Dear Friends, Just as this issue of Nine Magazine was going to press, I was named the new President and CEO of Nine Network. I’m so proud to be the first woman to lead the station in our 65-year history, and to build on Nine’s strong foundation.

I’m fortunate to work with the dedicated team at Nine, our extraordinary board of directors, and the amazing talent in the public media industry. To lead the public television station that I grew up watching, in the community that raised me, is an honor greater than words can express. I’m grateful for what I learned from my mentor, Jack Galmiche. We both believed that Nine can, and will, play an essential role in reshaping St. Louis’ future. You’ll hear more about this in the May/June issue of Nine Magazine.

Our work is guided by the needs and aspirations of our community. We are an organization of, by, and for all people in our community. Our work will be led by three key goals. Nine Network will play an essential role in St. Louis being seen as vital, healthy, safe, and thriving. We will strive for continued financial stability. We will be a healthy and happy workplace—one of St. Louis’ best. In short, we will remain the beloved public media organization that you know and trust, and an industry leader well-positioned for our ever-changing media landscape and country.

Sometimes it takes a generation or two removed from an architectural style to appreciate it. Such is the case of midcentury modern. Mid-century modern is a style of design, from roughly the 1930s through the mid–1960s, characterized by clean lines, organic and streamlined forms, and lack of embellishment. It reached is height of popularity after World War II, where it was used in residential structures, with the goal of bringing modernism into America's post-war suburbs.

For Mid-Century Modern in St. Louis writer/producer Kara Vaninger, the story of mid-century modern architecture isn’t just about buildings and artistic vision, it’s about a hopeful time when a new consciousness about how our lives could change for the better was taking hold.

The modernist movement was born of a changing world. The world had been through two World Wars and veterans were seeking a new way of life. “Modernism promised a break from formality...and helped the middle class gain a foothold,” says Vaninger. nineNet.org

Nowhere was that more evident than in the St. Louis suburbs. Modernist design was viewed as a democratizing style and it naturally appealed to Americans. Modernism represented progress and a break from tradition.

Ralph and Mary Jane Fournier not only designed modernist homes in St. Louis, they built entire neighborhoods. The hundreds of homes in Chesterfield, Crestwood, Creve Coeur, Kirkwood, and Des Peres built in the years after World War II are fine examples of the mid-century modern residential architecture style. They were modular, so they were easy to erect, and purposefully built to obstruct unsightly views, take advantage of natural light, and have minimal impact on their natural, parklike settings.

Mansion House, with views of the Gateway Arch, is one of St. Louis’ first examples of the steel and glass, International Style of architecture.

Many synagogues and churches in St. Louis were also built in the modernist style during this time to forge their own identities and distinguish themselves from Christian churches.

But the “modern” philosophy had downsides, too. Even before WWII, 30 city blocks near the riverfront were cleared in the name of progress; Victorian architecture was destroyed and an African American neighborhood displaced. The land eventually became the site for the Gateway National Park.

St. Louis becomes hotbed for modernism The human story of the history of this built environment in St. Louis interweaves World War II and Japanese internment camps.

Eero Saarinen’s winning entry for the Jefferson Memorial was a big moment for the modernist movement. It signaled that classical forms of architecture were no longer the only option and progressive ideas were welcome.

“WWII was a catalyst for a lot of what happened,” says Vaninger. Famous European architects and teachers of the Bauhaus and International styles of architecture were fleeing the Nazis for the freedom of the U.S. Returning veterans on the GI Bill were entering schools like the School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis, which became a hotbed of modernist architecture.

On dedicating the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on May 25, 1968, Vice President Hubert Humphrey remarked, “Let the Gateway Arch stand, then, as a symbol of America's determination to have beauty with utility…quality with quantity…and humanity with progress. …From now on, St. Louis will be ‘living up to the Arch.’''

Young Japanese Americans were given the opportunity to enter schools in the Midwest and East Coast to avoid internment camps. Dramatically, Gyo Obata joined the student body at Washington University the night before his family, living in California, was sent to a prison camp. Obata went on to design the McDonnell Planetarium, GROW Pavilion at the Saint Louis Science Center and the Saint Louis Abbey and Priory School.

By the late 1960s and 70s, modern architecture and design was becoming “normative, moderate, even conservative,” says Michael Allen, academic researcher, historian, teacher at Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis.

Many modernist structures were overlooked for preservation, despite being more than 60 years old, and have been torn down. “What I realized through all of the interviews was how much modern architecture and thought affected our city,” says Vaninger.

Now, a new generation has taken the mantle for preserving and telling the stories of mid-century modern architecture in St. Louis.

The Passing of a Giant in Journalism PBS NewsHour cofounder Jim Lehrer, who served as anchor for 36 years before retiring in 2011, was a giant in journalism. Known for his tenacity and dedication to simply delivering the news, he died January 23, at the age of 85.

Lehrer reported the news with a clear sense of purpose and integrity.

As an anchor of several iterations of the NewsHour, Lehrer reported the news with a clear sense of purpose and integrity, even as the world of media changed around him.

Judy Woodruff, anchor and managing editor of PBS NewsHour, said he was a mentor to her. “I’ve looked up to him as the standard for fair, probing and thoughtful journalism,” she said.

Robert Costa of Washington Week said on Twitter, “I will miss him, particularly the love of country and politics he brought to everything he did.”

Lehrer and his journalism partner Robert MacNeil’s approach to reporting the news became known as “MacNeil-Lehrer style of journalism.” Their approach helped lay the foundation for modern public media reporting.

USPS Issues Gwen Ifill Black Heritage Stamp The 43rd stamp in the United States Postal Service’s Black Heritage series honors Gwen Ifill, one of the nation’s most esteemed journalists. Issued January 30, the stamp art features a photo of Ifill taken in 2008 by photographer Robert Severi.

Ifill joined PBS in 1999 as the senior political correspondent for The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and moderator and managing editor of Washington Week—the first woman and first African American to moderate a major television newsanalysis show. In 2013, she became co-anchor of PBS NewsHour, part of the first all-female team to anchor a national nightly news program. Ifill died in 2016.

She holds a special place in the hearts of St. Louisans. She graciously visited with Nine supporters on many occasions and frequently collaborated with Nine on important initiatives.

She hosted a national town hall meeting in St. Louis on President Obama’s first 100 days in office, she helped launch American Graduate with a national Teacher Town Hall, and she hosted America after Ferguson, a national town hall that provided a forum for community conversations.

Galmiche Inducted into the Media Hall of Fame Nine’s late president and CEO, Jack Galmiche, is one of 14 new honorees that will be inducted into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame, an initiative of the St. Louis Media History Foundation. Galmiche was a native St. Louisan and returned to his hometown to take the reins of the Nine Network in November 2006, after serving as Chief Operating Officer of Oregon Public Broadcasting in Portland.

Galmiche, who died in April 2019, was recognized for expanding Nine's programming and championing the public's engagement with the station.

Through his efforts, Nine became a network of multiple media platforms, expanding into digital platforms and community engagement, which is emulated by public media organizations around the country.

“It’s an honor for the Nine Network to have Jack in the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame. Jack was a true visionary, always challenging the status quo.

He left an indelible imprint on public media and on St. Louis through his inspired leadership,” said Amy Shaw, Nine’s president and CEO. The ceremony is set for March 21 at The Last Hotel, 1501 Washington Avenue, St. Louis.

Project Echo: A Democracy of Knowledge A documentary about one of the most innovative and far-reaching health initiatives began in 2003 at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine to meet the challenge of an epidemic of hepatitis C, an epidemic caused by heroin addiction. One rural New Mexico county had the highest per capita opiate overdose death rate in the country.

Project Echo trained primary care clinicians to treat hepatitis C and opiate addiction in their own communities, rather than refer them for distant and costly specialty care in Albuquerque. The successful model is now being used to treat more than 70 different chronic diseases and conditions around the world.
