Greenmoorside Farm is situated in the West Cumbria coast line with views across to the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland. This has been my home and home to the Greenmoorside Holstein Friesian herd for the past forty years.
In June 2014 due to unforeseen circumstances the dairy herd was dispersed and all the youngstock were retained. Milking recommenced in June 2015 with the original youngstock plus 80 freshly calved cows that I purchased from several leading herds in Ireland.
Since then, all the stock have been home bred or purchased from my brothers well known Julian Holme pedigree herd.
I have taken the decision to retire from milking cows, although I still love milking and working with my cows, I want to have the ability to spend more time with family and friends. This complete dispersal of the entire milking herd including all the youngstock are good honest hardworking cows, they are grazed in the spring and summer and housed in cubicles during the winter months. They are milked through a 16/32 herringbone parlour twice a day and are currently averaging 7378kgs at 4.34% butterfat and 3.41% protein with an average cell count of 150. During the winter months we feed a TMR, however my emphasis has always been on grazing for as long as possible in the season and I truly believe there is scope for these cows to go on and produce a lot more milk in a more intensive system.
The herd comprises 35 heifers in milk, 33 second calvers, 36 third calvers & 33 cows with four or more calvings. 43 are freshly calved with 49 due in August, September & October No less than 25 cows are giving 40kgs and above. Genus has supplied all the genetics for the past 20 years and I would like to thank Ian Caddy for all his help and advice over the years. One of the BIG ATTRACTIONS in this sale are my youngstock, they are well grown and display enormous potential. 21 In Calf heifers sell in-calf to top AI sexed sires followed by 38 bulling heifers & 41 heifer calves.

The herd is vaccinated for IBR BVD and Lepto. All of the animals selling are BVD Tag tested. The herd is fully vaccinated for Blue Tongue (2nd dose given on the 23rd June Bultavo 3). The herd has been Johnes screened for many years and is regarded as a low risk herd. The herd is in a four year TB testing area and there has never been TB in the herd.
