MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO Welcome to the New Jersey Symphony’s 2022 Spring into Music Gala. We are particularly pleased to have you join us for this special evening, our our first in-person gala event since the pandemic.

They say that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and the challenges the Symphony has experienced over the past two years have proven to us that new approaches and learnings can significantly improve our achievements and performance to goals. Of note, prior to the pandemic, the Symphony reached approximately 140,000 people annually. By increasing our digital exposure on the various social media platforms, that reach expanded to more than 10 million, bringing the extraordinary talents of our musicians and Music Director Xian Zhang to an audience worldwide. Tonight, the Symphony is honored to pay tribute to one of New Jersey’s most outstanding business leaders, John E. Harmon Sr., whose personal and professional affiliations demonstrate his commitment to community-building initiatives and efforts. We are also pleased to showcase the members of the Symphony and its Youth Orchestra program in addition to the genius of our Resident Artistic Catalyst Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR). Finally, I extend my sincere appreciation to the members of the gala committee, table hosts and guests for their support of this event’s fund- and awareness-raiser. They help make Newark a city we can be proud of. It is also truly appropriate this evening to honor John E. Harmon, Sr., the Founder President, and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey. He has been a longtime supporter of New Jersey’s economic growth and empowerment of our business community. He also works to connect our youth with the �ne arts. John E. Harmon Sr., IOM African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ) Founder, President & CEO

John E. Harmon Sr., IOM, is the founder, president and CEO of the African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey (AACCNJ). In this role, he serves as an advocate on behalf of New Jersey’s 1.1 million African American residents and more than 70,000 black-owned businesses to ensure that government policies provide fairness, equity and access to a level playing field in the marketplace. Harmon identifies strategic partnerships in the public and private sectors to connect AACCNJ members and supporters to resources and opportunities to grow and sustain their goals and objectives. He was recently acknowledged by Return on Information-New Jersey (ROI) for the second consecutive year as the No. 1 Influencer: Person of Color in New Jersey and was recognized as one of the NJ Business Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021 laureates. Harmon has been instrumental in connecting the New Jersey Symphony to the Trenton area to bring our education programs to new audiences. We salute his dynamic leadership as the Symphony continues its journey forward with a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion to better reflect and serve our vibrant communities.

RESIDENT ARTISTIC CATALYST Daniel Bernard Roumain’s acclaimed work as a composer, performer, educator and activist spans more than two decades, and he has been commissioned by venerable artists and institutions worldwide. “About as omnivorous as a contemporary artist gets” (New York Times), DBR is perhaps the only composer whose collaborations span Philip Glass, Bill T. Jones, Savion Glover and Lady Gaga.

Daniel Bernard Roumain Resident Artistic Catalyst

Known for his signature violin sounds infused with myriad electronic, urban and African American music influences, DBR takes his genre-bending music beyond the proscenium. He is a composer of chamber, orchestral and operatic works; has won an Emmy for Outstanding Musical Composition for his collaborations with ESPN; has been featured as keynote performer at technology conferences; and created large-scale, site-specific musical events for public spaces. DBR earned his doctorate in music composition from the University of Michigan and is currently institute professor and professor of practice at Arizona State University. An avid arts industry leader, DBR serves on the board of directors of the League of American Orchestras, Association of Performing Arts Presenters and Creative Capital and the advisory committee of the Sphinx Organization, and he was co-chair of 2015 and 2016 APAP Conferences. DBR most recently scored the film Ailey (d. Jamila Wignot), which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2021. He also created the musical score for The Just and The Blind, a collaboration with spoken word artist and writer Marc Bamuthi Joseph, commissioned by Carnegie Hall; and a new work for Washington State University’s Symphonic Band, Falling Black Into The Sky, based on the work of the artist James Turrell and his “light work” at Roden Crater. The New Jersey Symphony uses a system of string rotation. In each string section, members are listed in order of seniority. The musicians and librarians employed by the Symphony are members of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada.
