About the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra

The New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Resident Youth Orchestra of the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University, gives qualified middle- and high-school students—especially Black and Latino youth in the Greater Newark area—unparalleled opportunities to achieve personal and musical excellence. Weekly coaching by Symphony musicians and a supportive peer-to-peer environment provides quality learning and performing experiences and builds a unique culture of collaboration. The achievements of this program and its impact on the lives of these young musicians have received national recognition from the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

Youth Orchestra brings together students of all skill levels who share a passion for music. There are four sequential levels, creating a pathway for students to flourish and grow under the guidance of the Symphony’s expert faculty: Training Ensemble (including Preparatory Violins, Allegro, Maestro, and Wind Ensemble); String Ensemble; Repertory Orchestra; and Academy Orchestra. Students at all levels perform two feature concerts each year and also participate in masterclasses and workshops with renowned guest artists. In addition to great music making, benefits of the program include individualized instruction and musicianship training, volunteer opportunities, additional performance opportunities, and complimentary tickets to select Symphony concerts.

Youth Orchestra annually serves more than 200 students from 11 counties across northern and central New Jersey. Students who play orchestral instruments can apply for membership in the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra. For more information, visit njsymphony.org/youthorchestra.

About the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra Chamber Music opportunities for students include: Anne Lieberson Ensemble, a string quartet coached by Symphony violist Martin Andersen, named in honor of a devoted music lover, violinist and teacher; Academy Wind Quintet, under the direction of Symphony principal bassoonist Robert Wagner; and the Curtland E. Fields Ensemble, conducted by Terrence Thornhill, featuring students in the Training Ensemble and String Ensemble playing side-by-side with Peer Mentors and Symphony coaches.

Volunteers from Academy Orchestra, Repertory Orchestra and String Ensemble assist coaches and conductors in classes and rehearsals. Mentors are an integral part of the learning environment, and they receive community service credit for their volunteer hours. *** The Henry Lewis Concerto Competition was named in honor of the 2015 induction of former New Jersey Symphony Music Director Henry Lewis into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. Lewis broke racial barriers in the music world as the first African-American music director of a major American orchestra when he was appointed by the Symphony (1968-76). During his tenure, Lewis brought the Symphony into a new era of high-profile musical activity and community engagement. The Youth Orchestra continues Lewis’ legacy with this opportunity for members of Academy Orchestra. The 2024 winner, cellist Annamaria Witek , will perform as a featured soloist with the New Jersey Symphony in the 2024-25 season.

About the Artists Diego García, a multi-talented musician from Colombia, has established himself as a fierce advocate for music education and a reputation for cultivating young talent. As a conductor, cellist, and educator, he has collaborated with renowned institutions including The Juilliard School, Mannes School of Music, and the Eastman School of Music.

García is currently the Artistic Director of the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Music Director of Orchestras at the Dwight-Englewood School and the Thurnauer School of Music. This fall, García will be joining the Cello Faculty and serving as Guest Conductor at the NYU Steinhardt School of Music. He was most recently Lead String Director for Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard in Geneva, Switzerland. From 2019–2022, García was on the conducting faculty of the Mannes School of Music Pre-College Division. He previously held the position of Music Director of the Eastman Youth Chamber Soloists.

As a conductor, he has shared the stage with prominent artists such as Joshua Bell, Sharon Isbin, Anthony McGill, Philippe Quint, Julian Schwartz, Steven Masi and Naomi O’Connell. He has conducted and performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, The Kennedy Center, The Metropolitan Museum and Vienna’s Rathauseplatz Concert Series. García has made appearances with contemporary artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, Harry Connick Jr and Jennifer Lopez. His first album as cellist and arranger was praised by All About Jazz: “… García perform[s] intricate counterpoint that enhances the overall beauty of the whole without being obtrusive, also playing arresting lead parts.”

García is a frequent guest conductor at different festivals and workshops in the United States, South America, and Europe, including Parnu Symphony Orchestra (Estonia), Flanders Music Festival (Belgium), Hampton Roads Chamber Players and Bard College Philharmonic Orchestra. García has also served as Music Director of the Finger Lakes Symphony Orchestra (New York) for several seasons, where he organized ongoing collaborations with the Ithaca Ballet. An avid chamber musician, García was a founding member of a new music ensemble called “Gibbs & Main,” a group that regularly commissioned works from new composers and presented interactive children’s concerts in formal and community venues. García’s performances as soloist and chamber musician have been featured on NPR’s “Live from Hochstein”, WXXI-FM 91.5’s Backstage Pass, as well as broadcasts for Music for Montauk, the Eastman School of Music’s Washington Square Concert Series, and at the Spotlight Series, Keuka on the Lake. * * * Terrence Thornhill is the Associate Conductor & Curriculum Specialist for the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, working closely with Artistic Director Diego García. Thornhill also serves as the instrumental music director at Kent Place School in Summit. Thornhill earned his bachelor’s degree in music education at Montclair State University, studying cello with Nicholas Tzavaras, cellist of the Shanghai Quartet. He received his master’s degree in cello performance from SUNY Purchase College, studying cello with Julia Lichten, cellist of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He also studied conducting with Ken Lam, conductor of the Charleston Symphony and Illinois Symphony Orchestra.

As an educator, Thornhill maintains a diverse private cello studio in the New York metro area, teaching students from young children to adults. In addition to his private studio, he is the conductor of the Varsity Youth Orchestra, JCC String Camerata and Harambee Chamber Orchestra, which is dedicated to performing work by underrepresented composers, specifically composers of color and women, while raising money for community passion projects. Thornhill is an original teaching artist and lead conductor for the Paterson Music Project, an El Sistema program serving over 250 students in Paterson, and the lead conductor at the Opportunity Music Project,

which serves El Sistema students in New York City.

Thornhill’s credits include the inaugural John J. Cali School of Music Alumni Achievement Award in 2018. The same year, Thornhill was selected for the faculty at the Youth Orchestras of Los Angeles National El Sistema Festival sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. * * * Sue On is a conductor, violinist, and educator. Sue is currently the Artistic Director of the Lakeland Youth Symphony and the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra, the Artistic Director and conductor of the Rowan Youth Orchestra and the Rowan Youth String Orchestra at Rowan University’s Community Music School, conductor of the Repertory Orchestra with the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the concertmaster of the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra.

Sue is a guest conductor and clinician across the tri-state area and was recently invited to conduct both the North Jersey School Music Association Region 1 Intermediate Orchestra, the South Jersey Band and Orchestra Region 3 Intermediate Orchestra, and was a guest teaching artist at the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Jerusalem where she had an opportunity to be a guest conductor with the Palestinian Youth Orchestra.

Sue studied conducting with the New York Grand Opera’s founder and esteemed Juilliard professor, Vincent La Selva, and jazz violin with Grammy award-winning violinist, Scott Tixier. She is also a board member of the NJ Chapter of American String Teachers Association and most recently joined the advisory board for the Denville Arts Council. When Sue isn’t teaching or performing you can find her jigsaw puzzling, perfecting her macaron recipes, or binge-watching the latest tv shows. * * * A native of Westchester County, New York, violinist Naomi Youngstein attended the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division and later received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in violin performance from the school. As a student of Burton Kaplan, Youngstein won the school’s concerto competition and the Ravel Academie competition, for which she was awarded a trip to France to attend masterclasses at the Ravel Academie. While a student at the Manhattan School, she performed with the school’s orchestra (as concertmaster) and the Manhattan Contemporary Ensemble. Youngstein attended the National Repertory Orchestra festival for two seasons; in her second season with the ensemble, she was assistant concertmaster and performed a concerto with the orchestra.

Youngstein is assistant personnel manager of the New Jersey Symphony. She is a mentor and teacher in the New Jersey Symphony’s Coach-in-Residence Program, serves as leader of the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra’s String Ensemble and is a coach for the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Academy Orchestra.

She has taught at the Thurnauer School of Music of the Jewish Community Center in Tenafly and at Rutgers Prep School; she often coaches for the New Jersey Youth Symphony and has given workshops for several area highschool orchestras. For several years she was a chamber music coach and instrumental class leader at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) summer Chamber Music Institute at Rutgers University, and she is the former treasurer of ASTA NJ. She teaches violin privately at her home studio in West Orange, and she regularly sends students to Regions, All-State, ASTACAP and music camps.

Jonathan Villegas believes in the value of educating future generations of musicians and leaders, by creating music that can inspire and connect with local communities through the engagement of this art form and its intersectional potential.

As a conductor, cellist, actor, clinician, and educator, their mission is to continue transforming the world through all art forms by using our musical gifts to help cultivate lasting relationships that will develop opportunities to continue uplifting historically underserved communities.

Jonathan currently serves as the Assistant Artistic Director at D.C.’s Different Drummers in Washington, D.C, Wind Leader of the Training Ensemble with the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, Assistant Conductor to the Peabody Preparatory Wind Band, as well as the Wind Ensembles Director at Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program. Additionally, Jonathan serves as the new conductor for the Boston-based contemporary Pierrot ensemble, “Der Gestanke”. After having spent the last few years performing in Portland, Oregon as the Assistant Conductor to the Portland State University Orchestra, Bands & Opera, Jonathan now resides in Baltimore, Maryland, where he is pursuing a master’s in music in Wind Conducting at the Peabody Conservatory.

From the desire to be a well-informed and multi-faceted symphonic conductor, Jonathan hopes to use their expertise as a cellist, background as a teacher and clinician to youth string orchestras and concert bands, recent experience conducting multiple types of collegiate ensembles, along with their education at Peabody to expand their skillsets with the art of wind literature to enhance their conducting. Jonathan aims to share their diverse and dynamic background as a performer and educator, to continue to connect all aspects of music with one another, while being an ambitious and positive leader as a proud Latinx and queer performer.

He has many years of experience playing weddings and private events in addition to playing chamber and orchestral music. For many years he played violin in the New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra (NJIO) and served as one of its conductors. In addition to playing the violin, Davies is also a professional drummer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies from the University of Miami (Coral Gables, FL) and later earned his New Jersey teaching certificate from Jersey City State College. Davies taught instrumental and general music in the Bayonne School District for 24 years and is now retired from public school teaching. With the New Jersey Symphony Youth Orchestra, he oversees the beginner program as the Preparatory Violin Teaching Artist.

During this Relaxed Performance, we’ll take a deep dive into Beethoven’s “Eroica”–his breakout Third Symphony that broke all the rules and forged a new future for the symphonic form. Inspired by Leonard Bernstein’s masterful way of putting young audiences at the center of music-making, this interactive concert will feature inside tips, listening cues and fun facts that make for the perfect Saturday afternoon family outing! We encourage you and your families to bring your own sensory manipulatives, noise reduction headphones and other necessary tools that will allow you to react and enjoy the music in a way that is most natural for you.
