Dear Friends, As you may have heard, the president’s budget has proposed eliminating federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which is responsible for disseminating federal funds to local public television and public radio stations, including the Nine Network.

Without CPB, public media as we know it would cease to function as it should, and there is no viable alternative to the current funding model. The Government Accountability Office found that there is no substitute for federal funding in the provision of these services to everyone, everywhere, every day, and for free. And the American people, by overwhelming margins, support this work and oppose the elimination of the federal funding that makes it possible.

With our many champions across the region, including our members and board of directors, the Nine Network now looks to Congress to respect the clear will of the American people, to honor the long history of bipartisan support for our work, and to continue the federal government’s investment in public media’s essential mission of education, information and civic leadership.

From learning about the past to improving our health and championing our communities and our kids, we have been an integral part of the St. Louis region for 63 years. And, thanks to our supporters, we have a lot to be proud. Take our local productions, for example.

The Nine Network’s local productions enlighten and inspire the people of our region, encouraging participation in civic life. Our local series bring attention to the strengths of the St. Louis region and stimulate discussion and positive action related to our region’s challenges.

In addition, our documentaries and specials bring in-depth understanding and appreciation to some diverse topics.

In June, the Nine Network is proud to air the epic story of the history of the Central West End. Our new one-hour documentary, A Place Worth Saving: The Story of the Central West End, has a premiere screening event, an on-air pledge special, and a broadcast premiere. The documentary is complimented by an archive gallery of oral histories and a lavishly illustrated book.

No one else but the Nine Network could tell the comprehensive history of one of the most well-known and beloved neighborhoods in St. Louis. Using our unique capabilities, we are able to tell the epic story of the Central West End by weaving together first-hand accounts, rare archival photos, and never-before-seen aerial drone footage.

The film chronicles the rise of a neighborhood whose very existence was threatened in the name of urban progress. It examines how lessons from the past can inform the future.

The ability to tell a story of this magnitude demonstrates the kind of work we do best. “We have not done anything like this before,” says Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche in describing the film, which serves as a living history of the sixsquare mile neighborhood. “The story of the Central West End parallels our commitment to the community to inspire positive change and outcomes. The story is instructive to the region and an affirmation that you can, indeed, overcome impossible challenges.”

An online archive gallery of oral histories collected from the making of A Place Worth Saving preserves the epic story of the Central West End and can be used by the community for research at nineNet.org. It includes complete interviews with Dr. William H. Danforth, chancellor emeritus, Washington University in St. Louis, Vincent Schoemehl, Jr., former mayor (19811993), and Francis Slay, former mayor (2001-2017), and many other influential community members.

The book, Renaissance: A History of the Central West End by Candace O’Conner, the film’s creative consultant, includes rare photos and traces the history of the Central West End from the 19th century to the present. It begins with the rural landscape of 1875, the creation of Forest Park, the excitement of the 1904 World’s Fair, and looks at how neighbors banded together in the 1970s to rescue and rebuild the Central West End. Heroes and visionaries Redevelopment efforts of the central corridor were heavily influenced by leaders at Washington University Medical Center, but it was the genius and commitment of Dr. William H. Danforth that made it happen. Danforth believed an institution that had benefited so much from the community over such a long period of time (since 1915) had a responsibility to that community. And so, Washington University made a bold commitment to stay in the Central West End when other hospitals and their entire patient population started heading to West County. “We were citizens of St. Louis. We felt it would be bad for St. Louis if we all decamped to the county,” says Danforth.

To combat the blight, Washington University and its affiliated hospitals agreed to facilitate the redevelopment of the economically depressed neighborhood. What was supposed to be a nine year plan to get the neighborhood up and running spanned 40 years and has surpassed all expectations. It also laid the groundwork for the Cortex Innovation Community (a Nine Network special on Cortex is tentatively scheduled to air in August), one of the country’s premiere innovation hubs and technology districts.

Capturing and sharing stories of St. Louis and the surrounding region is what the Nine Network does best. A film like this

grows naturally from the core mission of the Nine Network—to be engaged in the community. Stories like this give people the tools they need to make intelligent decisions going forward. The film points out that all the relationships, the work, the effort, the successes and the failures are what make St. Louis what it is today—these are the stories worth telling and preserving.

And, the story of the Central West End continues to influence the future of St. Louis. The medical campus is expanding and new businesses and people are moving in to the neighborhood.

The question now is how to take the energy put forth in the redevelopment, the hope and the aspirations of the central corridor, and move it in to neighborhoods north and south.

A Place Worth Saving: The Story of the Central West End, told by the people who were there, is a compelling example of the value of our work in the community.

Nine Brings Acclaimed Filmmakers to Touhill for Screening Acclaimed documentary filmmakers Ken Burns and Lynn Novick come to St. Louis for a preview screening of select clips from their latest project, a 10-part, 18-hour documentary series on the Vietnam War to air in September on Nine PBS. The Nine Network will host Burns, Novick and the public on September 9 for a preview discussion at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Missouri—St. Louis.

“This is a very limited tour for Ken and Lynn to promote their latest PBS documentary series,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “So we’re more than delighted they chose St. Louis as one of the cities to make a stop in.”

Burns and Novick tell the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 100 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, and Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both sides.

“The Vietnam War was a decade of agony that took the lives of more than 58,000 Americans,” Burns says.

“Not since the Civil War have we as a country been so torn apart. There wasn’t an American alive then who wasn’t affected in some way.”

The Q&A session with Burns and Novick will be moderated by Gerald Early, Professor of English, Merle Kling Professor of Modern Letters, Washington University in St. Louis.

Storytime in the Commons Returns Our free storytime series returns this summer in the Public Media Commons, just outside of the Nine Network. Each event will feature a favorite PBS KIDS® character that will be available for photos. Stories will be read and shared on the big outdoor screen. We’ll have crafts, games, and other family activities.

Storytime in the Commons is presented on Saturdays from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

June Indie Lens Pop-Up The Nine Network’s community film series partnership with the Missouri History Museum in June is Real Boy, an intimate story of a family in transition. As 19-year-old Bennett Wallace navigates early sobriety, late adolescence, and the evolution of his gender identity, his mother makes her own transformation from resistance to acceptance of her transgendered son.

Along the way, both mother and son find support in their communities.

In this new living history series, a group of modern day families, couples, and individuals recreate life as their forbearers once lived in London’s East End. Faced with the virtually impossible task of earning enough money to pay

the rent and put food on the table, the participants experience firsthand the tough living and working conditions endured by the millions of urban poor in Victorian Britain.

The Episodes Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. in May.

It’s an eye-opening experience for the participants as they each confront the harsh realities of the past and together lay the groundwork for welfare reform in the 20th century.

The 1860s (May 2) Follow participants as they move into a 1860s tenement made up of sparse rooms, a shared water pump and outdoor privies. They seek to make a living by matchbox making, wood turning and the rag trade.

The 1870s (May 9) Witness a dire economic depression heightened by the arrival of Irish migrants seeking work. As the slum dwellers toil in factories, some of them will not be able to settle their debts.

The 1880s (May 16) Despite high unemployment and intolerable conditions, people flock to London, desperate for work. When upper-class visitors tour the slums, the participants realize how precarious their situation truly is.

The 1890s (May 23) Mass manufacturing and social reform offer a bit of hope for some of the residents, while others are plagued by a water shortage that dashes hopes for a promising laundry business.

The 1900s (May 30) Observe the social changes happening to alleviate the plight of the slum dwellers as the 20th century dawns. A few families prosper, but others continue to face poverty.

Forever Chinatown is the story of 81-year-old, self-taught artist Frank Wong, who has spent the past four decades recreating his fading memories by building extraordinarily detailed miniature models of the San Francisco Chinatown rooms of his youth. This film takes the journey of one individual and maps it to a rapidly changing urban neighborhood from 1940s to present day. A meditation on memory, community, and preserving one's own legacy, Wong’s three-dimensional miniature dioramas become rare portals into a historic neighborhood, and a window to the artist's filtered, romanticized memories and emotional struggles. In his compromise with immortality, Wong announces plans to cremate his exquisite works with him upon his death in order to “live inside them forever” in his afterlife.
