INTRODUCTION

There is no way to put this in a softer way: this past year has been a year of losses. Amidst a global pandemic that hit this nation and our region especially hard, we have lost relatives, colleagues, and friends. Many of us in our community and at our university have been sick, lonely, overworked, bereaved. The entire world can look like a scarier place after realizing an imperceptible virus can turn our ordinary lives upside down and kill more than four million people (and counting). In addition to the pandemic, we have also experienced a lot of things we wish we never had: among them, a resurgence of racial attacks and tensions, an attempt to overthrow American democracy, and increasingly tragic effects of climate change.

Poet,” Steiner wrote: “Has our civilization, by virtue of the inhumanity it has carried out and condoned —we are accomplices to that which leaves us indifferent— forfeited its claims to that indispensable luxury which we call literature? Not for ever, not everywhere, but simply in this time and place, as a city besieged forfeits its claims to the freedom of the winds and the cool of evening outside its walls.”

When looking for an answer to his anguished question, Steiner could have looked at other places far away from the US and Europe, such as Latin America, where literature stopped being an “indispensable luxury” long ago and it has become since then simply indispensable. He should have read Gabriela Mistral, Ernesto Cardenal, or Nicolás Guillén, writers for whom their social and political commitment was always inseparable from their literary activities.

When receiving his Nobel prize, Gabriel García Márquez said: “To oppression, plundering and abandonment, we respond with life. Neither floods nor plagues, famines nor cataclysms, nor even the eternal wars of century upon century, have been able to subdue the persistent advantage of life over death.” And writing literature is part of that struggle against death, not less than having kids, playing

In this context of sociopolitical turmoil and global mourning, one could wonder: What is the value, usefulness, or pertinence of literature? Why do people still write fictional stories or poetry, and is anybody interested in reading that instead of the news? Previous generations have wondered the same thing, as did for example the literary critic George Steiner and others who lived through the Second World War, the Holocaust, and the atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In a famous article entitled “Silence and the

with them, and working for them to have a better life. Because of this, and because compassion can be both a consequence of suffering and a remedy for it, our present issue of “Voces Latinas” contains social poetry inspired by the example of many generations of Spanish and Latin American women and men who questioned, analyzed, criticized, and transformed their societies through the written word.

The third and final section, “Inocencia” (“Innocence”), reminds us of our original beauty and goodness, which is usually lost to growth and trauma, but maybe not forever. Sabrina Mezzina’s “Hermosa niña” bravely addresses the impact of sexual abuse, while trusting the victim to overcome and resignify her trauma. In “Amor maternal,” Yoandra Vázquez Pérez meditates on the changing identity of a son of immigrants, every day a little bit farther from the culture and values of his parents. Caroline Fernandez’s “Ideas de cristal” observes a mother living in poverty and how, through both the deprivations and games of her children, she finds a hope for a better life. Finally, “Los niños del bosque” by Melissa Tudela is both an indictment of socioeconomic limitations and a call to freedom: through the metaphor of “the children in the forest,” Melissa shows the boundaries that surround most people and a way to liberate ourselves while liberating others.

The first section of this issue, “Comunidades” (“Communities”), looks at our society with a critical and constructive eye. Damaris Baquerizo’s “La naturaleza humana” offers an impassioned critique of a society full of abuse, poverty, corruption, and (therefore) death.

That same consumerist society is criticized with humor by Dyana Rivera Barreiro in “El ciudadano consumido.” Genesis Amaro focuses on the absurdities of our education system in “Educación / Education,” while Rosa Martínez’s “31 primaveras” warmly analyzes the role of love and age in different generations.

For millennia, religions have affirmed that real joy and self-realization are only possible through compassion: a human heart can only attain happiness when it is open to others and to the totality of life, including its most painful moments.

Researchers have more recently tested and proven the truth of this idea and many articles have been published during the last year about the importance of empathy, compassion, and connection when dealing with the pain of the present and the uncertainties of the future. I hope these poems that deal with suffering, trauma, and injustice, but that also sing about hope and beauty, help arise that compassion that can lead all of us to healing.

Our second section, “Fronteras” (“Boundaries”), emphasizes the geographical, social, and racial differences that separate people, but also contribute to the construction of their identities. Widnelia M. Avila examines the losses and transformations of Puerto Ricans during their history in “¡Oh, Borinquen querida!”.

Both Rocío Roldán’s “El destino final” and Elizabeth Roche’s “La migración” study the issue of migration, but Rocío focuses on the hopes and trajectory of the immigrant, while Elizabeth pays more attention to the long-term effects of migration on identity and memories.

Ana López’s “Los oprimidos” criticizes white privilege in contrast to the suffering and privations of racial minorities in the US. In a similar vein, Ariadna Troncoso’s “Muñeca negra de papel” extols the courage and hope of Afrodescendants in their struggle for equality and dignity.

Damaris Baquerizo was born 22 years ago in Ecuador, where she lived until she was 8. Damaris later moved to Spain and she lives at the moment in the United States, where she is learning more about her Latin American roots and defining her identity.

Dyana Rivera Barreiro is of Colombian descent. She was born in New Jersey and raised in Puerto Rico, before coming back to New Jersey to build her adult life. A transfer student from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Dyana is currently majoring in Spanish and minoring in General Business. Also, she plans to get a master's degree in Education Administration.

EL CIUDADANO CONSUMIDO Pregunté: ¿Qué es más importante educar a consumistas o educar a ciudadanos? ¡Consumistas, por supuesto!

Respondieron sin dudarlo.

Mis oídos no creían lo que sus bocas decían.

Cuando luego de un rato aquellos continuaron explicando: ¿Quién sabe qué es un buen ciudadano? ¡Ay, mi madre!, exclamé.

La sociedad es un mercado y el ciudadano una especie de dos patas

que por el mundo va andando 12

como si no tuviera alma, afirmando paso a paso este gran pecado.

El pecado de la falta.

Falta de analítica, falta de pensamiento crítico.

Abundancia en ignorancia, abundancia en arrogancia. ¡Falta de respeto!

De respeto por su prójimo pues ya no se sabe el límite de los derechos.

Ciudadanos consumistas, así nos prefieren y no ven que eso no conviene a futuros descendientes.

Ciudadano, no consumes, en esto no te equivoques, es a ti a quien consumen. ¡Ciudadano analítico, despierta!

Se extraña aquel momento

en el que la justicia enfrentabas, enfrentabas de manera firme y sin violencia.

Y ahora te has dejado educar por los que te quieren callar.

Ciudadano consumido, ¡despierta!

Rescatemos esta sociedad.

Genesis Amaro was born in North Bergen and raised in Union City and Jersey City. Her parents are Dominican immigrants that moved to New Jersey in the nineties. Genesis is majoring in Early Childhood Education and Spanish, in hopes of one day teaching the future generations.

EDUCACIÓN Si los niños son el futuro Destinado a aprender y crecer, ¿Por qué hay miedo en sus ojos cuando caminan?

Si las escuelas están destinadas para aprender

Y servir como refugio seguro, ¿Por qué llega la violencia?

If children are meant to find themselves And make mistakes as they go, Why are they forced to fit one mold?

If we truly care about children, Why is the education system filled with rot?

Rosa Martínez was born in the Dominican Republic and she is married and blessed with three beautiful children. She studies Spanish and hopes to graduate in 2022. In her free time, Rosa helps children with special needs and the elderly, a job she does with a lot of love, dedication, and passion. She is also a dog lover and currently has a Chihuahua.

Todavía admiro a la juventud de hoy que con mucha pasión quiere navegar, ellos nadan en mares y en ríos, pero 31 primaveras nunca alcanzarán.

31 primaveras han pasado y aun los problemas con ellos están, ríen y gozan todos los años, 16

Widnelia M. Avila was born in Puerto Rico and she came to the United States at the age of 13. She graduated in 2018 from Hudson County Community College, where she received an associate's degree in Arts. Widnelia is currently enrolled in Spanish and Early Childhood Education at New Jersey City University and she plans to obtain a P-3 Certification.

¡OH, BORINQUEN QUERIDA! ¡Tierra del Altísimo significaba tu nombre, Borinquen querida! nombre que obtuviste de tu primera población nativa De linaje noble, humilde y pasivo fueron los indígenas, los primeros aborígenes que en ti encontraron vida Adoraban a sus dioses y celebraban con felicidad

Rocío Roldán is from Mendoza, Argentina, and she was raised in the United States. She has danced since she was eight years old and she graduated from Hudson County Community College in Liberal Arts. Rocío is currently majoring in Spanish and Elementary Education and she plans to become an interpreter.

Elizabeth Roche was born in Villa Clara, Cuba.

Elizabeth currently attends New Jersey City University, where she will graduate with a Spanish bachelor’s degree.

Ana López is of Dominican descent and was born and raised in Jersey City. She graduated from Hudson County Community College with an associate's degree in Early Childhood Education. Ana is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Spanish and, in the future, she hopes to obtain a Master of Business Administration in organizational leadership.

Ariadna Troncoso was born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where she obtained her degree as a general medicine doctor. After moving to the United States, she obtained a Master of Business Administration degree at Keiser University in Florida. Ariadna loves to dance flamenco and she currently studies at New Jersey City University in order to become a teacher.

MUÑECA NEGRA DE PAPEL Y pasará mucho tiempo y seguirán segregándote, la culpa no es tuya, la culpa es la torpeza de pensamientos de supremacía.

No hay nada más triste que la miseria humana, disfrazada de inteligencia y de mucha elegancia. ¡Oh muñeca negra! No te desanimes: sigue en la lucha y con esperanza.

El camino se vuelve pesado, mientras avanza la ignorancia.

Gritas, reclamas, pero los poderosos son insensibles, son unos canallas.

Sabrina Mezzina was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and raised in Union City, New Jersey. Both her parents are from Italy. Sabrina is majoring in Spanish and she plans to pursue a master’s degree in English as a Second Language and Bilingual Education in the near future.

Yoandra Vázquez Pérez is from Santa Clara, Cuba. She has a degree in Law from the Central University "Marta Abreu" of Las Villas. Yoandra is currently a senior

at New Jersey City University, where she will graduate with a Spanish bachelor’s degree.

AMOR MATERNAL Desde mi cuarto de madre preocupada lo miro crecer, acechado por las adicciones morbosas y sombrías del placer y la honra.

Ya su música no es la mía, ni su idioma, ni su indumentaria, ni el corte de cabello el de su padre, que murió en la mina antes de que viniéramos huyendo del hambre y del desasosiego, atravesando las oscuras galerías que hirieron la virginidad de la selva.

Ahora tenemos hambre, pero de otras cosas.

Ansiamos tanto el ruido de las aguas del río donde lavábamos cada tarde sin techo y sin rejas.

Pero ahora se impone que le exija estudiar, “dejar las malas compañías”, las “juntamentas” de la calle.

Aprovechar el tiempo, evitar, evitar, lograr, lograr, ¡lograr!

Y acogerse al tránsito ordenado de esta vida nueva, más que mía, suya.

Caroline Fernandez was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and raised in Hialeah, Florida. She moved to New Jersey to start a family and fulfill her dreams of becoming a teacher. She attended Hudson County Community College and received an associate’s degree in Elementary/Secondary Education.

Caroline is currently attending NJCU, where she will graduate with a Spanish bachelor’s degree. She plans to become a Spanish teacher in the future.

IDEAS DE CRISTAL Oh Azucena, ¿qué piensas antes de dormir? ¿Qué tristeza hay en ti que ni la mirada dulce de tus tiernos hijos hace que tus problemas desaparezcan?

Ojalá que tus ideas sean de cristal para que en ellas la solución a tus problemas puedas descubrir. ¿Será que de mañana al desayuno llegarás?

¿O en aquella casa de madera el agua ya no ha de filtrar?

Mientras tú lloras por las noches y cada día con más dolor, aquellos niños tu sufrimiento no percibirán.

Aquel padre ausente no aparece a preguntar, si aquellos niños comieron algo al desayuno, al almuerzo o al cenar.

Pero mañana será otro día, ahora ve a dormir que esos niños que allí descansan mañana saldrán a jugar.

Con sus piececitos pisando el lodo, pero listos para divertirse y ricos, porque con su madre nunca nada les impedirá ser felices.

Melissa Tudela was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Quintana Roo, Mexico, where she lived for many years before moving to the United States. Melissa is starting her third year as a Spanish major at New Jersey City University.

LOS NIÑOS DEL BOSQUE Los niños del bosque aprenden a cazar con los brazos atados.

Por siniestros ruidos y maldiciones crecientes, así son guiados.

Nadie lo haría, pero todos tienen que afrontar que de la manera en que viven, si no matas ¡te pueden matar!

No hay otra opción porque sus brazos están atados.

Los niños del bosque no pueden dejar de cazar.

Los preparas para salir del bosque, pero qué puedes hacer para que no se adentren.

Que alguien encuentre a los niños que se han metido en el bosque.

El mundo se vuelve gigante.

Cuando crees que salen, entran en otro más grande.

Esa es la manera en que viven los niños y los adultos del bosque.

No te metas tan adentro que no puedas escapar.

Aquellos que luchan, aprenden también a excavar.

En el bosque todos son iguales: bautizados con odio y hostilidad.

Los que luchan contra monstruos

tienen que perder su humanidad.

Por la espesa arboleda los oyes gritar: —¿Cuál es nuestra responsabilidad? ¡Si no matamos, nos matarán!

Los preparas para salir del bosque porque no pueden continuar: La manera en que viven, los mismos problemas va a causar.

—¿Cuál es nuestra responsabilidad? ¡A los niños del bosque como mínimo sacar!
