GLEBEFARM THE FIRST EDITION Thank you for your interest in Glebefarm Shorthorns. My hope is that the visual approach we’ve taken in this catalogue lets you experience the quality of our stock from afar, and allows you to get a feel for what a Glebefarm Shorthorn could contribute to your herd. This sale marks the first online sale for Glebefarm Shorthorns and it’s the first time we’ve offered breeding females since the herd was established. Every animal has been produced commercially, off grass, and is presented exactly as it is. Shorthorns were first kept at Glebefarm in the early 1900s, and pedigree cattle have been part of the farm ever since. In 2013 we dispersed our Simmentals and made a deliberate choice to return to the breed. We wanted a native breed that thrives on low inputs, and Beef Shorthorn was the natural fit. James and I travelled across the UK and Ireland to select our foundation females from the Millerston Herd, Bushypark, Uppermill, Glenisla and Chapelton herds. We were looking for specific traits: femininity, a good top line, square plates, easy fleshing, a good udder and a quiet temperament. Every female also had to be fit to keep herself, because that’s the kind of cow that works on a commercial farm.
Glebefarm Shorthorns were established in 2017, and our bulls have since been sold privately to pedigree breeders and to commercial farmers locally. Our top price to date came when Glebefarm Sexton sold to Cogent for a five-figure sum. We show selectively due to wider work commitments, on the two occasions we have shown, our stock has performed well. Our first two heifer calves went to the Royal Highland Show in 2019 as maiden heifers. Glebefarm Cherry May stood reserve overall champion from an entry of over 120, and Glebefarm Duchess Molly won the junior heifer class against 18 others. Molly went on to take reserve overall at Balmoral in 2021. We chose our local herd competition as our benchmark, as it judges the whole herd rather than a single animal on a single day. We won best small herd in 2018 and 2019, and took champion and reserve in the 2020 virtual competition with Uppermill Jackie and Glebefarm Duchess Molly. In 2021 and 2022 we were large herd champion and overall champion herd. We returned to the competition this year and were named large herd and overall champion herd once again. Thank you to everyone who bids, buys, and finally, a special thank you to James, whose hard work over the last five years has been central to producing the stock on offer today. Alfie & Elaine Shaw
