About the breed: ‘Roussin de la Hague’ sheep are carefully bred in France through a Normandy-based progeny testing centre that require rams to attain eligibility criteria for performance and scrapie status to be considered for nomination. Ram progeny are monitored and graded and sold annually at a sale in Joburg. The first major influx of Roussin sheep into the UK was around 1990. Since then the breed has grown in popularity, with a reputation for lambing ease, mothering and prolificacy whilst retaining a compact muscular carcase to produce a ‘market specification’ lamb. Today rams are purchased frequently by many different buyers ranging from outdoor-lambing hill flocks in the Scottish Highlands to lowland terminal cross flocks looking to lamb ewe hoggs with the option of retaining females as replacements. Today, all UK Roussins are genetically evaluated through a whole breed analysis for traits including prolificacy with some breeders are recording additional traits like growth rate, muscling and fat depth. Pre sale show: Roussin entries will be judged (within the pens) at 5pm on 19th September by commercial Roussin and Lleyn breeder Craig Stewart of St Clears. Inspection: A committee panel is responsible for inspecting entries based on soundness for commercial requirements.
