General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6. VIEWING: The Sale Cattle will be available for viewing at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on morning of the sale. Dispersal Sale of the
SCORBORO HERD on behalf of Messrs JCG Bloom & Son During the 1980's I was farming a commercial herd of mainly South Devon cows and using a few straws of different continental breeds, mainly Blues. I had never considered for various reasons the Limousin breed until I walked into a Carlisle Pedigree Sale with a local enthusiast Angela Clegg (Grisedale) in 1985 and I knew that day that I was hooked. I had never seen such an array of quality cattle in one place before. I went home with 3 cows and a heifer calf. That was the start of a journey that was eventually to see me become the Society Chairman, travel with Margaret my wife to 4 different continents and to meet so many wonderful people, many of whom have become personal friends. From that day forward I continued to buy from various dispersal sales for the next few years. In 1991, I purchased 4 top drawer heifers from Roughley. It was at this point I decided to close the herd to join a health plan and cull until I had control of the herds health status.. This proved to be a very expensive exercise at the time but very worthwhile eventually and I am very proud of having a high health status these last few years. These 4 heifers are now the foundation of the herd, one, Roughley Ellabelle was particularly outstanding, she topped the old MLC and Sire and Dam Summary for 3 years in a row and 24 of the current cows in the herd are her descendants, the remainder with 2 exceptions (they are Drysgol) are all from that purchase. Being away from the farm quite a lot with another business I have relied largely on stock bulls, including Normande Fortress, Normande Judge, Ronick Upshot, Ironstone Colonel, Culnagechan Executive, Proctors General and now Ilot, but the bull to have the most impact is the former Paris and French National Show Beef Champion Fenomen The herd has always been run very commercially, aiming for fairly easy calving with good growth rate progeny. I have enjoyed a bit of showing from time to time, but my aim has always been to sell good commercial stock and for some years now I have had a strong demand for breeding females together with about 50% of the bulls. Herd Health: - Consigned from a 4-years TB testing interval holding, last tested March 2017 - Johne's Risk Level1 - Member of a CHeCS controlled health scheme for BVD & IBR & Johnes & Lepto - Tested Virus free for BVD This is a complete herd dispersal and all animals are for sale with confidence, and will be PD tested before the sale, any known defects will be recorded in the catalogue or announced at the sale. As a luckpenny each lot over 14 months of age will receive 2 straws of Ilot semen. The time has now come for me to move on. I wish every purchaser the best. Jim Bloom

Dispersal Sale of the
MIDDLEDALE HERD on behalf of Mr Paul Byas The Middledale herd of Limousin cattle was founded in September 1983. Three in-calf cattle with calves at foot and one in-calf heifer were the original purchases from a Limousin Club sale at Malton. The ensuing bull calf was sold 18 months later through Carlisle and a reinvestment at the same sale in Goldies Rosa becoming the backbone of the herd for years. Embryo work done with Rosa, using top quality sires of that era, built numbers up quickly. Selection of the Limousin as the breed of choice came after many years of finishing commercial strong stores, sending them through live markets and achieving greater premiums for Limousin crosses, the type most sought after by butchers. At the start, 25 acres of permanent pasture were utilised. By the mid ‘90s the herd had grown to 200 cows requiring 300 acres of seasonal grazing. In 1994 the first buying trip to France resulted in Heroique joining the multitude as sire, his female progeny were big enough, square and milky with temperament to match and definitely put us on the map. In the early 2000s, seven sons of Hero daughters were in our team of ten bound for Perth. We gained intermediate and Junior section Champions and Supreme Overall, with a clearance average over 7500gns and topping at 12,000gns. The following spring, we took Supreme again, selling for 8500gns. However, as many of us realise, when you get to the top it’s hard to maintain such success. We have enjoyed trying though and different sires in more recent years have perhaps produced better females than bulls. Of note is the Objat son Scorboro Enigma who broke down after one season, his first son Hendrix gaining Reserve Intermediate Champion at Carlisle in October 2013. Rocky, Sympa and Dolcorsllwyn Fabio sons have produced the nucleus of the current herd. At the moment, the latest acquisition of Lodge Neon, son of Lodge Hydro, is looking promising and his first crop look good. LODGE NEON was purchased at Stirling Oct 2018. We took note of Neon whilst judging the Scottish Club Herd Competition when the Lodge Herd were judged Champion Herd. Neon's length and size appealed to us and the overall temperament of the whole herd was a huge factor. Lodge Viola has also left numerous daughters in the herd. He has been used extensively at Middledale since he came, and we are quite excited about his progeny. Of all the progeny born to date, we have only touched one calving that was coming backwards.

MIDDLEDALE NUMPTY is by Fenomen who we saw working at Scorboro. His progeny were impressive, which made us buy some semen. Like his dam, Jewel, he is not the biggest, but has great length and superb hindquarters. He has a small head and neat shoulders to make for very easy calving.

Heterozygous animals (those with one copy of the gene) also exhibit these characteristics but not to the same degree.

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie nt821/nt821) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depths, reduced fat depths and large, rounded rump and thighs. However, unlike F94L, animals with two copies may also have slightly heavier birth weights bringing with it the potential for more difficult calvings, If animals are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/nt821) they will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by more difficult calvings.

Animals with two copies of the gene (ie Q204X/Q204X) will exhibit characteristics of larger loin depth, reduced fat cover and greater meat tenderness. However, they may also have the potential to exhibit larger birth weight and, if females, slightly reduced milking ability. Animals that are ‘heterozygous’ with F94L (ie F94L/Q204X) will still exhibit quality carcase characteristics but are less likely to be affected by larger birth weights and reduced milking ability.

109 Using Myostatin information An important factor to remember is that carcase traits (muscling, fat cover etc), calving traits and milk traits in cattle are controlled by MANY genes. Myostatin is only one of them and, as such, it is not an absolute predictor of an animal’s performance. A Myostatin genotype is a further bit of information that may help your decision, but it should be used in conjunction with wider information such as Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), which bring together information of actual performance from the animal itself, its herdmates and its relatives to predict genetic merit, and your own judgment on type and pedigree.
3. Genetic Colour Colour and polled/horned genes typically come in pairs called alleles. One is inherited from the sire and one from the dam. Where an animal’s alleles are the same, it is said to be ‘Homozygous’ (Hom.) Where the alleles are different (because there is more than one variant of the gene), the animal is said to be ‘Heterozygous’ (Het.) “Hom. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on red genes. “Hom. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on black genes. All calves will be black, since black colour genes are dominant. “Het. Black” – animals will be black and will pass on either a red or black gene. “Het. Red” – animals will be red and will pass on a red gene or a colour gene known as the ‘wild type’ that is non-colour determinate. (The coat colour of calves inheriting the wild type gene will be governed by the gene they inherit from the other parent. It is rare, but it is also possible for an animal to be homozygous for the wild type gene, in which case they will be reddish/brown to brownish/black).
4. Genetics for Horned/Polled Status A bull that is “Hom. Polled” - will be polled himself and all calves will be polled (since he only has polled genes to pass on and they are dominant). A bull that is “Het. Polled” – will be polled himself and will produce some polled and some horned calves (assuming the cows are all horned). A bull that is “Hom. Horned” – will be horned himself and will pass only horned genes to his calves. In sale catalogues, Breed Average for each trait is represented by the vertical line that is central on the bar chart... ü Bars that lie to the right of that line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are above average. The further to the right they lie, the higher above Breed Average they are. ü Equally, bars that lie to the left of the line indicate EBVs/GEBVs that are below Breed Average. The further to the left they are, the further below Breed Average they are. Accuracy Values (Acc%) are expressed as a % and indicate the quantity and quality of records used to produce each EBV, GEBV or Index. The closer they are to 100%, the more accurate the EBV. Highly accurate values are less likely to change over time. The numeric EBV & GEBV values on the charts can be used to further refine comparison with the breed using the Breed Benchmark which is updated annually.

The site will then tell you the animal’s owner/breeder details, its breeding values, its pedigree and list its progeny with full links to all of their information.
6. Adjusted Weights These are the ‘raw’ weights recorded for the animal throughout its early growing stages. They are adjusted for age, but are not adjusted for any other factor such as management, nutrition, dam age, differences between farms etc.
