GAME BREAKDOWN MATT CHAPMAN

ASST. SPORTS EDITOR

The Charlotte 49ers will host the UNC Pembroke Braves at Jerry Richardson Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 12 in the first-ever homecoming football game in school history. The 49ers have been essentially an all or nothing team so far throughout their inaugural season. They've recorded three blowout victories over the Campbell Camels (52-7), Chowan Hawks (47-7) and the Presbyterian Blue Hose (45-21). On the other end of the spectrum, Charlotte has been handed two crushing losses at the hands of the North Carolina Central Eagles (40-13) and the James Madison Dukes (34-7). UNC Pembroke will come in to the game nationally ranked at the division-two level and deservedly so as they enter undefeated with four wins over the Winston-Salem State Rams (25-21), Fayetteville State Broncos (38-24), Shaw Bears (41-20) and Wingate Bulldogs (3810). The 49ers have been a blur on the offensive side of the ball thus far this season as they average about 77 plays per game with the up-tempo system implemented by offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. Charlotte has piled up some impressive numbers with the ball in their possession as they average 445.4 yards per game and put up an average of 32.8 points per contest.

14

The Achilles heel for the 49ers offense this season, especially in their losses, has been their struggles with turning the ball over. Charlotte ranks 114th out of 122 FCS football teams as they've turned the ball over 14 times this season, including seven fumbles to go along with seven interceptions. 49ers redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Johnson, much like the rest of the team, has lacked consistency. When Charlotte wins Johnson puts up jaw-dropping statistics and when they lose he looks like what you'd expect out of a redshirt freshman quarterback playing in his first collegiate season. Johnson has thrown for 1,24o yards while tossing 11 touchdown passes to go along with seven interceptions while completing 65.6 percent of his passing attempts. Johnson has a plethora of weapons at the wide receiver position including slot receiver Austin Duke, and their two starters on the outside; true freshman Trent Bostick and Air Force transfer Mikel Hunter. Redshirt freshman Duke leads the 49ers receivers in almost every statistical category as he has pulled in 26 catches for 291 yards including four touchdown grabs. The Charlotte running game has proven to be difficult for opponents to stop throughout

the 2013 season as they feature the two-headed monster attack of redshirt freshman Alan Barnwell and true freshman Kalif Phillips. Barnwell has received more touches this year carrying the ball 61 times for 285 yards and two touchdowns but Phillips isn't far behind with 55 carries for 280 yards and three scoring runs. The Braves defense will surely have a tough time stopping this high-powered 49ers offensive attack but they just may be up to the challenge. UNC Pembroke has been stout on the defensive side of the ball this season allowing just 18.8 points per game and 319 yards per contest. The Braves have forced nine turnovers on the season, three fumbles and six interceptions, which will definitely be something to watch given the aforementioned Charlotte turnover issues. UNC Pembroke has been led defensively by senior linebacker Fred Williams and junior defensive back LJ Stroman. Williams leads the Braves with 29 total tackles and has also recorded two sacks and forced one fumble on the season. Stroman ranks second on the team in tackles with 25 and also has a team-high two interceptions so far in 2013. As impressive as the 49ers have been on offense, the Braves are equally as good if not more so. UNC Pembroke has averaged an astounding 35.5 points per game this season while racking up 418.2 yards of offense per contest. The Braves do it with both their passing and rushing attacks as they average 293.5 yards through the air and 124.8 on the ground per game. The leader for UNC Pembroke offensively is their senior quarterback Luke Charles. Charles has passed for a total of 1,154 yards this season to go along with 11 touchdown passes and just four interceptions while completing 64.6 percent of his passes. Charles' most impressive game this season came against Fayetteville State when he threw for 401 yards to go along with three touchdowns and zero interceptions. Charles' favorite target at wide receiver this

GOLDRUSH

season has been fellow senior Te'vell Williams who has brought down 27 receptions for 283 yards and two touchdown catches. Charles' go-to man in the redzone early on this year has been 6'3 sophomore standout John Rich who only has 13 catches on the season but he leads all receivers with six touchdown catches through just four games. Much like the 49ers, the Braves also have a double-threat attack at the running back position. Sophomore Tamari White and senior Elliott Powell have split the carries almost evenly this year. Despite those two getting the majority of the carries, the best back for UNC Pembroke this season has been freshman standout Rontonio Stanley. Though Stanley has only carried the ball 16 times this season he's rushed for 170 yards which averages out to a ridiculous 10.6 yards per carry. It will surely be interesting to watch how the Braves explosive offense fairs against an extremely opportunistic 49ers squad on the defensive side of the ball. Charlotte leads all FCS teams in the country as they've forced a total of 19 turnovers so far this season, including ten fumbles and nine interceptions. The 49ers have been led on defense this season by three standout players; former South Carolina Gamecock Martay Mattox, redshirt freshman linebacker Terry Caldwell and former Georgia State star linebacker Mark Hogan. Mattox leads Charlotte with 40 total tackles thus far this season. Caldwell ranks second on the team in tackles with 35 and leads the defense with an astounding 7.5 tackles for a loss of yardage. Hogan, who is the all-time leader in tackles at Georgia State, ranks third amongst 49ers with 28 total tackles and also is tied for the team-high in interceptions as he's picked off two passes already this year. The Braves should expect an electric environment when they enter Jerry Richardson Stadium on Oct. 12 as both 49ers fans and players will most definitely be hungry for a big win in their first-ever homecoming game in program history.
