Dear Friends, Music speaks. It’s our most profound and direct form of communication; it tells stories and expresses emotions. For our 2018–19 season, I’ve chosen pieces that are inspired by great stories, myths and poems, bringing these words to vivid life. And as we welcome jazz musicians, Indian sarod virtuosos and singers from Newark and the New Jersey community, and celebrate Chinese New Year all on the NJSO stages, I hope you’ll hear how music speaks in a common language across diverse cultures and traditions.

From our season–opening performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to our collaborations with the finest soloists—including Emanuel Ax, Daniil Trifonov, Augustin Hadelich, Dawn Upshaw and so many more—to our special presentations of two unmissable Star Wars films, this season is full of highlights. I look forward to seeing you at our concerts and hearing how our music speaks to you.

The Opening Weekend focuses on words of inspiration about our shared humanity. You’ll marvel at the text of Malala’s moving speech to the United Nations and thrill to the excitement of a massed choir singing “Ode to Joy.” Zhang Conducts Beethoven 9, Oct 5–7.

Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird is one of the most rousing musical tales in the canon. Hear it alongside a vibrant discovery, Florence Price’s Piano Concerto, magnificently rendered by Aaron Diehl, an acomplished jazz pianist. Rhapsody in Blue & The Firebird, Nov 29–Dec 2.

The Winter Festival—the focal point of our season—explores music inspired by stories and poetry and features guest artists whose music making is louder than words. NJSO Winter Festival This year’s Winter Festival celebrates great works of music that were inspired by myths, stories and poetry. While we explore this idea throughout the season, the Winter Festival presents a rich opportunity to single out music that is deep, moving and profound in its expression of the theme, works like Manfred Symphony, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony and Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra.

XIAN’S MEMORIES OF CHINESE NEW YEAR When I think about the Chinese New Year, these memories always come to me: large family gatherings, the aroma of delicious food, fireworks at midnight (dangerously fun for kids) and above all, the joy of simply being together at this special time of the year. Ever since I came to the United States, I have celebrated Chinese New Year less and less often.

But in my heart, just like for many people who grew up in a foreign country, the nostalgia is always there, the longing of the old times will never go away.

It’s important to me that my own boys and kids like them get their chance to know what Chinese New Year is like. At the start of the most fortunate “Pig” year, I look forward to seeing our community coming together and celebrating with the NJSO.
