Dear Friends, I’m confident we’re all looking forward to 2021 as a fresh start. We’re embracing a fresh start at Nine with a new brand identity and refreshed Nine PBS Magazine!

We last updated our brand identity more than 10 years ago. You know us as your local PBS station, so we’re combining the strong national brand of PBS with Nine’s local legacy and impact to make clear who we are as an institution. Our new, vibrant blue color provides a fresh look while also complementing PBS’s recently updated logo.

PBS is one of the most iconic brands in the U.S., reaching millions of families every day. It is trusted by more Americans than any other brand.

Through the power of our stories, Nine PBS shares diverse perspectives, explores unfamiliar places, celebrates what unites us, and connects us to new ideas. We are a vital and relevant institution, and we have been for more than 66 years.

The magazine has been redesigned to reflect our new look and feel. The magazine will continue to be your visual guide to Nine PBS programming, but we have introduced new sections like Team Member Spotlight, Happening Now, Beyond Programming, and From the Archives.

Happening Now will provide news about events, specials, and public media. Beyond Programming will focus on Nine PBS’s community impact initiatives, which take innovative approaches to addressing inequalities in education and workforce development. Nine PBS has a rich history. From the Archives will look back at the influential programs and stories we have told since our community license was granted in 1954.

This month From the Archives ties into our feature story celebrating Masterpiece’s 50th anniversary—The First Churchills, the first series to be broadcast on Masterpiece. In January, we are broadcasting and streaming a slate of new Masterpiece programs to commemorate the influential and still wildly popular drama series.

ince their first publication in 1970, the books of James Alfred Wight, published under the pen name James Herriot, have held a special place in people’s hearts. They chronicle the adventures of a young country vet, farmers, and townsfolk.

The books' focus on community and its importance in our lives gives Herriot’s work an enduring power and contemporary resonance that reminds us all that belonging to a community makes us part of something greater than ourselves.

This new adaptation preserves the rich and uplifting spirit, tone, and values of Herriot’s iconic characters and stories, and brings to life his sharply observed, entertaining, and incredibly funny tales of country life in the North of England for a modern audience. The series introduces a new generation to these lifeaffirming stories.

All Creatures Great and Small opens in 1937, when James Herriot, fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, follows his dream to become a vet in the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, one of England’s most beloved and beautiful landscapes. He soon discovers that treating the animals is as much about treating their owners.

At Skeldale House, James gets to know his newly formed dysfunctional family: his chaotic and erratic boss, his wayward brother, and the shrewd Mrs. Hall. When local beauty Helen Alderson attracts James’s attention, he finds another, more enduring, reason to stay in the Dales.

New Series January 10, 2021, marks the 50th anniversary of Masterpiece, the iconic PBS drama series that sparked the U.S.'s infatuation with British television. Renowned for consistently high-quality productions, Masterpiece has amassed an impressive array of awards. Mega hits such as Upstairs Downstairs, Sherlock, and Downton Abbey found pop culture status. Masterpiece also sought out ground-breaking shows such as Prime Suspect and the original House of Cards. But it’s the literary classics, such as Bleak House, Wolf Hall, as well as detective-led mysteries, like Grantchester, that have consistently drawn an audience of millions each week to the series.

While celebrating five decades of award-winning television, Masterpiece unveils more unforgettable dramas in January 2021 that you won’t want to miss.

Elizabeth Is Missing › January 3, 8 pm Glenda Jackson won a coveted BAFTA award for her role as a woman in the grip of dementia, searching for her missing friend. The Guardian describes her performance as “compelling, unsentimental and altogether magnificent.”

Miss Scarlet & the Duke › January 17, 7 pm Kate Phillips stars in a six-part mystery as the headstrong, first-ever female detective in Victorian London. Stuart Martin (Jamestown) plays her childhood friend, professional colleague, and potential love interest, Scotland Yard Detective Inspector William Wellington, aka, the Duke.

The Long Song › January 31, 9 pm

The Long Song is a tale of hope and endurance based on the bestselling novel by Andrea Levy.

This three-part miniseries based on Andrea Levy’s award-winning novel about the end of slavery in Jamaica follows July, an indomitable, young slave who works on a sugarcane plantation with her detestable mistress. Their lives change with the arrival of new overseer, Robert Goodwin (Jack Lowden, Dunkirk). “A beautiful, moving, horrifying adaptation of Levy’s unsimple tale,” says The Guardian.

We're Evolving!

We last updated our logo more than 10 years ago. Since then, we have evolved as a media organization, as reflected in the timeline of logos.

We have evolved in other ways as well.

We literally wrote the guidebook on public media’s community engagement.

We start by listening to our partners and community members to determine the community priorities our content should address. We then create content around those priorities to increase understanding. We strive to be more inclusive in our storytelling because everyone’s voice is important. We have built capacity for production and distribution of digital content, including social media and streaming.

We undertook the process of rebranding, including refreshing our logo, messaging, and visual elements, because we want our brand to represent who we are as an organization—today, at this very moment. We are hopeful for the future and as passionate as ever about the importance of education and working together to make our communities stronger. Our iconic red number 9 will continue to see limited use, when appropriate, as our legacy mark.

Whether sharing diverse perspectives, exploring unfamiliar places, or connecting to new people, we hope Nine PBS moves you to be part of the larger St. Louis family and to continue shaping it for the better, as we grow and change together.

The Black Artists’ Group of St. Louis: Creation Equals Movement

The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song

The Black Artists’ Group formed in the late 1960s as an arts collective, devoted to raising Black consciousness, battling social injustice, and performance art. Although its life was brief, several members have gone on to impressive careers as experimental jazz players. Locally, the group’s spirit lives on in the musicians who cut their chops learning to play in BAG’s community arts classes.

Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. takes viewers on a journey through the rich and complex history of the Black Church to reveal how this uniquely American institution has influenced nearly every chapter of the Black American story. Explore the Church’s profound impact on the evolution of American culture and history, and how it continues to animate black identity today.

Kindred Spirits: Artists Hilda Wilkinson Brown and Lilian Thomas Burwell Sunday, February 21, 11:30 pm This documentary explores the unique relationship between an African American aunt and niece who became accomplished artists and educators despite the hardships of the Great Depression and the inequities of racial segregation.

On Easter Sunday 1939, contralto Marian Anderson stepped up to a microphone in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Inscribed on the walls of the monument behind her were the words “all men are created equal.”

Barred from performing in Constitution Hall because of her race, Anderson would sing for the American people in the open air. The film interweaves Anderson’s rich life story with this landmark moment in history.

In 1968, America’s first Black variety show, SOUL!, hosted

by Ellis Haizlip, premiered on public television. The pioneering series ran for six years, celebrated Black artistry, community, and culture, but was also a platform for political expression. Mr. SOUL! includes participants’ recollections and archival footage, highlighting a turning point in representation whose impact continues to resonate to this day.

A Baseball Legacy: Fans Remember the St. Louis Browns

At the 2020 Mid-America Emmy® virtual awards program in November, Nine PBS producer Kara Vaninger was honored with an Emmy for the special, A Baseball Legacy: Fans Remember the St. Louis Browns. Senior editor Brian Holder, postproduction and color, graphic designer Allie Bronsky, titles and graphics, and associate producer Brooke Butler also played roles in the production’s success. Nine received four other 2020 Emmy® nominations (at right) from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Mid-America Chapter.

The film weaves personal stories of fans and former players of St. Louis’s other beloved major league baseball team, which played in the city between 1902 and 1953.

The First Churchills on Masterpiece Sparks Infatuation with British TV

The First Churchills was the first production broadcast on Masterpiece. The BBC series from 1969 chronicles the life of John Churchill, First Duke of Marlborough, and his wife, Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough. The series is based on the Marlboroughs' famous descendant Winston Churchill's account of the life of his ancestor, the Duke.

Nine PBS aired it on Sundays, beginning January 10, 1971. Susan Hampshire (above) plays the duchess.

The 83-year-old English actress is known for her many television and film roles. A three-time Emmy Award winner, she won for The Forsyte Saga in 1970, The First Churchills in 1971, and Vanity Fair in 1973.

Hampshire received feature treatment (“The Three Faces of Susan Hampshire”) in the January 1971 issue of Kaleidoscope, Nine PBS's program guide at the time.

The series presented the lives of John and Sarah Churchill from their meeting in 1673 until a time shortly after the death of Queen Anne in 1714. It illustrated much of the context of contemporary English politics.

Like many BBC series of the era, it was made on a low budget, with sound-studio sets, and generally avoided battle and crowd scenes because they were unable to stage them in a convincing manner.

Nine PBS’s community impact initiatives take an innovative approach to addressing inequalities in education and workforce development by leveraging our unique media assets and network of trusted partners for greater collective impact, from cradle to career.

Bridging the Digital Divide At the beginning of the pandemic, one in three children in the St. Louis region had limited access to the digital devices or reliable internet necessary for remote learning (Common Sense, 2020). Nine PBS has been a trusted convener in helping community partners bridge this digital divide. In April, we pioneered the on-air distance classroom, Teaching in Room 9, which has garnered a devoted audience of 41,000 kids ages 2–11 who have viewed the show over 700,000 times—the equivalent of 28,000 classrooms.

To deepen this impact, Nine PBS has worked with 24 community partners to connect 6,571 vulnerable families with the following education resources:

4,525 Learning Kits with printed PBS KIDS® education and activity materials, the Nine PBS learning guide, school supplies, and directions for at-home learning

2,047 PBS KIDS Playtime Pads with educational videos and games for use with or without internet access One such partner was Saint Louis Public Schools. In November, Nine PBS coordinated the distribution of resources for 900 preschool children in the district, made possible in part by funding through the Missouri CARES Act. Moving forward, Nine PBS is working with partners to train educators in implementing PBS LearningMedia and Playtime Pads in their curriculum for long-term impact.

Living St. Louis Special on Race and Racism When we saw civil unrest and racism building, once again this summer, across our country and in our region, Nine PBS clearly understood the importance of our role as a convener around this difficult conversation.

To continue this conversation, the special will be incorporated into future professional development as a response to a call from educators for instruction on engaging children in discussions of race and racism.

The Living St. Louis Special: Kids, Race, and Racism, presented by PNC, was a local companion program to the national program, PBS KIDS Talk About: Race and Racism.

The Living St. Louis special featured local children and parents modeling ways to talk about racial identity and anti-Black racism. Through interviews with experts Dr. Kira Hudson Banks of Raising Equity and Maggie Klonsky of We Stories, the special also stressed how important it is for children and parents to build a more equitable society.

Edcamp “Unconference”

Workforce Development Initiative

Nine’s third annual PBS KIDS Edcamp, generously sponsored by PNC, connected educators and caregivers with key PBS KIDS media and curriculum to promote early learning. This opportunity was offered at no cost to attendees and remains accessible to those working in low-income communities.

From remote learning to job losses to essential workers, the coronavirus pandemic has impacted St. Louis’s workforce landscape in dramatic ways. Nine PBS’s workforce development initiative has evolved to continue to empower our region economically.

Due to the pandemic, our PBS KIDS Edcamp was held virtually on October 17 for educators, administrators, and partners who collectively serve 825 high-need children from birth through age eight. In attendance were educators from East St. Louis 189, Rockwood, Saint Louis Public Schools, and University City school districts as well as private and informal early education centers.

Our 2020 Edcamp achieved the following outcomes:

One key change is that Nine PBS has increased the target audience of our workforce content beyond youth entering the workforce to also include:

›N ewly unemployed workers who lost their jobs because of COVID-19

› Employed St. Louisans looking to change careers for greater financial stability Nine PBS has also taken on leadership of the Regional Youth Employment Coalition, a group of more than 35 community organizations united around greater youth employability and diversified talent pipelines. Together, these organizations reach 56,000 young people each year—a level of sector collaboration previously unseen in our region.
