General Information NON LIABILITY CLAUSE: the auctioneers nor any of their servants, will be responsible for any injury or damage to persons or property, however caused. The attention of vendors and exhibitors is drawn to the need to take great care of stock and equipment. Although security personnel are employed and every effort is made to protect property, the organisers take no responsibility for any loss. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VENDORS All cattle must be accompanied by the relevant movement license and the relevant signed passport. All sheep must be accompanied by the relevant movement license and all MV Accredited Sheep must be accompanied by an official MV certificate. All paperwork to be handed into the auctioneers on arrival at the market. Market Holding Number - 08/067/8019 CONDITIONS OF SALE All stock will be sold subject to the Auctioneers General Conditions of Sale, printed in this catalogue. Sheep will be sold subject to the Conditions of Sale for Breeding Sheep as approved by the British Association of Livestock Auctioneers and the National Farmers Union of England and Wales. Cattle will be sold subject to the Special Terms and Conditions of Sale recommended by the National Cattle Breeders Association. No animal may be sold privately prior to the sale but must pass through the sale ring. The sale of substitute animals is NOT PERMITTED. Animals which fail to reach the ‘reserve price’ may be sold by private treaty after the auction. Full commission will be charged on all such transactions which MUST BE conducted through the auctioneer. SETTLEMENT: Settlement in full for stock purchased is due to the auctioneers immediately at the close of sale. Prospective purchasers, who are not known to the auctioneer, are asked to provide details of their ability to pay before bidding. CLEARANCE OF STOCK: No animal shall be removed from the sale premises without an official PASS obtainable only from the auctioneers upon settlement or application, and such pass MUST be presented to the auctioneers before loading. Neither the Rare Breeds Survival Trust nor the auctioneer accepts responsibility for stock after it has passed through the auction ring. Whilst the auctioneers will endeavour to assist in the correct trucking of sold animals, purchasers are reminded that all risks in respect of such animals pass to them at the fall of the hammer. Purchasers are entirely responsible for any costs or expenses which may arise due to the wrongful or incorrect locating, trucking or removal of stock, and they shall be liable for all costs of returning such stock to its proper destination. All livestock entries must be identifiable by ear tag, brand or tattoo which must correspond with the catalogue entry. Any animal not so identifiable will be REJECTED from the sale. Under no circumstances will substitute animals be allowed into the sale.

INSPECTION: All entries will be inspected for general health, soundness and freedom from defects. Certain breed societies may appoint officials to inspect entries for breed type and/or genetic or other defects or deformities. In all cases the right is reserved to reject any animal which does not conform to the accepted standards and the decision of the Inspector(s) is final. Animals so rejected must be removed from the sale area forthwith, at the vendor’s expense and will not be permitted to be sold. BUYERS PREMIUM: A buyer’s premium of 5% plus VAT will be added to the purchaser’s account. COMMISSION: Cattle, sheep and pigs will be sold in pounds and the auctioneers will charge a commission of 5% on the sale price realised. Poultry and Waterfowl will be sold in pounds sterling (£’s) and the auctioneers will charge a commission of 10% on the sale price realised with a minimum commission of £1 per lot. In the event of any animal(s) or bird(s) failing to reach the minimum Selling Price, Upset Price or Reserve Price (if any) fixed by the vendor, half commission will be charged on the said price. This sale is licensed and authorised by the appropriate local authority and by DEFRA and will be organised and conducted strictly in accordance with the regulations and special requirements of those bodies. All stock is to be removed from the sale premises on the day of sale, unless prior arrangement is made with the auctioneers. A limited amount of straw bedding will be provided by the auctioneers free of charge. Additional straw may be purchased, if required. Poultry/Waterfowl cages will be provided with wood shavings. All vendors must provide their own feedstuffs and drinking utensils.

Hauliers and farmers delivering livestock must disinfect their boots before and after loading or unloading.

Livestock purchased or unsold will not be allowed to move unless an authorised “pass slip” has been issued by the main office.
No livestock will be allowed to remain on the premises after a sale.

Any sheep found not meeting breed or health standards, and not tagged with the correct numbers will be rejected. Rejected sheep will be identified and marked with a purple mark on the top of the head. The vendor will be asked to remove the said sheep from the sale yard prior to the sale commencing. The auctioneer will not be permitted to sell such sheep. The Inspectors decision is final; purchasers are advised to do their own inspection before purchase. All sheep entered for sale will have been registered by the vendor. All sheep must be clearly identifiable with their lot number. Regulations for the Northern Sale held under the Auspices of RFBS Ltd 1. The sale will be as per the order of sale page. All lots will be sold in £. 2. All animals must be earmarked in accordance with the Society’s regulations. Each animal presented for sale must be stenciled or paint marked with the appropriate lot number before it is presented for inspection. 3. Any error of description in the catalogue will be notified and announced by the Auctioneer at the time of the sale. 4. Rosettes for the following: Champion, Reserve Champion, First, Second, Third, Fourth and Special Prizes. 5. Rams must be haltered during judging and the purchaser of each animal must be supplied with a halter by the vendor. 6. Vendors must provide food for their sheep and wood chips or shavings for the pens.

7. Breeders are responsible for the registration of all entries in the Society’s Flock Book. There will be no refund of the registration if the animal is unsold and subsequently butchered. 8. Vendors should notify reserve prices to the Auctioneers prior to the commencement of the sale. Animals for which no notification has been given will be presumed for sale without reserve. The upset price for ram lambs and shearling rams is £100. It is the responsibility of the vendor to set a reserve price if they wish to ensure that their animals are sold for breeding purposes. 9. Certificates of Pedigree for all sheep will be posted to purchasers after the sale. Certificates for lots unsold will be returned to the vendor. 10. Vendors shall ensure that each entry is adequately prepared for sale. 11. No sheep are to be penned before they are inspected by a steward appointed by the Council - they have the authority of the Council to reject unhealthy or substandard sheep. Vendors of sheep rejected by the inspectors have the right of appeal to the Show Appeals Committee. The decision of the Show Appeals Committee is final. Rejected sheep cannot be offered for sale. They will be identified with a red paint mark at the base of the neck and removed from the sale pens. 12. All animals entered or exposed for sale must be the bona fide property of the vendor at the time of entry to the sale and be free of liens, charges, and incumbents. 13. Each animal forward at the sale must be exposed for sale by auction before any private sale shall be permitted or recognised by the Auctioneers. 14. All animals must be forward for sale unless covered by a veterinary certificate. 15. All trophies won will be presented by the judge at the time of winning. All trophies to be returned to the Secretary with four weeks of the following year's sale, or at the specific request of the Society. Any animal not sold when a reasonable bid is offered will forfeit any trophies awarded. 16. All members presenting sheep for sale must have adequate public liability insurance 17. A commission of 5% will be charged by the auctioneers on all sales.

Additional Guidelines re Substitutions: ii) Substitutions are strictly only allowed to replace animals that have been taken ill, are injured, or have died. ii) The Administrator must be notified as soon as possible. The pedigree certificate of the substitute must be forwarded to the office. iii) The breeder can self certify ill health of the sheep or provide photographic evidence of the animal’s injury but the Society retains the right to insist on a veterinary certificate where deemed appropriate. iv) In the event of the death of an animal, the breeder must provide a copy of the certificate of disposal or other appropriate evidence to the Secretary as soon as is practicably possi-ble. v) A sheep may be substituted for an original entry provided that any substitution is a sheep in the same class. vi) The substitute must be clearly marked with a yellow dot at the base of the neck, at least one inch in diameter. vii) The substitute’s pen must be clearly marked and include details of the animal’s dam, sire, grand dam and grand sire clearly available for potential purchasers to see. viii) The Auctioneers must be informed of the change so that a clear announcement can be made when the substitute animal enters the sale ring.

Intending purchasers are requested to have livestock vehicles cleansed and disinfectedand have waterproofs and wellington boots when coming into contact with livestock.
MOVEMENT LICENSES Market Holding Number: 08/067/8019 Intending Purchasers should have their CPH number ready to supply the Auctioneers, so that the correct movement license may be issued before departure from the market. Vendors and purchasers must comply with current DEFRA regulations for Animal Movements in force at the time of the Sale. All licenses will be collected by stewards at the entrance to the market. No vehicles will be allowed in until this requirement has been met. No sheep will be allowed to depart from the market without a license from the auctioneers office. REFRESHMENTS Refreshments will be available.

Important Information for Vendors
SHEEP MUST BE PENNED BY 8.00AM • Sheep must be in their allotted pens by 8.00am on the day of sale. Inspec-tions will be carried out by the Society’s approved inspectors between 4—6pm on the day prior to the sale and before 8.00am on the morning of the sale. Animals not penned by this time will not be inspected and so cannot be offered for sale. Inspectors also reserve the right to refuse to inspect animals not clearly paint marked with their lot numbers. • In endorsing your sheep for sale, the RFBS must be confident that they are fit for purpose and correctly marked. Before being offered for sale, ALL sheep will be inspected to ensure that they fulfil ALL of the following criteria: • They are correctly tagged or tattooed in accordance with DEFRA and RFBS regula-tions. Ear tag numbers MUST match the details listed in the catalogue and on the animal’s pedigree certificate. • They are fit for the purpose of breeding i.e. Their teeth are correctly positioned, Rams have 2 evenly sized testicles, females have an udder free from lumps and that all sheep are free from disease and in a good bodily condition. • They are legibly paint marked with their catalogue Lot number • The length of the tail must comply with the DEFRA animal welfare regulations 2008. • Entries that are deemed by the society inspectors to have not met all of these crite-ria will be omitted from the sale. These sheep will be marked with a red dot at the base of the neck and will be kept apart from those sheep offered for sale. • Vendors are asked to make every effort to arrive as early as possible. Stewards will be in the market to assist you from 6.30am • The decisions made by the Society Inspectors must be respected and will, in almost every case, be upheld. However in the event of an animal being rejected the vendor may appeal against the decision. The decision of the Appeals Committee is final. Substitute entries must be marked with a yellow dot at the base of the neck • It is the responsibility of the vendor to supply any additional information on the pens of individual entries. • Vendors who wish to place reserves on lots offered for sale must lodge them with the auctioneers office before the auction begins. • It is the responsibility of vendors to ensure that they have adequate public liability insurance. • Vendors are advised to bring plenty of bedding for the pens Show classes will start at 9.30am prompt. The start WILL NOT be delayed for late arrivals. The sale will begin approximately 1.15pm Strict catalogue order.
Animal Health Guidance for Vendors and Inspectors. Management of suspected cases • Any animal or group of animals suspected of exhibiting signs of illness, infection or infectious disease to be rejected/quarantined pending veterinary inspection by the named veterinary officer. The veterinary officer’s opinion is final and conclu-sive. • If infectious disease is suspected then the whole batch to be quarantined pending veterinary surgeon inspection. • Two options for quarantine: i) move to isolation pens in mart which is located away from all stock and people traffic to prevent potential spread of infection. Ideally this should be outside the airspace where sale animals are penned (location of these pens to be agreed with mart). ii) Return sheep into livestock trailer they arrived until veterinary inspection.

• In practice prefer second option but this may not be possible on the Friday night if no vet on premises! • If on hand, veterinary officer to inspect sheep immediately whilst in the steward’s enclosure. • If such sheep arrived in mart in shared livestock trailer then ALL sheep in that trail-er to be quarantined. • The Veterinary Officer(s) is authorised to refuse permission for any such sheep or batches to be admitted into, or to have removed from the show and sale. The owner of such animal(s) may obtain a certificate from RFBS stating the nature of the disease or infection. • Evidence of an attempt to conceal disease will result in disqualification from show and sale and RFBS disciplinary action. • Any costs relating to materials, drugs used to treat animals is responsibility of owner/agent.
Steward Biosecurity • Mart to make available suitable DEFRA approved disinfectant for personal cleans-ing and disinfection (C+D) and, where necessary, wash floor of inspection area. • Stewards should wear wellingtons and waterproof over trousers. • Disposable gloves to be made available for use by stewards and other personnel when handling suspect sheep. • A suitable disinfectant hand wash for stewards and personnel. • Paper towels to dry hands. A selection (not exhaustive) of type of signs that raise suspicion of infection, illness or infectious disease: • Animals shouldn’t be allowed in if show signs of any fluid or other discharges eg eyes, nose, mouth, diarrhoea, vulval discharge, mastitis (swollen udder, uneven quarters) , discharging skin wound, open wounds, infected cuts, • Skin conditions – wool loss with lesions, scratching, rubbing, crusts, abscess, dis-charging lesions (wounds etc), growths. Example conditions : Sheep scab(!), ring-worm (zoonosis) but uncommon sheep), Orf (zoonosis), CLA (contagious lymphad-enitis) which is contagious skin infection, skin/lymph node abscess of sheep, lice, active fly strike, other parasites (eg ticks). • Lameness – Scald, footrot, CODD (contagious ovine digital dermatitis). In practice DO NOT allow lame sheep into show and sale. • Pneumonia – coughing, abnormal breathing (not to be confused to travelling in hot trailer). • Eyes – cloudy eyes, redness, discharge, pain, not opening eye(s). • Any local further actions to be on basis of veterinary advice eg sheep scab where suspicion contact with stock of other vendors. Of course, responsible owners will be vigilant in inspecting their sheep thoroughly prior to travel to show and sale.
Genetic Testing Results : Disclaimer
White fleeced Ryeland sheep have the ability to produce coloured fleeced Ryeland sheep due to the expression of a recessive coloured gene. Not all white fleeced Ryelands carry the reces-sive coloured gene. When they don’t, they are referred to as homozygous (WW) and cannot produce coloured fleeced lambs. White fleeced Ryeland sheep that carry the coloured reces-sive coloured gene are known as heterozygous (WH) and can sometimes produce coloured fleeced lambs if mated with another heterozygous Ryeland. The Society offers members a genetic testing service, carried out by Cardiff University, to test white fleeced Ryeland sheep to determine if they have the genetic ability to produce coloured fleeced lambs. Vendors that are submitting animals for sale and that have been previously tested are permitted to publish the result obtained at their discretion in this catalogue as homozygous (WW) or heterozygous (WH). Please note that where genetic testing results are included, that those results are an indication only and no form of guarantee or warranty is offered by the Vendor, Auctioneer, Ryeland Flock Book Society or Cardiff University for the accuracy of the result.
