General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: This sale is held under the British Limousin Cattle Society’s Auction Sale Rules and subject to recommended Conditions of Sale of the National Beef Association (NBA). This sale is held subject to these rules and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both of which are available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the NBA Conditions of Sale shall prevail INSURANCE: A representative of the Auctioneers Insurance Brokers, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Limousin Cattle Society. (Tel 02476 696500).

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfers will be effected by the Auctioneers and the British Limousin Cattle Society as soon as possible after the Sale. Full Pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all members.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

ANIMAL WELFARE: Vendors and Purchasers should note the CODE OF PRACTICE published by the Livestock Auctioneers’ Market Committee for England and Wales IS OPERATIVE IN BORDERWAY MART and that weakly, unhealthy or injured stock will be refused entry by the Auctioneers. Important Notice to Vendors

ARRIVAL OF STOCK - As per timetable of events (page 6).

CATTLE PASSPORT DOCUMENTATION – it is essential that all Cattle Passports and a completed Declaration Form accompany the animals to the sale premises and handed to the Auctioneers upon arrival to the market. Any animal not in possession of the required documentation will not be offered for sale.

PRE-SALE INSPECTION: All animals entered for the sale must be available for inspection, as per the timetable of events. A Veterinary Officer will examine all animals forward for general health and genetic defects, particularly teeth, eyes, testicles and udders.

Appointed Society Inspector will check general conformation, locomotion and breed characteristics and temperament. Any animal discovered with a genetic fault, disease or disorder will be REJECTED. Animals will be placed in a crush or race for this inspection - as required by the Veterinary Officer. The Veterinary inspection will form an integral part of the pre-sale inspection procedure.

Please note - “All animals are subject to a pre-sale inspection to provide a minimum standard and animals are sold with all patent defects, and any subsequent claim after the fall of the hammer is against the vendor and not The British Limousin Cattle Society Ltd”.

Evidence of faults of temperament, vices, etc., may lead to disqualification.

WEANED CALVES can be shown if adequately trained to lead by halter or can be sold unhaltered.

UK TAGS - All cattle entered for the Sale will have their UK tags. Tags examined as an integral part of the pre sale inspection procedure. Any tags found to have faulty, incorrect or illegible, will be REJECTED from the Sale. Vendors are therefore urged, in their own best interests, to examine the UK tags of Sale cattle before the animal(s) leave their farm, so that faulty tags can be rectified in accordance with the required Society procedures.

The Sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules, Conditions of Sale and Special Regulations of the British Limousin Cattle Society.

The full auction rules of the BLCS can be viewed in the Society's Byelaws and on the website www.limousin.co.uk. A paper copy can be made available upon request to the BLCS office.

The proceeds of sale are guaranteed by the Auctioneers, who will account to Vendors on the day of the Sale. Such guarantee, however, does not extend to the animals sold for export, to which special conditions apply.

UPSET PRICES - WEANED CALVES - there is no 'upset' price.

RESERVE PRICES: Vendors shall have the right to refuse to accept the final bid for their animals. The auctioneers reserve the right to charge half commission on the amount of the final bid in the case of animals which fail to reach the Vendors reserve price.

All animals will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5.2% will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. A further levy of 1.5% will be charged and paid to the British Limousin Cattle Society. No animal may be sold privately before being passed through the auction ring and FULL COMMISSION will be charged on the sale of any animal sold by private treaty after the auction. All such transactions MUST BE PASSED THROUGH THE AUCTIONEERS OFFICE. PRIZE MONEY: will be withheld unless the winners are sold, either by auction or private treaty.

STRAW: A limited amount of bedding straw will be provided by the Auctioneers free of charge. Additional straw, if required, may be purchased from the Auctioneers.

WEANED CALF VENDORS’ INDEX The pedigree, performance, DNA, health information and footnotes included in Society sale catalogues is as supplied by, or on behalf of the vendor. The responsibility for the accuracy of the information therefore rests solely with the vendor and not with the British Limousin Cattle Society Ltd (BLCS). It should be noted that the Estimated Breeding Values for all animals change over time, as new performance records come available. However, unlike F94L, animals with two copies may also have slightly heavier birth weights bringing with it the potential for more difficult calvings, If animals are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calvings.

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie Q204X/Q204X) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit larger birth weight and, if females, slightly reduced milking ability. 104 Using Myostatin information An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance.

A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.

3. Genetic Colour Colour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles.

One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene), the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.) “Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes.

“Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant.

“Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene.

“Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).

4. Genetics for Horned/Polled Status A bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant).

A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned).

A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves.

Herd Health at British Limousin Cattle Society (BLCS) Collective Sales Introduction Herd health rules were introduced by the BLCS at nominated premier Collective Society Sales and these are now in place at all premier BLCS Collective Sales (Stirling February & October; Carlisle February, May, October & December; Brecon May & November).

The principal aim is to standardise herd health declarations and information presented in order to provide both members and customers alike with clear, accurate herd health information at the point of sale and within the given sale catalogue. As such it is attractive and informative for customers and aims to further raise the level of buyer confidence.

BLCS Herd Health Rules have two principal elements: Part 1. Herds selling at the premier Collective Society Sales have to be members of, and adhering to, the terms of a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme. At a minimum, this must include a whole herd test for Johne’s disease.

Part 2. All animals male and female, including calves at foot, presented at the premier Collective Society Sales be EITHER from a BVD Accredited Herd within a CHeCS approved Herd Health Scheme OR to have been BVD tested virus free. All animals forward will be required to be BVD vaccinated prior to sale with an approved vaccine. Pregnant animals must have had testing and vaccination completed prior to service. Vaccination of calves at foot to be in accordance with CHeCS guidelines and recommendations.

Herd Health Declaration The sale entry form is accompanied by a Herd Health Declaration form asking vendors questions regarding for example: TB status; membership of CHeCS (www.checs.co.uk) health schemes (AFBI Cattle Health Scheme, HiHealth Herdcare (Biobest), & Premium Cattle Health Scheme (SRUC) and Johne’s, BVD, IBR and Lepto status. On line entries also require the Herd Health Declaration form to be completed.

Is the Herd Health Declaration compulsory?

The Herd Health Declaration is compulsory at all Premier Collective Sales. For reasons of clarity and to provide purchasers with the most accurate information available, vendors are required to complete this at time of entry.

Although not compulsory at other collective sales (Newark in April & Ballymena, Dungannon, Thainstone & Stirling in May), the Society recommends that vendors complete the Herd Health Declaration. This information then appears in the Vendors’ Index within the catalogue. Where a member has chosen not to complete the Herd Health Declaration, it will simply say ‘No Herd Health Declaration’.

What Other Health Information may be displayed?

It should be noted that the Herd Health information provided in the catalogue relates to whole herd status. Information relating to specific animals entered in the sale should be requested from the vendor.

Vendors are encouraged to apply to their respective CHeCS health scheme for individual animal health cards for display on pens. For an individual animal’s test results, or vaccination histories, regarding BVD, IBR, Lepto or Johne’s, these are permitted above the sale pens only upon presentation of a signed veterinary declaration to verify that the animal concerned has had a clear test.

109 Again, for reasons of practicality, no health information notes are to be put in the catalogue footnotes by vendors. Similarly, the Society has requested that no declarations on health information be given by the auctioneer during the sale. Again, the sole purpose of this is to avoid confusion and to try and ensure that the information provided is done accurately, fairly and in a standardised format in the catalogue. This point has been agreed with the auctioneers.

Johne’s Risk Levels The Herd Health Declaration includes a section where breeders are able to indicate their Johne’s Risk Level, once known.

The Risk Levels are as follows: Risk Level 1 herds that were previously Accredited Risk Level 2 herds that have had 1 or more clear qualifying tests Risk Level 3 herds that have 3% or fewer reactors every year* Risk Level 4 herds that have more than 3% reactors every year** Risk Level 5 herds not in a CHeCS Johne’s disease programme, herds with no health plan in place and herds that are not carrying out the required testing * Note, for herds with fewer than 33 animals in the target age range, rather than 3%, Risk Level 3 will be one animal testing positive for Johne’s ** Note, for herds with fewer than 33 animals in the target age range, rather than 3%, Risk Level 4 will be more than one animal testing positive for Johne’s It is a condition of BLCS Premier Collective Sales that animals from herds that are Johnes Risk Level 5 are not permitted to be sold.

What if a vendor is selling an animal/s that he did not breed?

Vendors are still requested to fill in the Herd Health Sale Declaration accordingly. Prospective customers are advised to speak to vendors directly to acquire accurate health information on animals offered but not bred by the seller.
