DEAR FRIENDS, Welcome to the 2017–18 season of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, my second as Music Director. It’s been a joy to begin this journey with the NJSO, and I’m quite excited to bring these programs to music lovers around the state. I’m particularly looking forward to the Winter Festival—America, Inspiring. We will be celebrating composers who came to America and found their musical voices flourishing, just like I did when I came to study music in the United States. I look forward to conducting a piece from the very first program I performed with the NJSO in January 2010, and of course Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony. It’s important to me to perform a few new works for our listeners, including great classics that the NJSO hasn’t played before, such as Prokofiev’s Sixth Symphony and Respighi’s Fountains of Rome! Finally, I’m thrilled our very own NJSO musicians will get the opportunity to show off their talents in the complete Brandenburg Concertos of J.S. Bach. Whether this is your first time or 100th time at an NJSO concert, I hope that you’ll join us and be “in the moment” for great music.

The NJSO shows its virtuosity in Berlioz’s fantastic tale of thwarted love, opium dreams and witchcraft. BEETHOVEN Overture to The Creatures of Prometheus Stirring and primal, introduces Beethoven’s sole ballet. Displays a youthful spark of genius. BEETHOVEN Piano Concerto No. 5, “Emperor” Beethoven composed this majestic concerto during a Napoleonic siege; like his Fifth Symphony, an iconic masterpiece. BERLIOZ Symphonie fantastique An obsessive love turns demonic in this bold tour de force, which Berlioz wrote to win over celebrated actress Harriet Smithson.

Melody reigns supreme as Tchaikovsky channels Mozart in the delightful Variations, with virtuoso cellist Alban Gerhardt as soloist. Beethoven’s Sixth is his most serene symphony, a vision of the countryside ruffled only by a passing thunderstorm, while “celestial” is an apt word to describe American composer Kernis’ gorgeous opener. KERNIS Musica celestis (NJSO Premiere) A modern-day ethereal Adagio for Strings—Kernis conjures the sound of medieval angels singing in praise of God. TCHAIKOVSKY Variations on a Rococo Theme Agile and sprightly, Tchaikovsky’s Variations recall the effortless grace of Mozart’s music. BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral” For sheer beauty, few Beethoven pieces rival his ode to the splendors of the countryside.

Flowing melody awaits in Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, while Stephen Hough—“one of the greatest living pianists” (The Times of London)—brings virtuosic fireworks to the composer’s kaleidoscopic Rhapsody. Prokofiev’s Sixth, a personal favorite of Xian Zhang, is a poignant postwar elegy. RACHMANINOFF Vocalise Soothing and searching, the Vocalise theme has been arranged for everything from voice to double bass. America has always been a place of monumental inspiration, feeding the ideals of people from all over the world. This season’s Winter Festival celebrates artists who found creative inventiveness within this great nation, featuring works from Britten, Ravel, Korngold and more. The Festival closes with the treasured symphony that embodies America’s embrace of creativity, Dvořák’s “New World.” NJSO Accent events throughout the Festival explore other artists and art forms that illustrate American inspiration.

Just as American concertgoers of another era cheered Prokofiev and Respighi, audiences are raining accolades on 21-year-old Chinese pianist George Li, silver medalist in the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition, and the NJSO’s Xian Zhang. CHEN YI Ge Xu (NJSO Premiere) Dramatic and arresting; subtitled “Antiphony,” it sparks energy from the clash of modern and traditional styles. PROKOFIEV Piano Concerto No. 3 Pianistic pyrotechnics, cutting wit and moments of tenderness. Prokofiev came to Chicago to premiere it. RESPIGHI Fountains of Rome (NJSO Premiere) A spirited, evocative portrait of the Eternal City; it depicts a quartet of fountains at dawn, morning, afternoon and sunset. RESPIGHI Pines of Rome Blooming and sumptuous; the closing piece Xian conducted on her first program with the NJSO in 2010. Generations of moviegoers have enjoyed it as part of Disney’s Fantasia 2000.

Chloë Hanslip, praised by BBC Music Magazine for her “panache, poise and laser-like accuracy,” will shine in Austrian emigré Korngold’s resplendent violin concerto. BRITTEN Simple Symphony Nimble and exuberant, this piece draws on music the British master wrote as a student. KORNGOLD Violin Concerto Technically demanding, yet warm and richly expressive. Korngold conquered Hollywood with film music in this vein, a precursor to the scores of John Williams. DVOŘÁK Symphony No. 9, “From the New World” Written during his time in the United States, Dvořák’s glorious magnum opus was inspired by Native American melodies and African-American spirituals.

MAHLER Songs of a Wayfarer Mercurial and ecstatic, Mahler’s charming themes appear later in his first symphony. This, his first song cycle, announced his genius to the world. BRAHMS Symphony No. 1 Brahms, in awe of Beethoven’s Ninth, aspired to equal it in the finale of this proud and majestic symphony.

The MSU ensemble brings exquisite luster to a moving pair of a cappella works. Performed without intermission, the evening culminates in Mozart’s awe-inspiring Requiem, his final gift to the ages. MOZART Ave verum corpus Stately, filled with grace; suspends time with a long-breathed melody. RHEINBERGER Abendlied for a cappella chorus PARRY Flame for a cappella chorus Rheinberger’s consoling piece proclaims: “Bide with us, for evening shadows darken, and the day will soon be over.” Parry’s contemporary work strikes a hopeful note with a quote from the Buddha: “A single flame that shares its light is but strengthened by this splitting in two.” MOZART Requiem Was Mozart writing his own epitaph with this shattering work? His concert with the NJSO brings a hilarious re-telling of his journey to and on the Broadway stage and features a program of great music from the theater along with comedy and audience interaction. It’s a much-heralded event of music, laughter and fun. Performance on Apr 15 presented in collaboration with State Theatre New Jersey.

Beauty comes in many forms. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto is a sparkling, ever-flowing river of melody. The rugged landscape of Finland beckons in a pair of compelling scores, including Sibelius’ transporting Fifth Symphony. FAGERLUND Isola (NJSO premiere) Ferocious, astounding, calling geological forces to mind; the piece’s title means “island.” MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto Every note casts a spell in this much-adored concerto; the Andante’s caressing tune is a treasured highlight. SIBELIUS Symphony No. 5 Seemingly hewn from Finland’s forests and mountains, this arresting work is filled with the grandeur of nature.
