General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION: The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6.

VIEWING: The Sale Cattle will be available for viewing at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 2nd October from 4pm - 7pm and morning of the sale.

HOTELS: There are many hotels within the area, ranging from four star to excellent Bed and Breakfast accommodation, a list of which may be found on page 4 of the catalogue.

CONDITIONS OF SALE: The sale will be held subject to the Auction Rules and Conditions of Sale drawn up by the National Beef Association.

INSURANCE: A representative of H&H Insurance Brokers Ltd, will be present at the sale and will be pleased to quote Purchasers for transit and other risks.

METHOD OF SALE: All cattle will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers.

COMMISSIONS: The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions.

DISPERSAL SALE OF THE

EDENHURST CHAROLAIS HERD

together with the Dispersal Sale of the Border Herd Foreword Having been involved with pedigree cattle for fifty years, deciding to disperse the herd has not been an easy decision.

Our Charolais adventure started in the early seventies using Charolais bulls for crossing on commercial cows and we joined the Society in 1973. Our first pedigree females were purchased in 1977 with Aylsham Joyeuse and Glamis Jasmine. Early use of AI bulls proved successful; particularly Dingle Hofmeister, Oldstone Egbert and Fleets Vibrant.

The most significant female purchase was Mountpleasant Arizona whose family later produced Edenhurst Titus. His progeny are still present in the herd today.

Titus’ dam, Miami, was descended from the famous Brampton herd. Another `M’ female to have had a big influence on the herd is Edenhust Miranda, a daughter of Fleets Vibrant.

In May 2011 we bought the Champion bull at Carlisle, Ratoary Ferguson for 10,000gns jointly with our good friends the late Tom Bell and his son Ian. He proved an excellent purchase with his first 10 bulls averaging just over £6000 to a top price of 10,000gns. Easy calving and short gestation length of his progeny proved to be a huge bonus.

At Stirling in February 2014 Vanessa and I purchased Sandelford Harrison from the Henderson family for 17,000gns. We are delighted with his progeny and though young, shows huge promise. We have shown Harrison only once, at the Cumberland County Show, where he achieved the top honour, ‘Champion of Champions’.

Briefly, other notable show successes include:- Overall Champion, Reserve Overall Champion, three Junior Champions, all at Perth. Two Christmas Cracker Champions and top price three times at Cracker sales at Carlisle. Champion Female at May Sale, Carlisle. Edenhurst Solitaire won Supreme Champion at the National Charolais Show at Kirriemuir. Edenhurst Cognac won Reserve Supreme Champion at the National Charolais World Congress RHAS 2012.

Over the years the breeding policy has been to retain only the best cattle as herd replacements.

Herd Health Status: • Herd last tested clear from TB in 2014 • Currently on a 4 year TB testing interval • Member of SAC Premium Cattle Health Scheme • Accredited free from BVD • Routinely vaccinating against BVD since 2015 • Routinely vaccinating against IBR since 2012 • Routinely vaccinating against Lepto since 2005 and the calves, where applicable, have been IBR and pneumonia vaccinated • Johnes testing level – 1 • The herd is also fully performance recorded through Breedplan.

We are presenting cattle with proven milking ability and a high herd health status.

Any cattle which have not been PD’d prior to the sale will be PD’d and their results will be announced at time of sale.

This sale is the most significant ‘complete’ dispersal sale of a Charolais Herd to be held in the North of the country for many years and is worthy of buyers attention.

The quality of cattle on offer is outstanding and the breeding lines are second to none. The growth, and fleshing ability together with sound temperament and excellent maternal traits through the herd make the cattle especially attractive to anyone intending to establish a new herd or enhance an established herd.

The herd has maintained pace with modern breeding and the cattle are well grown with excellent conformation, without compromising their locomotion.

The cows are a true breeding herd, with a genuine calving pattern and ability to rear calves naturally from milk.

EXPLANATORY NOTES FOR CATALOGUES Only British Charolais BREEDPLAN EBVs can be validly compared between Charolais herds.

ESTIMATED BREEDING VALUES (EBVS) The EBV is the best estimate of an animal's genetic merit for that trait.

ACCURACY An accuracy value (Acc) is presented with every EBV and gives an indication of the amount of information that has been used in the calculation of that EBV. The higher the accuracy the lower the likelihood of change in the animal's EBV as more information is analysed for that animal or its relatives.

CALVING EASE Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. More positive EBVs are favourable and indicate easier calving.

DIR: Direct calving ease indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny. Using a bull in the Top 1% for CE direct (+15.5) is predicted to result in approximately 15% fewer assisted calvings in 2 year old heifers compared with using a bull in the Bottom 1% (-18.8). This range is predicted to be smaller in cows. Remember that the dam’s genetics and management are significant factors influencing calving ease in any mating.

DTRS: Daughter’s calving ease indicates how well the animal produces daughters that have easier calving.

BIRTH AND FERTILITY GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate shorter gestation lengths which generally relate to easier calving and increased growth after birth.

BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the lower the likelihood of a difficult birth.

This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.

SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity.

Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.

GROWTH MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV is indicative of their daughter’s milking ability as it affects the 200-day weight of their calves.

200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.

400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.

600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.

MWT: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Moderate or larger EBVs are generally more favourable.

CARCASE EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate better muscling on animals.

FAT: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.

RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.

IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.

Terminal Index The BCCS Terminal index is aimed at a commercial herd using Charolais bulls over large framed, mixed breed cows to breed steers and heifers to finish at 18 months of age. All progeny are destined for slaughter and no replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease while finishing steers at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system supplemented with extra rations during the finishing phase.

Use this index in a commercial herd to produce progeny for slaughter. The index has moderate emphasis on easier calving (ie getting a live calf with minimal human interference) while producing calves that will then grow quickly to market specifications at around 18 months of age. The index is focused on slaughter animals and does not account for maternal traits and is therefore not suited to breeding replacement females.

If you are using smaller framed cows or heifers in your herd, then you should also put extra emphasis on a higher calving ease direct EBV when selecting a sire using this index.

Self Replacing Index The BCCS Self Replacing index is aimed at a Charolais herd breeding steers to finish at 16 months of age.

Replacement females are selected from within the herd. There is some emphasis on calving ease and maternal traits while finishing steers for slaughter at around 680 kg live weight (375 kg carcase weight) using a pasture based production system.

This Self Replacing index is also suitable to using Charolais sires over mixed breed cows where replacement females are sourced from within the herd. There may be some hybrid vigour expressed in the progeny depending on the breed type of the cows used. Therefore you should consider placing extra emphasis on the Calving Ease EBVs (more positive) of the sire to allow for possible heavier birth weights of his calves due to hybrid vigour.

Use this index in both commercial and pedigree herds where you are balancing the requirements of selecting replacement females while also producing animals for slaughter.

Charolais EBV ratios have been incorporated with the Estimated Breeding Values (EBV) to assist breeders in making their selection decisions when purchasing Charolais cattle. The Charolais EBV ratio for each trait shows that animal`s breeding value for that trait in relation to the current published breed average.

The average for each trait is 100, and the approximate range between the bottom 1% and the top 1% is between 70 and 130.

The British Charolais BREEDPLAN Estimated Breeding Values contained in this Sale Catalogue were compiled by the Agricultural Business Research Institute (ABRI) from data supplied by the breeders. Neither the British Charolais Cattle Society nor the ABRI oversee or audit the collection of this data.
