PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Good Evening All! Welcome to the New Jersey Subcontractors Association’s 50th Annual Awards Dinner. Tonight we come together to celebrate half a century of recognizing excellence. For over five decades, the New Jersey Subcontractors Association has been at the forefront of promoting the highest standards and fostering strong relationships within the construction industry. As we reflect on the past 50 years, we are reminded of the countless individuals and companies that have been recipients of an NJSA award. Each award recipient has contributed to the advancement of knowledge and the betterment of our industry. However, let us remember that success is never achieved in isolation. It is through collaboration, mentorship, and support that great achievements are realized. It is only fitting that tonight we commemorate our collective journey and honor the outstanding contributions made by not one, but all our members, as each one of you has played an integral role in shaping our industry’s landscape. As part of this evening’s festivities, we will recognize 17 NJSA Safety Awardees for their exceptional jobsite safety records. We also thank you all for your continued support and for being part of our history. May the next 50 years be filled with even greater achievements, stronger bonds, and unwavering dedication to our craft. Once again, I extend my warmest welcome to all of you. More than brushes & ladders, Alpine Painting and Sandblasting Contractors is a fullservice commercial/industrial/shop painting company. Headquartered in Paterson, NJ, Alpine employs more than 100 painters and a full support staff, including administration, operations, project management, estimating, engineering and customer service. Headquartered in Lafayette, NJ, the company is composed of two distinct divisions. The Civil Division focuses on site development and renewable energy projects in the Northeast. The Trenchless Division works nationwide installing underground piping via the horizontal directional drilling and jack and bore methods. Safety is recognized as the single most important aspect of our work, each and every day, and in every task that we perform. Century Electric was founded in 1983 by Owner Neil Vitale, just under 40 years ago. His philosophy then, which still holds true today, is to give the customer the highest quality service and workmanship while exceeding the customers’ expectations.

Over the years the company has grown into a well-established quality electrical contractor performing work throughout NJ. Century Electric is a very diversified electrical contractor performing mainly private work in data centers, health care, life sciences, industrial, commercial, higher education, and service work, as well as doing design builds.

Century has good relationships with Electrical Local Unions #102,164,269,400,456 and are also members. Century is an ardent supporter of NJSA and NECA, as well as other organizations. Century Electric has always placed a strong emphasis on safety, making sure that everyone in the company “buys in”. Century has always provided the right tools and equipment to do a safe job, as well as providing a safe working environment. Century has been the recipient of numerous safety awards over the years, and the company is immensely proud of that. Scott Poquette, recently promoted to President of Century Electric, brings over 40 years’ experience and education to the company. Scott is extremely optimistic about the direction the company is headed. Over the years, Scott has heard customers comment on subcontractors having a strong field staff or a strong office staff, he believes Century has the best of both. In 2010, CNC Construction was certified as a Women Owned Business Enterprise (WBE) in both New Jersey and New York, making it one of the few WBE Certified sitework subcontractors in the region.

Bob received a Master’s of Science Degree in Industrial Safety and Health from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and has achieved the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Instructional Trainer (CIT), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Safety Management Specialist (SMS), Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS) certifications and is an OSHA Special Government Employee (SGE). Bob is an authorized OSHA 500 outreach trainer for Construction Safety Standards. Bob is Past President of the American Society of Safety Professionals-New Jersey Chapter and is recipient of the 2007 Safety Professional of the Year Award. Bob is the immediate past Chairman of the New Jersey State Industrial Safety Committee; He is also serving as Chairman of the Board and safety co-chair of the New Jersey Subcontractors Association and the safety chair of the Construction Roundtable of New Jersey. Bob was recognized recently by the by the Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey (ACCNJ) for its Safety Recognition Program and was honored by the New Jersey State Safety Council for its 2010 Distinguished Service to Safety Award. Bob is a certified Fire Official/Inspector for the State of New Jersey and recently celebrated 44 years as a firefighter/Safety Officer for the Chatham Township Volunteer Fire Department.

ELECTRIC INSTALLATION AND DESIGN, INC. Award Accepted by Tim Callahan, Vice President of Operations

Electrical Installation and Design, Inc. (“EID”) was formed by the late Jack Kennedy, an IBEW Local 102 Union Electrician, as a oneman operation in 1995 and became incorporated in the State of New Jersey in 1997. As the business began to grow, Jack signed his business on with IBEW Local 102, and in March of 1999, EID became a Commercial/Industrial Union Shop with signatory throughout the State of New Jersey. In 2000 Jack’s wife, Ellen Kennedy, came into the business to help with administrative and accounting-related matters. As time went on and EID grew considerably, Ellen then began running the business-end of the company which allowed for Jack to focus on estimating and field operations. This partnership and new structure quickly generated larger accounts and customers such as Becton Dickinson, the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, PSE&G, as well as GCs/CMs such as Cyma Builders and Construction Managers, Epic Management, Inc., HSC Builders and Construction Managers, Vericon Construction Company, Willard Dunham Construction Co., and many more. Between 2003 and 2007 more employees were hired out of the IBEW Local 102 Hall, most of whom are still with EID today. On Jan. 4, 2012, Jack suddenly and unexpectedly passed away, and Ellen decided to continue to run the business on her own; telling the Lawyers and Accountants, she’d give it two years. With the long-time staff behind her, she is still managing the business today in the capacity of President; just under 2 months shy of eight years. The business itself was a Small Business Enterprise, and in 2012 became a Woman Business Enterprise to name just a couple of its Classifications. With this group of well-trained electricians, safety has been embedded into our company culture and operating procedures. Our Electricians are OSHA-30 and NFPA 70E ARC FLASH trained, and proudly represent the highest standards of safety on every job. EID has been the recipient of the NECA Recognition of Achievement in Safety Excellence, and Recognition of Achievement in Zero Injury for consecutive years. We are honored to be receiving this NJSA Safety Award, and will continue to strive to be a top-notch organization on every project, no matter how large or small, where safety comes in; and comes first.

Landmark Fire Protection, Inc., founded in 1982, is a fire protection contractor that has developed into one of the largest fire protection contractors in the state. The corporation, located in Pine Brook, NJ, specializes in design/build projects for the commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, institutional and large residential market. With valuable key office employees and union installers, many of whom have been with the company for a decade or more, Landmark Fire Protection has used its handson management style to maintain and broaden its customer base.

The concern Landmark Fire Protection has for the well being of its employees, as well as a strong commitment to providing a safe working environment, has paved the way to earning the Safety Award presented here tonight and at previous awards dinners. The main thrust of Landmark Fire Protection’s safety policy is the strict enforcement of weekly toolbox talks, monthly visits by their Safety Officer, and constant implementation of the latest developments in safety equipment and procedures. Landmark Fire Protection prides itself in working for a select list of customers consisting of general contractors, construction managers, and owner/users, with repeat business being the majority of the annual volume. Many of the retrofit/renovation contracts that Landmark has been awarded include the work of other trades, such as electrical and general construction, which are subcontracted and performed under Landmark’s supervision and direction. The firm is certified as a WBE contractor by the States of New Jersey and Maryland, Port Authority, NJ Transit, and several major corporations. In 2001, Landmark Fire Protection was the proud recipient of ASA-NJ’s “Subcontractor of the Year” award.

From its inception in 1978, Macedos Construction transformed from a simple family-owned start-up into a leading enterprise in concrete construction, participating in some of the biggest foundation and superstructure projects of the Tri-State area. It was founded over 44 years ago by Jack and Cathleen Macedo and is now 2nd generation-owned and actively managed by their daughter, Sandra Macedo Bilynsky. Macedos specializes in reinforced mid to high-rise concrete work with additional experience in post-tensioning and filigree systems making them unique in the concrete construction industry in New Jersey.

With an employee force of over 100 tradespeople, safety and risk compliance is considered to be one of the biggest priorities of Macedos Construction. With almost 30 years of construction experience, OSHA certifications, and additional training under her belt, Joy von Glueck has been our leader in safety awareness and compliance as the Corporate Risk & Compliance Director of Macedos. Since joining the firm in 2009, Joy has been extremely influential in the success of Macedos with regards to safety, with her primary goal of ultimately ensuring that each employee returns home safe every day, a sentiment shared by management. Macedos’ ability to obtain superior results, while emphasizing safety first, has lead to a client base that includes Gilbane Inc, Austin-VRH, Turner Construction Company, Wm. All safety-related issues come under the direction of Joseph W. Marshall, President. With over 18 years of experience in the glazing industry and the second generation to be at the helm of Midway Glass and Metal, Joseph believes in building strong professional relationships with each member of the Midway family and fostering a work environment where employees are an integral part of the whole. Having completed OSHA 30 construction training, as well as the NYC 62 Hour SST Supervisor Training, Joseph W. Marshall is knowledgeable of best practices in OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926 standards and the NYC Department of Buildings Safety Practices. He has built a culture at Midway which has allowed for strict adherence to safety rules and regulations. He has achieved this through his ability to present knowledge gained to his workers in a relatable and practical manner. This is made clear through the company’s zero incident OSHA 300/300A logs for more than three consecutive years. Midway’s culture of safety is further supported through the development and implementation of a series of programs executed by Mr. Marshall. Weekly tool talk meetings are held to make sure everyone is part of the process, and Job Hazard Analysis sheets are submitted as required. All Midway employees are trained and certified in fall protection, scaffolding, and aerial lift training. As maintaining safety is a continual process, Josephs implements weekly jobsite safety meetings to ensure compliance and address any issues of concern. Joseph is a graduate of Bryant University. Overall, his most important strategy for maintaining an organized and streamlined work environment is to show his employees the respect that he expects for himself. This has in turn led to respect for the work environment and the safety thereof. Whether managing project details and oversight or working hands-on by the side of his employees in the field, Joseph leads by example and holds himself and his employees to the highest standards.

Tore Electric was established in 1968 by Carmine Torella. Since then, we have grown steadily into one of the largest electrical contractors in northern New Jersey, employing on average, over 100 electricians in the field.

Under the leadership of CEO Ray Torella (Carmine’s son), Tore added a fulltime Safety Director to our team. Glenn McCarthy has over 20 years’ experience in electrical safety. His no-nonsense approach, along with his experience and knowledge as an electrical tradesman, has resulted in Tore enjoying one of the lowest EMR’s amongst our peers while, more importantly, getting our workers home safely to their families each day.

Mike Marek has been with Tore Electric for almost 30 years and is a driving force in our safety culture. Under the leadership of both Glenn and Mike, safety practices and protocols are discussed in Tore’s daily huddles and reported on in our daily electronic job logs. Many of our field personnel have gone on to become OSHA certified in Safety. Today, Ray Torella, with over 40 years of experience at Tore, continues to be a hands-on leader looking to innovate and expand. Ray believes strongly in the power of his Tore family and encourages everyone to educate themselves in safety, new technologies and expand their ability to look beyond the obvious. Ray is proud of his entire Tore Electric family and instills the importance of embracing innovation and change along with strategic growth. There have been two female presidents in the history of NJSA … Anne Marie Almasi, Almasi Companies, and Angela Morello Lange, Landmark Fire Protection. Currently, Angela is serving her second term as president.

There have been three McGlone’s that have served as president, and two True’s.

Brothers Keith and Matt Rocca, GAR Equipment have served as president of NJSA.

Fromkin Brothers, Gilbane Building Company, Turner Construction, Joseph A. Natoli, and Torcon, Inc., to name a few, have all been recognized multiple times by NJSA.

There was no dinner in 2020 due to COVID 19, but NJSA still honored 14 NJSA members for their excellence in safety through a virtual ceremony.
