the winners! And applause to all the members who stepped up working behind the tables & running rabbits! I know running wasn’t an easy task this year with some ‘cooping whoopsies’ happening. I love the open & youth being together – but I know it caused some confusion. Great job to everyone! I hope by the time you’re reading this we’ll have PayPal for sanctions – it’s in the works now. I’ll post on the Facebook page and the sweeps website when we’re ready to roll with it. The points in this Fluff are show dates from July through October for which reports were received prior to 11/10/2023. As always, look carefully! Contact me ASAP by email or phone if anything seems amiss. We have lots of new members, which is fantastic! So, let’s review some of the basics! *Please read my articles, LOL! *Please watch your reports, particularly those that weren’t done with Easy2Show (I worry less about Easy2Show because the vast majority of you are typing in information yourselves!). Show secretaries, much like the rest of us, aren’t infallible. Things happen! Watch your reports for accuracy – the information reported to me is the same information reported to you. If your personal show report has some sort of error, then mine does, too. Let’s not wait until the last minute to report problems. *Please utilize the sweepstakes website! (www.njwrcsweeps.com) It’s great for not only keeping tabs on sanctions, but also reports that have been received (and, more concerning, *not* received!). There’s also an article on the site: ‘Sweeps for Dummies’ that outlines how all the NJWRC contests work. There is also points there sorted by exhibitor! *Partnerships – all exhibitors appearing on the entry must be NJWRC members in good standing to receive any points. If you’re teamed up with someone, stay in touch with them regarding their membership status! *The NJWRC allows for an official 60-day grace period on memberships (which is very generous!). But after 60 days, it’s nada – so don’t let yourself lapse! I think that’s all for now – I know this issue is JAMPACKED with exciting convention results, so I’ll allow you to focus on those! Till next time! -Nicole

This column memorializes those club members and former members who have recently passed. We will run this column in the Winter issue each year. We rely upon, and thank you, for submissions for this column. Please give us the name, date of loss, and a couple of sentences about the individual if you can. In this first year of memorials, we remember those who have passed in 2022, and 2023. All of these folks were friends, wooly enthusiasts, and club supporters. •

Carla Hartman died May 5, 2022. Carla, whose Ohio rabbbitry was originally the Queen of Hearts and then Hartman’s Hutches, was one of the original breeders in her state to promote the Wooly. She was known for beautiful shake-and-show coats on her animals.

Lisa Smith died May 7, 2022. Lisa was President of the NJWRC from 1996-1998.

Melody Whicher Goff died September 10, 2022.

• Brian Caudill passed away December 16, 2022. Brian was a longtime club member who served on our board, and was inducted into our Hall of Fame. He raised Woolies for many years, and had many Nationals and Convention winners. • Dennis Alsup died on March 13, 2023. Dennis was the club’s Sweeps chair for two years. Dennis was known for his kindness and good nature.

• Cindy Coy died August 3, 2023. Cindy was known for her exceptional REWs. She was al ways willing to stop and help anyone who needed it.

Hello Jersey Wooly Friends! To all who made the pilgrimage to Louisville for the 100th ARBA Convention, I hope you had a marvelous time! If you were unable to attend this year, maybe 2024 is your year as ARBA returns to Louisville once again. Due to some circumstances beyond my control. . .a nasty virus that landed me in the ER. . .my planned weekend trip to Louisville was just one day, but it was SHOW DAY, so that was a plus. I made some mad tracks while I was there! I met several of the NJWRC Officers/Directors, took pictures for the AMLRC Gazette, and manned the Mini Lop booth during the show. Convention seemed to be the gift that kept on giving. . .I tested positive for Covid about a week later. OY! I’m tired of being sick! Congratulations to the JW winners at Convention! What a feat to have both the open and the youth JW win their respective groups for Best in Show!! AH-mazing!! Enjoy re-living all things Convention here in The Fluff! The National Jersey Wooly show will be here soon, February 17, 2024, in West Monroe LA. Don’t put off making your plans to attend. Seriously. . .it will be here before you know it! To the 2024 graduating seniors, be sure to check out the NJWRC scholarship application in this edition of The Fluff. If you are pursuing a higher education, and you meet the scholarship qualifications, be sure to submit your scholarship application by April 1, 2024! I have NO idea how we are already at the end of 2023! Well, actually I do know. My husband and I have been consumed with building a house since the last week of July 2023. The days, weeks, and months have been measured in 2 x 4s, concrete, windows, siding, electrical, and plumbing! The exciting part. . .sometime in the first quarter or so of 2024, we’ll get to move in! WOO HOO! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Enjoy your time with family and friends and carry good energy into 2024! See you next year! Pam

A Matter of Ethics By Amber Henderson

“Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have a right to do and what is right to do.” - U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart (1915-1985)

I like that quote from the late Justice Stewart because it prompts me to consider the effects and motives of my actions. I have the right to make my own decisions though my decisions have consequences for myself and/or others, whether those be positive or negative consequences. I want to do what is right. I want to be fair, thoughtful of others (empathetic), and kind. In our rabbitries, during and after conducting animal sales, and in the showroom, we make decisions. That is our right. Our decisions can affect our animals or other people. Have we acted ethically or unethically? What is right? In a series of short articles focused on ethics-related topics, I hope to inspire contemplation, introspection, and spark positive discussions amongst exhibitors, parents and youth at home, at shows, and online, so that we may cultivate and integrate a culture of the strongest ethics into the sport of raising and showing our beloved Jersey Wooly rabbits. For now, I’ll leave you with a quote from a judge of a different court and pose a few questions: “You don’t teach morals and ethics and empathy and kindness in schools. You teach them at home, and kids learn by example.” - Judge Judy Sheindlin If kids learn by our examples, what have they learned from you about showmanship? Was it positive or negative? Ethical or unethical? Have you witnessed someone practicing good showmanship? How has their example affected you? I’d love to know your answers to the last two questions. I might even ask to use one or two of your responses in my next article. You can reach me via email at ambermom@gmail.com
