Evening Holsteins I have had the pleasure of working with the Wilson family for over 15 years. I’ve watched Charlotte and Emma grow and develop into admirable stockpersons and seen James and Louise build their farm, herd and pedigree into something spectacular. Starting with a small quality herd of cattle milked through a 10/20 parlour they now farm an enviable enterprise with over 1000 head of premium dairy stock, housed and managed in modern, well designed sheds and milked through 9 Fullwood robots, intelligently planned to optimise cow welfare, health and production.

Attention to detail and perfection remains a priority at Evening Holsteins and this extends to herd health. Johnes disease has been actively managed and monitored, including pasteurisation of colostrum, for over 10 years. The herd has long been vaccinated for BVD, Leptospirosis and IBR with tag & test BVD monitoring the past 3 years and very little evidence of these diseases across any ages. I rarely see a lame cow with desirable cow comfort and welfare providing for successful cell counts and udder health. Calf rearing and their ‘start to life’ is fantastic and I can’t recall last seeing a sick calf!

Of most relevance today is the heritage and quality of stock available for sale today. I would be hard pushed to recommend better stock and their pedigrees and the farms plethora of production, genetic and show successes, including a European Champion, speak for themselves.

FOREWORD Over the past 15 years James and Louise Wilson have developed both the Evening Pedigree Holstein herd and the Evening Hill Farm into something very special. At the beginning the herd comprised of 150 quality milkers and now has grown to almost 500 with over 1000 head of livestock now in the herd. The cows are managed in an impressive robotic milking facility and are currently averaging 11756Kgs 4.02%BF 3.34%P SCC70 with a massive emphasises on breeding Robot Ready cows with excellent legs and feet.

Success in the show ring has been equally impressive with individuals winning at International, National and Regional Shows. The herd icon is Riverdane Ashlyns Gold EX95 who won at the last European Show in Belgium, she descends from a classic line of the Tri-Day Ashlyn cow family. Winning Premier Breeder & Exhibitor titles at both UK Dairy Expo and the National Holstein Show places the Evening Holstein herd among the Crème de la Crème of Holstein breeders in the world today.

The successful use of sexed semen has been a big factor in stock numbers rising and this gives you a great opportunity to invest in these outstanding pedigrees. The selection process for this sale has been to offer animals that will appeal to ever milk producer and breeder. All the milking cows and heifers selling are classified Very Good and all have the potential to classify Excellent. They are from cow families that have formed the backbone of the Evening herd and include BABY, WONDER, PRIMROSE, BARBARA & NINA. The highlight in this super group is EVENING ATWOOD JESSIE 2 VG88 2YR (lot 206). Jessie is a nomination heifer and is in excellent form to compete for the highest honours at the National Holstein Show in September.

A powerful well grown group of in-calf heifers follow the milking animals sired by PEPPER, PHARO, DIAMONDBACK, DOORMAN, SISDEKICK & RAGER RED. They carry female sexed pregnancies to LAMBDA, FITZ, CHIEF & MILANO and are bred from the SILVERWINGS, STELLA & SUNRISE families. A great granddaughter of Evening Stanleycup Jennifer EX96 sells (lot 227) sired by Glamour Achieve and due in December to Chief sexed.

The younger heifers in this special sale are very attractive. They are well grown and each one combine’s PRODUCTION, TYPE & LONGEVITY in their impressive pedigrees. Again, all the best cow families are represented in this fine group that are sired

by CRUSHTIME, RUBICON JONES, LIGHTHOUSE, SIDEKICK & KING DOC. Like all the older groups the very BEST have been selected and include two daughters of the European winner Riverdane Ashlyns Gold EX95 sired by Miami & Thunder Storm (lots 246 & 247). A Calvados daughter of the reigning Agriscot Champion Whinchat Snowy Tippy VG89 sells (Lot 248) as does another Calvados daughter from Warnelview Cup Irene EX95 who won at the Royal Highland Show in 2018. Health Status The herd is vaccinated for IBR and BVD and all animals are tested free of BVD for the past 3 years. Johnes testing has been ongoing for the past ten years including pasteurisation of colostrum. The farm is situated in a four year TB testing area and there has never been a case on the farm.

IVF team boosts herd's success 10 out of 10 for Paragon's Advanced Breeding team from farmers impressed by IVF service

J

ames Wilson and the team at Evening Hill Farm in Thursby started using Paragon’s IVF services in 2017.

This was shortly after it was launched following projects which developed an IVF service to work in UK conditions.

The focus of their IVF collections has been their show team, where the benefits have allowed them to continue breeding while ensuring their cows calve ready for show season.

This has involved ovum pick-up on the donors at 5 to 7 weeks in calf and continuing every 2 weeks for 2 to 4 cycles.

The oocytes collected are fertilised the following day, and then cultured for a week while they develop into embryos.

These are selected, graded and frozen ready for transfer just as flushed embryos are.

Over the 12 collections done between the

4 Evening Hill donors, 48 transferable embryos have been frozen, with the 8 collections since the start of 2020 averaging 4.5 frozen embryos.

Charlotte manages the Evening Holstein herd with parents James and Louise and sister Emma.

They decided to try IVF after finding conventional flushing was not as compatible with showing.

“In 2017 we bought a special cow, Riverdane Ashlyns Gold. Because she had a very good pedigree we wanted to do a lot of breeding off her. IVF

seemed a good way to do it," says Charlotte.

Encouraging results convinced them to use IVF more.

The technique has been important for Evening’s show team, but they are looking at using IVF for other cows.

Among the successes is Evening Solomon Ashlyn, a daughter of Ashlyns Gold. “She has had two calves and been shown successfully. She was fourth out of 21 at the UK Dairy Expo in Carlisle in 2019,” says Charlotte.

She gives Paragon’s Advanced Breeding team “10 out of 10”, saying, “We can’t fault them.”
