Abstract

Abstract: Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the National Parliament House of Bangladesh, stands as a significant architectural masterpiece in Dhaka, designed by the renowned architect Luis I. Kahn. Over the past five decades, advancements in artificial lighting technology have rendered the existing fixtures outdated and incompatible, leading to a loss of architectural character, diminished contrast, and a dull ambiance within the complex. This thesis aims to revitalize the complex's lighting masterplan to restore its iconic status, enhance security measures, activate the public realm, and create a captivating atmosphere during events and festivals.

By conducting a comprehensive survey of the current lighting condition, this research identifies the shortcomings resulting from irregular color temperature mixing, mismatched fixture styles, non-dimmed lighting, and poor aiming. The proposed renovation plan seeks to integrate modern lighting technologies to rejuvenate the complex's aesthetics, ensuring a visually engaging experience for visitors and showcasing the architectural grandeur.

This thesis underscores the significance of preserving the iconic character of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban while considering the complex's security requirements and the activation of public spaces. Lighting symbology will be employed to evoke a sense of national pride and create a vibrant atmosphere during events and festivals. By embracing these objectives, the renovated lighting masterplan will bring new life to the complex, transforming it into a symbol of national heritage and a source of pride for the Bangladeshi people.

Shop Design Induvidual work Academic Studio by- Micheal Rhode, Bipin Rao The project focused on creating a lighting design for a specific volume of space that included a mezzanine floor. The objective was to integrate lighting aspects and architectural elements to support the brand identity. The process involved extensive research on the brand and its identity, followed by ideation of various lighting concepts that could effectively capture and embody the brand's unique essence.

Chronoscape: Where Time Meets Space The Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch's 50th-anniversary celebration retail design aims to honor the brand's pride in its Nasa certification, chronometer status, and the watch's association with speed and time. The concept revolves around the fascinating relationship between space and time.

The retail space is transformed into a captivating environment reminiscent of outer space. Large-scale watch components are suspended in mid-air, creating a floating effect that symbolizes the watch's historic journey to the moon and its connection to the mysteries of the universe. The design plays with scale, numbers, and ratios, highlighting the precision and significance of every second.

Visitors are invited to explore the watch's rich history through interactive displays that showcase its groundbreaking features and role in space exploration. This immersive experience deepens their appreciation for the brand's remarkable achievements.

The anniversary celebration design creates a unique and engaging retail experience that celebrates the enduring legacy of the Omega Speedmaster Moon Watch, captivating customers with its connection to space, time, and the brand's unwavering commitment to excellence.

The design decisions

St. Marienkirche, a Gothic hall church, has graced the cityscape since the late 13th century. Its construction, initiated around 1270, culminated in the early 14th century. The church underwent significant transformations over the years. In the 15th century, a majestic tower was added to its facade, and in 1790, the renowned architect Carl Gotthard Langhans crowned it with a Baroque and Neo-Gothic dome, elevating its splendor.

As visitors step into the church's entrance hall, they are confronted with the mesmerizing Totentanz fresco. Painted circa 1485, the fresco stretches an impressive 22 meters in length and stands 2 meters tall. It depicts a poignant dance of death, where individuals from all walks of life, representing different social classes, partake in a solemn and graceful movement alongside death. The fresco serves as a solemn reminder of life's transient nature.

Etched into the minds of visitors is the resounding message, "Learn that you must die, that you may gain a heart of wisdom," drawn from Psalm 90. This powerful biblical verse invites reflection on mortality and the pursuit of wisdom during our limited time on Earth.

Fresco painting is a technique of applying water-based pigments on freshly plastered surfaces, with ochres and raw sienna being among the earliest pigments used. Light sensitivity varies based on wavelength, with shorter wavelengths having more damage potential.

Damage calculations indicate that warm white LED lights have lower damage potential compared to UV-filtered tungsten halogen lamps.

The color temperature and CRI of an illuminant do not necessarily determine its color rendering capabilities. While some illuminants may have discontinuous spectra, warm or neutral white LED lights pose low risk due to their broad shape and low power blue peak.

Recommended annual exposure for sensitive items is 100,000 lux hours, while moderately sensitive items require 450,000 lux hours.

These factors should be considered in preserving and displaying artworks and artifacts to minimize damage caused by light exposure.

CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) of 2700K, which has a relative damage potential of 0.8-0.9, indicating lower potential for damage.

Lux level set between 80-100 Lux to provide appropriate illumination while minimizing potential damage.

Uniform distribution of light to avoid "hole burning" or uneven lighting that could lead to localized damage.

Temperature and humidity control to create an optimal environment for the preservation of artworks and artifacts.

Daylight simulation with UV and IR filters to provide a natural lighting experience while mitigating the harmful effects of ultraviolet and infrared radiation.

These design decisions aim to strike a balance between creating an aesthetically pleasing lighting environment and ensuring the preservation and protection of sensitive items from potential light damage.

Project Background: St. Hedwig's Cathedral, also known as St. Hedwigs-Kathedrale in German, is a Catholic church located on Bebelplatz in the historic center of Berlin. It was built between 1747 and 1887 under the orders of Frederick the Great, following the plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff in the Baroque style. The cathedral is dedicated to Hedwig of Silesia. Unfortunately, it suffered damage during the Allied bombing in World War II. However, it was restored from 1952 to 1963 in a post-war modernist style as part of the Forum Fridericianum, serving as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Berlin. From 1949 to 1990, St. Hedwig's was located in East Berlin under the control of the East German government. The cathedral closed on September 1, 2018, for major renovations.

Inspiration: The concept for the project is derived from the idea of balance, specifically the balance between light and darkness. Light and darkness are fundamental phenomena as well as symbolic elements. They are experienced in a rhythmic alternation and with different proportional combinations, creating diverse environments and scenarios.

Interpretation: The project aims to explore the concept of proportion and composition within the same structural setup.e.

In this cosmic symphony of artistic expression, the concept draws inspiration from the delicate balance between Light and Darkness. Symbolic and rhythmic, they create diverse environments and scenarios through proportional combinations. Embracing the interplay of chiaroscuro, the portfolio explores the emotional impact, composition, and interpretation of these elemental forces. The profound connection between art and the human experience unfolds as the cosmic brush unveils the essence of existence. With a poetic touch, the portfolio harmonizes light and darkness, transcending the mundane and embracing the mystical unity of their eternal dance.

Soul of Architecture (Winter, during the evening prayer at 18:00) In a winter evening, a gathering takes place for prayer. In this setting, the soul of architecture comes to life. The interplay of light and darkness creates a comfortable and spacious environment for individuals to connect with God. • A priest and monks take the stage, setting the scene for the prayer. A soothing limelight shines upon them, enveloping them in a calming aura.

• The grandeur of the capital rings out, adorned with intricate golden details, casting a spellbinding enchantment over the floating dome.

• As the collective prayer progresses, the light from the lower dome slowly ascends, symbolically connecting with the blessings of the Almighty.

• The church organ plays with a high pitch, filling the space with melodious sounds, while statues of gods stand as silent companions, adding to the spiritual ambiance.

Oil on canvas In my artistic journey, I discovered a passion for oil painting that began as a hobby and evolved into a professional pursuit. Drawing inspiration from cityscapes, urban settings, and the natural world, I explore the interplay of light and its ever-changing qualities in my abstract and abstract-impressionistic artworks. Without any formal training in painting, my work is fueled purely by my passion for capturing the essence of light.

Having a background in architecture, I have collaborated with professionals, teachers, and clients to create artwork that complements and enhances architectural spaces. The response to my paintings has been overwhelmingly positive, encouraging me to pursue my artistic endeavors further.

In 2020, my artwork gained recognition when ten of my paintings were featured on the online platform Contextbd.com. Additionally, the United Nations Bangladesh featured one of my paintings in their 75th-anniversary celebration, and it was later purchased by the former Governor of Bangladesh Bank, with the proceeds donated to support those financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh.

Through my paintings, I strive to capture the essence of light, offering viewers a glimpse into the beauty and emotions that surround us in our everyday lives.
