Judges HOLSTEIN

Roger Turner, Winconsin, America.

Since 2012 Roger Turner has been the Global Sales and Genetic Manager for Jetstream Genetics LLC. Previously he was employed by Alta Genetics Inc. as a Regional Sire Analyst and also an International Sales Manager for just over 18 years.

Roger was raised at Railhaven Holsteins, a registered Holstein farm in Ontario, Canada.

Turner was a self-employed, professional dairy cattle fitter for 12 years before joining the AI industry. This work took him across North America and to many foreign countries where he prepared, showed and owned numerous All-Canadians, All-Americans and Grand Champions.

Roger’s judging career has included assignments to more than 21 countries, and over a dozen US states and numerous Canadian provinces. Roger has judged at The Royal Winter Fair in Canada, Swiss Expo in Lausanne, Switzerland, European Holstein Show in Verona, Italy , International Dairy Week in Australia as well as four occasions at World Dairy Expo, Madison, WI including his most recent assignment in 2016. Additionally, he has served as a member of both the All-American & All-Canadian selection committees for various breeds and has officiated at numerous US National Shows.

Roger in the past has held positions on the Holstein Canada Type & Classification Advisory Board and Past President of the Canadian Livestock Genetics Association.

A proud supporter of youth programs, Roger is also a voluntary at the USA Intercollegaite Judging Competition at WDE as well as a Canadian Classic volunteer at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Roger and his wife Brenda live in Sun Prairie, Winconsin, USA.

COLOURED BREEDS

Blair Weeks, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Blair Weeks owns and operates Weeksdale Holsteins along with his wife Jaime and his parents Elmer and Sandra. Weeksdale is a Master Breeder herd with a current classification of 24EX - 35VG & 18 GP. He has been as official judge with Holstein Canada for 13 years, judging numerous shows across Canada, as well as associated judge for the Ayrshire breed at the 2016 World Dairy Expo .

This past year Weeksdale bred and own the Honourable Mention Grand Champion Holstein at Expo, Weekdale Judges Harmony EX 95. Blair has run and managed numerous sales, such as the East Coast Style sale in 2016 and the annual Island Spring Sensation Sale. Weeksdale has bred and owned numerous All Canadians and All Americans and are annual exhibitors at World Dairy Expo and the Royal Winter Fair.

At the 2016 Royal Winter Fair Blair was presented with the Andrea Crowe Memorial Award. Blair resides in Pleasant Valley, Prince Edward Island with his wife and daughter Adelle

BRITISH FRIESIAN NATIONAL SHOW Meurig James, UK.

In 2017 the Borderway UK Dairy Expo will also include the National Show for the British Friesian breed and taking centre stage to judge the classes will be Meurig James Meurig is the Head Classifier at Holstein UK and has been a classifier since 1993.

Mr James has judged All Breeds and many Inter Breed Championships over the years including the Great Yorkshire, Royal Norfolk, Suffolk and Pembrokeshire Shows.

His judging career has taken him to many countries including the National Holstein Show in Argentina and he has twice judged the Irish National Show at Millstreet.

This is the second time Meurig has judged the National British Friesian Show.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS Paul Harrison, UK.

The honour of judging the Champion of Champions for the 2017 Expo will be Paul Harrison from Northumberland, UK. Paul Harrison along with his wife Ann currently runs their prize winning Chishillways Holstein and Breckly Shorthorn herds at Heddon on Wall, Northumbria.

Paul is a renowned judge of both Holstein and Milking Shorthorns having judged the Royal Highland Holstein Show in 2008 and the National Holstein Calf Show in 2013 together with the National Milking Shorthorn Calf Show in 2004.

UK & INTERNATIONAL SHOWMANSHIP CHAMPIONSHIPS Michael Halliwell, UK Michael Halliwell is the Business Development Manager for World Wide Sires UK providing UK dairy farmers access to a complete range of leading dairy genetics. Mike also offers farmers advice on management issues and mating solutions for sustainable dairy production.

Mike has prepared cows for shows for a number of years in UK & Ireland, Germany, Holland, Austria, France, Belgium, Poland, USA and Australia. He has been a leader at the highly regarded European Young Breeders School in Belgium since 2011 and his judging career has seen him officiate at many shows throughout the UK & Ireland and Europe including numerous showmanship competitions.

UK Dairy Industry Honours Industry Star at UK Dairy Expo 2017 The John Dennison Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo for the fifth year running. This award is in memory of the life time industry contribution made by Cumbrian dairy farmer and highly regarded breeder John Dennison.

The aim of this award is to recognise the dairy cattle breeder or exhibitor judged to be a high achiever and exemplary role model within the dairy industry.

The 2016 winner was Alister Laird of the Blythbridge Herd based near Edinburgh. Previous winners of the award had all contributed their skills and expertise to the dairy industry and to the next generation of young breeders. Alister was no exception, one word described him and that was ‘Passion’. He is passionate about dairy farming, showing, breeding profitable cows, helping others, celebrating and has encouraged his family and the next generation.

This unique award is given to the nominee judged to have the perfect combination of ability, sportsmanship, integrity and character within the Dairy Industry. The winner will be announced and presented with their award at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo on 11th March.

Glynn Lucas at Harrison and Hetherington said: “This award really is a unique award for UK Dairy Industry. It recognises people who shine and who have put their lifetimes work into the industry, just like all the previous winners”.

The Borderway uk dairy Expo will be subject to the National UK Rules and Regulations for showing Dairy Cattle (full details, please refer to our website –www.harrisonandhetherington.co.uk)

ANIMAL WELFARE It is the responsibility of each exhibitor for the welfare of the animals entered for competition in the Borderway UK Dairy Expo classes. If, in the opinion of the Official Stewards and/or Official Veterinary Surgeon, any animal is mistreated, or presented for judging in anything other than an approved state, then that exhibitor will be barred from presenting any of his animals for judging, and all prize money will be withheld.

If any animal requires hypodermic injection or artificial stimulant for any reason whatsoever the veterinary officer or failing, the chief steward must be informed before the action takes place and must be witness to the action.

Any exhibitor or his representative found to be using methods which could be construed as malpractice will, along with his animals, be removed from the show site immediately, and all prize money withheld. Exhibitors in any doubt about what constitutes malpractice should consult the Official Stewards. All animals may be subject to tests and exhibitors may be asked to present a veterinary certificate.

The Stewards appointed by the Borderway UK Dairy Expo will be doing all they can to ensure the well-being of exhibitors and animals, and ask for the co-operation of exhibitors.

1. Registration All breeds will be exhibited under their Breed Society Conditions. All dairy cattle must be registered in the Herd Book or be in the grading-up appendices to the Herd Book of the appropriate Breed Society.

Animals registered as ASR (SRA) under the Holstein Herd Book are not eligible.

Animals entered in the Ayrshire classes must be at least 51%% Ayrshire blood/genetics and be registered with the Ayrshire Cattle Society in appendix B, A or Pedigree sections, any Black and White animals to be fully pedigree Ayrshire.

All animals for the Red & White classes must be Red & White in colour. Animals with a questionable hair coat colour will be referred to a representative of the UK Dairy Expo.

2. Records Identification registrations, milk record certificates and cattle passports must accompany the animals to the Borderway Centre and must be available for inspection by the stewards at any time. Movement off and onto the exhibitors holding should be notified to the British Cattle Movement Service within 3 days of the movement and recorded in the holding of origins movement books. The show organisers are responsible for notifying BCMS of movements onto and off the Borderway Centre.

3. Biosecurity Exhibitors are required under legislation to cleanse and disinfect transport vehicles that have carried stock as soon as possible and in any case within 24 hours. Robust footwear should be worn which is capable of being disinfected at the show.

4. Arrival of Cattle Dairy cattle will only be admitted to the Borderway Centre between –

12noon and 6.00pm

Thursday 9th March

7.00am and 9.00am

Friday 10th March

5. Departure of Cattle Cattle will be permitted to leave the Borderway Centre at the close of the Borderway UK Dairy Expo – from 5.30pm until 8pm on Saturday 11th March. All cattle must be removed by 10am on Sunday 12th March. Any movement outwith these hours can only be made with the approval of the Organisers. Prize money will be withheld if these conditions are not met.

6. Veterinary Inspection/Services All cattle will be subject to veterinary inspection on entering and at any time in the Borderway Centre, if requested by the Veterinary Surgeon or Chief Steward. Any veterinary services will be paid for be the exhibitor.

7. Stalling Exhibitors will be permitted to use their stall space for the presentation of information and publicity material relating to the animals present or herd represented, but may not in any circumstances advertise on behalf of a third party. Under no circumstances should the stalling be dismantled or altered in any way.

8. Straw A limited amount of straw will be provided, additional straw may be purchased.

9. Head Boards Only official headboards supplied with completed information from the Organisers may be used. All stock exhibitors must have readily available on arrival at the Borderway Centre official milk record information. Exhibitors must return the requested information on all animals that will possibly be exhibited 10 days before the event.

10. Milking Facilities Milking facilitiies will be on site at the Borderway Centre. Milk produced becomes the property of the Organiser and no direct payment will be made to exhibitors. The Organisers Steward must be informed of any animal receiving antibiotic treatment, and all milk from that animal must be disposed of at the direction of the Steward. Under no circumstances should that milk be added to the bulk tank.

11. Electrical Equipment It is a condition of entry that all exhibitors should provide and use circuit breakers with all electrical equipment.

All electrical equipment – no matter how small – must have a current PAT (Portable Appliance Test) Certificate. These certificates must be available for inspection on the day prior to the Borderway UK Dairy Expo; they may also be required for inspection by the City of Carlisle Council officials.

12. Entries and Entry Fees Exhibitors are solely responsible for the accuracy and eligibility of their entries, which must be accompanied by the appropriate payment.

Exhibitors must abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Borderway UK Dairy Show, and must also observe the Rules of the appropriate Breed Society.

The entry fee is £50 + VAT per milking entry and £30 + VAT per dry stock/calves. All entry forms must be accompanied by payments and must be received by Monday 30th January 2017. Only in exceptional circumstances will entry fees be refunded.

13. Interpretation of Rules The decision of the Organisers and Chief Steward are in all matters final. The Organiser reserves the right to refuse entries or to reject any animal. Exhibitors must abide by the Rules and Regulations of the Borderway UK Dairy Expo.
