Welcome to the catalogue for the first ever HDSBA online timed auction. The HDSBA council are really excited to be involved in this innovative way of selling sheep during these strange times and would like to thank Harrison and Hetherington for their help in making it happen. I know this will be a novel experience for us all and it will present new challenges such as bidding online and judging sheep from pictures and videos. Please persevere as I am sure it will be worth it. Our secretary and the staff at H and H will be happy to help you with any queries you may have. For those of you who are new to Hampshire Down sheep I would just like to quickly introduce the breed. Purebred Hampshire Down and crossbred lambs are easily lambed, lively, quickly up on their feet and keen to suckle. The lambs grow quickly and finish well on a variety of systems. Their meat is succulent and tastes great; a favourite of butchers and the catering industry. Rams and ewes keep condition easily and show good longevity. Buyers Information WHEN IS THE SALE? The online timed auction will take place from 10am Friday 12th June and the lots will finish in order, one every minute approx. from midday on Sunday 14th June 2020. HOW DOES A TIMED AUCTION WORK? It’s a bit like eBay! All lots open at 10am on 12th June and will finish at 1 minute intervals from Midday on Sunday 14th June. So, lot one will finish first, followed by lot 2 a minute* later so if purchasers miss their first lot there will still be time to bid on another. (*If there is a flurry of bids as a lot is due to close the closing time will extend until there have been no bids for a period of time. The following lot will then close).Whoever has the highest bid at the end of each lot will be the purchaser (providing it meets reserves and upset prices – see below) There will be a ‘timer’ so you will know when a lot is finishing. WHEN & WHERE CAN I SEE THE CATALOGUE? The Catalogue will be available to view from the 1st June on the HDSBA website. It will also be emailed to members. The sale webpage will go live on or before Friday 5th June on the Harrison and Hetherington online sales website where there will be additional photographs and videos of each lot. DO I HAVE TO REGISTER TO BID ON LOTS? YES, in order to bid on lots and to see how the auction is progressing you will have to register. This is a 2 stage process. In order to place a bid you additionally have to register with H and H. Don’t wait till the last minutes as it will take some time for them to verify your details. Buyers Information HOW SOON DO I HAVE TO REGISTER TO BID? You can register to bid straight away. To be sure that you can bid you must have registered at least 24hrs before the bidding starts i.e. by 10am on Thursday 11th June. It might be possible to register to bid after that but it can’t be guaranteed. HOW DO I FIND THE ONLINE SALE PAGE You can go to the HDSBA website where there will be a link, through the Hand H website look for the online auction tab at the top of the page or click this link https://handh.auctionmarts.com/ ARE ENTERED SHEEP GOING TO BE INSPECTED? Each vendor has submitted photos and a video of their lots, these have been inspected by a Society inspector before the entry was accepted for the sale. However this is not a guarantee – see the sale conditions for details. The vendor is also required to declare that the weight and scrotal measurement meet the required standard and purchasers will be able to reject sheep if these declarations subsequently turn out to be untrue. WILL THE SHEEP BE TRIMMED? Lambs being sold can be untrimmed, trimmed but not carded, trimmed and carded or even shorn. We have asked vendors for a declaration as to how they have prepared their lambs. Shearlings will be shorn bare on or after 1st March 2020. HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE SHEEP? The HDSBA catalogue will have a number of pictures of each animal to give you an all-round view. You can click on links in the catalogue to view the entry’s full pedigree and it’s performance recording figures on the Signet website where applicable. Additional pictures and videos will be available for every lot when the H and H online sale page goes live on June 5th. If more details are required then don’t hesitate to speak directly to the vendor who will be more than happy to help.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE VENDORS DETAILS TO SPEAK TO THEM? Contact details for the vendors are available in this catalogue. WHAT ARE THE UPSET (MINIMUM) PRICES FOR THE SALE? Each vendor will have the opportunity to set a reserve and we also have upset (minimum) prices that are set for all our breed sales. Each lot will need to meet the following prices to be sold through the auction: Ewe lambs £250, Ram lambs £300, Shearling ewes £300, Shearling rams £400. Initially you register with the auctionmarts website. I HAVE NEVER BOUGHT HAMPSHIRE DOWN SHEEP BEFORE IS THERE ANY HELP AVAILABLE? Look at the breed standard on the website so you have an idea what to look for. The society also has a list of mentors willing to help new or novice breeders. IS THERE BUYERS COMMISSION? The sale will be conducted in pounds and not guineas; - a buyer’s commission is set by the Auctioneers at 5% (plus VAT) on top of the auction price. WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT TERMS? Payment will be made through H&H – please view their conditions of sale in the catalogue. HOW DO I GET MY SHEEP? Transport details are the purchaser’s responsibility and we suggest that if you are interested in certain sheep you discuss the options with the vendor before you bid on a sheep. There is a list of livestock hauliers contact details in the catalogue to help with planning. You need to take receipt of your animal before the 5th July 2020 unless a prior arrangement has been made with the vendor.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SHEEP UNTIL I RECEIVE THEM ON MY HOLDING? Whilst you will be expected to pay for your sheep at the end of the sale the responsibility of the animals remains with the vendor until delivery. WHAT IF THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE SHEEP ON DELIVERY? You have 24 hours after delivery to assess whether your sheep is physically correct (testicles, teeth etc) The Auctioneers Association rules will cover any fertility issues. We suggest you thoroughly check your animal before it leaves the vehicle so there is no problem with loss of MV status if the animal needs to be returned. ARE BOTH MV AND NON MV SHEEP BEING SOLD? Yes the sale is open to both accredited and non-accredited sheep so if your flock is MV accredited check carefully that the sheep you are interested in are also accredited. The MV status of the vendors flock will be clear in the catalogue. IF I AM NON MV CAN I STILL BUY AN MV ACCREDITED SHEEP? Yes you can however we strongly suggest you inspect the animal in the vehicle before it comes on your holding so there no issues if the animal needs to be returned. MV sheep that come in contact with non MV sheep or graze pastures grazed by non-accredited sheep within 7 days will lose their MV status. IF I LIVE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY CAN I BUY? We have asked vendors to indicate whether they are happy to sell to purchasers that would require sheep to be exported and if they can satisfy all the requirements to do so so please check the vendors page of this catalogue where this information will be listed.

Sale Conditions 1.

2.1

The sale is confined to females registered with and males birth notified to the HDSBA and are the produce of registered flocks and the property of fully paid up members of the HDSBA.

2.2

Females only accepted if: not pregnant; not lambed within 30 days of the Sale; not subject to procedures which change the seasonal breeding pattern.

2.3

The entry fee is £12.50 incl VAT and invoices will be generated at time of submission of entries. Entries will not be accepted until these have been paid in full.

2.4

HDSBA reserves the right to govern the number of entries at sales. If this sale is oversubscribed vendors will be limited to a total number of entries equivalent to 20% of ewes within their flock with birth notified lambs for the 2019/2020 lambing season. If further reduction is required, priority will be given to breeders who have supported the premier sale as vendors in previous years.

2.9

Payment: The auctioneers will invoice purchasers at the end of the sale. Vendors will be paid once the animal has been collected/delivered. Until that point the sheep remains the responsibility of the vendor.

2.10 The costs and arrangement of transport is the responsibility of the purchaser and should be completed within 21 days of the close of the sale unless a different agreement is reached between the parties involved. 2.11 Any disputes arising from the sale of animals with the exception of those arising under rule 8.1 to be notified to the auctioneers within 24 hours of arrival. 2.12 If any dispute results in purchasers returning sheep, they must endeavor to ensure that MV accredited sheep maintain their status before return by keeping them isolated from non MV sheep and maintaining good biosecurity before handling the sheep.

6.1

Photographs of all sheep entered will be inspected by an official HDSBA Inspector to ensure that:(a) they comply with HDSBA’s breed standard. (b) they are of good conformation and size and/or condition. (c) they are not incorrectly docked; daggy; faulty in teeth, testicles or udder; lame or showing signs of disease. (d) any sheep which, in the opinion of the inspectors is urine stained to the extent that it’s a welfare issue will be excluded from the sale. Any animals not meeting these criteria will be excluded from the sale.

6.2

The expected minimum scrotum circumference (at widest) is for lambs 30cms and for shearlings 35cms.

6.3

The minimum weights are: for shearling rams-100kg; shearling ewes-75kg; ram lambs65kg; ewe lambs-60kg. Vendors will be asked to confirm when they complete the entry forms that entered sheep will meet these weights and scrotal circumference minimums on sale day. Purchasers have the right to reject sheep at time of delivery/ collection if these standards are not met.

3.1

MV accredited Sheep will only be accepted as ‘MV Accredited ‘for the sale if the entry is accompanied by a current SAC certificate of official MVA status which has been correctly completed.

3.2

Entries for sheep catalogued with a certified Scrapie genotype must be accompanied by a valid certificate.

6.4

The Inspector’s decision is final and binding and the Inspector shall be absolved from any responsibility or liability for any action taken as a result of his advice.

4.1

All tags must comply with UK legislation and HDSBA rules on identification.

6.5

4.3

A vendor can only substitute 25% of lots and this must be done a minimum of 7 days prior to the start of the auction. A single lot can only be substituted once.

The inclusion of any animal in the sale following any inspection is no warranty that the particular animal meets any criterion in respect of any standards or will do so in the future. Neither is it a warranty of health status.

5.1

Any animal got by ET must be identified as such on the entry form.

7.1

2.7 There will be minimum reserve (upset) prices for sale entries as follows: Ewe lambs £250 Ram lambs £300 Shearling ewes £300 Shearling rams £400 Any sheep failing to reach the upset price in its category will be unsold.

5.2

Any rams with semen retained before sale or females which have been flushed and embryos recovered before sale must be declared on the entry form. Failure to do so will result in the purchaser having the right to return the sheep and be repaid the purchase price and costs.

No coloring matter may be used on head or legs. If sheep are found to have been artificially coloured the matter may be referred to the Sales Committee of HDSBA for consideration as to whether any reference should be made to the Disciplinary Committee. Submitted photographs should not be manipulated in any way that enhances the appearance of the sheep. If this is found to be the case, the matter may be referred to the disciplinary committee.

The use of growth promoters is banned and HDSBA reserves the right to randomly test any sheep offered for sale.

Any interference with natural tooth growth is not permitted.

The sale is subject to the conditions of sale recommended for use at markets by the Livestock Auctioneers Markets Committee for England and Wales* except in so far as these conflict with the following conditions, when the following conditions shall prevail.

Sale Conditions

The order of sale and position in the catalogue will be determined by ballot. Maximum of four lots from each vendor to be sold consecutively. Vendors with more than 4 entries will have their remaining entries balloted after all entries have been drawn once. The sale starts at 10am on Friday the12th June and start to finish in lot order at Midday on Sunday the 14th of June.

Auction Costs: There will be a 5% buyers fee and a 2% sellers commission charged by H and H auctioneers.

Any female that has been subjected to any abdominal surgery including laparoscopic AI, embryo transfer or Caesarean section must be so declared on the entry form and must be physically capable of breeding again.

7.3

All shearlings must have been shorn bare, not before 1st March, in the year of sale.

8.1

All rams, including ram lambs, are warranted by the Vendor to be capable of natural and effective service within 90 days of the sale. If at the expiration of the warranty period a ram is proven incapable of natural and effective service and within 14 days of the expiration of the warranty period a Veterinary Certificate is lodged with the Auctioneers confirming (on the day of examination): (a) the ram is incapable of performing a natural effective service and (b) that the incapacity is not the result of any apparent injury, accident or illness and (c) the Veterinary Surgeon has inspected the Purchaser’s ewes and found them to be in normal, responsible breeding condition then the Purchaser shall have the option of, either a refund of the purchase price, or accept a ram of similar quality. If the Vendor so wishes he shall be entitled to have access to the ram for a veterinary examination. If a settlement is not reached then an independent arbiter shall be appointed by the Auctioneers and his decision shall be final. The transport costs, veterinary fees etc., involved in returning stock to the Vendor must be borne by the Purchaser. Purchasers are advised to arrange insurance of any rams purchased.

8.2

HDSBA does not guarantee the stock getting capabilities of any sheep.

9.1

Neither the Auctioneers nor HDSBA can accept responsibility for any errors or omissions.

10.1 Neither the Vendor nor the Auctioneers nor HDSBA will be responsible for any accident or injury to persons or property, through fire or any other cause whatsoever, nor for any damage by animals prior to, during or after the sale. 11.1

METHOD OF SALE: All payments are to be made in £ pounds sterling. Payment will be due in full at the final bid in respect of the lot sold plus all associated costs, buyers premium, Including VAT (value added tax) if applicable. Each Lot will be sold in pounds sterling (£) and a buyers’ premium of 5% (plus VAT) will be added to the bid price. The following methods of payment are accepted: I. Debit card II. Business Credit card only but will incur a surcharge of 2% III. Direct bank transfer IV. No Cash or Cheque

Hampshire Down Membership There are many reasons to breed Hampshire Down Sheep and if you do, for any reason, then you should consider becoming a member of the association (HDSBA). Hampshire Down sheep are quite unique when compared against all other breeds. Not only are they high performing terminal sires for commercial farmers wanting fast finishing lambs, but also a great breed to enjoy on a small scale. We are a small society with a diverse range of members, and because of this we have become known as the â€˜friendly societyâ€™. We exist to further the breed through selective breeding and education. Many of our members are successfully breeding high performance rams for the home and export market, and many are enjoying a few sheep in a paddock. All are willing to share knowledge and a bit of fun at the shows. HDSBA publish regular Newsletters, hold national training events, and regional social farm walks and functions. We also hold a number of sales every year starting with Stirling in the spring to Carlisle in the Autumn with our Premier Breeders sale at the end of June. There are many shows up and down the country that have Hampshire Down classes. The AGM weekend held in the Autumn is a great social event.
