Please read and observe the following:

• Excessive dirty vehicles will not be allowed entry, therefore ensure vehicle is clean before arrival.

• All vehicles transporting livestock will be subject to a documentation check before entry to market site.

• All visitors and traders must ensure they wear clean clothing and footwear before entering market site.

• All visitors and traders using car park areas please use main entrance.

• Hauliers and farmers delivering livestock must disinfect their boots before and after loading or unloading.

• Livestock purchased or unsold will not be allowed to move unless an authorised “pass slip” has been issued by the main office.

• No livestock will be allowed to remain on the premises after a sale.

• Only staff, livestock hauliers, owners or their agents are permitted to load or unload livestock.

• Wash hands thoroughly when leaving pennage areas.

• Please observe our staff’s instructions at all times.

Our on site Biosecurity Officer, will only be too pleased to give you assistance.

General Information & Sale Notes

LOCATION: This sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

ARRIVAL OF STOCK: Friday 22nd September 3pm - 6pm Saturday 23rd September 7am - 8am

CONDITIONS OF SALE: Sold under the respective Breed Societies conditions of Sale and the Livestock Auctioneers Terms & Conditions of Sale.

PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All sheep forward for the sale will be subject to a Society and Veterinary Inspection. Any animal which does not reach the Inspection standard will not be eligible for sale. The Inspection decision will be final and any animal failed will be removed from the sale and forfeit the entry fee.

METHOD OF SALE: All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

INSURANCE: A representative of Auctioneers Insurance Brokers will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote purchasers for transit and other risks.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of sale. No animal may leave the sale premises without an offical ‘pass slip’ obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

EXPORT TO NORTHERN IRELAND: As of 1 January 2021, the rules for exporting sheep from the United Kingdom to Northern Ireland and the European Union have changed for moving breeding stock to Northern Ireland – NO Direct Export or Vendor Returns will be available

It will be the responsibility of the purchaser and/or the vendor to make any necessary arrangements for sheep going to Northern Ireland.

Estimated Breeding Values

While index based selection is important it is also crucial to look at individual trait EBVs for a ram and match them to your flock. Different rams can have the same terminal sire index but with different combinations of EBVs. It should be remembered that stock selection should be made on what pleases the eye and suits your flock and breeding system. Figures (EBVs) should be used as a tool to assist this selection and give supporting information about genetic influences that you cannot see.

Signet’s new monthly, mixed breed analysis increases the commercial focus of existing traits and introduces a series of new EBVs.

Weight adjusted traits - Please note that carcase traits are now weight adjusted. This means that EBVs are a better prediction of carcase composition at a fixed weight as opposed to the previous method of adjusting for age.

Scan Weight (kg) – EBV for growth to scanning.

Muscle Depth (mm) – EBV for muscling across the loin at a fixed weight.

Fat Depth (mm) – EBV for fatness across the loin at a fixed weight.

Gigot Muscularity (mm) – EBV for width of gigot at a fixed weight.

Index – Superior breeding potential for growth and carcase characteristics.

Sale conditions

1.0 The sale is subject to the conditions of sale recommended for use at markets by the Livestock Auctioneers Markets Committee for England and Wales* except in so far as these conflict with the following conditions, when the following conditions shall prevail

2.0 The sale is confined to females registered with and males birth notified to the HDSBA and are the produce of registered MV accredited flocks and the property of fully paid up members of the HDSBA

2.1 For in lamb ewe sales all rams specified as being the ‘sire of’ or ‘having run with’ must be registered with HDSBA and must have been DNA tested and the results on Grassroots.

2.2 ‘In-lamb’ means having run with a particular ram.It is not a guarantee that the ewe is in lamb. Many ewes will have been scanned before or on sale day and results displayed on pens.

3.0 The entry fee is £30 per animal with £14 refunded if the animal is forward for the sale. An invoice will be sent

3.1 HDSBA reserves the right to govern the number of entries at sales. The closing date for entries (7th September) will be strictly adhered to, late entries may only be accepted if they contribute to a total that makes the sale viable.

3.2 The order of sale and position in the catalogue will be determined by ballot. Maximum of four lots from each vendor to be sold consecutively. Vendors with more than 4 entries will have their remaining entries balloted after all entries have been drawn once.

4.0 Sheep must be penned according to the times specified on the front cover of the catalogue.

5.0 There will be minimum reserve (upset) prices for sale entries as follows: Shearling rams 300 guineas, Ram lambs 250 guineas, Older Ewes 250 guineas, Shearling ewe 300 guineas, Ewe lambs 250 guineas, March born ewe lambs 200 guineas

5.1 Any sheep sold outside the ring must not be below these minimum prices and must be booked through the Auctioneers. Any sheep failing to reach the upset price in its category will be passed out unsold.

5.2 Sheep will be sold in guineas. A commission of 5p in the guinea plus VAT will be charged to the Vendor. Any charges or costs arising after the sheep have been sold (e.g. additional haulage, accommodation charges, veterinary fees etc.) will be borne by the purchaser (including overseas buyers)

5.3 The Purchaser to give his full name and home address and pay for all Lots purchased immediately at the close of the sale. No Lot or Lots shall be removed from the sale premises until paid for and a pass out slip obtained from the Auctioneers but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk and expense of the Purchaser and shall be removed from the sale premises at the Purchaser’s expense. The right of property shall not pass until the full purchase price is paid.

5.4 Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared to produce reasonable proof of identity

6.0 Sheep will only be accepted into the market and penned for sale if they are accompanied by a current SAC certificate of official MVA status which has been correctly completed

6.1 Sheep entered as Scrapie Monitored must be accompanied by a copy of the SMS certificate

6.2 Sheep catalogued with a Scrapie genotype must be accompanied by a valid certificate

7.0 All tags must comply with UK legislation and HDSBA rules on identification

8.0 All sheep must be paint branded by the owners with the catalogue numbers only. Substitutes must be declared to the HDSBA and to the Auctioneers not less than 48 hours prior to the sale and must be marked with a red dot not less than one inch in diameter behind the lot number. A maximum of two substitutes will be permitted per Vendor.

9.0 Any animal got by ET must be identified as such in the catalogue

9.1 Any rams with semen retained before sale or females which have been flushed and embryos recovered before sale must be declared in the catalogue and announced at the time of sale. Failure to do so will result in the purchaser having the right to return the sheep and be repaid the purchase price and costs.

9.2 Any female that has been subjected to any abdominal surgery including laparoscopic AI, embryo transfer or Caesarean section must be so declared in the catalogue and must be physically capable of breeding again

10.0 All sheep entered and forward at any sale will be inspected by an official HDSBA Inspector to ensure that:-

(a) their ear tag and lot numbers tally with the catalogue and with current UK legislation

(b) they comply with HDSBA’s breed standard

(c) they are of good conformation, size and condition (minimum weight: for shearling rams 100kg; shearling ewes 75kg; ram lambs 65kg; ewe lambs 60kg and March ewe lambs 50kg)

(d) they are not incorrectly docked; daggy; faulty in teeth, testicles or udder; lame or showing signs of disease.

(e) any sheep which, in the opinion of the inspectors is urine stained to the extent that it’s a welfare issue will be excluded from the sale

10.1 The expected minimum scrotum circumference (at widest) is for lambs 30cms and for shearlings 35cms

10.2 Any animals rejected by the Inspector will be marked by him and shall not be sold during or following the end of the sale.

10.3 The Inspector’s decision is final and binding and the Inspector shall be absolved from any responsibility or liability for any action taken as a result of his advice

10.4 The inclusion of any animal in the sale following any inspection is no warranty that the particular animal meets any criterion in respect of any standards or will do so in the future. Neither is it a warranty of health.

11.0 No colouring matter may be used on head or legs. Samples of hair may be collected from randomly selected animals and analysed for the presence of colouring matter. In the event of any sheep being found to have been artificially coloured, the owner will be required forthwith by the Inspector to remove from the sale yard that sheep together with all other sheep in the same consignment. If sheep are found to have been artificially coloured the matter may be referred to the Sales Committee of HDSBA for consideration as to whether any reference should be made to the Disciplinary Committee.

11.1 The use of growth promoters is banned and HDSBA reserves the right to randomly test any sheep offered for sale.

11.2 Any interference with natural tooth growth is not permitted

12.0 All shearlings must have been shorn bare after 1st April in the year of sale.

12.1 All rams, including ram lambs, are warranted by the Vendor to be capable of natural and effective service within 90 days of the sale. If at the expiration of the warranty period a ram is proven incapable of natural and effective service and within 14 days of the expiration of the warranty period a Veterinary Certificate is lodged with the Auctioneers confirming (on the day of examination):

(a) the ram is incapable of performing a natural effective service and

(b) that the incapacity is not the result of any apparent injury, accident or illness and

(c) the Veterinary Surgeon has inspected the Purchaser’s ewes and found them to be in normal, responsible breeding condition; then the Purchaser shall have the option of, either a refund of the purchase price, or accept a ram of similar quality. If the Vendor so wishes he shall be entitled to have access to the ram for a veterinary examination. If a settlement is not reached then an independent arbiter shall be appointed by the Auctioneers and his decision shall be final. The transport costs, veterinary fees etc., involved in returning stock to the Vendor must be borne by the Purchaser. Purchasers are advised to arrange insurance of any rams purchased

12.2 HDSBA does not guarantee the stock getting capabilities of any sheep

13.0 Neither the Auctioneers nor HDSBA can accept responsibility for any errors or omissions

14.0 Neither the Vendor nor the Auctioneers nor HDSBA will be responsible for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale

Roussin Sheep Society - Special Sale Rules

1. All Pedigree Sheep to be sold in guineas.

2. Commission will be deducted at the rate of 5.25% on all pedigree sheep sold, together with a 2% Society Levy.

3. Any animals in the Sale Premises which are sold by private treaty after the Auction are subject to the full commission on the price realised and all such transactions must be passed through the Auctioneers.

4. There will be an Upset Price as follows: all rams 150gns and all females 125gns.

5. All sheep will be identified with tags hung around their necks.

6. Sheep will only be accepted into the market and penned for sale if they are accompanied by an Official MV Status Certificate which has been correctly completed. This Certificate must be handed in when the animal/s arrive at the market.

7. All sheep will be subject to society and veterinary inspection on Saturday 23rd September between 7.00am and 8.00am. Any sheep being found unfit will be withdrawn from the sale.

8. No sheep to be presented while suffering from any contagious disease. All sheep should be treated against scab.

9. The vendor shall be responsible for the correctness of identity, and all sheep must have official ear tattoos and ministry tags. Buyers shall have one hour following the end of the sale to lodge any faults or misrepresentations to the Auctioneers.

10. The purchaser must satisfy himself as to the soundness and correctness of his purchase within one hour of the conclusion of the sale.

1. Entry is open to MV Accredited Sheep only.

2. Commission will be deducted at a rate of 5.25% on all sheep sold.

3. A Society Levy of 1% will be deducted from the vendor’s account and paid to the Badger Face Texel Sheep Society

4. All sheep will be sold under the Conditions of Sale of the Livestock Auctioneers Association.

5. Transfer Fee- A fee of £5 + VAT will be charged to the purchaser is they wish to transfer their purchase to their flock.

6. All sheep to be fully registered with the Badger Face Texel Society . All sheep must have official ear tattoos or tags and also be tagged in accordance with the relevant DEFRA regulations. The Vendor shall be responsible for the correctness of identity.

7. Pre Sale Inspection- All sheep forward for sale will be subject to a Society inspection. Any animal which does not reach the inspection standard will not be eligible for sale. The inspection decision will be final and any animal failing, must be removed immediately from the sale and forfeit the entry fee. No appeal is permitted.

NUMBERING: ALL SHEEP MUST BE BACK STAMPED.

8. Substitutes – Details of Substitutes must be submitted to the Society Secretary 24 hours prior to sale.

9. The Badger Face Texel Sheep Society Sub-Register allows females registered with the Beltex, Blue Texel & Texel (inc Dutch Texels) Society’s to be used for Badger Face Breeding. All females entered into the Badger Face Sub-Register can only be bred with a Badger Face Ram. These animals entered in the Sub- Register are not guaranteed to breed Badger Face Texel Sheep. If resulting offspring are correctly marked with Badger Face Markings they can enter the main registry or female offspring retained in the sub registry to be used for future breeding.

10. Export to Northern Ireland: As of 1 January 2021, the rules for exporting sheep from the United Kingdom to Northern Ireland and the European Union have changed for moving breeding stock to Northern Ireland – NO Direct Export or Vendor Returns will be available It will be the responsibility of the purchaser and/or the vendor to make any necessary arrangements for sheep going to Northern Ireland.

LOCATION: This sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: Sold under the Blue Texel Sheep Society Sale Rules and the Livestock Auctioneers Terms & Conditions of Sale.

All sheep must have ear tags to comply with current ministry regulations. The vendor shall be responsible for all faults. The buyer has one hour after the end of the sale to complain.

METHOD OF SALE: All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

INSURANCE: A representative of Auctioneers Insurance Brokers will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote purchasers for transit and other risks.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of sale. No animal may leave the sale premises without an offical ‘pass slip’ obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty the Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser as Liquidated Damages a sum equal to 33.33 per cent of the purchase price.

Notice of a claim must be supported by a Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate or a slaughter-house manager’s or other competent person’s certificate confirming the sheep to have been In Lamb for a period of at least 12 weeks on the day of sale.

38 Female sheep not described as In Lamb

38.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that a female sheep not described in any catalogue for sale or at the time of sale as In Lamb is not In Lamb at the time of sale. This warranty is a 14 Week + 5 Day Warranty.

38.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty then, at the Purchaser’s option, either the Purchaser may exercise his rights under Schedule 6, or the Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser as Liquidated Damages a sum equal to the amount in paragraph (i) of the Appendix. 39 Female sheep described as correct

39.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that all female sheep described in the catalogue or at the time of sale as correct are sound in mouth and udder, that is they are not lacking any of the 8 broad teeth and do not have any damaged or worn teeth or a defective udder. This warranty is a 5 Day Warranty.

39.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty then, at the Purchaser’s option, either the Purchaser may exercise his rights under Schedule 6, or the Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser as Liquidated Damages a sum equal to the amount in paragraph (i) of the Appendix. Notice of a claim must be supported by a Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate.

40 Female sheep proving barren

40.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that any female sheep sold as being In Lamb is In Lamb at the time of sale. This warranty is a 21 Day Warranty.

40.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty he may exercise his rights under Schedule 6. Notice of a claim must be supported by a Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate.

41 Ewes with lambs at foot

41.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that, unless stated to the contrary in any catalogue for the sale or at the time of sale, in a Lot in which the ewes are described as with lamb or with lambs at foot every ewe is suckling one or more lambs, and every lamb has a mother in the Lot. This warranty is a 5 Day Warranty.

41.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty he may exercise his rights under Schedule 6 in respect of any ewe which does not have a lamb or any motherless lamb.

42 Castrated sheep

42.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that, unless stated to the contrary in any catalogue for sale or at the time of sale, any male sheep not expressly sold as rams:

a) have been castrated; and

b) have not been imperfectly castrated.

The warranty in Condition 42.1 (a) is an After Sale Warranty and the warranty in Condition 42.1 (b) is a 14 + 5 Day Warranty.

42.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty then, at the Purchaser’s option, either he may exercise his rights under Schedule 6, or the Vendor shall pay to the Purchaser as Liquidated Damages a sum equal to 33.33 per cent of the purchase price of the sheep concerned. If other sheep had been sold in the Lot the compensation payment shall be calculated on the basis of the average price per head of all animals in the Lot.

43 Stock rams

43.1 Vendor’s warranty

The Vendor warrants that any ram sold as a stock ram for the amount in paragraph (j) of the Appendix or more is capable of natural service. This warranty is a 10 Week Warranty.

43.2 Purchaser’s rights

If the Purchaser proves a breach of warranty the Purchaser may return the ram to the Vendor who shall, at the Purchaser’s option, either replace the ram with another ram of equal value which is capable of natural service, or refund the purchase price together with such other costs and charges as the Purchaser may be entitled to under these Conditions.

For the avoidance of any doubt if the Purchaser is able to obtain viable semen from the ram for use by artificial insemination he shall not be entitled to any claim against the Vendor for breach of warranty.

Notice of a claim must be supported by a Veterinary Surgeon’s Certificate confirming that:

a) the ram’s inability incapacity or ineffectiveness is not the result of injury, accident or illness happening after the time of the sale; and

b) the Purchaser’s breeding stock are not responsible for the ram’s inability incapacity or ineffectiveness.
