Joint arthroplasty or joint infection is a surgical procedure which can provide pain relief and increase the mobility of the joints like the hip and the knee. Even though most of the surgeries result in being successful, there is always a chance for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). This condition can make the joint arthroplasty a failure. • Morbid obesity: Obesity is one of the major risk concern which may lead to many other diseases like hypertension, heart disease, diabetes etc. obese patients have more chances of undergoing Joint arthroplasty. They also have an increased risk of PJI • Malnutrition: Malnutrition can alone increase the risk of PJI in patients who have undergone Joint arthroplasty. Age, obesity etc. can also contribute to the poor nutritional state of the patients • Hyperglycemia and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus: Diabetes is one of the most common disorders persisting in the world. Number of diabetic patients undergoing Joint arthroplasty, especially when it comes to the hip and the knee, is at an increasing rate after every year. • Preoperative anemia: This condition, mainly known as less hemoglobin levels in the blood, frequently occurs in 15-33% of patients undergoing Joint arthroplasty. The risk of PJI is higher in anemic patients rather than nonanemic patients according to multivariate analysis • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): Nearly 5 % of people who underwent Joint Arthroscopy have RA. Certain studies have reported RA as the independent risk factor for PJI Some other risk factors can be cardiovascular disorder, chronic renal failure, alcohol abuse, smoking and even depression. Joint Arthroscopy is an elective surgery. Hence it is advised that people who are free from much health complications are suggested to go ahead with surgery. It’s very important to remember that no patient is free of risk or there is no guarantee that infection may not occur.
