Dear Friends, We are in the home stretch of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign to build the Nine Network’s capacity for the future. I use the term “home stretch” for several reasons.

The term originated in horseracing: the straight portions of the tracks being called the stretches; and the last one being the “home stretch.” But, as you know, the term was also adopted by baseball to refer to the run from third base to home plate.

For us, the operative word is “home.” It has special meaning to us in our campaign and at this time in our history. We have always been a home team. We were the first communitylicensed educational television station. We were the first station to have a base of home town member support. Our staff, volunteers and board have always been focused on what they could do to serve our community. And our vision and mission are all about the place we call home.

Now, as we enter the home stretch of our capacity-building campaign, we are also preparing to celebrate an important milestone in our history—our 60th birthday! The campaign and our birthday have everything to do with one another and to our sense of what home means to us.

We believe we have made a significant contribution to our region over the six decades since our founding in 1954. But in some ways we feel as though we’re just getting started. Over the years we gained the

capacity to serve our region in ways that were not even imagined when we were founded.

We have entered a new era in public media, and we want to make sure that the Nine Network of Public Media has the capacity to continue to lead the way. We are proud to be leading local and national initiatives focused on community impact in areas of critical need, like education, health care and sustainability, as well as areas of distinct strength, like entrepreneurship and the arts.

Our capacity-building campaign might sound complex, but it is really very simple: We need to build the capacity to meet the future in a strong position. I encourage you to make a contribution beyond your member support. We invite you to visit the station at any time, but beginning this summer we will add campaign donors to the video wall in our lobby, and you might want to see your name there. Those who contribute $1,000 or more to the campaign will also be invited to our Pioneer Spirit Award dinner this fall.

The Constitution Public radio’s Peter Sagal hits the road on a motorcycle to scrutinize America’s most revered—and misunderstood—document.

“If you really think about it, the Constitution is all around us, all the time. And yet we don’t really understand it, and we certainly don’t know what it says, but we like to pretend that we know what it means.”

“If you really stop and think about it, the Constitution is all around us all the time,” says Sagal. “And though many of us don’t really understand the document, that has never stopped us from arguing about what it means.”

That idea bubbled up from the mind of director Stephen Ives during a 24-state road trip to shoot the new series CONSTITUTION USA With Peter Sagal.

“Tackling a topic as important as the Constitution, and doing it in a way that is not only educational, but entertaining as well, is the essence of what PBS stands for,” says Beth Hoppe, chief programming executive and general manager, general audience programming at PBS. “At any moment, anyone can tune in to a local PBS station and find relevant content that in some way relates to what’s going on in the world.”

The four-week series goes on a fast-paced, surprising journey across the nation to examine the 4,418 words— and 27 amendments—that made America. The series coincides with the 225th anniversary of the ratification of the Constitution.

Peter Sagal, host of NPR’s popular comedy news quiz Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, travels cross-country—from Tyler, Texas, to Missoula, Montana; from Cranston, Rhode Island, to Berkeley, California—on a customized red, white and blue Harley-Davidson to find out what the Constitution means in the 21st century, how it unites us as a nation and how it has nearly torn us apart.

As expected, Sagal interviews lawyers, activists, law professors and Constitutional scholars. “But the people who’ve really been interesting,” he adds, “are the people whose lives have been directly affected, for good or for ill, by the Constitution.” Sagal talks with ordinary Americans who are struggling with issues of affirmative action, same-sex marriage, voting rights, the role of government and equal protection.

“There is one thing that sets us apart from most other nations in the world and that is our Constitution,” says Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, whom Sagal interviews in the series. “It serves every American every day. No citizen can be denied due process of law or equal protection under our laws. We are truly blessed.”

At a time when polls indicate that only 38 percent of Americans can name all three branches of U.S. government (2011 survey by The Annenberg Public Policy Center), CONSTITUTION USA sets out to illuminate, with style and humor, this remarkably misunderstood document. “On my radio show, it’s mainly jokes,” says Sagal. “It’s fun to try to bring that approach—a slightly less serious approach—to serious topics.”

In the first episode, A More Perfect Union, Sagal explores the Constitution’s most striking and innovative feature: its resilient brand of federalism. The framers created a strong national government while preserving much of the power and independence of the states. This delicate balance of power, seemingly hard-wired for disagreement and conflict, has served America well for more than two centuries. But it still sparks controversy today over medical marijuana, gun control and the Affordable Care Act. Ask Americans what the Constitution’s most important feature is and most will say it’s the guarantees of liberty enshrined in the Bill of Rights. In episode two, It’s a Free Country, Sagal explores the history of the Bill of Rights and addresses several stories ripped from the headlines involving freedom of speech, freedom of religion and right to privacy.

Episode three, Created Equal, points out that the high ideals of the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” didn’t make it into the Constitution in 1787. It took three-quarters of a century, and a bloody civil war, before the 14th Amendment of 1868 made equality a constitutional right and gave the federal government the power to enforce it. Today, it is being used to fight for same-sex marriage, voting rights, affirmative action and immigration reform.

In the final episode, Built to Last?, Sagal travels to Iceland, where after the country’s economic collapse, leaders decided to create a new constitution, looking to the U.S. Constitution for inspiration. This prompts Sagal to

consider why our own founding document has lasted more than 225 years. He looks at the systems that have kept the Constitution healthy—amendments, judicial interpretation, checks and balances—and also at the political forces that threaten to undermine the framers’ vision: excessive partisanship leading to gridlock, money in politics and gerrymandering.

When Sagal asks writer P.J. O’Rourke how he feels about the Constitution, he responds, “Amazed admiration.”

But it’s hard not to think of constant contentiousness in Congress and across the country when O’Rourke continues: “The whole process of the United States becoming the United States is just startling. If 13 different colonies [that] don’t like each other managed to create this new idea of nation... [it’s] a brilliant, brilliant thing that we did.”

Ives, the show’s director, says it simply: “This document is our way of being one people.”

Nine Networking Wainwright in Top Ten It’s on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s a National Historic Landmark, and now St. Louis’ Wainwright Building is one of the 10 buildings that changed America. The distinctive terra cotta-red structure, designed

by Louis Sullivan, was selected by a panel of historians and architects from across the country for inclusion in the upcoming documentary 10 Buildings That Changed America. The hour-long special airs on Nine PBS May 12 at 9:00 p.m. (it’s rebroadcast May 13 at 9:00 p.m., May 14 and 15 at 3:00 a.m., and May 31 at 8:00 p.m.).

10 Buildings That Changed America highlights first-of-their-kind buildings, from Virginia to Los Angeles. For instance the Wainwright, says historian Tim Samuelson, “taught the skyscraper to soar.” Other buildings included in the documentary are Dulles International Airport in Chantilly, Virginia, the first airport in the world created expressly for jets; Highland Park Ford Plant in Highland Park, Michigan, which revolutionized industrial architecture; and Southdale Center in Edina, Minnesota, America’s first fully enclosed, indoor regional shopping mall.

Protess and Baer were enthusiastic about exploring the Wainwright and curious about other examples of noteworthy architecture elsewhere in the city. Between takes Baer was only too happy to point out some of the building’s ingenious features designed by architect Sullivan.

“St. Louis can boast of a unique entrepreneurial environment,” said Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche. “We are in a position, much like in the 19th century, that is ripe for innovation and growth. With the Ignite Innovation initiative, we want to increase awareness of the region’s resources and help strengthen the entrepreneurship ecosystem.”

On April 9, Nine broadcast a live town hall that brought together entrepreneurs, community members and business professionals to talk about how the ingenuity and risktaking inherent in entrepreneurs can benefit the region. By combining the wisdom, experience and caring of the Gatesworth residents with the energy, openness and passion of students from Cardinal Ritter College Prep, the Intergenerational Storytelling Project was born. The two generations have met several times at the Nine Network to discuss why kids drop out of school, the lack of support systems for students, peer pressure, adult role models, self confidence, why it’s OK to fail and the importance of education. Said one Gatesworth resident afterward, “[These] teenagers are real adults and I’m honored to be with them.”

In April, they all met again, this time in pairs: one Gatesworth resident teamed with one Cardinal Ritter student. The young people recorded the seniors on video cameras to gather their ideas on solutions to the dropout crisis. For men and women in their 70s, 80s and 90s, that represents a lot of lifetime experience to share.

Now the students are editing the footage into short videos that will be shown at the Gatesworth and Cardinal Ritter in the coming months.

Nine Network Producer Honored Nine Network producer Anne-Marie Berger was one of 25 people nationwide selected to attend the 2013 CPB/PBS Producers Academy Workshop held at WGBH/Boston in April. More than 165 people applied to attend the intensive, week-long training designed to “encourage a diverse and talented group of producers to create new and greater programming achievements in public broadcasting.” Her selection for the academy was based on her experience, goals and recommendations from industry professionals.

consequences for several years. He tells his family’s personal story in an intimate documentary he shot himself called Moving With Grace. The Nine Network presents the broadcast premiere of the film on Tuesday, May 7 at 7:00 p.m. (repeated Sunday, May 12 at 6:00 p.m.).

Victor and Grace Phillips moved their family from Texas City, Texas, to Ballwin, Missouri, in 1965 for Vic’s job with Monsanto. Their three children— Vic Jr., daughter Minta and Stone—all attended Parkway schools, where Grace also worked teaching mostly kindergarten at three elementary schools.

Vic and Grace lived in the house they built in Ballwin’s Claymont subdivision for 42 years, long after their kids left home to establish their own lives.

Says Stone, “We didn’t always agree about when or whether to do it. I remember wishing I had captured some of that process on tape, because that struggle is one many families are engaged with right now ... These are tough decisions ... What’s best for them?

What’s best for the adult children? The answers are not always clear.”

In June 2011, the family moved Vic and Grace, now aged 94 and 90, to a senior living facility in Greensboro, North Carolina, near daughter Minta, a physician. Stone captured on tape events surrounding the move himself.

“In part, it’s a labor of love for my parents.

In part, it’s an effort to share our personal story with other families who are going through this and let them know they are not alone,” he says.

His father liked the film, “despite his natural aversion to being in the spotlight.” And his mom “thanked me for making the film and asked if I thought she looked old.”

Moving With Grace, states Phillips, “is as real as it gets. Personal. Truthful.

And, I hope, useful. But that will be for viewers to decide.”

Despite one-third of the newspaper staff losing their homes and the death of their page designer, the Globe rolled the presses on the night of the storm only one hour late. Reporters made it to the newsroom not knowing if their friends, family members and colleagues survived. Nearly all of the carriers showed up to deliver the newspaper in the early morning hours.

Sustainable Neighborhoods Competition The 79 distinct—and unique— neighborhoods that make up the city of St. Louis are often thought of as the “Soul of the City.” Now, they will be an important part of the multifaceted City of St. Louis Sustainability Plan, a long-term initiative focused on social, economic and environmental sustainability.

The city’s Sustainable Neighborhoods Competition, opening May 6, invites neighborhoods to submit proposals for projects that will encourage sustainability in areas such as recycling, walking, public transportation, water conservation, alternative energy and access to healthy foods. Up to eight winners will receive grants of up to $5,000 to implement their projects

Nine to Grow On National Geographic Bee 2013 Since 1989, thousands of schools and millions of students have participated in the National Geographic Bee, an entertaining and challenging

test of knowledge. Each year, it is estimated that nearly 5 million students participate in the Bee, representing the 50 states, District of Columbia, Atlantic territories, Pacific territories and Department of Defense Dependents Schools.

After the individual states select their local winners, these 54 fourth- to eighth-graders vie for the Bee crown, the top prize of a $25,000 college scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos aboard the National Geographic Endeavour and lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

In the beginning stages, the questions posed are simple enough for maybe even an adult to answer: What state has a climate suitable for growing citrus fruits, California or Maine?

Which country has the world’s largest Muslim population, Indonesia or Mexico? The North Atlantic current brings warm waters from the tropics to the west coast of which continent?

(The answers are California, Indonesia and Europe.)
