Statement ceilings are nothing new. Tey’ve been around for centuries and were the ultimate symbol of opulence. From the Palace of Versailles to the Sistine Chapel, ceilings were once the epitome of art. Tis extravagance fell out of favor following World War II, and the ceiling was slowly forgotten. Rest assured — times are changing.

“Ten — ffeen years ago, ceilings pretty much stopped at the crown molding. Now, in

almost every house I build, the main focal point of the living area is a statement ceiling. It’s almost expected in new, high-end homes,” says Ben Chapman, owner of Ben Chapman Development. From cofered ceilings with decorative molding to exposed beams to vibrant paint and wallpaper, there’s a wide variety of ways to add interest to your ceilings. Tere’s been so much recent attention that this style trend garnered its own interior design concept known as ‘ Te Fifh Wall.’ Tis concept emphasizes the importance of putting the same amount of thought into your ceilings as you would your walls. Adding interest to your ffh wall can be surprisingly easy and impactful. New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine spoke to Ben Chapman

to learn more about this design concept.

What can you tell us about the ffh wall concept?

Adding interest to your fifh wall can be surprisingly easy and impactful. We spoke to Ben Chapman to learn more about this design concept.

Te ffh wall is your ceiling or the empty space above your head. Tis concept is a reminder to formulate the design of your home with everything from foor to ceiling considered. Intentionally including the ceiling in the design of your home is essential and here to stay. Tat said, the ceiling should not be considered separately from the rest of your home design. For example, if you have wainscotting on your walls, something bolder, like cofered ceilings, will complete the design aesthetic. However, if your home is more modern and minimalist, paint or wallpaper may be more appropriate for your design.

Do you have any tips for ceiling design?

Yes! At the risk of sounding repetitive, my biggest tip is to consider the room as a whole. Don’t decide that you

want to change your design and just change the ceiling. In other words, the ceiling shouldn’t be an aferthought. My second tip is that when it comes to statement ceilings, it’s a lot easier to do on a new house that’s being built than to add to an older home. Framing in cofered ceilings afer a house is built can be costly, labor-intensive, and messy. Exposed beams are another style that’s hard to do afer a house is built. architectural interest to a home’s aesthetic. Te best way to do this is to expose the actual framing of a home and fnish the beams in a material of your choice. You can add reclaimed materials or create a faux beam if the house is already built. However, this is ofen not well done and can look odd in the space if it’s not natural to the structure. If you want to add a statement ceiling to a fnished home, I think it’s best to start with paint or wallpaper.

Okay, let’s talk about paint and wallpaper. Any tips?

Home & Design Shore 2024 | LIFESTYLE NJLifestyleMag.com 20 Elizabeth Nicholas 609.464.0727 bnicholas01@aol.com Christine Bruno 609.457.1086 homes@christinebruno.com The Real Estate Sisters of Balsley Losco Realty 1630 New Road, Northfeld, NJ 08225 | Offce: 609.646.3207 D ream Big... we’l handle te detail!

Te frst thing you want to consider is your ceiling height. If you have low ceilings, you’ll want to avoid anything too dark because it will make the space feel more closed in. Paint can be surprisingly impactful. I built a house on the ocean, and in the dining room that overlooked the water, they painted the ceiling a light blue. Tis simple paint choice connected the entire space to its environment. It turned out beautifully. And when it comes to wallpaper, I always recommend talking to an expert. Wallpapers can be

tricky both aesthetically and when it comes to installing. But, when it’s done well, it can transform a space.

Last question: What trends are you noticing regarding the ffh wall?

Currently, minimalist modern designs are trending, but that changes very fast. Tings like very clean, simple wood paneling or painted ceilings align with the wall trends that I’m doing, which include sanitary casing and moldings, which are very simple baseboards and window frames. When it comes down to it, in my opinion, trends aren’t the most important thing to consider. You should choose a design that you like. When done well, anything can be timeless. n

The Comfort Of Home

Kelly Marrero, the owner of Comfort Keepers in Galloway, enlightens us on the intricacies of care choices for your loved ones, spanning from in-home assistance to nursing homes.

“Will you still need me?

Will you still feed me when I’m 64?” Tis famous lyric from Te Beatles’ classic song speaks to the universal concern of aging. As we advance in years, the question of how we will be cared for becomes increasingly important. Families ofen face the crucial decision of fnding the best care for their loved ones. Te choice generally centers around in-home care versus nursing homes, with many opting for in-home care based on its personalized services, emotional benefts, and fnancial advantages.

Galloway resident Marta De Armas, age 76, and her husband, age 84, knew they wanted to remain in their home as they aged. Marta struggles with systemic lupus and arthritis, as well as an injury that makes it difcult for her to use one arm. Afer surgery a few years ago, Marta contacted Comfort Keepers. Teir full-time nurse developed a care plan to help her with daily tasks, such as light cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, and personal care. She says the care she receives three days a week is a godsend. She and her husband enjoy the company of their caregiver, who has become part of the family. Marta believes it has helped her to remain independent in her home. She refects, “If I did not get all of the help I have, I would probably be in a wheelchair. Tey are always concerned about us. Tey are a blessing.” While her sons want her to move closer to them in North Jersey, Marta is hesitant. “I know I am in good hands with Comfort Keepers, and I don’t know what would happen there… I would move if I could take Comfort Keepers with me!”

Children in foster care who have a CASA volunteer are more likely to succeed in school, adjust to change, and they are half as likely to re-enter the foster care system later. As a volunteer, you can make a diference for a child in your community who has experienced abuse or neglect.

Kelly Marrero, owner of Comfort Keepers in Atlantic and Cape May counties, became involved in the business fourteen years ago. She was motivated by a personal tragedy involving her grandmother, who was sent to a nursing home. Tree days afer she moved in, she did not show up for breakfast or lunch. By the time someone opened her door, she was lying on the foor. Her grandmother had a massive stroke and, sadly, did not survive. From that moment, Kelly vowed to make life better for people as they age. At Comfort Keepers, everyone is an employee, not a contractor. Tey are trained, vetted, and backgroundchecked. Tey work under the guidance of a nursing director to ensure attentive and personalized care. In addition to being licensed by the state of New Jersey, they have a minimum of 40 hours of training every year. Kelly reveals, “Most of them have come out of facilities where they were overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated. So, when you get someone to care for you like we care for Marta, you get our undivided, professional attention.”

Te pandemic highlighted the challenges nursing homes face. Many caregivers resigned without being replaced, leaving these facilities understafed. “It was bad before; it got horrible during COVID-19, and it is no better today,” according to Kelly. It is a sharp contrast to the care she provides through Comfort Keepers, “You want to stay in the safety of your own home with respect and dignity. You want someone to give you care that is tailor-made for you. We can take you to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, whatever you need, and it is a fraction of the cost of a longterm care facility.” According to AARP, “Medicare does not cover the cost of any type of long-term care, whether you are in a nursing home, assisted living community, or your own home.” Medicare’s limitations on covering long-term care costs mean many

people must turn to private pay or long-term care insurance. Te situation is even worse for lowincome Medicaid residents. Only fve percent of nursing home beds are reserved for these residents, making it extremely difcult for them to fnd a facility.

In-home care allows seniors to remain in the familiar environment of their own homes, surrounded by memories and personal belongings. Tis familiarity can be incredibly comforting for those with cognitive conditions like dementia, who beneft from a stable environment. Unlike nursing homes, in-home care ofers fexible scheduling to accommodate the varying needs of seniors, from a few hours a week to round-the-clock assistance. Tis fexibility extends to the level of care provided, whether it is help with daily activities or more intensive medical support. With a dedicated caregiver, clients form a bond and trusting relationship that can be difcult to achieve in the rotating staf environment of a nursing home. Plus, in-home care can be more economical, particularly for those who do not require 24/7 supervision. It also eliminates the expenses associated with moving to a residential facility. Empowering seniors to maintain a level of independence, and in-home care contributes to their sense of dignity and selfworth. Te ability to continue participating in daily routines can profoundly impact their mental and emotional well-being.

Choosing between in-home care and nursing homes is deeply personal and depends on individual circumstances. However, the benefts of inhome care — personalized attention, comfort, fexibility, and cost-efectiveness — make it a compelling option for many families. n

TOYOTA’S CROWNING GLORY

From its impressive fuel efficiency and advanced hybrid technology to its luxurious interior features and Toyota’s renowned reliability, the Toyota Crown Hybrid emerges as a compelling choice for discerning drivers seeking a balance of performance and eco-consciousness in their automotive experience.

It’s not often we see cars that break the mold. But the Crown does. Not only is it a new full-size sedan, but one that looks and operates differently than any that have come before it.

To buy an electric vehicle (EV) or not to buy — that is the question! On the one hand, you want to do your part to lower your carbon footprint by driving a low (or no) emissions vehicle. However, EVs can be pricey and may present you with charging station issues — at home and in your travels. So, what’s a civic-minded car buyer to do? As is the case in many dilemmas, compromise is usually the answer.

If you are not ready to take charge (pun intended) and buy an all-powered electric car, a hybrid may be for you. What’s a hybrid? It’s a car powered by a combination internal combustion engine (gas) and an electric motor.

According to Reuters analytics, sales of hybrid vehicles in the United States jumped 76% from 2021 to 2022. Te main reason hybrids have become so popular is fuel savings — especially for people who do a fair amount of city driving. And, fuel savings equate to more dollars in your pocket because you do not need to fll up the tank as much as you do with a gas-powered car. In addition to money savings, the regenerative “self-charging” battery means there is no need to plug it in. All you need to do to charge the battery is drive.

Te Toyota Crown

Although hybrid automobile manufacturers range from Ford to Ferrari, Toyota continues to be a leader in the hybrid arena. In 1997, the Japanese car giant introduced the world to the frst hybrid vehicle and has been “driving” the market for the last 30 years. What is new and diferent from Toyota in 2024 in hybrid land? To top the market, Toyota has introduced the appropriately named Crown — a full-size, 4-door hybrid sedan that is geared for those who prefer the comfort and style of a larger car as opposed to a boxy SUV. Since rival options like the Nissan Maxima and Chrysler 300 have been discontinued, the Crown is the obvious choice for the person who cares about fuel efciency without forgoing higher-end amenities and class.

So, let’s take a good look at the Toyota Crown:

Performance Facts

Te Crown comes in three trim levels — the standard XLE ($40,000+), midlevel Limited ($45,000+), and top-end Platinum ($53,000+). What separates the XLE and Limited models from the Platinum is the hybrid drive systems. If your priority is fuel efciency, the XLE and Limited are for you. If you prefer a little more of a kick, the Platinum trim has more power and speed. Te standard hybrid ofers 236 horsepower, which is more than most people need for around-town driving and even highway speeds — 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds. With the non-turbo 2.5-liter hybrid powertrains in the XLE and Limited Crown, you can expect to see 41 mpg in mixed city/highway driving. Te Crown Platinum comes in a bit lower at 30 mpg combined because it prioritizes a little more power over fuel economy.

Exterior

Regardless of the option you select, the Crown is elegant and streamlined in design. All models come standard with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) as well as LED taillights and stop lights. In addition, all Crowns ofer

heated power outside mirrors with turn signals and blind spot warning indicators. Another plus worth mentioning is the 2-tone paint scheme — featuring a black hood, roof, and trunk contrasted with various choices for the body color. Currently, the 2-tone option is only available in the Platinum Crown.

Although the plain-as-day 4-door sedan proudly stands separate from its SUV cousins, ironically, there is a favorable similarity. Because the Crown sits higher than ordinary sedans (almost 4 inches taller than the Toyota Camry), getting in and out of the car is much easier compared to similar models.

Interior

Once inside, you may not want to exit the simple and yet classy 5-passenger cabin. Creature comforts include acoustic noise-reducing glass in the windshield and front windows. And speaking of glass, the standard fxed panoramic roof adds “airiness” and light to the cabin. In addition, the Limited and Platinum Crowns come standard with heated and ventilated front seats.

Also included in the Limited and Platinum package is a 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen with 11 speakers. Te system is wireless (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible) complete with SiriusXM satellite radio. And, don’t forget to take advantage of the voice commands like, “Hey, Toyota, what’s the latest trafc report near me?” Your own virtual driving assistant.

Warranty

Te Crown series, as is the case for other Toyota vehicles, ofers three years or 36,000 miles, whichever happens frst warranty. All power trains are covered for fve years or 60,000 miles. Especially important for hybrid vehicles — the hybrid batteries are covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles. In addition, Toyota throws in a complimentary scheduled maintenance plan as well as roadside assistance for the frst two years or 25,000 miles. n

WELKOM TO AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam beckons with its historic charm, scenic canals, and cultural riches. Explore iconic landmarks, indulge in local delights, and venture into the countryside for a quintessential Dutch experience.

As the capital and most populated city in the Netherlands, Amsterdam shines as one of Europe’s most visited gems. It is a fabulous city that is quaint, photogenic, and welcoming. So warm that you will hear the Dutch phrase, Welkom in ons huis (welcome to our home) wherever you fnd yourself around the city.

It doesn’t take long to fgure out that Amsterdam is easy and manageable. You can leisurely stroll around for hours, with pit stops at cafes where you can enjoy crunchy caramel Stroopwafels and a cofee. A MUST DO while in Amsterdam — take a boat on a maze of winding canals. Other must-see sights ofer something for everyone. For example, history bufs are compelled to visit the house memorializing the tragic story of Anne Frank.

If you are an art lover, Amsterdam ofers fabulous museums ranging from Van Gogh to Rembrandt. With a short excursion out of town, you will encounter felds and felds of tulips bursting with color as well as iconic windmills galore.

On and Around the Canals

With over 60 miles of navigable canals, Amsterdam is known as the “Venice of the North.”

Cruising through the city waters gives you a picturesque perspective of the many gabled, narrow houses (some still standing from the 1700s) that give Amsterdam its unique look and feel. As an extra treat, some boat tours may include signature Dutch specialties like Gouda cheese and a cold glass of Amstel beer.

Another fabulous way to get a feel for the city is by bike. Afer all, Amsterdam is considered one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe with an abundance of paths, bike rentals, and racks wherever you go. In fact, statistics show that there are four times more bicycles than cars in Amsterdam. Although you can easily fnd a bike and pedal on your own, there are plenty of guided tours you can sign up for that highlight the city’s rich history.

A recent fan of Amsterdam’s charm, JC Byrnes, fell instantly in love with the city when visiting last year. Byrnes explains, “Amsterdam is a beautiful, clean city with a lot of charm where residents ride their bicycles everywhere. Te people are so friendly, and that makes it a lovely city to visit again and again.”

When the sun goes down, Amsterdam’s nightlife is always hopping with its world-famous nightclubs. Another nighttime excursion for tourists is taking a walk on the wild side to De Wallen. Te neighborhood, flled with hundreds of one-room glass cabins, is rented by legal prostitutes who advertise their wares behind a window lit up by red lights. Tus, the name “Red Light District.” Word for the wise — don’t let the women see you taking pictures of them — they will not be happy with you! Another legal vice in Amsterdam is the sale and use of marijuana — openly sold in many a cofee shop.

native son — Vincent Van Gogh. As a result, the museum houses over 200 of his iconic paintings of sunfowers and landscapes.

Te museum also introduces you to his personal story — his art and his tragic life. Because the Van Gogh Museum draws thousands of tourists each day, it is best to plan your visit and get tickets in advance. Another option, to bypass the long lines, is to sign up for a guided tour of the museum. In addition, the museum ofers other works by modern painters including Gauguin and Monet.

Without a doubt, Amsterdam’s most touching museum is the Anne Frank Huis. With well over a million visitors each year, the house where Anne and her family hid during WWII until they were deported by the Nazis, and ultimately sent to their deaths, is now a museum. Te young girl’s heartbreaking story was captured in her famous diary — a story memorialized in books and movies to this day. To visit the museum, you must purchase a timed ticket in advance.

A Day Out of Town

Located only 12 miles outside of Amsterdam, the fabulous village of Zaanse Schans is made up of Dutch windmills and old wooden buildings. Another quaint town, Edam (as in the cheese), is stereotypically charming as well with windmills and a historic cheese market. While on your countryside excursion, don’t forget to check out a wooden clog factory — a fun souvenir of Holland to bring back home!

As for tulips, day trips to see the fabulous fowers are a seasonal option — usually from March to May. During that time, there are many tour groups available to take you out of Amsterdam proper to see the colorful acres of blooms. For example, the 79 acres that make up Keukenhof, one of Holland’s most famous fower exhibitions, includes a boat trip through the 7 million fower bulbs planted around the park. n

2025

Founded in 2011, Atlantic City Fashion Week, held thrice a year, attracts thousands of visitors to descend on America’s playground. Tis multi-day showcase includes fashion shows, seminars, celebrity appearances, retail events, and industry parties. Trough the years, Atlantic City Fashion Week (ACFW) has emerged as a pivotal cultural event that not only celebrates the dynamic world of fashion but has cemented itself into the cultural fabric of South Jersey.

Producers Lamont and Jeana Bowling have orchestrated this vibrant and diverse showcase with an incredible eye for detail. Jeana brings 25-plus years of experience as an Executive and General Manager in the retail clothing industry and has worked for top names in retail, including Macy’s, GAP, and Ralph Lauren. In a recent interview, Lamont was asked to expand his description of visual stimulation as it relates to both the designer and the audience. “Ofen designers will ask us “what’s your theme?” We want a show that will leave you with a sense of wonderment. We strive to create a show that will keep the attention of the fashion novice. Someone who does not frequent fashion week events will walk away with plenty to talk about on the ride home. Tat is the goal.”

South Jersey, particularly Atlantic City, is not known as a fashion center. However, this is starting to change through the eforts of ACFW, which is bridging the glamorous fashion scene with the laid-back coastal culture. Why Atlantic City? “It is a question that is asked every season. Ten they attend

or participate in Atlantic City Fashion Week, seeing that it is the equivalent of a full production Broadway play with professional lighting, sound, hair, and makeup teams,” says Jeana.

Zoe Saldana once said, “Fashion is art; it is absolute art. It is telling a story.” As an expressive art form, weaving a captive narrative through the garments transcends mere aesthetics. Te designers craf their voices into collections, utilizing textures, colors, and patterns to convey emotions and cultural perspectives. “Fashion or your fashion sense is like describing one’s personality. It is not just clothes. It is attitude. It is aura. It is personality. It is interaction with other people,” says Lamont.

Te passion runs so deep for ACFW, providing a dedicated platform for local and local designers to display their creativity and talent, putting South Jersey in the fashion world. Over the years, the events have highlighted the diversity of South Jersey, with designers drawing inspiration from the region’s rich history, traditions, and multicultural infuences. Critical to their success have been leveraging community engagement and empowerment by actively promoting inclusivity, highlighting a diverse range of models, and embracing various body types, ethnicities, and backgrounds. ACFW, unlike other organizations that have come into town and cashed out, has collaborated with local businesses, creating opportunities for community members to engage with the fashion industry and fostering a sense of pride and empowerment. n

EXPLORING SPAIN’S NOBLE GRAPE

Unraveling the Secrets of Tempranillo

When it comes to the price-quality ratio, not to mention, a wine with a bit of age — no one does it better than Spain! At Passion Vines, we’re coming of an inspiring 3-week educational exploration of one of the greatest wine regions in the world. I thought I would share one of the many topics that we explored.

Understanding Tempranillo [tem-prah-NEE-yoh]

Historically, there are six “noble grapes” of the wine world: 3 red (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir) and 3 white (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling). Tey get this acclaim for their appeal and ubiquitous plantings in all the major wine-producing regions of the world. It’s also common for a country to have its own “noble grape,” and if you’re talking Spain, that would certainly be Tempranillo.

Believed to have received its name from the Spanish word “temprano” (meaning, “early”), this grape is an earlyripening variety that can perform in an enormous range of climates and soils. In fact, due to this versatility, you may fnd Tempranillo under several monikers across Spain’s outstanding wine-producing regions. No matter where you fnd it, you will fnd favors of strawberries, spices, leather, and fresh tobacco, with the ability to turn savory and earthy with bottle-aging.

Catalunya (or Catalonia) is the DO near Barcelona, where there are several sub-regions experimenting with diferent Tempranillobased blends, where the grape here is called “Ull de Llebre.” Te most popular blends from this region are done with Monastrell, the superdense, chewy, concentrated grape variety that gives lots of alcohol and dark fruit favors.

Lastly, we fnish with Rioja — where the name “Tempranillo” is King! Renowned for its detailed and regulated aging classifcation system, which includes terms like “Crianza,” “Reserva” and “Gran Reserva.” Tese classifcations are not only indicators of the quality and style of the wines but also of the aging process, which involves specifc aging in oak barrels and bottles before release.

In the DO of Ribera del Duero, Tempranillo is known as “Tinta del Pais,” where wines here are ofen bottled varietally, though some famous producers like Vega Sicilia are blended with the Bordeaux varieties of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Tempranillo from here is ofen elegant and well-balanced and rivals Rioja in terms of ageworthiness.

Te DO of Toro calls this grape, perhaps not coincidentally, “Tinta de Toro.” For the Cabernet drinker, this one is for you! Here, the wines can be very full-bodied and rich, thanks to the hot, dry climate. In fact, the grapes build sugars so quickly, that the rules for production state that the alcohol level cannot exceed 15%.

Confused? Don’t be. All you really need to know is that there is so much to explore with just one grape variety acting as the star of the show! I highly encourage you to try a few examples for yourself and taste the diference!

Fun Fact: Portugal relies on Tempranillo (where it is called “Tinta Roriz”) as an important grape in creating the great fortifed Port wines. Here, it acts as a counterbalance for the other local grapes in the blend and adds structure for the long haul, especially in Vintage Port.

2011 R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia Reserva Rioja: Tis family-owned winery makes highly individual wines in a style essentially unchanged since its inception in 1877. Tey grow all their grapes using organic methods, ferment using only natural yeasts and do not flter their wines. Goes well with all meat dishes however prepared. A perfect partner to a Leg of New Season Welsh Lamb stufed with wild garlic, rosemary, and anchovies.

It is not a coincidence that Capriccio and Resorts exude charm and elegance. Residing on the second level of the Haddon Hall, old-time Atlantic City, and her rich history add to the ambiance. As soon as you enter the restaurant, you are greeted with an opulent, grandiose, and classic look. U.S. ECONOMY: CAN PRODUCTIVITY SUSTAIN GROWTH?

The productivity of U.S. workers increased by 2.7% in 2023 — well above the average annual rate of 2.1% since the end of World War II, and a dramatic change from 2022, when productivity dropped by 2.0%. It’s also a big improvement over the 0.9% growth rate in 2021.1

According to the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service, “Productivity growth is a primary driver of long-term economic growth and improvements in living standards.”2 On a more immediate level, the productivity surge in 2023 may help explain why the U.S. economy was able to grow at a strong pace while infation dropped.

Doing more with less

Broadly, productivity is the ratio of output to inputs. A productivity increase means that output increases faster than inputs, essentially producing more with less.

Te most commonly cited productivity measure for the U.S. economy is labor productivity for the nonfarm business sector (the data cited in the frst paragraph of this report). In simple terms, this is the value of goods and services produced per hour of labor. Te nonfarm business sector comprises most U.S. business activity excluding farms, general government, and nonprofts.

Boosting GDP while fghting infation

Te 2.7% increase in 2023 means that, on average, 2.7% more value was created for each hour of labor. Tis helps boost gross domestic product (GDP), while also helping to control infation by holding back the wage-price spiral, which can push infation out of control.

In a tight employment market, as we have had for some time, a shortage of workers can force businesses to ofer higher wages, which they pass on to consumers at higher prices. Because consumers are then earning more at their jobs, they demand more goods and services and are willing to pay higher prices, which pushes businesses to hire more workers at higher wages, continuing the cycle. Increased productivity allows businesses to keep prices lower even as they pay workers more. Tis seems to have occurred in 2023, with average hourly wages rising by 4.3%, while infation dropped to 3.4% — the frst time since the pandemic that wages increased faster than infation.3

Why is productivity increasing and can it be sustained?

Increases in labor productivity are typically driven by improved

tools and technology, more efcient processes and organizations, and increased worker experience, education, and training. Te proliferation of computers in the workplace spurred a productivity surge in the 1990s, and some analysts point to artifcial intelligence (AI) as contributing to the 2023 increase. AI may have already improved some businesses, but any large-scale impact may take years, as businesses integrate AI through worker training and new processes. As this unfolds, AI could help drive a long-term productivity surge.

A more immediate explanation for the current increase may be adjustment and experience with the hybrid work model. A recent survey found that 43% of remote workers felt working from home makes them more productive, while only 14% believed it makes them less productive. (Another 43% said it makes no diference.)5 Te ideal situation would allow employees to work in the most productive environment. Tree years afer the pandemic, businesses may be improving that balance, and it’s possible that further developments in hybrid work could continue to drive productivity gains for some time.

Going Forward

Productivity increases can produce benefts across our society from wage increases to lower rates of infation. Artifcial Intelligence and new technologies may allow us to become more productive over time and while this intelligence may replace certain jobs, overall, it could be a net beneft for our society. Countries and governments should take time to understand the importance of employee productivity so that they can compete globally and allow their country to thrive. n
