Dear Friends, As we begin the celebration of the Nine Network’s 60th anniversary, we are excited to announce the public opening of our new Public Media Commons on Saturday, September 13 at 7:00 p.m. This has been—and will continue to be —an amazing collaboration with St. Louis Public Radio and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, in partnership with Grand Center, Inc. and the Sheldon Concert Hall.

Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS, will join us on the eve of the public opening as we honor Nancy and Ken Kranzberg with our 2014 Pioneer Spirit Award and kick off our 60th anniversary celebration in the Public Media Commons. This is an important opportunity for us to recognize Paula Kerger’s innovative leadership of PBS as the most trusted institution in America.

We are extremely grateful to you, our members, for your ongoing support. Some of you have been with us since the beginning, and many of you have been members for decades, encouraging our growth and development. We invite you to share your memories of Nine as we celebrate this milestone in our history.

Public Media Commons Opening

Celebrating the Pioneer Spirit in St. Louis and Nine Network’s 60th Anniversary

ine Network members are invited to join us Saturday, September 13 beginning at 7:00 p.m. when the innovative new Public Media Commons opens to the public between the Nine Network and St. Louis Public Radio on Olive Street.

An open-air media experience for all ages, the 9,000-square-foot Public Media Commons is flanked on two sides by two-story video walls and features a performance stage, four large interactive screens and a performance stage.

The opening evening will include dynamic video demonstrations, interactive experiences, food trucks, entertainment and live music performed

by Sleepy Kitty and The Reverbs. Among the featured videos is a showpiece by filmmaker Frank Popper and the world premiere of Electric Pilgrims: Everyone Is Everywhere, designed as a site-specific multiscreen experience for the opening by Van McElwee, internationally acclaimed video artist and professor at Webster University.

Space for the free opening event is limited and registration is required. Registration for members is on a first-come-first-served basis beginning Monday, September 1 at 10:00 a.m. at PublicMediaCommons. eventbrite.com using code NINE. Members and the public are invited to experience the Public Media Commons at any time—day or night—after the opening.

The Public Media Commons is a collaboration of the Nine Network of Public Media, the University of Missouri-St. Louis and St. Louis Public Radio. The Public Media Commons is managed by the Nine Network and is privately funded by local contributors.

The Public Media Commons was designed by a team from Powers Bowersox Associates Inc. led by Ben Gilmartin, AIA, who previously was a lead designer on the Lincoln Center Promenade. Other elements of the Public Media Commons were designed by Electrosonic, Inc.; Dlandstudio, LLC; Randy Burkett Lighting Design, Inc.; and HDR, Inc. Electrosonic provided audio/visual design and implementation on the Newseum in Washington, D.C., and Millennium Park in Chicago.

Celebrating the Pioneer Spirit The night before the Public Media Commons opens to the public on September 13, the Nine Network will celebrate with a gathering of board members, major donors and community leaders. We are proud to mark the beginning of our 60th anniversary with the opening of an innovative new platform for bringing our community together to share experiences that stimulate the arts and creative thinking.

2014 Pioneer Spirit Award Among the contributors to the Public Media Commons are Ken and Nancy Kranzberg, who are being honored that night with the Nine Network’s 2014 Pioneer Spirit Award. The award recognizes those who elevate our region with their visionary leadership and philanthropy.

Like our founders, Ken and Nancy Kranzberg are innovative, daring, generous and forward-thinking.

They support numerous arts organizations and educational programs that encourage people of all ages to create, succeed and thrive. As contributors to the Public Media Commons, they further demonstrate their enthusiasm for innovation in the arts, and particularly in the Grand Center Arts District, home of the Kranzberg Arts Center.

It is significant that she will be with us to share these important milestones in the Nine Network’s history. Her leadership has inspired the content and values that have made PBS the most trusted institution in America. And, under her leadership, PBS has been a pioneer in developing new platforms and modalities for engaging people of all ages in trusted content.

Nine Network’s 60th Anniversary September 20, 2014, marks our 60th anniversary. And we believe it is an occasion to honor and celebrate the remarkable achievement of our founders by looking to an innovative future.

Our founders believed that the relatively new medium of television could improve learning and stimulate public dialogue for the purpose of strengthening civic life—if it were non-commercial and dedicated to the public good. With no funding, no facility and no programs, they developed what was known nationally as “The St. Louis Plan”—a plan that would become national educational television and ultimately PBS. At 60, we often garner the largest per capita viewing audience in public television, and our commitment to the public good is stronger than ever. We look to our future as champions of the innovative spirit in our region, serving as an incubator of creative thinking and new ideas. We look to a future of community impact as we collaborate with individuals and organizations to achieve positive outcomes for our region in education, health, the environment, science, the economy and the arts. We look to a future of engaging people of all ages in compelling local and national content, now available on four channels and multiple interactive platforms.

Looking Good at 60 September 20 begins the Nine Network’s 60th anniversary year. To commemorate those six decades, Nine is collecting memories.

It all started that Monday evening in 1954 when General Manager Martin Quigley and Washington University Chancellor Arthur Holly Compton greeted viewers and introduced a play about free thought. Did you see that first broadcast? Did you give a dollar to the volunteers who went door to door collecting money to keep Channel 9 on the air? Did you watch Nine’s educational broadcasts in your classroom?

Stay Tuned an A-lister The Nine Network of Public Media’s weekly discussion/public affairs series Stay Tuned won best News Program from the editors of St. Louis Magazine in the publication’s 2014 A-List Awards. The Editors’ Choice award was announced during a surprise visit by St. Louis Magazine staff members to the Nine Network in June.

In describing why Stay Tuned won, editors wrote: “Unlike typical TV debate shows that pit partisans against one another in shouting matches, KETCTV’s Stay Tuned bills itself as a ‘conversation,’ ‘bringing more light— less heat—to the issues that matter.’ … Impressive panels of politicians, academics, and journalists share their perspectives on a specific

American Graduate Day For more than three years, the Nine Network has been leading American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a local and national initiative to help young people achieve high school graduation and future success. American Graduate involves 75 public media organizations and more than 1,000 community partner organizations nationwide— more than 50 in St. Louis alone.

On Saturday, September 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Nine Network will present American Graduate Day, a seven-hour national broadcast to engage the entire country around improving graduation rates.

The broadcast will include celebrity guests, compelling stories from students, information about volunteer opportunities and town hall segments.

A frail, asthmatic young Theodore Roosevelt transforms himself into a vigorous champion of the strenuous life, loses one great love and finds another, leads men into battle and then rises like a rocket to become the youngest president in American history at 42.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, brought up as the pampered only child of adoring parents, follows his older cousin’s career with worshipful fascination and begins to think he might one day follow in his footsteps.

Eleanor Roosevelt, the shy orphaned daughter of Theodore’s alcoholic brother, Elliott, marries Franklin, begins a family and finds personal salvation in building a political life of her own.

The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, the latest film from Ken Burns, intertwines the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The series marks the first time their individual stories have been

woven into a single narrative. The 14-hour documentary airs over seven consecutive nights beginning Sunday, September 14.

“The Roosevelts have played significant roles in other stories we’ve told before, from the National Parks to World War II,” says Burns. “It’s impossible, in fact, to visit many parts of the American experience without encountering their presence. But beyond simply sharing a bloodline or political success, they each shared a passionate belief that America

The Roosevelts follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses

all the history the Roosevelts helped to make—the creation of national parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. But it is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling and personal courage and the conquest of fear.

“In The Roosevelts, Ken delves into these three larger-than-life figures in a way that’s never been done before, exploring not only the characteristics that made them such tremendously influential and strong leaders, but also their interpersonal relationships and human, vulnerable qualities,” says Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS. “It’s a wonderful story and we’re very excited to present it to our viewers.”

is a magician. Here, she completely transformed herself into Eleanor Roosevelt, simply through her voice. It was remarkable to witness. The entire cast delivers what I consider to be some of the finest voice-over work we’ve ever been fortunate enough to present.”

Joining Streep are Paul Giamatti as the voice of Theodore Roosevelt and Edward Herrmann, two-time Emmy Award nominee for his performance as Franklin Roosevelt, as the voice of FDR. Rounding out the cast are Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Philip Bosco, Keith Carradine, Kevin Conway, Ed Harris, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Carl Lumbly, Amy Madigan, Carolyn McCormick, Pamela Reed, Billy Bob Thornton and the late Eli Wallach.

The Roosevelts is written by longtime Burns collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward, who is an authority on Franklin Roosevelt. The author of two biographical volumes, A First-Class Temperament and Before the Trumpet, he is also the editor of Closest Companion, which revealed for the first time Roosevelt’s close friendship with his distant cousin, Daisy Suckley. Ward’s interest in FDR grew in part from the fact that he, like FDR, is a polio survivor.

PBS Arts Fall Festival The 2014 PBS Arts Fall Festival returns in September with 11 weekly programs featuring classic Broadway hits, music from around the country and a theater performance by award-winning actor Nathan Lane.

The festival has become a Friday night fall tradition and underscores the Nine Network’s ongoing commitment to giving audiences a front-row seat

Air Force Vet Still Serves James “Jim” Jeske started volunteering at Nine Network six years ago in hopes that he could help make a strong community program even stronger.

“I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to support public TV and an opportunity to meet people of like interests,” he says.

Throughout his time as a Nine Network volunteer, Jeske has helped out with fundraising drives, participated in community outreach at the Belleville Art Fair, handwritten thank-you notes to Nine members, and packaged and mailed items for Nine contributors. He volunteers at least once a month or whenever he is needed and available.

While volunteering, Jeske has met some of his favorite Nine Network celebrities such as Bill McClellan and Charlie Brennan. However, he says, “The real celebrities are the other volunteers who volunteer many more hours than I do.”

When he’s not volunteering, Jeske works part time as a travel consultant for Global Event Managers. He assists companies in arranging meeting spaces and hotels for business trips and events.

It’s no surprise then that Jeske is an advocate for traveling. A graduate from Saint Louis University’s Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology, Jeske served in the Air Force from January 1968, during the Vietnam War, to July 1995. He says that his time in the Continued on page 12

Nine to Grow On

Sesame Street Jr. Since 1969, when kids and parents first heard the sing-songy opening notes of the Sesame Street theme song, they could count on sitting down to a full hour of education and entertainment from Big Bird, Bert, Ernie, Cookie Monster, Bob, Gordon and Susan. Starting September 1, PBS is adding 30 minutes to each day’s Sesame Street fun.

The usual, hour-long Sesame Street will continue airing at 9:00 a.m.

Monday–Friday. At 2:30 p.m., a bonus half-hour episode will air, a shortened version of the hour-long show that will also air Saturdays and Sundays at 8:00 a.m.

Plus, for the first time, selected full episodes of the 30-minute show will be available for free online at pbskids.org/video, on the PBS Kids Video App and on the PBS Kids Roku channel. PBS Kids reached 11.9 million low-income families last year, many of whom do not have access to cable or satellite TV. Since its debut on PBS in 1969, Sesame Street has won more Emmy Awards than any other show in TV history.

Start Up Starts Season Two This summer St. Louis’ thriving small-business community attracted the attention of the producers of Start Up, a series that profiles the real-life experiences of average Americans who launch their own businesses. In June, producers Gary Bredow and Jenny Feterovich brought Stivers (L) and Bredow between takes. their crew to town to record segments for season two of the series. It returns to Nine PBS on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. beginning September 6.

Episodes featuring St. Louis-area locations begin October 25.

Bredow and Feterovich were so excited by local entrepreneurs with unique and successful business ideas that they extended their shooting schedule in the region by two days. St. Louis was a “must stop,” they agree, adding that they even planned this season’s Midwest-centric episodes around going to St. Louis.

One reason for choosing St. Louis, Bredow says, is because “we knew the level of support that we had from the Nine Network here.” The other reason, he continues, is “the level of support that the community has for entrepreneurship and small businesses has been made known to us on multiple occasions from several different people.”

While in town they visited Strange Donuts and Orbit Pinball Lounge, both in Maplewood, Cleveland Heath restaurant in Edwardsville, and Made for Freedom in Richmond Heights, a clothing company that employs former victims of human trafficking. The Made for Freedom story includes an interview with Ginger Imster of Arch Grants. For the series’ “expert advice” segments, producers also taped an interview with Jim McKelvey, co-founder of Square Inc. Sprinkled throughout local pieces viewers might also notice footage shot on Art Hill, in the University City Loop and at the Arch.

The Singing Revolution Song was the weapon of choice when Estonians sought to free themselves from decades of Soviet occupation.

This documentary reveals how, between 1987 and 1991, hundreds of thousands of Estonians gathered publicly to sing forbidden patriotic songs and share protest speeches, risking their lives to proclaim their desire for independence. While violence and bloodshed was the unfortunate end result in other occupied nations of the U.S.S.R., the revolutionary songs of the Estonians anchored their struggle for freedom, which was ultimately accomplished without the loss of a single life.
