Purchasers of MVA Stock

There is a percentage of Lleyn Flocks Performance Recording Please note the indexes given out at the time of sale are a representation of these flocks only and not the whole breed. It is the responsibility of the prospective buyers to understand this information.

If you have purchased MVA stock from a registered MVA flock to put into your own MVA registered flock, please note that SRUC rules state those animals should be tested within 12 months of purchase.

Gimmering – Accredited ewe lambs may be purchased and sold as accredited gimmers the following year under some circumstances. In summary:

• The ewe lambs may join an established accredited flock. In this case they are treated as added accredited animals (see Rule 6.2), and require an added accredited animal test 6 to 12 months after joining the flock, or before sale if this is earlier. OR

• The ewe lambs are set up as a separate fully biosecure group. The group retains accreditation, but lose it if they are not all tested by 13 months after establishing the group (the test is due in 6-12 months, plus the one month grace period routinely added to all health certificates). If sold before the group has been established for 13 months, they can be sold as accredited with no additional testing.

THE LLEYN BREED — THE SHEEP OF THE FUTURE

A medium-sized maternal sheep breed originating in the Lleyn Peninsula in North West Wales, almost unknown in the 1960s, but now widespread across the whole British Isles and beyond. The Lleyn Sheep Society was formed in 1971 and its dynamic promotion of this excellent breed has resulted in Lleyn being one of the most numerically important maternal breeds in the UK.

Medium Sized and Easily Handled

The Lleyn ewe is smaller in size (65-85 kg) than other breeds used to produce prime lamb but is capable of rearing more than her own body weight of lambs at 14 weeks. This enables a higher stocking rate to be achieved, maximising kg of lamb produced per Ha.

Outstandingly Maternal and Productive

The Lleyn ewe mothers her newborn lambs without any fuss, but with great enthusiasm, whether she is an older, experienced ewe or a ewe lamb lambing for the first time. She is an excellent milker and her lambs are remarkably quick getting to their feet and suckling, particularly important when lambing outside in less-than-perfectweather conditions!

Pure-bred, Cross-bred and Carcase Quality

The Lleyn ewe delivers outstanding maternal performance and efficiency, whether bred pure or crossed with any terminal sire. Pure-bred twins can be ready for slaughter at 14-16 weeks of age and with highly satisfactory carcases (R3L or better). When crossed with a terminal sire, the cross-bred lambs grow and grade extremely well (typically Es and Us).

Lleyn Rams

Lleyn rams are widely used for crossing on other breeds, particularly hill and upland breeds to increase lambing percentage of the resultant breeding ewes and to improve carcase quality. Lleyn rams have also been successfully used for the same reasons on commercial crossbreds with too-high terminal content.

Buy with confidence

You can have confidence in stock you buy at a Lleyn Sheep Society Sale. All stock are inspected pre-Sale for Health and Type. All rams have been inspected by the Society Ram Inspector and are licensed for life. Some stock will have Posters indicating that they come from LLEYN GOLD flocks and some stock will have DNA Posters indicating that the animals have been DNA genotyped for specific characteristics (health, prolificacy, conformation)

Breed Characteristics

• HEAD - Distinctive and feminine; warm white in colour; wide forehead; good length from eye to nose, straight to slightly dished and narrowing towards the nose; bright lively eyes; black nose.

NOTES

NOTES

Lleyn Sheep Society Conditions of Sale at Society Sales

BALLYMENA (export sale only), CARLISLE, EXETER, ROSS-ON-WYE, RUTHIN AND WELSHPOOL

ELEGIBILITY

1. Only registered Lleyn sheep aged 5 years and below, and belonging to members of the Lleyn Sheep Society, will be accepted in the Society’s official Sales.

ENTRIES

2. Entries to the Sales must be made on the official Entry Forms. All relevant details must be completed in full. Only sheep thus entered will be allowed in the Sale. (However, see para 4). NOTE: If the details are not fully completed the Entry Form will be treated as void.

3. Rams

Ram and ram lamb entries are only accepted according to the following sliding scale:

(i) To sell 1 ram/ram lamb you must present a minimum of 0 ewes/ewe lambs at the Sale

2 rams/ram lambs you must present a minimum of 10 ewes/ewe lambs

3 rams/ram lambs you must present a minimum of 20 ewes/ewe lambs

4 rams/ram lambs you must present a minimum of 40 ewes/ewe lambs

5 rams/ram lambs you must present a minimum of 50 ewes/ewe lambs

6 rams/ram lambs you must present a minimum of 60 ewes/ewe lambs

(ii) SIX rams/ram lambs is the maximum that will be accepted at any one sale per flock.

(iii) There is no limit to the number of females which can be entered.

(iv) In the case that a Vendor is unable to bring females to a sale, then that Vendor will only be allowed to sell one ram at that sale (not the whole consignment). A Vendor presenting a reduced number of females at any one sale must comply with the existing sliding scale for the number of rams allowed.

Entry fee allowing ram/female ratio exemption – only operative at time of entry/before closing date

The current ram-female ratio remains. Up to 3 rams for a sale treat the same. Should the breeder wish to bring 4 - 6 rams without enough females they must pay a £50+vat(€70+vat)/head entry fee for the extra rams, payable to the Society at time of entering (non-refundable). For example, a breeder wishes to bring 6 rams and 20 females – they would pay £150+vat entry fee (3 x £50+vat). Another breeder brings 60 females and 6 rams = no charge) or 4 rams and 30 females = £60 (1x£60)

3. The Society will permit one substitute ram or ram lamb per vendor per sale on condition that the substituted ram is of the same age as that entered . Notification of the substitute to be given to the Society’s Secretary three clear days prior to the date of the Sale. The substituted ram to have a green dot on its shoulder and this to be the responsibility of the seller.

4. Members are not allowed to enter the same sheep in two or more of the Society’s Sales in the same year. IDENTIFICATION

6. Tagging

(i) Ewes born in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and ewe lambs born in 2025 – must be tagged with information defined by Defra in both ears. The Society tag will act as the third tag but should members wish not to have three tags then they must include Society information (flock number, year number and individual number to match the EID

8. All sheep are to be penned as advised on the official sales catalogue. Late arrivals will be refused admission to the sale ring.

9. The sheep will be penned in two sections: Maedi -Visna Accredited and Non Maedi-Visna Accredited.

Any entry which does not meet the Society’s standards will be withdrawn. NOTE: THE PANEL’S DECISION IS FINAL and any query arising from the Inspectors’ decisions should be directed to the Secretary or other Society Representative on the day of the Sale.

ORDER OF SALE

21. The order of the Sale will be: five year old ewes, four year old, three year old, two year old, shearlings and, finally, ewe lambs. The sale of rams will follow except where the circumstances of a particular Sale dictate otherwise, in which case a relevant notice will be printed in the Sale Catalogue.

22 The order of the Sale within these categories will be by a ballot in the presence of a Society representative. The Sale catalogue will be printed strictly in accordance with the outcome of the ballot.

23. Re-runs of sheep through the sale ring – the first three pens of shearling ewes and ewe lambs if they were unsold they can be offered for sale again at the end of the relevant section. This rule does not apply to aged ewes or rams which cannot be offered again.

MINIMUM SALE PRICE

24. No rams or ram lambs shall be sold for a price less than 300 guineas. Ewes/ewe lambs are not subject to restriction and will be sold in pounds.

RAM FERTILITY

25 Any ram/ram lamb sold is warranted to be capable of, and effective at, natural service. If such a ram is proved to be incapable or ineffective at natural service and written notice to that effect, supported by a Veterinary Surgeon’s certificate, is given by the Purchaser to the Auctioneer within 10 weeks after the Sale date, then the Purchaser may return the ram to the Vendor who shall, at the Purchaser’s option, either replace the ram with another ram of equal value, capable of and effective at natural service, or refund the purchase price of the animal together with such costs and charges as the Purchaser may be entitled to.

26. For the purpose of this claim, the Veterinary Surgeon’s certificate shall state:

(i) that the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness is not the result of injury, accident or illness which had occurred after the time of the Sale;

(ii) that, upon examination, the Purchaser’s female breeding stock had been found to be in normal breeding condition;

(iii) that the Purchaser is not responsible for the ram’s incapacity or ineffectiveness.

27. Lambs which are born to a ram which has been proved infertile by a Veterinary Surgeon cannot be allowed registration except by the permission of the previous owner.

RAM GUARANTEES

28 If a ram has been used, or semen retained, the owner must declare it in the catalogue or at the time of sale. It is up to the buyer to ascertain this before purchasing .

ANIMAL HEALTH

29. Members are seriously recommended to treat sheep against scab within 28 days before the sale.

30. Vendors with sheep showing signs of any contagious disease at any Sale will be asked to remove the sheep from the market premises immediately and those sheep will not be offered for sale. Where necessary, the whole consignment may have to be removed. If a Vet is called, and supports the Society’s decision, the fees incurred will be the responsibility of the Vendor.

DISPUTES

31. In case of dispute between the Vendor and the Society in which a Veterinary Surgeon is called, if the Veterinary Surgeon finds in favour of the Vendor, the Society will be liable to pay the veterinary fees. However, if the Veterinary Surgeon finds in favour of the Society, the Vendor will be liable to pay the veterinary fees.

32 A Society Committee will be present to be consulted in the case of disputes.

33. Any complaint should be made to the Auctioneers within 2 hours of the end of the Sale and before the removal of animals from the Sale premises.

34 Any dispute concerning the ear tag numbers of sheep sold at the Sales will be the responsibility of the Vendor and any cost incurred as a result will fall entirely upon the Vendor.

35. If sheep have not been tagged correctly, according to the Society’s rules (see para 6), the Purchaser may, within 2 hours of the end of the Sale and before removal of the animals from the Sale premises, return the animals to the Vendor and be refunded the purchase price. However, should any disputes arise which involve Maedi-Visna accredited sheep that have been moved by the Purchaser to the non Maedi -Visna accredited section, any claim will be void.
