The American Graduate town hall Suspended Futures: The School Discipline Debate brought an engaged audience to the Nine studios on October 28. Though our challenges and opportunities have changed – and will continue to change – we are proud to have remained true to our founders’ vision.

With the final season of Downton Abbey, a Sherlock special and Mercy Street in January, plus ongoing powerhouse series like Frontline, NOVA, American Experience, Nature, Great Performances and top-rated children’s programming, it’s not surprising that PBS viewership surpasses that of many commercial networks.

Our founders were confident that their concept of educational television would be good for communities everywhere, so they decided to promote it nationwide. In fact, their concept became known as “the St. Louis Plan.” Well, the idea caught on! And, as they say, the rest is history. With 350 PBS stations reaching 100 million viewers a year nationwide, and with PBS being ranked the most trusted institution in America for the 12th straight year, we’re proud that our founders’ concept caught on – in St. Louis and across the country.

And I am pleased to report that our Board Chair Maxine Clark, who founded Build-A-Bear Workshop, has been elected to serve as a General Director on the 27-member PBS Board of Directors. We’re very proud to have the Nine Network and the St. Louis region so well represented.

In a similar way, we are seeing our model for community impact take hold across the country, particularly through our national leadership of the American Graduate initiative. One of the key elements of its success is the concept that great things can be achieved when public media organizations work in partnership with each other and with individuals and organizations in their communities.

Our success is a result of your support. We believe we are igniting the spirit of possibility in St. Louis with our compelling content, civic leadership and community impact initiatives. And we are often the most watched public television station in the country. We are stewards of a critical community asset – our public airwaves. We must be prepared to harness rapidly changing technology for the public good. We must effectively serve our region as a nexus for collaboration. We must provide vital learning opportunities for all ages. And we must produce stories about our region that raise awareness and lift spirits.

We’re seeing the power of partnerships in our national collaborations on series like Arts America and SciTech Now, which showcase local stories across the country.

We’re seeing that power locally in weekly series like Stay Tuned and The Domain Tech Report and in our monthly series Night at the Symphony. We saw it during the production of Where the Rivers Run, a documentary that is part of our Water Matters environmental initiative. And we saw it in specials like City of Music, celebrating our region’s great musical heritage, and in Soul of Ferguson, which was a musical testimony to a community’s resilience and courage. We’re also seeing the power of partnerships in our presentations in the Public Media Commons, which is being nationally hailed as a unique public space that is presenting compelling content and bringing the community together for extraordinary shared experiences.

This year we entered the final phase of our first-ever capacity-building campaign – Igniting the Spirit of Possibility. A successful campaign will enable us to continue our community impact work, update our facility and infrastructure, and support our future fund so we can continue to serve the St. Louis region for the next 60 years and more. I look forward to sharing more information with you about the campaign and the vital work the campaign will enable us to accomplish.

Come Home to Downton …

One L ast Time

With loyal fans worldwide calling for more, ‘Downton Abbey’ heads into its sixth and final season. he final season of the blockbuster period drama Downton Abbey has a lot of questions to answer. Will Carson and Mrs. Hughes make it down the aisle? Will Branson find happiness in America? Will Mary snap up the affections of the "snappy chariot" driver? And will Lady Edith ever be happy?

On that last question, at least, Downton writer and creator Julian Fellowes offers a hint, saying, “It just doesn’t go smoothly with her, let’s face it.”

For details, we’ll have to watch season six, starting January 3 on Masterpiece. The premiere launches a bittersweet season in which we say goodbye to a show we've come to love.

Since debuting on PBS in 2011, the series has become the top PBS drama of all time, the most popular series in Masterpiece’s 44-year history, and one of the most-watched dramas on American television — all while earning the most nominations of any international television series in the history of the Primetime Emmy Awards. It even has a float decked in 60,000 roses in the 127th Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. But all good things must come to an end.

The gripping drama centered on an English country estate on the cusp of a vanishing way of life follows the intertwined stories of the Crawley family and their house staff. Season six finds the critically acclaimed ensemble,

including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern and Jim Carter, in the year 1925.

Momentous change threatens the great house, its owners and servants. And past scandals loom.

The farewell season comprises nine episodes, including a twohour finale on March 6 that closes the book on a television legend.

There are whispers that our beloved Downton characters might someday grace the silver screen. “I’d like a movie, I think it would be fun,” Fellowes says.

“But the television is done.”

‘Mercy Street’ ake heart: As Downton Abbey ends, another period drama is about to begin. And it’s one the Washington Business Journal says could be the next Downton Abbey.

Mercy Street is a Civil War medical drama premiering January 17. The sixpart series is the first American drama to air on PBS in more than a decade.

Set in Virginia in 1862, Mercy Street follows the lives of two volunteer nurses on opposite sides of the conflict: Mary Phinney (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a staunch New England abolitionist, and Emma Green (Hannah James), a naive young Confederate belle. The two collide at Mansion House, the Green family’s luxury hotel that has been taken over and transformed into a Union Army hospital in Alexandria, a border town between North and South.

Mercy Street is produced by Hollywood director Ridley Scott (Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) and stars, among others, Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) and Gary Cole (Veep).

Inspired by memoirs and letters from real doctors and nurse volunteers at the hospital, the series is not about battles and glory, but rather the drama and unexpected humor of everyday life behind the front lines.

New ‘Sherlock’ Special t’s elementary, my dear Watson.

Start your New Year in Victorian style with the January 1 premiere of Sherlock: The Abominable Bride, a new 90-minute Sherlock special with several twists.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London.

Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221B Baker Street.

“It's not suddenly going to be a different show,” says co-writer Mark Gatiss. “It’s essentially our Sherlock as if we’d always done it set in 1895. It has the same sensibility. The language is obviously slightly different, but we wanted it to feel as funny and as vivid as our modern-day one.”

The event marks the first time Sherlock will premiere in the United States and the United Kingdom on the same day. Additionally, the premiere can be viewed online simultaneously.

liens from the planet Bortron 7 are poised to invade PBS KIDS. The new out-of-this-world children’s series Ready Jet Go! lands February 15. The half-hour show is designed to help children ages 3-8 learn astronomy and Earth science concepts.

“Ready Jet Go! encourages a love of learning and exploration, broadening kids’ horizons to the outer limits of space and imagination,” says Lesli Rotenberg, general manager of Children’s Media at PBS. “PBS KIDS is excited to offer a new series that expands on kids’ natural interest in science and astronomy.”

Ready Jet Go! takes viewers on a journey into outer space, building on children’s curiosity about science, technology and astronomy. The series follows two neighborhood kids: Sean, who has an all-consuming drive for science facts, and Sydney, who has a passion for science fiction and imagination. They both befriend the new kid on their street, Jet Propulsion, whose family members happen to be aliens from the planet Bortron 7. Together, they explore the solar system and the effects it has on the science of our planet, while learning about friendship and teamwork along the way.

“The PBS KIDS ScratchJr app puts kids in the driver’s seat, where they express themselves through storytelling,” says Sara DeWitt, vice president of PBS KIDS Digital. “While kids are playing with their favorite characters, they are also exploring the basics of coding, an important 21st-century literacy.”

ScratchJr is a collaboration between the DevTech Research Group at the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development in Tufts University’s School of Arts and Sciences, the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company.

The innovative PBS KIDS Party app encourages learning through physical activity. It uses interactive games that involve dancing Moff Band and other movements. The app connects to a Moff Band, a colorful, slap-on smart device worn on the wrist like a bracelet. The band enables kids to sync up to an Apple or Android device and play almost anywhere. It also is playable without the Moff Band, using a mobile or tablet device.

“We are excited to leverage this new tool to help kids stretch their imaginations, flex their creativity skills, and accelerate learning through active game play,” DeWitt says. “PBS KIDS looks for learning opportunities in every new technology, leveraging cutting-edge innovations to help children build key skills,” DeWitt says.

ine’s Emmy Award-winning Science Matters enters the New Year — and its second season — with a new name. SciTech Now will be the new title of Science Matters when the series launches a new season January 13.

“The name change connects our program with other major market public television stations sharing their science and technology stories — all using the SciTech Now title — and to the online and digital assets of the SciTech Now brand,”” says the Nine Network’s Jim Kirchherr, who produces and hosts the series. “The name change also reflects our broader Host Jim Kirchherr coverage of both science and technology.”

The half-hour magazine-style series explores the latest scientific and technological developments, research, innovations and inventions in St. Louis and around the world. Hari Sreenivasan of PBS NewsHour Weekend is a regular contributor to the program.

The cutting-edge series combines St. Louis-based stories with pieces produced by other major market public television stations.

Meet the Board Chad Stiening had Stiening is CEO of Kypha Inc. But his other title, he says, is “daddy to four amazing little girls.”

His role as father, along with his passion for advancing entrepreneurship and innovation in the St. Louis region, spurred him last year to join the Nine Network board of directors, where he serves on the Development Committee.

“It plays a significant role in the life of my four daughters, just like it did in my childhood,” he says of Nine’s children’s programming. “Usually my daughters are controlling the remote, so PBS KIDS dominates in our household.”

As an adult, he says, “I love the specials, like Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies, and I try to catch Frontline and SciTech Now whenever I can. Nine has so much more breadth today, both in programming and community impact.”

So when Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche and Nine board member Harvey A. Harris reached out to Stiening to join the board, he was, well, on board.

“I believe it has a significant positive impact on the community,” Stiening says of the Nine Network. “Nine brings diverse, unbiased and trusted coverage of topics and events that matter to the community. It serves as a catalyst for open discussions about how to make the St. Louis region better. It’s also a place to showcase and celebrate the things that make this community great.”

Stiening, who holds a doctorate in molecular genetics, is co-founder of Kypha, a St. Louis-based startup dedicated to developing tests to help monitor inflammatory and immune disorders.

New on Nine ‘Works in Progress’ he American Graduate documentary Works in Progress is aptly named. The film features five young people tested on various fronts — family, personal and academic — that will impact their futures.

“We want to raise awareness that all kids are worth our attention,” says the film’s director Frank Popper. “We’re going to take people inside the stories of these students.”

American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen is a collaborative effort led nationally and locally by the Nine Network to leverage public media's capabilities on air, online and in the community to help improve youth outcomes from cradle to career.

The film was produced by the Nine Network, Frank Popper Productions Inc. and StoryTrack, a video production agency with offices in St. Louis. Nine’s Senior Vice President of Community Engagement Amy Shaw is the executive in charge of production. StoryTrack CEO Lori Dowd is the film’s producer.

Popper has been involved with several Nine Network productions, including Homeland. The 30-minute documentary will be broadcast by public media stations nationwide.

The students, all from the St. Louis metro area, face serious challenges to graduation and success, including poverty and the presence of family violence and drug abuse.

audience that will care about what happens in their lives,” Shaw says. “It's important that we understand the stories of our young people in order to bolster their success across our region.

It's also great to have the talents of so many great professionals align to support this public media production."

The film features five five-minute stories — one on each of the students.

Popper, who describes the film as a “slice of life,” says though each individual story offers an intimate look at early adulthood, together they weave a larger picture about the struggles youth face and universal stories that resonate with everyone.

Dowd agrees: “These are not unique stories. These personal stories reveal the subtle and important changes taking place as students struggle to create successful lives.”

Beginning last July, Popper and Dowd interviewed more than a dozen students before selecting three boys and two girls to feature in the film.

“These are kids who show promise,” Popper says. “They want to graduate.

They want to have good lives and contribute.”

Eighteen-year-old Michael, a senior at Riverview Gardens High School, works to channel his anger through

choreography on the national stage with his step-dance team. Savannah, 16, a Cleveland NJROTC Academy junior, hopes following in her Marine veteran father’s boots will instill discipline, despite her chaotic background.

But challenges abound. St. Louis Community College student Leon, 18, juggles school and work through 15-hour days that start with a 5:30 a.m. bus ride. Breon, a 14-year-old freshman at Parkway Central High School, struggles with a traumatic past. And Claudia, 18, a Notre Dame High School senior, takes on family and financial responsibilities as the oldest of five siblings.

The filmmakers hope the documentary will help viewers better understand the issues of economic and educational disparity and the lack of opportunity often tied to race and class. By amplifying the voices of youth, families and educators, Works in Progress aims to encourage dialogue and move people to act.

The month of special programming begins January 5 and runs through January 31.

Along the way, it includes more than 30 programs focused on various topics, from homelessness and race to education, immigration, politics and health in the United States and around the globe. As part of the special, an encore of a film with local connections will be featured on the national independent documentary series America Reframed. Dignity Harbor, an award-winning film by St. Louis filmmakers Mike Gualdoni and Zach White, tells the gripping story of a St. Louis homeless encampment on the banks of the Mississippi River. Dignity Harbor airs Tuesday, January 12, at 7 p.m.

‘Eyes on the Prize’ During January and February, when we commemorate the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Black History Month, Nine World is proud to revisit the landmark documentary series Eyes on the Prize. The award-winning 14-part series on the civil rights movement in America first aired on PBS nearly 30 years ago. Complementing the series’ return is a new 30-minute special exploring its importance. Eyes on the Prize Then and Now: World Channel Special re-examines the groundbreaking documentary series from the filmmakers’ perspective and from the viewpoint of civil rights activists then and now. This timely and important special explores the state of civil rights today: how far we’ve come, how far we have to go, and the meaning and significance of the ongoing struggle for equality.
