CONDITIONS OF SALE: Held subject to the rules and regulations of the Livestock Auctioneers Association General Conditions of Sale.

VETERINARY INSPECTION: For buyers convenience, a Veterinary Inspection will be carried out on all animals entered for the sale. The Veterinary Officer will examine for general health and genetic defects particularly teeth, eyes, testicles and warts. Any animal found with a genetic fault, disease or disorder will be REJECTED. All cattle entered for the Sale will have their identification marks examined. Any marks found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible marks will be REJECTED from the Sale, Vendors are therefore urged in their own interest to examine the ear tags of sale cattle before the animal(s) leave the farm, so that faulty marks can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures.

All Bulls entered for the Sale, must be adequately trained to lead by halter and must be paraded for inspection unless exempted by the Stewards. Evidence of faults of temperament, vices, etc, may lead to disqualification.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

INSURANCE: A representative of the Auctioneers Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Limousin Cattle Society, Tel. 02476 696500).

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Any purchaser who is a member of the British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) must return the pedigree certificate to the BLCS office and request a transfer of ownership. All transfer fees will be paid by the vendor SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price.

All pedigree animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the auction ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE. Major Reduction of the CALOGALE HERD The CALOGALE herd was established in 2010 with the purchase of Lourie Dazzle (Red Ladies Derby Reserve Female Champion), Baileys Countess, Trueman Florence and Goldies Glorious.

Numbers have grown significantly over the years and now with family commitments and alternative business interests taking priority, we have taken the difficult decision to significantly reduce numbers to a manageable level. Over the next twelve months we will sell approximately twenty females right from the heart of our small herd. Our six entries for this sale include cows and heifers from some of our most proven and prolific bloodlines.

Our focus has always been to breed females of the highest quality and, until now, our policy has been to retain the best females for breeding within the herd. Our two current stock bulls (Bernish Memphis and Meadowrig Pedro) were selected with strong female lines in mind and we are absolutely delighted with the progeny from both bulls to date.

Herd highlights in the show ring include winning the RWAS Interbreed Exhibitor Bred Group of Three Championship in 2018, RWAS Male Champion and Reserve Overall Champion in 2019, Fitzhugh Pairs Reserve Interbreed Champion 2019, RWAS Junior Female Champion and RWAS Females of the Future Pairs Interbreed Championship in 2022.

Sale ring highlights to date include winning two Senior Male Championships in Carlisle in 2019 and 2022, Calogale Ninja and Calogale Oxide selling for 9,000gns and 12,000gns in 2019, Calogale Righteous ,Calogale Slimshadey and Calogale Skye making 10,500gns, 8000gns and 8000gns in 2022; and our first Meadowrig Pedro Son, Calogale Sykes selling for 11,000gns in Carlisle earlier this year.

Other achievements include winning numerous first prize plaques in the annual South Wales and Mid West Herd Competition and Stars of the Future Competition. The Calogale Herd has consistently won its category in the annual herd competition over a number of years and we were awarded the Best Overall Herd in 2021.

We wish all prospective purchasers the very best of luck and we genuinely believe the females available will go on to breed exceptionally well.

Herd Heath - The Calogale herd has been a member of the HiHealth Herdcare Cattle Health Scheme (CHECS) since 2013. The most recent health check was completed in December 2022.

- Johne’s risk level 1 since 2013 - BVD accredited free since 2016 - We have never had a case of TB on the farm and all animals heave been pre-movement tested prior to the sale. Our last whole herd test was completed in December 2022.

HOMEBYRES JELOSSIE is a huge cow and was purchased at the Homebyres dispersal sale for 7800gns where auctioneer James Little described her as his pick of the yard. She is a complete outcross, a double F94L gene carrier and has an abundance of milk (Milk EBV in the Top 1% of the Breed). She is a tremendously fertile cow and has been flushed successfully a number of times with 34 embryos being retained in storage. Jelossie’s calf that was purchased at-foot (Homebyres Pelossie) was sold privately for £7,000 and her most recent calf is a tremendous Meadowrig Pedro son that will feature in our 2023 show team. Jelossie is sold in-calf to Meadowrig Pedro who’s progeny to date have sold to 30,000gns, 18,000gns and 11,000gns; Jelossie will make a tremendous brood cow in any herd.

This female has been flushed 2 times, 30 embryos have been collected of which 29 remain frozen.

Animals with two copies of this gene (ie F94L/F94L) exhibit an increase in muscling (by up to 19%) with no associated increased in calving difficulty, lowered fertility or longevity and by far the majority of animals in the breed carry this gene. Heterozygous animals (those with one copy of the gene) also exhibit these characteristics but not to the same degree.

NT821

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie nt821/nt821) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depths, reduced fat depths and large, rounded rump and thighs. However, unlike F94L, animals with two copies may also have slightly heavier birth weights bringing with it the potential for more difficult calvings, If animals are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calvings.

Q204X

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie Q204X/Q204X) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit larger birth weight and, if females, slightly reduced milking ability. Animals that are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/Q204X) will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by larger birth weights and reduced milking ability.

Two further variants of Myostatin exist in the population but are relatively uncommon in their occurrence. Known as nt419 and E291X, their effects are similar to nt821 and Q204X respectively.

Using Myostatin information An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance.

A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.

3 Genetic Colour 3.

Colour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles. One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene, the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.) “Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes.

“Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant.

“Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene.

“Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).

4 Genetics for Horned/Polled Status 4.

A bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant).

A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned).

A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves.

5 Estimated Breeding Values and Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs & GEBVs) EBVs & GEBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average. a) In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart... a ✓ Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are. ✓ Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are. b) Accuracy Values (Acc%) are expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV, GEBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate values are less likely to change over time. b c) The numeric EBV & GEBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark which is updated annually.

Herd Health at British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Collective Sales Introduction Herd health rules were introduced by the BLCS at nominated premier Collective Society Sales and these are now in place at all premier BLCS Collective Sales (Stirling February & October; Carlisle February, May, October & December; Brecon May & November).

The principal aim is to standardise herd health declarations and information presented in order to provide both members and customers alike with clear, accurate herd health information at the point of sale and within the given sale catalogue. BLCS Herd Health Rules have two principal elements: Part 1. Herds selling at the premier Collective Society Sales have to be members of, and adhering to, the terms of a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme. At a minimum, this must include a whole herd test for Johne’s disease.

Part 2. All animals male and female, including calves at foot, presented at the premier Collective Society Sales be EITHER from a BVD Accredited Herd within a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme OR to have been BVD tested virus free. All animals forward will be required to be BVD vaccinated prior to sale with an approved vaccine. Pregnant animals must have had testing and vaccination completed prior to service. Vaccination of calves at foot to be in accordance with CHeCS guidelines and recommendations.

Herd Health Declaration The sale entry form is accompanied by a Herd Health Declaration form asking vendors questions regarding for example: TB status; membership of CHeCS (www.checs.co.uk) health schemes (AFBI Cattle Health Scheme, HiHealth Herdcare (Biobest), & Premium Cattle Health Scheme (SRUC) and Johne’s, BVD, IBR and Lepto status. On line entries also require the Herd Health Declaration form to be completed.

Is the Herd Health Declaration compulsory?

The Herd Health Declaration is compulsory at all Premier Collective Sales. For reasons of clarity and to provide purchasers with the most accurate information available, vendors are required to complete this at time of entry.

Although not compulsory at other collective sales (Newark in April & Ballymena, Dungannon, Thainstone & Stirling in May), the Society recommends that vendors complete the Herd Health Declaration. This information then appears in the Vendors’ Index within the catalogue. Where a member has chosen not to complete the Herd Health Declaration, it will simply say ‘No Herd Health Declaration’.

What Other Health Information may be displayed?

It should be noted that the Herd Health information provided in the catalogue relates to whole herd status. Information relating to specific animals entered in the sale should be requested from the vendor.

Vendors are encouraged to apply to their respective CHeCS health scheme for individual animal health cards for display on pens. For an individual animal’s test results, or vaccination histories, regarding BVD, IBR, Lepto or Johne’s, these are permitted above the sale pens only upon presentation of a signed veterinary declaration to verify that the animal concerned has had a clear test.

116 Again, for reasons of practicality, no health information notes are to be put in the catalogue footnotes by vendors. Similarly, the Society has requested that no declarations on health information be given by the auctioneer during the sale. Again, the sole purpose of this is to avoid confusion and to try and ensure that the information provided is done accurately, fairly and in a standardised format in the catalogue. This point has been agreed with the auctioneers.

Johne’s Risk Levels The Herd Health Declaration includes a section where breeders are able to indicate their Johne’s Risk Level, once known.

It is a condition of BLCS Premier Collective Sales that animals from herds that are Johnes Risk Level 5 are not permitted to be sold.

Should you have any queries regarding the new Johne’s Risk Level classification, please contact your respective CHeCS health scheme.

What if a vendor is selling an animal/s that he did not breed?

Vendors are still requested to fill in the Herd Health Sale Declaration accordingly. Prospective customers are advised to speak to vendors directly to acquire accurate health information on animals offered but not bred by the seller.
