General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The sale will be held at Welshpool Livestock Market, Buttington, Welshpool. SY21 8SR.

VIEWING: The Sale Cattle will be available for viewing at Welshpool Livestock Market on Friday 6th January.

HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The British Limousin Cattle Society have adopted the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the N.B.A. The Sale is held subject to these rules and the Auctioneers’ General Conditions of Sale, both available on request. In the event of any discrepancy between the two sets of conditions, the N.B.A. Conditions of Sale shall prevail.

INSURANCE: A representative of H&H Insurance Brokers Ltd, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

REGISTRATIONS: All stock in the Sale are registered with the British Limousin Cattle Society, Tel. 02476 696500.

PEDIGREE TRANSFERS: Official Pedigree Transfers will be effected by the Auctioneers and the British Limousin Cattle Society as soon as possible after the Sale. Full pedigrees will be transferred free of charge to all members.

SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK: Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement.

MAJOR REDUCTION SALE from the ELLESMERE HERD Welcome to the major reduction sale of the Ellesmere Limousin herd. Although the sale is classed as a major reduction, we are selling the entire herd but wish to retain the Ellesmere prefix for family sentiment.

A herd started up in 1972 with the foresight of my late father, Graham Lea, in the wake of the 1967 F+M outbreak, which saw all stock on the farm destroyed. He could see that this new beef breed from France was the best way forward for commercial beef production.

Over the next 15 years he earnestly promoted the breed at ground roots level by being one of the earlier members of the Limousin Society and formative officer of the NWM and NW Limousin Club. Also he could see the benefits of performance recording, so from the beginning to the present day all animals in the herd, good or bad, have been performance recorded, therefore giving very accurate performance percentages.

As well as working behind the scenes he was very keen to support local, royal, summer and winter shows in the pedigree and primestock rings and carcase competitions winning many prize cards. Testament to his foresight the breed has risen to its heights of today.

Returning to 1972: A number of half bred Limousin heifers were purchased and a breeding up programme started with the use of MMB AI bulls. 1976 saw the purchase of the herds first stock bull, Wintles Monty from Limousin Pioneer Jack Bedell. Grading up was too slow for father so in the early 1980s he imported two bulls and four heifers from France.

A further two French bred females were introduced in the mid 1980s, and indeed no further females have been purchased since. That fact along with the use of carefully chosen stock bulls and the use of AI has ensured the herd has been as close to a closed herd as you can get. Temperament in our cattle has been another important factor in our breeding programme and many people will vouch for the facility of animals purchased from our herd.

Though not a member of any animal health scheme we have operated a vaccination for calves, receiving Rispoval 4, then breeding females and stock bulls continuing with annual boosters of Leptavoid H and BVD vaccines. There have been no known cases of Johnnes Disease either on the farm or in any animals sold to other breeders. We are in a 1year TB testing area and have never had any positive or inconclusive readings.

The farm has been FABBL and Combinable Crops Assured since its inception, contributing cereals, straw and fodder to our closed herd management .
