Happy Holidays!

“Sharing the holiday with other people, and feeling that you’re giving of yourself, gets you past all the commercialism.” —Caroline Kennedy

O

n behalf of the Lifestyle Family, we want to wish you all a happy holiday season. We love and appreciate all of you and your positive vibes. We at Lifestyle strive to be positive and share all that makes living in South Jersey a great lifestyle! With that being said, the holidays are about the connections we have with others. Although we are in the midst of a transition both economically and socially, it is the bonds that hold us together to make us what we are. We as humans have an advantage over all others; the ability to work together to elevate our current position. So, in the spirit of the holidays, let’s all work together to make life better for those around us. A lifestyle of giving is a lifestyle that humbles us and centers us on what is important in life. Our harmonious connections with others in our community are what make life great. In this issue of Lifestyle, you may notice a few subtle changes. As we move into the New Year, you will begin to see many other changes as we evolve into the next iteration of New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine. In this Holiday issue, we showcase one of our premier partners, Distinctive Car Toys. James Lin and the crew over at the shop are there to make sure you are driving a vehicle that brings you joy. Whether it’s a new car or one that you love but want to upgrade, check out our feature on how to customize your car. And what better way to celebrate the holiday season than a family night out at the Ballet? Or enjoy all of the holiday decorations on our neighbor’s homes. In our Leisure column, we list festive holiday events that will be sure to get you in the spirit. Another great way to celebrate is getting the family together to break bread and toast to a New Year. No one knows that better than Gino Iovino of Girsole. We had a chance to celebrate with Gino at his restaurant, and this year marks his 30th anniversary. There are not many restaurants that last 30 years, but when you taste the food at Girsole, you will know why it has been a South Jersey staple for authentic Italian food for so long. It’s a dining experience you don’t want to miss. Another exciting gift will be the unveiling of Lucy the Elephant. We are looking forward to a tour of Lucy as she nears her exterior skin replacement project. Please join us at the Dina Martin show on December 11 to raise money for this great landmark. In closing, I wish you all the best of the best and a joyous holiday season that is spent with the ones you love and cherish. Please keep an eye out for some exciting changes in the upcoming year. Your love and support of our community and our magazine are our driving force.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

Shopping for someone else? There are gift options galore at both Briana Central Square and Talk of the Walk. Some of our favorites this season include: Loungewear For those who love to look cute while being cozy, try Z Supply Loungewear, paired with a pair of plush socks, at Briana Central Square.

Tumblers There are tumblers, and then there is the crystal tumbler, made with over 5000 hand placed crystals, available at Talk of the Walk. For the woman who has everything, the crystal tumbler adds some luxury to your water game.

Beaded bags at Talk of the Walk These purses are part utilitarian (you can certainly fit the essentials) and part conversation-starter. Unique and eye-catching, we’d love to find one under the tree this year.

Jewelry Whether it’s a statement piece from Jeff Lieb at Talk to the Walk or from Luv AJ (below) at Briana Central Square, jewelry is always a great gift.

f there’s ever a time to throw a little caution to the wind — fashionably speaking — it’s during the holiday season, when even the ordinary turns extraordinary, and every space is decked out it in glitter, glam and boughs of holly. In addition to being the most wonderful time of the year, December is full of parties — from the holiday work party to fabulous fetes — and finding clothing to match the mood is practically obligatory. New Jersey Lifestyle Magazine spoke with two of the area’s most popular boutiques — Talk of the Walk, with locations in Atlantic City and Stone Harbor, and Briana Central Square in Linwood — about trends and styles you’ll love this holiday season.

“Faux leather — including leather dresses, pants, and blazers/jackets — is huge for this holiday,” says Briana Giannone, Co-owner of Briana Central Square. As something that can be worn casually or spiced up with bold statement pieces, faux leather is an arresting addition to any wardrobe. At Talk of the Walk, faux leather can be found in everything from the striking Black Vegan Leather Tunic, available in black, camel and 12/22 Presenter taupe, which can be worn as a dress or jacket to black faux leather wide legged palazzo pants. And at Briana Central Square, the Alice + Olivia vegan leather dress is buttery soft and splendidly delicious.

Sequins and Embellishments “Big things this year are sparkle and mesh,” says Rose McCarthy, General Manager and Assistant Buyer of Talk of the Walk. Sparkling sequins, beads and embellishments add panache to any outfit, and any party. Whether you opt to go full flare with something like the Sheer Mesh Jacket with multi-dimensional vegan leather flowers — tapping into both the faux leather and mesh trends — or the white total sequin jacket, or opt for something subtler, like black Frank Lyman Black Crystal Bow Back Jeans, complete with embellished trim and bows on the back of each ankle or an intricately beaded purse — all available at Talk of the Walk — you’re bound to attract all the right kind of attention this holiday season.

Metallics It hardly needs explaining — metallics add the dazzle and radiance to any outfit, and what better time for that extra pizzazz than during the holidays? We love the Alice + Olivia Elba Wide Leg Pant in silver at Briana Central Square — these dramatic silver pants are show-stoppers — finish off the look with a solid top or jacket. If you prefer smaller doses of metallics, opt for any of the Jeff Lieb statement necklaces available at Talk of the Walk. So lightweight they feel like air, these adjustable and bold pieces bring the bling to any outfit.

For many, illness or injury can impact your financial stability pretty quickly. Even a few weeks without a paycheck would be devastating for many people. Supplemental insurance provides additional protection that a typical health insurance policy does not cover. These benefits cover illness and injury sustained both on and off the job. For employers, offering supplemental benefits allows you to offer more benefits to your staff without impacting your bottom line. The plans represent no cost to the employer or union unless they choose to contribute.

I highly recommend bringing a sample of your floor, once you select it, to all of your other appointments when building or remodeling,” says Dana HartmanHiltner, broker associate, realtor, and design consultant with the Hartman Home Team of Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, Fox & Roach. This makes flooring one of the most important decisions that you’ll make when designing your home and because of this — choosing your flooring can be daunting. Couple that with the sheer number of available flooring options and it can feel overwhelming, but don't worry. Dana has some strategic tips

to help you choose the perfect flooring for your home. “I tell my clients that it helps to know what is popular right now and to pull inspiration from the current trends. There have also been some major technological advancements that have made certain flooring styles popular,” Dana says. Knowing what's current helps you wade through the seemingly unending options and provide a starting point. “The most popular selections right now are engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl, also referred to as LVP, flooring,” Dana says. Engineered hardwood flooring has a layer of natural hardwood over layers of engineered plywood so that it looks natural but is more durable and much better in humid environments. LVP flooring is also constructed in layered planks and has some of the same hardwood aesthetics, but it’s made from multiple layers, including a durable wear layer and rigid core. LVP is extraordinarily durable. It's come a long way from the thin sheet vinyl or laminate floors you may be familiar with. “I also recommend that clients run the same flooring throughout the entire home and opt for area rugs in the bedrooms rather than carpeting. This really seems to help with resale since you can always change an area rug a lot easier than an entire room of flooring,” Dana says. Running the same flooring throughout your home also opens up your space, creates a cohesive flow, simplifies maintenance, and is usually more budget-friendly. “From an aesthetic standpoint, the trend right now is definitely lighter and wider for the planks — the brighter and beachier, the better, especially in our area. Tile selections have become more modern, too, with a lot more concrete-looking tile and stacked patterns,” Dana says.

Now that you know what style and materials are popular, according to Dana, there are a few essential factors to consider when starting your search and deciding on the type of flooring — function, practicality, durability, and design. “The first question I usually ask is, who will be living there? How many kids do you have, and do you have any pets? Would you be concerned with your flooring getting scratched?” Dana says. Even the most beautiful flooring

A LIFESTYLE OF ANTI-INFLAMMATION

What we eat affects our health both adversely and positively. Discover why an anti-inflammatory lifestyle is synonymous with a healthy lifestyle. By Robin Stoloff

30

LIFESTYLE

“Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.” This famous quote is often attributed to Hippocrates, who was known as the father of medicine. Although he lived more than 2,400 years ago, his research led him to believe that nutrition is one of the main tools of a doctor. How right he was. Today, we have solid evidence that what we eat affects our health both adversely and positively. Yet our diet is so much more than just calories in and calories out. It often boils down to one word — inflammation. An internet buzz word, it is a term used loosely in conversation, but what exactly is inflammation, and more importantly, how can we prevent it? Inflammation is often compared to a fire. A small fire can keep us warm and be beneficial, but when the fire burns out of control, it can harm us. When we are injured or sick, our immune system sends out inflammatory white blood cells to start healing injured tissues. Chronic inflammation occurs when our body continues to send these cells, which attack healthy tissues and organs. In simple terms, chronic inflammation is an immune response that persists over months or even years. Unlike acute inflammation, such as a wound that causes redness and swelling, chronic inflammation is much more difficult to diagnose. Body aches, fatigue, weight gain, insomnia, digestive issues and frequent infections are symptoms we often attribute to aging. Inflammation can even lead to mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety. Over time, it can damage healthy cells causing debilitating conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, cancer, asthma, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, and stroke. Chronic inflammation is linked to several factors including insufficient sleep, stress, smoking, and lack of physical activity. However, one of the biggest is what we eat. It is estimated that 60% of chronic diseases could be prevented by adopting a healthy diet.

An anti-inflammatory diet is unique to everyone. For instance, some people may tolerate gluten and dairy better than others. For that reason, it is important to recognize what works for you. However, there are general principles that should guide us. One of the major culprits that can increase inflammation is refined sugar. Experts recommend cutting back or eliminating foods high in simple sugars such as sweets, baked goods, soda, and sports drinks. In addition, heavy alcohol consumption may contribute to systemic

inflammation by interfering with our healthy gut bacteria. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in most seed oils (soybean, corn and sunflower oil), processed foods and red meat. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential nutrients, so we need some omega6s in our diet, but they should be limited. The ratio of omega-3s should be greater than omega-6s. In the typical American diet, it is usually the other way around. Trans fats, sometimes referred to as hydrogenated oils, should be eliminated. Foods that contain trans-fats may include margarine, deep-fried foods, and processed foods engineered to have a long shelf-life such as crackers and packaged foods. Full-fat and non-fermented dairy

may have a small effect on increasing inflammation, and people who have a sensitivity to dairy, may not tolerate it as well as others. Research shows fermented dairy such as cultured yogurt and some cheese may be beneficial in small amounts. They are included in the Mediterranean Diet in moderation. There is conflicting research on eggs, one of our most versatile sources of protein, vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids. Some studies show consuming eggs regularly can lead to an increased amount of swelling and joint pain. The yolks contain arachidonic acid, which could help trigger inflammation in the body. While it might not be easy to completely avoid eggs, we can pass on the yolks and simply use the egg whites. So what should we eat? One of the most researched examples of an anti-inflammatory way of eating is the traditional Mediterranean diet. It is rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and fiber, and legumes. It emphasizes nuts, seeds, and olive oil as sources of fat. It also includes a moderate consumption of fish and shellfish, white meat, eggs, and fermented dairy products (cheese and yogurt), and small amounts of sweets and red meat. Green tea and coffee have also been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect. The internet is loaded with claims that certain foods reduce or create inflammation. However, it is important to keep in mind that adding or reducing a certain food misses the main point. Nutrition is just one piece of the anti-inflammatory puzzle. There is no miracle food that is going to cure chronic inflammation. To truly reduce inflammation, we must adopt a long-term, anti-inflammatory lifestyle. Eat a healthy diet, be active most days of the week, get at least seven hours of sleep each night, manage stress and avoid harmful habits such as smoking or excessive drinking. Bottom line, an antiinflammatory lifestyle is synonymous with a healthy lifestyle. n

Plant-based proteins. Nuts, seeds and legumes (beans, peas, lentils and soybeans) are great alternatives to meat and poultry. Colorful fruits and veggies. Aim for at least seven servings of non-starchy fruits and vegetables daily. Herbs and spices. Many spices have anti-inflammatory properties, including turmeric, ginger, basil, cinnamon, cayenne and oregano. Omega-3s. Omega-3s are heart-healthy, moodboosting and anti-inflammatory. What to Restrict Sugar. Refined foods, such as cookies, cakes, white bread and sweets, increase blood sugar levels and may lead to bacterial overgrowth in the gut, which in turn causes inflammation.

Saturated and trans fat. Saturated fats and trans fats linger in the body and release inflammatory proteins into the bloodstream. Refined grains. The American food supply emphasizes refined grains over nutrient-rich whole grains. Meat. The saturated fat in meat can turn on inflammatory processes. Grilled or charred foods. Foods that are grilled have more proinflammatory end products. Instead, blacken your favorite foods, turn to your stovetop or oven. Broiling, steaming and baking are all good options.

hen most folks buy a new car, they’re happy with what they get at the dealership. They place an order for the features they want, or buy a vehicle off the lot and drive away. But for others, a set of wheels like every other on the road is just plain boring. They want to go faster, be more comfortable, or attract a lot of attention wherever they drive. They just have to change their vehicle to make it truly their own. That’s where customizing, sometimes called modification, comes in. Aftermarket parts — everything from paint jobs or vinyl wraps, window tinting, shiny wheel rims, to lights and sound systems — are there for the taking. If you watched the “Pimp My Ride” series on MTV 15 to 20 years back, you have a good idea of what can be done to an ordinary car. Customizing cars is nothing new. It’s been a craze of enthusiasts since before World War II. Every decade since has seen its fads of how cool people souped up their cars. Today’s technology provides even more options. Before you jump onto this bandwagon, be aware that customization is not a do-it-yourself endeavor. If you’re mechanically inclined, maybe you can install a new stereo

system or some cool lights on your own. But for almost anything else, it is best to trust a professional. An improperly done job can make your car ugly — or worse, illegal and unsafe. A professional installer can help you avoid those pitfalls. Fortunately, several area businesses specialize in turning your stock car into a creation that shows off your personality and style. Walk into the showroom at Distinctive Car Toyz in Egg Harbor Township, and you’ll see an array of ideas on how to enhance your ride. Shiny wheels fill the window display, one shelf displays all sorts of lights and another displays sound systems. The shop’s website offers even more options. One popular — and economically sensible — modification is a vinyl wrap. Technicians wrap your car with a tight-fitting vinyl cover in the color of your choice, along with any designs you might wish to add. Many businesses choose this option for their fleet of cars so that their logo can be prominently displayed. Prices start at about $2,000, less than a good paint job, and take less time to complete. The finish is also easier to maintain, and the look is practically indistinguishable from paint. A good wrap should last up to ten years. Drive along any street, and you’re likely to see lots of vehicles with tinted windows. Car owners like this feature to keep the sun out and to prevent nosy drivers who pass them from peering inside. It is illegal to tint your windshield or front side windows in New Jersey, but the rear window and rear passenger windows are fair game. It is relatively inexpensive, and can be done for about $500 or less. Less common, but certainly visible on the roadways, are vehicles — mostly trucks — with monster tires and high off the pavement. How high you can raise your car in New Jersey is determined by the weight of the vehicle, to a maximum of eleven inches higher than the factory

ON WHEELS installed it. This is a somewhat pricier modification, costing around $5,000. And as cool as a raised truck may look on the road, you compromise in safety. Consumer Reports warns that larger tires or raising your car decreases stability, even at slow speeds, and affects how the car handles. Other car owners like to remove the manufacturer’s seats and install racing seats. Some of these are comfortable and perfectly okay. But others hinder your driving ability. You must be able to buckle the factory-installed seat belt around any seats you use, and they cannot interfere with operation of air bags. Custom lights on your car can look really sharp and increase the ability of other drivers to see you at night. Many drivers like to install LED lights for visibility and cosmetic appeal. Flashing lights are also popular in some circles. It is illegal in New Jersey to use blue, red, or yellow flashing lights that might imitate an emergency response vehicle. But other shades are legit. Others like to soup up the engine itself by adding a supercharger to increase the pressure of the air intake and help the car go faster. New Jersey has no regulations for modifying engines, but they still must pass emissions inspection. So what are the popular cars for people to customize? Car and Driver recently published a list of the ten best vehicles for modification. Not surprisingly, the muscle cars Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and Ford Mustang are on the list, as is the Jeep Wrangler. But some more inexpensive vehicles, like Volkswagen’s Golf and Beetle are included too. But with the proper guidance, any vehicle can be outfitted to your desires. If you think customizing is for you, go for it. For some drivers, there is no more satisfying feeling than to watch people see your car drive by and simply say “Wow!” n

eave it to a poet, Andrew Barger, to perfectly describe a city in short simple words: “Even the moon was embarrassed by the beauty of Barcelona.” Hugged by 25 miles of spectacular Mediterranean coastline, Barcelona exudes beauty and warmth, literally and figuratively, to all who visit her. Nicknamed the “Paris of Spain,” the city offers major cultural and historical sites as well as many of Antoni Gaudi’s surreal architectural wonders. Like a table full of tasty tapas plates, Barcelona begs to be sampled. So, vamonos! Not Your Typical Park Bench One of the biggest tourist attractions in Barcelona (and mostly free) is the incredible Parc Güell. Designed and built by Gaudí in the early 1900s, it is almost mandatory to stroll through the 30 acre, multilevel, and definitely non-linear grounds designed in Gaudi’s unique style. The park blends gardens with fantasy architecture using columns, terraced gardens, gingerbread-like houses, waves of mosaic walls, and even a dragon-shaped entrance. The view of the city from the highest point in the park is stunning. The grounds also make for a perfect place to chill out with a book, enjoy local musicians, or watch giant bubble vendors create ethereal shapes that float throughout the park. Another Gaudi highlight in Barcelona, Sagrada Familia Basilica, is a stunning piece of Modernism, and then some. Over 140 years ago, Gaudi envisioned a one-of-a-kind church from foundation to ornamentation. Today, the massive and non-traditionally

designed church stands tall with not a single right angle and very few straight lines — and still awaits completion! Gaudi’s vision for his God, who he considered his most patient client, includes seven chapels and 18 steeples — all elaborately detailed with Catholic symbolism presented in an almost sandcastle-like design. Suggestion: Book a 1.5-hour tour to skip the long lines at the entrance. Once you are inside the church, head to the top of one of the many towers to enjoy the views of the city. Small Bites — Barcelona Style When in Barcelona, do like the Catalonians and enjoy tapas — a small appetizer or snack. The origin of tapas comes from the word in Spanish for cover or lid — tapa. Barkeepers back in the day would cover drinks with a small piece of bread or meat to keep away the flies — thus the idea of small bites gave way to a whole new internationally enjoyed cuisine. Tapas are served day and night in bars and cafés throughout Barcelona — with different menus and prices depending on the establishment. Whether hot or cold, tapas are meant to be shareable. A typical tapas table may include a plate of mixed olives and cheese for a cold plate or Hot Chopitos — battered and fried baby squid. Another favorite, Patatas Bravas — small deep-fried potato cubes that you can dip in a garlicky aioli or a spicy tomato sauce. Think of it as the Spanish version of French fries. To accompany your tapas, enjoy an ice-cold glass of Estrella Beer. Brewed in Catalan since 1876, the beer goes perfectly with your small bites. From quaint cafes to elegant dining, Estrella is found almost everywhere in Barcelona. If you are a beer aficionado, sign up for a tour of the historic Old Brewery and learn about Catalonian beer production — and tasting samples, of course. Catalan Shopping Barcelona is most definitely a walking kind of city. Casually stroll as you shop along Passeig de Gracia — the most expensive street in Barcelona. The wide street, treelined and elegant, offers many a designer brand and haute couture. In addition, if you have not had your fill of Gaudi’s surreal architecture, look for several of his buildings on the street including Casa Milà (AKA La Pedrera or "The stone quarry"). If you are into Catalan crafts like pottery, leather goods, designer jewelry, and oils and vinegars, check out the little shops in the quaint Ciutat Vella and Gràcia neighborhoods. For a fun excursion, try your hand at an Espadrille Making class. The artisans in the workshop not only help you create your own espadrilles, but you will also learn how to lace up your roped-soled shoes in several traditional ways.

If you are looking for less high-end shopping and more for souvenirs, Las Ramblas offers many options. The well-known pedestrian street is fully lined with outdoor markets, shops, and cafes. In addition, La Ramblas draws acres of tourists to enjoy elaborately painted human statue performers and musicians. If you are on Las Ramblas, step into the Boqueria Market — worth a visit with its colorful and tasty array of local produce, specialty meats, and other treats. n

LifeStyle Wine

By Michael Bray

HOLIDAY FOOD PAIRINGS Aromas and flavors for the holiday season.

A

s we prepare for the holiday season, I’m reflecting in gratitude on this past year. From the activity and joy of the spring and summer, to the abundance of fall by the shore, to your continued and engaged readership — there are so many reasons to pause and say “thank you”. For those of you who tuned in for my article in the Fall Issue, you’ll recall what I shared about The Right Notes, South Jersey’s fight against multiple sclerosis. On September 22, we celebrated the 10th anniversary of The Right Notes, as well as the beautiful life and legacy of my Mom, Jayne Bray, who was the inspiration for the event. I’m happy to share that the generous support of our community allowed us to raise over $100,000 toward finding a cure for multiple sclerosis, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Looking forward to Thanksgiving and the winter holidays, I anticipate many additional opportunities for gratitude, togetherness, and — of course — good wine. With a full calendar of food-centric occasions on the horizon, I’d like to offer my thoughts on holiday food pairings. The wines listed below offer a range of aromas and flavors that will complement a wide variety of foods, including those traditionally served on a holiday table. Rosé: Domaine Clo La Petite Bete (Loire Valley, France; on sale $13.99) With its bright acidity and round fruit notes, dry rosé is an extremely versatile and food-friendly wine, and the perfect match for your holiday spread. Domaine Clo La Petite Bete Rosé offers vibrant notes of exotic fruits and citrus that will brighten any dish. Its well-integrated acidity will complement fruit-based fare (think cranberry sauce) and offer an excellent counterbalance to creamy dishes (think mashed potatoes, or cream sauces). White: Pierre Sparr Riesling (Alsace, France; $16.99) Riesling is a classic choice for holiday meals, as it is a natural pairing for main courses starring poultry, pork, and fish. The Alsace region (located in eastern France next to Germany and Switzerland) is known for its elegant and flavorful white wines, and Pierre Sparr Riesling is no exception. The nose is vibrant with fruity, floral aromas, and the palate is full-bodied enough

to stand up to lighter meats and root vegetables. Light-bodied Red: Big Table Farm Pinot Noir (Willamette Valley, Oregon; $54.99) When it comes to food-friendly reds, you can’t go wrong with pinot noir. With deeper, darker flavors than most whites and rosés, and a lighter body and softer tannins than more robust reds, Pinot Noir is an ideal complement for a wide array of food. Big Table Farm Pinot Noir delivers with a balanced flavor profile of raspberry, spice, and cocoa, and will pair beautifully with turkey, ham, and roasted vegetables. Full-bodied Red: Sky Vineyards Mt. Veeder Zinfandel (Napa Valley, California; $44.99) While bold reds like Cabernet Sauvignon and Nebbiolo are the perfect partners for certain dishes, their firm tannin structure can overpower more nuanced flavors. If you’re seeking something full-bodied and layered with softer tannins, red zinfandel is for you. One of my favorites of the moment is Sky Vineyards Mt. Veeder Zinfandel, which offers layered notes of mountain fruit, combined with a lightening acidity and balanced tannins. This hearty red will stand up to more robust cuisine, while not overshadowing vegetarian courses and side dishes. When selecting the wines to complement your upcoming holiday menus, the most important rule is to drink what you like. While the structural components of food and wine will interact and create unique flavor experiences, I encourage you to start with wines you know and love, experiment with new pairings, and have fun exploring beyond your comfort zone. I hope this pairing guide offers some helpful guidance this holiday season and beyond. As always, let me know if you have any thoughts or questions — I’d love to hear about your holiday selections! Finally, She Loves Me opens up at the Ritz Theatre Company in downtown Haddon Township on December 2 through 18. She Loves Me is a musical with a book by Joe Masteroff, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and music by Jerry Bock. This musical is an adaptation of the 1937 play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklós László, which also inspired the beloved film You’ve Got Mail starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old-world elegance. Ideal for Christmastime,

We, the audience, get to look inside the heart of this shop and experience its clerks’ heartbreaks and triumphs. It’s an excellent reminder of how, even when the world is moving at an incredibly fast pace, we may only get to interact with people for a moment. They become a part of our story.” For more information on She Loves Me at Ritz Theatre Co., visit ritztheatreco.org/she-loves-me/ n

unflowers exude warmth, summer, and golden. For centuries, poets have described their beauty with words, and artists have painted them on canvas. Over 30 years ago, Gino Iovino, while traveling through his native Italy, noticed miles and miles of sunflowers (girasoles in Italian) blossoming as far as the eye could see. For Iovino, the bright beautiful flowers stretching towards the sun each day and lowering themselves at sunset were mesmerizing. That was the seed, so to speak, that eventually led to the name of the restaurant that he would open in Atlantic City — Girasole. Now in its third decade, Girasole stands tall, proudly serving traditional Italian dishes with a contemporary touch. From appetizers like Polpo — slow-baked bay octopus in a sauce of black olives, fresh tomatoes, and rosemary — to signature pasta — all homemade, Girasole remains an Atlantic City favorite. Iovino reflects on the continuous success of his restaurant, “Girasole remains consistent and passionate about top quality ingredients. We stay on top of changes in this evolving world. Our restaurant takes Old World Tradition on a refreshingly modern journey.” A Family Affair In addition to Girasole’s meticulous attention to culinary quality and detail, you feel the warmth as soon as you step into the restaurant. be to buy premade commercial products. Easy yes, but not what you will get at Girasole. Iovino insists on only homemade pasta — it is more flavorful, fresher, healthier, and better than premade pasta. He feels that his pasta dishes absorb the flavors of the sauce that give each meal a truly original and authentic Italian taste. One of the most popular pasta dishes is the Spaghettini Niri — handmade black, thin spaghetti with jumbo lump crab meat, artichokes, and chardonnay. Another pasta dish that represents Girasole’s unique menu is the Casarecci — homemade twists of pasta tossed in a Tuscan kale pesto, mushrooms, and almonds — made fresh as you order. If you are torn between pasta choices, Girasole offers Pasta Tasting of Three — an easily shareable option that allows you to sample several of Girasole’s awardwinning pastas. Menu Highlights What does Iovino consider a perfect meal at Girasole? For a full experience, he recommends an appetizer, pasta intermezzo, entrée, and dessert. For example, start your meal with the signature Melanzane e Zucchine — a baked eggplant, zucchini Parmesan. As an intermezzo — sample one of the homemade pasta dishes such as the Orechiette — sautéed broccoli rabe and hot Italian sausage over a bed of homemade ear-shaped pasta. For the entrée, Iovino suggests a Girasole favorite — a whole and

Extraordinary Italian Taste salted Branzino filleted tableside. For dessert, a delicious Crocantino — chilled Zabaione custard, caramelized almonds, and dark chocolate chips. In addition to Girasole’s impressive menu options, Iovino also offers individual gourmet pizzas baked to perfection in an artisanal stone-built oven. Select from a dozen of pizza options ranging from the creamy Burrata — mozzarella Pugliese and cherry tomatoes with a balsamic reduction or the Fra Diavolo — tomatoes, long hots, and parmesan. Longtime fan, Sherrie Kendall, considers Girasole her “go-to restaurant.” From appetizer to entrée and then some, Kendall has nothing but praises for one of her favorite Atlantic City restaurants, “Not only was the service friendly and attentive without being intrusive, but the meal was superb — oh so relaxing innovative cocktails, thin-crusted pizza — light and delicious. We shared a fresh salad and a whole Bronzino — moist and to die for.” Keep in mind, at Girasole all food is cooked to order from scratch (not pre-made/ re-heated). So regardless of your menu selection, sit back and savor a cocktail or glass of wine as you await your specially prepared meal. Iovino and his family want you to enjoy the quality of the food and the love they put into each dish. They want every guest to experience Girasole — Extraordinary. Italian. Taste. Buon appetito!

Financial Corner

CRA Financial, L.L.C.

TAX-LOSS HARVESTING

T

his time of year many people start thinking about year-end tax planning. An integral part of tax planning involves the potential for tax-loss harvesting in your taxable portfolio. What we are going to discuss below can only be done in taxable accounts (i.e. individual, joint, UTMA’s, Trusts) and does not apply to IRA or other taxdeferred accounts. Tax-loss harvesting involves taking investments that are worth less than what you paid for them (unrealized losses) and selling them (realized losses). Investment losses can help reduce taxes by offsetting gains and if you offset all of your gains you can deduct an additional $3,000 in capital losses against your ordinary income. By deducting the additional $3,000, an investor in the 37% bracket can save $1,110 in federal taxes. In addition, any realized losses in excess of $3,000 can be carried forward indefinitely to future tax years to offset future capital gains. Therefore, an investor in the 37% bracket who had total unrealized losses of $50,000 in his or her portfolio can recover more than 1/3 of that loss by harvesting now and saving taxes in the future. We believe this is a good strategy to turn something positive from a negative situation. Many investors avoid tax-loss harvesting because they want to avoid selling something at a loss and possibly missing a rebound. We advise our clients to maintain their asset allocation even while tax-loss harvesting. You can do this by simultaneously selling your asset that has an unrealized loss and purchasing a similarly correlated asset to the one just sold. For example, if you have a large-cap US stock fund with a loss, sell it and purchase another large-cap US stock fund with a similar risk and holdings profile. If you

have an individual stock with a large loss, choose a stock in the same industry, sector, or comparable market (i.e. sell Coca-Cola and buy Pepsi). Even with the market sell-off this year, due to three consecutive double-digit return years in the US stock market (2019-2021), most long-term portfolios will have few losses to realize especially if it is a low turnover portfolio. Any stocks or stock funds purchased in the last two years most likely have losses at this point. Two other places investors may find losses in this current environment are international equities and fixed income. International stocks have underperformed U.S. equities for more than a decade. With the incredible rise in interest rates this year, most bonds and bond funds are worth less than what investors paid for them. The Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index is down year to date through September 30 by (14.61%), the largest bond loss in more than 40 years. If you do choose to implement tax-loss harvesting, be sure to keep in mind that tax savings should not undermine your investing goals. Ultimately, a balanced strategy and frequent re-evaluation to ensure that your investments are in line with your goals is the prudent approach.
