Dear Friends, We begin 2013 with the sense of achievement our founders must have felt when they saw their vision for Channel 9 take form nearly 60 years ago.

A few years ago, we envisioned an expanded role in our community—a role we believe we were uniquely positioned to take. It was actually our founders’ vision set in a new age.

We believed we could apply our resources in better service to the community, building on the trust we have established over the decades to bring our region together on key issues.

We knew we couldn’t do it alone. But we also knew that when community organizations work together, their collective impact is far greater than any single organization can achieve alone.

Frankly, the work has been challenging. But the results have been compelling. Thousands of St. Louis area residents prevented foreclosure because community nonprofits collaborated with us to connect people at risk to the resources they needed.

And today, we are working with area nonprofits to help young people and families combat conditions that affect the future of our entire region. Our community depends on our collective ability to identify solutions and take effective action just as we are doing with American Graduate, Youth at Risk, Heroin Response, and our immigration initiative.

Yes, we have taken on some big issues. But our community has a big heart and an amazing spirit. We are not willing to accept the status quo.

And we are not willing to foreclose on big ideas.

Our region has many strengths and great potential, particularly in health and healthcare, science and technology, arts and culture, energy and the environment, education and the quality of life in our community. Through our partnerships we have been able to shine a brighter light on our region’s achievements while sparking innovations and addressing critical issues.

We realize that to truly invest in our region means that we must make a long-term commitment—together.

We recently celebrated the philanthropic spirit of Arthur B. Baer with our annual Pioneer Spirit Award. He was not only a philanthropist; he was a futurist. He invested in what would give our community hope, strength and the means to achieve great things for the future.

he Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third thrilling season. The returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Dame Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Elizabeth McGovern, Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Penelope Wilton, Joanne Froggatt, Brendan Coyle and a host of others, joined by Shirley MacLaine (Best Actress Oscar winner for 1983’s Terms of Endearment), who plays Martha Levinson, the very American mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham (McGovern).

Years earlier, Cora rescued Downton Abbey with her American wealth by marrying Robert, Earl of Grantham (Bonneville). Now, New World and Old World are about to clash as Cora’s mother locks horns with Robert’s redoubtable mother, Lady Violet, played

by Maggie Smith.

Among the intertwined storylines of the 18 primary characters populating Downton Abbey, the most central is the one involving Lady Mary (Dockery), the eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, and her distant cousin Matthew Crawley (Stevens), the reluctant heir to the Downton estate. Last season closed with Matthew recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with Lady Mary. Meanwhile, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil (Jessica BrownFindlay), has eloped to Ireland with the political-minded chauffeur, Branson (Allen Leech), and is expecting a child.

A tantalizing glimpse ahead: head housemaid Anna (Froggatt) and valet Bates (Coyle) face new ordeals in their star-crossed marriage. Downton’s

impeccable butler, Carson (Carter), breaks in a new footman, who happens to be the nephew of the scheming lady’s maid O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran).

Following Matthew and Mary’s engagement, Robert sticks to his duty to maintain Downton more firmly than ever—even as other great houses are crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I. Everyone associated with Downton Abbey has been tight-lipped about any more details from season three. In a conversation published in Interview magazine, Dockery said that paparazzi were climbing trees trying to get a glimpse of Lady Mary’s wedding dress as she and Bonneville rode in a carriage with blacked-out windows.

Her only description of it: “The dress is so beautiful, and it may not be what people are expecting.”

Downton Abbey season two was the most-watched Masterpiece series on record. The series has enchanted— and influenced—viewers the world over. An article in Sydney, Australia’s The Telegraph revealed that a British domestic-training agency reported a leap in requests for butlers from wealthy families living as far away as China, seeking to emulate Lord and Lady Grantham. In 2012, the agency placed 430 butlers, four times the number they placed in 2010.

Written and created by Julian Fellowes, seasons one and two of Downton Abbey have together won nine Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe for Best Miniseries. Season three airs over seven Sundays beginning with a two-hour premiere on January 6 and concluding with a 90-minute finale on February 17. Lest any viewer feels down about Downton’s conclusion, take heart from this news: season four is on the horizon.



Nine Networking Backyard Volcanoes When it comes to real estate, the adage is “location, location, location.”

For millions of people in the world, the neighborhood includes an active volcano, which is not usually considered a plus on a seller’s disclosure statement.

Life on Fire, a six-part series beginning January 2 at 9:00 p.m. (repeats Fridays at 3:00 a.m. beginning January 4), shows the struggles encountered by people living next door to something that can spew lava at any moment.

Missouri’s Medicaid Debate The Nine Network tackles one of the most politically contentious—and consequential—public policy issues in recent years, the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and its potential impact on Missourians. The half-hour special, Health, Money and Politics: Missouri’s Medicaid Debate, will

be broadcast Monday, January 28 at 7:00 p.m. on Nine PBS Producers Jim Kirchherr and AnneMarie Berger examine the political debate as well as the potential shortand long-term impact on the state budget, the economy and access to health care. Health care professionals, politicians and citizens weigh in on the question of whether or not Missouri should expand its Medicaid program as called for in the next phase of the law’s implementation.

This special is part of Nine’s ongoing coverage of health issues, which is supported by the non-partisan Regional Health Commission.

The series crisscrosses the globe exploring the plants, animals and people that have adapted to a precarious environment. In Iceland, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano’s 2010 eruption was considered mild, even though it provoked economic chaos by paralyzing a major air traffic network for days. Much more powerful volcanoes in Iceland are ready to wake up. In the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Colombia, Chile

and Italy, volcanologists are asked to anticipate and warn the populations settled at the feet of volcanoes in zones where lava, ash, gas, bombs and avalanches are likely. In Alaska, scientists piece together how one race of salmon survived the sulphurous effects of an eruption 2,000 years ago. In Nicaragua, parakeets nest on cliffs exposed to toxic gases, towns have grown over the oldest lava flows and vegetation struggles to take hold before the next eruption. Like a phoenix, life near volcanoes is always ready to rise again.

An underwater volcano adds to the Tonga archipelago. It created new land surface, but destroyed vegetation and creatures on a nearby island.

Life on Fire explores how living things, including humans, adapt to volcanoes in their midst.

Responding to Heroin In two programs in November— Heroin Response and Stay Tuned—the Nine Network explored the region’s heroin epidemic with the goals of reducing the stigma of heroin addiction, increasing understanding about how the drug lures victims and connecting the community to resources. Nine measured the success of the programs through surveys of in-studio audiences and analysis of social media. The measurements demonstrated a huge impact.

get involved in heroin, 88 percent stated that they better understood how heroin affects their community and a majority of audience members reported an increase in knowledge as to where to go for help.

Stay Tuned realized similar success, with 54 percent of viewers reporting a better understanding of why heroin is a public health issue and 73 percent stating that they learned how to recognize signs of heroin use.

The phone number of Behavioral Health Response (BHR) appeared on screen during the broadcasts. BHR reported that 60 calls were directly attributed to the town hall broadcast.

Approximately 30 of the callers who needed services were identified by BHR as individuals who “would not have reached out that night if not for the program.”

Seacrest Hosts American Idol host Ryan Seacrest will be doing double duty on television in January when that show returns, and Seacrest debuts as host of the third season of Pioneers of Television on Nine PBS. Seacrest narrates four new episodes of Pioneers of Television, which begins Tuesday, January 15 at 7:00 p.m. (it repeats Thursdays at 1:00 a.m. beginning January 17 and Sundays at 7:00 p.m. beginning January 20).

Volunteering Boosts Membership Support Jay Kridel and his wife have been watching Nine since their college days, “even before remotes existed.”

They have been members of the Nine Network so long, he can’t remember when they first joined, but supporting his family’s main source for television programs is important enough that Kridel increased his contribution by becoming a Nine volunteer.

“Volunteering is a way to give more than just direct financial support since every volunteer hour translates into resources that go directly back into the Nine Network. It is a very effective way to multiply your financial support,” he states.

His volunteer career, inspired by the fun he saw volunteers experience during on-air pledge drives, started two years ago when Kridel retired.

As a volunteer, the Kirkwood resident enjoys meeting new people, going behind the scenes at events, feeling that he’s part of “the Nine Network family” and always learning “something new about how much Nine Network is involved in and supports the St. Louis community.” He nineNet.org

likes the variety of tasks he’s tackled and appreciates that he has no trouble fitting Nine into his schedule.

Kridel shares his time generously with other organizations as well. Among his many volunteer roles, he has been a business advisor in the Management Assistance Center of the United Way of Greater St. Louis, a certified tennis official for the USTA, a special events chair for the Friends of the Kirkwood Public Library and a food deliverer for KirkCare, a Kirkwood area food pantry.

Yet many of the changes he wrought deeply troubled the carmaker. Nine to Grow On Saturday Stretch Start your weekend with more energy and fewer aches and pains. Former ballerina Miranda Esmonde-White uses her understanding of movement to create a lowimpact stretching and strengthening fitness program for all ages and fitness levels in Classical Stretch: The Esmonde Technique. The Saturday series begins January 5 at 9:30 a.m.

The trademarked Esmonde Technique is a unique fusion of scientific stretching, ballet, yoga, PNF stretching (a manual resistance technique), tai chi, physiotherapy and chiropractic movements that unlock stiff muscles, leaving the participant with a more flexible, relaxed and strengthened body. Classical Stretch: The Esmonde Technique delivers an effective total-body workout developed more than 10 years ago by Esmonde-White.

“I try very hard to make each show unique, entertaining and educational,” Esmonde-White explains. “I am so aware of how important it is to exercise regularly; I believe it keeps you younger both in mind and in body!”

Each half-hour episode features Esmonde-White, a former National Ballet of Canada dancer, performing her graceful routine in picturesque locations throughout Mexico. These exercises reach deeply into muscles and ligaments not normally worked in the average fitness program, unlocking rigid muscles one by one.

The 30 themed episodes concentrate on either weight loss or pain relief for different body parts. The first programs in January and February work on slenderizing your core, alleviating foot pain, slimming hips and legs, healing feet and calves, strengthening the waist and abdominal muscles, correcting posture, and easing back pain.

Aquatic Kratts The animated alter-egos of animal-loving brothers Chris and Martin Kratt get wet—but not washed up!— in a swimmingly good hour-long special adventure. In Wild Kratts: Lost at Sea (January 21, 4:00 p.m.; repeated January 26, 8:00 a.m.) the brothers, wearing their new Creature Power Suits, get swept up in the jet stream and a sea of plankton while trying to recover their lost shrink ray, and then take on underwater linguistics as they attempt to decode the language of one of the world’s smartest creatures: dolphins. Along the way they explore a coral reef, become buddies with a porcupinefish, and get a language lesson from finned friends. Their amazing animal abilities help them out of several hair-raising scrapes and exciting rescue missions.
