General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1 /4 mile of M6.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: All animals are sold under British Limousin Cattle Society auction rules and conditions of sale drawn up by the N.B.A. These entries will be sold subject to these rules along with the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the N.B.A. conditions of sale shall prevail.

INSURANCE: A representative of the H & H Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

Purchasers unable to remove their stock on the day of sale can arrange overnight accommodation with the Auctioneers on the understanding that all cattle are at Purchasers’ risk.

Foreword: Welcome to the Ronick Production Sale.

The Ronick Herd was established in 1980 some 41 years ago and the family has ever since had a great passion for Limousin. Our main concentration over the years has been to breed top quality females as they are the foundation every herd needs to breed and succeed. We pride ourselves in the success we have had over the decades with many Ronick bred animals gaining top honours at major shows throughout the UK and Ireland. David and Ronald will always remember having the first Limousin to win Interbreed Champion at the Royal Show with Broadmeadows Ainsi many years ago.

Many of the bloodlines from these great show cows, Ainsi, Beauty, Janita to name a few, will feature throughout the sale females we have on offer as we find it necessary to sell established and successful bloodlines that we have confidence will go on and produce in any herd. We have some outstanding heifers forward for the sale, in our eyes, that we hope to see them giving other breeders joy and success over the years to come. This is our fourth production sale only due to ever increasing numbers that come with 250 pedigree cows.

We have a great influence on our herd over the recent years from our stock bulls. Rathconville Eugene 17,000gns is definitely leaving his stamp on the females with many daughters winning prestigious events such as Red Ladies champion, Honey, who sold for 20,000gns and other daughters winning the Scottish Grand Prix and helped take top awards in the Scottish herd competition over the years. Ampertaine Jamboree, 45,000gns, is another leaving his mark, selling bulls to 10,000gns and leaving great easy calving through the herd with milky females. More recently we have purchased French bred MattBen after selling sons to a top of 14,000gns in May from AI to him. Alongside this we have Millgate Ohboy of which we are offering some of his first, very promising offspring and Meadowrig Oddjob who we have high hopes for with the Ronick McAinsi in his dam line. We have also purchased back Ronick Laddie who we sold for 8000gns after being impressed with his progeny.

We also have lots featured from the Stephick herd in the sale. The Stephick herd runs alongside the Ronick herd and was established in 2010. At just 16, I decided to venture into the Limousin world that my family have been so heavily involved in and start my own herd. Through family connections my foundation cow came from the Ronick herd, Ronick Voici, a daughter of the noted Ronick Janita. Voici has been the largest influence in my herd, followed by other foundation females Sarkley Fabulous, Emslies Glamourpuss and French cows Bastille and Caline.

Sharing stock bulls, or should I say borrowing their stock bulls, and using selective AI to try and produce top quality males and females. I won the Scottish Limousin Clubs small herd prize in the 2016 herd competition and Female of the Year with Stephick Mistique in 2018, same year as she claimed Reserve Champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. Bull sale highlights are topped with Stephick Flashi reaching 10,500gns and picking up Junior Champion. I strive to breed the best and have always maintained the quality not quantity outlook on my herd, trying to keep it ever progressing with strong bloodlines through it. I will be sad to see some females go however I know that they will go on and excel in whichever herd they go to.

Health Status – we are a high health herd being members of the SAC Premium Health scheme.

The herd is Johnes level one, from a TB 4 area and BVD accredited with all animals being tag tested.

F94L

Animals with two copies of this gene (ie F94L/F94L) exhibit an increase in muscling (by up to 19%) with no associated increased in calving difficulty, lowered fertility or longevity and by far the majority of animals in the breed carry this gene. Heterozygous animals (those with one copy of the gene) also exhibit these characteristics but not to the same degree.

NT821

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie nt821/nt821) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depths, reduced fat depths and large, rounded rump and thighs. However, unlike F94L, animals with two copies may also have slightly heavier birth weights bringing with it the potential for more difficult calvings, If animals are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calvings.

Q204X

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie Q204X/Q204X) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit larger birth weight and, if females, slightly reduced milking ability. Animals that are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/Q204X) will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by larger birth weights and reduced milking ability.

Two further variants of Myostatin exist in the population but are relatively uncommon in their occurrence. Known as nt419 and E291X, their effects are similar to nt821 and Q204X respectively.

Using Myostatin information An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance.

A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.

3 Genetic Colour 3.

Colour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles. One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene, the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.) “Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes.

“Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant.

“Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene.

“Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).

4 Genetics for Horned/Polled Status 4.

A bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant).

A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned).

A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves.

5 Estimated Breeding Values and Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs & GEBVs) EBVs & GEBVs are expressed in the same unit as the recorded trait (eg kgs for 400 Day Weight, mm for Muscle Depth etc) are relative to the Breed Average. a) In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart... a ✓ Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are. ✓ Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are. b) Accuracy Values (Acc%) are expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV, GEBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate values are less likely to change over time. b c) The numeric EBV & GEBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark which is updated annually.
