University team unearths artifacts during Mount Zion exploration Doctors Shimon Gibson and James Tabor have put in years of work in order to discover parts of Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Hard work and patience has finally paid off for the doctors and their team.

Back in June, a group of students from UNC Charlotte went to Jerusalem for a life time opportunity: to dig with the renowned British-born, Israeli archaeologist and adjunct professor Dr. Shimon Gibson.

Gibson, who was co-directing the project along with Dr. James Tabor, chair of the Department of Religious Studies, and the rest of their team are famous for their excavation of Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Their team did not start digging into Mount Zion until March of 2007.

During this time, UNC Charlotte undertook the excavation process and sponsorship of the project.

However, Mount Zion’s excavations did not start in 2007. The first actual excavation happened in 1977.

It was formulated to happen in a small area near the old city wall of Jerusalem. The excavation was taking place in order to identify the date that the tower was built and situated at the base of the wall. The digging was put to a halt when the underground car-park was scheduled to be built, which never ended up happening.

It was not until the year 2000 that the digging at Mount Zion began again. Two main objectives of the year 2000 digging were to identify the timetable of the different levels at the site as well as record available stratigraphical data on the earlier excavations. These projects were forced to stop as well due to “many reasons” as was stated.

Finally in 2007, the excavation with Gibson, Tabor and the rest of the team began. The same template that the 2000 excavation had ended on kicked off the 2007 excavation.

The main objectives now were to answer questions about the history of the strata represented at the site, from the Iron Age through the Medieval Times.

In five days time the excavation was complete. The findings on site included Second Temple (first century CE) houses that were extremely well preserved, coins, a fragment of a stone vessel, and

a scale weight. Also founded were mosaic floors dating from the Byzantine or Umayyad periods (fifth to eighth centuries CE).

The houses that were found had been filled with artificial leveling, sealing them shut. This was during the time of the construction of the Nea Church in the mid-sixth century CE. Because of this, the houses were well preserved and in amazing shape when dug up by the archaeologists.

These excavations went on from 2007-10. Findings such as pots, coins and other artifacts were continuous.

Over the summer of 2013, Gibson and his team, along with the Levine Scholars from UNC Charlotte, stated that they might have found a Second Temple Period priestly mansion from the Early Roman Period (first century CE). They also discovered finished bathrooms with bathtubs while clearing out the newly found site.

Gibson noted that the bathrooms were a clear sign of wealth and status of the resident. Tabor, stated that he believed there might be significant historical information that had been uncovered, but was cautious on pulling early conclusions on the site.

“If the mansion did belong to the priestly caste, then it immediately connects not just to the elite of Jerusalem, but Jesus himself,” said Tabor. “During this time period, the priestly caste were the families that had Jesus arrested and crucified.

It is important to know more about them and their domestic lives.”

The digs still go on and more is yet to be known of this mystery mansion that was found.

“To say that [Gibson] is a wealth of knowledge is an understatement.

He is the expert,” said Jonathan Wainwright, a Levine Scholar who went to the summer 2013 excavation. “I learned that doing things that you’ve never considered before can be fun. Also, learning about stuff that has no use to you professionally is still neat, especially if it plays at your past.”

Hidden treasures in the Special Collections of J. Murrey Atkins Library JARED GREEN INTERN

Jutting 10 stories into the sky and clearly distinguishing the UNC Charlotte skyline stands the J. Murrey Atkins Library.

The library has an array of places to study including the Library Café Peet’s and group study rooms, as well as small cubicles in the quiet zone. In fact, the 10th floor houses the library’s special collections reading room.

One of the special collections’s librarians is Tricia Kent.

“Most people just come up to show their parents the campus because you can see all of it from this one place; then they stumble upon the reading room out of curiosity,” commented Kent.

of the library was founded in 1973

by Mary and Harry Dalton.

The Daltons were major benefactors of the library, and the library’s 10th floor tower, Dalton Tower, is named in their honor.

The Special Collections Reading Room was opened in 1983. The library’s special collections includes artwork, manuscripts, university archives and a collection of over 500,000 books.

The Special Collections and Reading Room are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and are available to all students to use.

The only requirement to use the special collections material is that an online patron request form be

filled out once each term.

In addition to the reading room on the 10th floor, a study room for students will be coming soon.

It is currently under renovation, but it’s planned to open within the coming year.

Many of the cases in the front of the Special Collections Reading Room house vintage children’s books.

One of the popular novels they have is “The Wizard of Oz.” This is the first book of the “Oz” series written by Frank Baum. The first publication was in 1889.

This week’s senate meeting took place on Thursday, Oct. 18.

President Brady Nails addressed the senators about a retreat. Committee reports included the idea of a Student Government Association (SGA) sponsored event and possibility of a student resource smartphone application.

The Sidewalk Act was also passed and discussed afterward.

Executive Board Planning Retreat

Nails spoke to the senate in regards to talk of a Chancellor-Student Body President Address on campus.

Nails also mentioned that he and other members of the Executive Office are taking a retreat to the mountains Oct. 18 to discuss strategy.

The team will be brainstorming the strategic course that the Student Government will lead students through over for the remainder of the 2013-14 academic year.

Committee Reports

Bridget Ogburu, Chair of Academic Affairs Committee, reflected on the committee’s most recent meeting.

Ogburu stated the committee has discussed public speaking research, an upcoming Town Hall meeting, the ins and outs of managing the bookstore on campus and possibly the production of a Student Resource smartphone application.

Senate Responds to Dean’s Challenge

Sidewalk Act Passed

• Campus Walk Lane, officer observed a vehicle make a traffic violation, and on pulling over the vehicle, discovered that the driver was under the influence and under age 21.

Two weeks ago the Dean of Students challenged the senate “to do something.”

This past week the senate responded to this challenge with its first act of the 2013-14 academic year, other than acts to instate new senators.

Joshua Lamb, Chair of Student Affairs Committee, presented the Sidewalk Act in response to recent complaints to the Student Government Association about the lack of sidewalks on Cameron Boulevard.

The Student Affairs Committee addressed this issue by drawing up a bill that will bring more construction to UNC Charlotte’s campus.

This new construction will add sidewalk along Cameron Boulevard near the Harris Alumni Center.

The act was approved. There is no report on when the construction will begin.

The Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team has been plagued by injuries this season. Despite the injuries, the 49ers remain on top in the East Division of Conference USA

It has been a season of ups and downs for the Charlotte 49ers women’s soccer team.

The 49ers started off the year with a 3-0 record winning all the games at home at Transamerica Field. They were playing well when the first of many key injuries came against the College of Charleston when senior SarahAnn Waugh went down with a leg injury.

offense as she scored one goal and added two assists before her season came to an abrupt end.

Then going into the next game against Davidson, junior forward Jessica Ryan saw her season come to an end.

Ryan had been on fire, scoring four goals in just the three previous games.

Through this part of the season, the 49ers found themselves at 5-3 and traveling down to Florida

to open conference play against Florida International University.

Just when the injuries on the roster could not be any more serious, senior goalkeeper and leader of the 49ers defense Alex Kubrick went down with a leg injury of her own.

Luckily, Kubrick has returned and redshirt sophomore Annika McHenry and redshirt freshman Alex Weaver played well in her absence to keep the 49ers in a good

position in the Conference USA standings.

One positive that can be taken from all the injuries is that all 26 players on the team have been able to see minutes on the field this season.

“I’ve said since day one that we’ll use everybody on our squad,” said Head Coach John Cullen.

“Sometimes when you say that, I think the players will always wonder if that will actually truly be the case, but this season is definitely an example of every player needing to be ready to play.”

This season has also seen position changes as well as the naming of a new captain, Monica Trickett.

Trickett has been playing consistently all year and has started all 15 games for the 49ers.

“I think the emergence of Monica Trickett has been a very big plus for us,” Cullen said of the sophomore leader.

“A year ago she was coming off an ACL injury and we thought she was an excellent player then, but she’s really proved to be not only an excellent player but a consistent player.”

The 49ers attack has been very balanced this year as 21 different players have taken a shot while the defense has put up seven shutouts.

Junior star Amanda Jones has recorded 41 shots thus far this season, sending a total of six to the back of the net.

With the senior leaders like

Waugh and Kubrick missing time, there was a need for leaders to emerge like Trickett.

The freshmen have also played well all season, seeing many minutes in many games.

Every single freshman has played in multiple games and Perri Bonner, Rebecca Beatty and Nicole Anderson have seen minutes in all 15.

This trio has been huge on offense, tallying a combined 37 shots, three goals and three assists.

“As a freshman, and we expect this with every class, there’s good days and there’s tough days. There’s great days and there’s bad days, and I think once they all come through their freshman year, they’ll all be better players for it,” said Cullen.

With that amount of minutes this group has seen, it will be key going into the last three games and into next year to have that experience on the field.

“I’ve seen good progress and good promise in all six of them,” he went on to say.

Despite all the injuries, close games, position changes and the emergence of a new captain, the

49ers have found themselves in first place in the Conference USA East Division with only three games remaining.

The squad has two home games coming up against Marshall and Florida Atlantic before heading to Old Dominion to finish the season.

The squad will look to continue their excellent play at home this season to stay atop the division standings.

The Conference USA tournament will be held in Houston, Texas this season and the 49ers will need everyone from senior leader Kubrick all the way down to the end of the 26-player roster to maintain the balanced offense and defense that has been working this season for the team.

With every player seeing minutes, the 49ers are sure to be one of the most experienced teams heading into the conference tournament if they can keep up the success and punch their ticket to Houston.

If the team continues to spread the offense and play collectively as a back four with Kubrick behind them, the sky is the limit.

49ers impress in Dig Pink match, fall 3-1 to Tulsa LIBBY WEIHSMANN SPORTS EDITOR

The Charlotte 49ers volleyball team (10-12, 0-7) hosted the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes (17-4, 6-0) on Friday, Oct. 18 in the 12th annual Dig Pink match at home inside Halton Arena. Tulsa, the 2012 defending Conference USA tournament champions, was the top-ranked Conference USA team heading into the match.

In the first set, Tulsa was first to strike. The 49ers first point in the set came on a kill from senior Amanda Videmsek.

The 49ers offense appeared much more confident coming off of a loss on the road at Rice. Despite the strong offensive play, the 49ers dropped the first set 25-21.

The team had 10 kills, 17 digs and two total team blocks. Taylor Cannon led the 49ers in kills with four, followed by Videmsek with three. Libero Michelle Hovey led the 49ers with five digs.

Tulsa opened the second set scoring the first three points before the 49ers answered back. The three-point streak the Golden Hurricane’s went on to open the set was the longest lead for either team. It was a close set as the 49ers defense stepped up to make some nearly impossible digs.

The 49ers had four chances to win the set, but it was a kill by Claire Kreuz that gave Charlotte a win in the second set and tie the match 1-1.

Cannon led the 49ers in kills with six followed by Kreuz with four. Hovey led the 49ers in digs with six followed

by Britney Leigh Held with five.

Just as they did in the first two sets, the Golden Hurricanes scored first, but the 49ers then went on a three-point scoring run to get the momentum going. The 49ers struggled with attack errors in the set which led to them falling 25-20 to trail the Golden Hurricanes 2-1 in the match.

and Videmsek each with three.

Hovey led the 49ers in digs with five followed by Videmsek with four.

“I really called the team out this past weekend. Not in a harsh way or anything like that, but we’re underachieving,” said Head Coach Chris Redding.

Tulsa answered first in the fourth and final set. The 49ers’ Cannon picked up a service ace as she continued to dominate offensively for the team. Not long after Sarah McDonald picked up another second service ace in the set. The 49ers eventually fell in the fourth set 25-17 falling 3-1 in the match.

Cannon lead the 49ers in kills with 16 on the night. Videmsek finished the night with 11 kills and 14 digs.

Hovey finished the night with 18 digs.

“I wanted us to play together as a unit, and they definitely did that in the side out aspect of the game,” said Redding.

“A good step forward, but we’re not going to be satisfied. I’m not going going to be satisfied until we turn the corner on that.”

The crowd inside Halton Arena was loud and energetic throughout the night in honor of the Dig Pink match. It was a great opportunity for students and fans to show their support for not only the volleyball team, but in support of breast cancer awareness.

“Our team loved having all those fans supporting us, and we hope that they keep coming out. Don’t give up on us because we’re getting better.

The girls have a big heart, and we’re just going to get better and finish strong in conference.”

The 49ers are now 0-7 in Conference USA and look to pick up a conference win when they host Middle Tennessee at home on Sunday, Oct. 13.

The city of Charlotte boasts many professional sports teams. For UNC Charlotte students, many are unable to attend these professional sporting events because of the rising costs of tickets.

When Mohit Nigam, a sales associate for the Carolina Panthers, was a student at UNC Charlotte, he was the Secretary for Athletic Affairs on the Executive Board of Student Government.

“I was able to do these promotions in part of the mission of bridging the gap between Uptown Charlotte and the University City area,” said Nigam.

As a proud alumnus, Nigam felt the need to find a way to get more student Panthers fans at the games.

Volleyball’s Taylor Cannon recorded 16 kills in Friday’s Dig Pink match against Tulsa. The 16 kills was a matchhigh total and ties her career-high.

The 49ers women’s soccer team picked up a double overtime win and temporarily top the Conference USA East Division standings.

The 49ers men’s soccer team picked up their first conference win of the season when Kentucky scored an own goal, giving the Charlotte team a 1-0 win.

Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams placed in the top 15 at Pre-Nationals in Terry Haute, Ind. on Saturday.

Blue Line Extension on track for 2016, but students still harbor concerns over construction

When thinking about public transportation in Charlotte, what comes to mind?

Confusing routes? Yes. Poorly planned arrival and departure times?

Sure.

An oftentimes dangerous Transportation Center? Yep. Weird “bus people?” Definitely.

But fear not, students, because there is a train coming to town.

Well, OK, it won’t be completed until 2016,

but even for those of us who will have graduated (or dropped out) by then, the Lynx Blue Line Extension will have a major impact on our campus and the surrounding area.

For those of you who are new to the area, the Lynx is Charlotte’s light rail system. The current line runs from Seventh Street in Uptown Charlotte all the way to I-485, paralleling South Boulevard.

When the Blue Line extension is complete, the light rail will reach all the way to UNC Char-

Uptown Transportation Center will take about 22 minutes.

So what does all of this mean for you? Well, according to some students, it’s going to be a major headache.

John Douglas, a new transfer student from Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC), is definitely not looking forward to the construction. “I can’t even begin to imagine what the traffic is going to be like,” Douglas said.

“That side of campus is just going to be one big construction area.”

Workers have also been seen installing retaining walls near businesses like Showmars, so they won’t have to be torn down to make way for the train.

While work on the Blue Line extension is going to make getting to and around campus difficult, the long-term benefits to both the city and the university will make the suffering worthwhile.

For those of you who plan to make Charlotte your home after graduation, the addition of this vital rail link will be transformative for UNC Charlotte and the entire North Tryon corridor.

Before the original Lynx line was built, South Boulevard was a nasty, crime-ridden place, much like North Tryon is today.

But as the train arrived, new condos were built along the tracks, and with condos came restaurants and businesses.

Southend was brought back to life by the sound of a train whistle. The northern spur should have the same effect.

Also, for future 49ers, the availability of safe, speedy and direct travel to and from Uptown’s bars and clubs is projected to dramatically reduce drunk driving.

So as the months go by, and orange is seen in more places on campus than green and gold, have some patience and hope that construction doesn’t go off the rails.

Most of your article refers to the positives of e-cigarettes. Well that’s easy to do when the research on them is in very early studies. There is no consideration for non-smokers who don’t want to put themselves at more risk with a product no one knows if it is “safer” than secondhand smoke off of a cigarette.

As someone who is trained to speak on the subject and advocated for the [university] policy to include hookah, e-cigs and vapors, it was for the betterment of all on campus, not just those who are smokers.

The policy assists all 49ers on campus.

As of right now, e-cigs don’t seem to be on the list of regulated [nicotine replacement therapies (NRTs)] by the FDA. As of the latest on tobacco cessation training, the majority of companies making e-cigs do not want to be FDA regulated.

Thus the e-cig is not considered to be an approved replacement for smoking cigarettes as compared to the patch and the gum/lozenge.

No studies have been done that are peer reviewed and have been validated in comparison to other FDA approved NRTs. Some e-cigs have Propylene Glycol in them. This has stopped one of our students from driving their car because they had a Intoxalock Ignition Interlock Device (i.e. Car Breathalyzer) because it registered them as positive for drinking alcohol.

Robinson Hall’s performance of ‘Othello’ shines LAUREN DOCKERY INTERN

Last week, UNC Charlotte had the pleasure of welcoming the Actors from the London Stage to Robinson Hall.

Students, faculty and the general public squeezed together into the theatre, filling every seat as they patiently awaited what would be a stunning performance of Othello.

This adaptation of Othello was unlike any Shakespeare adaptation that I have ever seen. The biggest surprise occurred when I realized that the play had no actual set.

There were five black chairs arranged at the back of the stage where the actors would sit when they were not currently performing, and a handful of props were housed under their chairs.

Though the lack of an actual set and the minimal number of props were common during Shakespeare’s original performances at The Globe Theatre, in modern day theatre this very rarely occurs. The audience is usually provided with detailed backdrops that help develop the setting of the play.

However, because this rendition of Othello lacked an actual set, the audience was required to employ the use of their imagination.

For myself, having to use my imagination versus waiting for set changes took away a lot of the distractions that waiting would have caused.

When you attend a Shakespeare play you expect a lot, and the troupe of five did not disappoint. Because there were only five actors, they each played multiple roles.

Jude Akuwudike, who starred as Othello, acted as both a clown and a gentleman. Akuwudike did an excellent job convincing the audience of Othello’s anger at Desdemona when he thinks that she has cheated on him with Cassio.

I could feel his emotional connection with Othello’s character during both his scenes of rage and of despair.

Richard Neale, who mainly por-

trayed the role of Iago, stole the show through his interaction with the audience. More often than not he stood or sat at the edge of the stage as he unearthed his plot to end Othello and Desdemona’s marriage with the audience.

Neale used this same tactic even when he played the roles of the Duke and a gentleman, helping me and other audience members to better identify with him.

Jack Whitam, who also played Cassio, amazed most with his representation of Brabantio, Desdemona’s father. Whitam perfectly portrayed the protective father who does not approve of who his daughter is dating in the opening act.

He also played the roles of Lodovico and the officer throughout the play, expertly swapping back and forth between characters.

This adaptation of Othello required the women, Jan Shepherd and Alinka Wright, to act as men during some scenes.

This is a switch from Shakespeare’s day where actors were only men, and those men had to play the role of both men and women.

Shepherd and Wright excelled in portraying their assigned roles of male and female parts.

Overall, this rendition of Othello was a major hit with the audience in Robinson Hall. The performance received multiple rounds of applause and a standing ovation from the entire congregation.

This unique adaptation’s resonation was apparent as audience members buzzed about how wonderful the play was as they waited to exit the theatre.

If there is anything to be learned from the viewing of this adaptation of Othello, it is that the Actors from the London Stage know how to keep their audience’s attention.

If any of these actors return to a stage nearby anytime soon, it would be advisable to check them out. It’s well worth the price of admission.

This Halloween, wow your friends with your DIY skills.

Though this may seem complicated and time-consuming to make, it is well worth it.

The materials are cheap and easy to find.

As college students, we often don’t have a lot of money to spend on costumes. Costumes from Halloween stores range from $30 to $50.

This costume proves there is no need to break your budget to have the perfect and unique Halloween costume.

You can customize the design on the front of the costume to guarantee an original look.

Pencil Ruler Knife/box cutter Scissors One cardboard box 22 ½” x 30” for torso armor piece One metallic silver colored spray paint can One red colored spray paint can Duct Tape A friend

Step One: Grab the torso cardboard piece stand it up vertically.

Draw a circle for your head at the height of the box in the center, making sure that it is large enough for your head.

Once you are comfortable with the placement and size of the circle, cut it out with a knife or scissors. Place

your head through the hole to make sure it is the correct size.

If you need to make adjustments to your headpiece, mark with your pencil and cut accordingly.

Step Two: Put on the poncho-shaped box and have a friend mark your waistline around the box.

Cut off the excess cardboard from below the waistline.

Your friend will also need to make markings on the box for your armholes.

Make the armholes at a comfortable level so they are neither too small nor too large.

Once the arm holes are cut, you should have a tank top shape.

Step Three: After cutting the waistline off, begin bending the box slowly around your torso.

You want to make sure it contours to your body shape.

Be sure that you are still very mobile and if necessary, feel free to cut off more cardboard for your head, neck, arms and waist.

Step Four: Duct tape the side flaps of the torso piece together to seal the poncho into a tank top shape.

Once taped, try wearing the torso piece again to confirm the dimensions one last time and test out the mobility of the armor.

Repeat steps if it does not fit comfortably.

Step Five: If you choose to add shoulder pads to your costume, here would be the

appropriate time to do so.

They are not necessary, but it is recommended to make your armor unique and creative. Try out your own methods for adding these to make your costume your own.

Step Six: Now that you’ve created your torso piece, it’s time to spray paint it.

Go outdoors in a well-ventilated area and place your costume on another piece of cardboard or table with a cover cloth.

Carefully paint the torso armor piece with the metallic silver color one horizontal stroke at a time.

Do this repeatedly until you’ve covered your torso armor in one coat.

Make sure you take your time with this process and don’t overdo the paint.

Use your spray paint sparingly in order to have enough for the other armor pieces.

Once completed, let your armor sit and dry for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Once the stencil is secure, proceed with painting over the stencil without red spray paint, using the same horizontal strokes as the silver color.

When finished, let the armor sit and dry for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Step Seven: The last step is to add the Templar Knights’ cross to the front of the armor.

This step can be skipped if you want a simple knight’s armor, or modified if you would rather paint your own symbol on the armor.
