-----------------------ROMNEY SHEEP Originating from Romney Marsh in Kent, the Romney is frequently referred to as “The best known sheep in the World” because it is hardy and adaptable and is present in over 70 countries from Malaysia to Russia. Romneys went to New Zealand in 1846 and now make up half the NZ flock, either pure or as derivatives like the Coopworth. In the South-East we have made good progress with fecundity via the Wye Improvement Scheme, also in growth and muscling via the Romney 2000 and Ram Lamb Performance schemes but the main driver for the Romney has always been Natural Selection; being born on Romney Marsh in a bitter easterly wind is the first selection process. Wool has always been a feature: the wool is demi-lustre of excellent quality, whiteness and staple, second to Merino only in the prices. The rams make excellent crossing sires. You may be surprised at the muscling and shape of these Romneys from the South-East. However, lambing Romneys is facile, with nearly all sheep lambing unattended. The maternal instincts are strong and the ewes are milky. As one breeder put it “You don’t look after Romneys...they look after you!”

PH & PE Skinner

Aragon Flock

Hugh & Pauline Skinner created the Aragon Romney flock in 1976 with sheep derived from Peter Skinner’s (Puddock) flock and some from the Wye College Improvement flock. The flock has been MLC/Signet recorded since 1986 and the record shows that Aragon Romneys have been national leaders in performance for many years. The Aragon Romneys are meaty, have great maternal ability and good fecundity at 1.6 lambs per ewe. Given better pasture they produce nearer 1.8. We also do serum IgA tests annually for resilience to worms. Neogen did some tests for the MYOSTATIN gene in 2020 and the gene is definitely present in the Aragon flock. In recent years, we have sent rams to Scotland, Wales, Holland, France and Czech Republic, with many repeat orders. The Aragon flock has been MV ACCREDITED for 30 years and run as a closed flock. They have been inspected by the Romney Society inspector (teeth, limbs, testicles, breed type, etc) and tagged when passed with the Society registered tag.
