Notice to all Visitors and Traders Please read and observe the following: • Excessive dirty vehicles will not be allowed entry, therefore ensure vehicle is clean before arrival. • All vehicles transporting livestock will be subject to a documentation check before entry to market site. • All visitors and traders must ensure they wear clean clothing and footwear before entering market site. • All visitors and traders using car park areas please use main entrance. • All persons delivering livestock to mart must park on the hardcore area at the back of the site and then proceed along the designated route to the biosecurity control next to the supervisors office. • Hauliers and farmers delivering livestock must disinfect their boots before and after loading or unloading. • Livestock purchased or unsold will not be allowed to move unless an authorised “pass slip” has been issued by the main office. • No livestock will be allowed to remain on the premises after a sale. • Only staff, livestock hauliers, owners or their agents are permitted to load or unload livestock. • Wash hands thoroughly when leaving livestock pennage areas. • Please observe our staff’s instructions at all times.

General Information & Sale Notes LOCATION - The Sale will be held in the Borderway Mart, Carlisle Cumbria. Motorists should leave the M6 at Junction 43 and follow CARLISLE signs. The Market is on the left hand side of the road within 1/4 mile of M6. CONDITIONS OF SALE - Sold under the conditions of sale as recommended by The Livestock Auctioneers’ Association. COMMISSIONS - The Auctioneers will dutifully execute commissions to purchase for buyers unable to attend the sale personally, upon receipt of written instructions. METHOD OF SALE - All sheep will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and strictly in catalogue order, unless any alteration is announced by the Auctioneers. SETTLEMENT AND CLEARANCE OF STOCK - Settlement in full is due immediately at the close of Sale. No animal may leave the Sale Premises without an official ‘Pass Slip’, obtainable only from the Auctioneers upon settlement. VIEWING - Sheep will be available at the market for viewing from 1pm on Monday 29th December.

Gimmers offered are bred by or in lamb to 3 noted sires: R27 Midlock Magic was purchased for £25,000. Magic was BFL sire of the year 2024 and consistently breeds top quality mule lambs. Magic bred 1st prize mule lambs which have won the Royal Highland Show 3 years running (2023,2024,2025)

S1 Ballytober Hijack purchased for £28,000gns. Hijacks progeny topped at £7000 in the backend with V17 Carry House. Hijack has bred good skinned, cocky lugged mules including 2nd prize Royal Highland Show ewe lamb only beaten by a magic bred lamb. Hijack put 9 in Carry House top pen and 4 in The Steels. Both flocks selling them at Hexham Auction Mart.

T38 Carry House purchased for £18,000 alongside the Coultermuir flock. T38s full brother is R5 Carry House is breeding exceptional mules at Nunscleugh. R43 is T38’s full sister who holds the female record at 15,0000gns who bred T2 Carry House who is doing a great job for the Barely and Honeymoor flocks. In Carry Houses he bred powerful sheep with strong heads. Only tupping a handful of blackface ewes and putting 4 lambs in our top pen at Hexham and leicesters selling to £3000 and £3200 at Hawes. Magic, Hijack and T38 Carry House have all been used hard in Blackface and Leicester flocks this year as all are top proven sires.

V39 Midlock was bought out of Hawes this year alongside the West Biggins flock for £8500. An exciting purchase which is full of great mule blood. V39 Midlocks dam was purchased from Highberries flock. His pedigree includes G34 Midlock, Z4 Hundith, Highberries Highlander and Carry House Jackpot with his sire being M1 Riddings. He sired the 2nd prize mule lamb at the Highland show.

V4 Dawyck - Very good T1 Hewgill son retained for our own use. His mother is H38 Dawyck, she is also mother to P56 Dawyck who is breeding excellent mules for Shitlington and Nunnerie. As well as having lambs in the Overburns Champion pen Stirling this year. V4 is a big flashy lamb, tremendous black and white with the breeding to match. We are very much looking forward to seeing his offspring T29 Shitlington - Bought from Kelso Ram sale for £6200 this time, a tup with an excellent carcass and an extremely sharp look. He came highly recommended for his mules. T29 was only given 15 bf ewes as a lamb and he produced 2 mule lambs in Shitlington’s champion pen at Hexham and 10 lambs in their top run of 70.

Foreward: My father, Robin, moved to Carry House in 1961 and brought two ewe lambs with him to start the flock. By the mid 1970s he was selling shearlings at Hexham, having some success breeding Mules and getting ambitious! After some disappointing purchases a plain white-faced tup was retained because he bred the best Mules and he was used on two ewes. Despite misgivings from local breeders, at a time when there was only one type of Leicester and blue cocky types were in demand, the experiment worked and the resulting ewe lambs became the basis of the flock today. From that time the flock was split and no cross-over of bloodlines took place. The remainder of the ewes became the Traditional type and despite a successful period, they gradually dwindled away. Those at the Sale will make their own judgement on how the sheep look but I’m proud of the way they’re bred and the bloodlines in them. I’ve been ruthless in not retaining daughters from any tup whose Mules I didn’t like – no matter how much they cost or how good their Leicesters. In my opinion ewes which breed good correct sheep (and whose sons cross well) to different sires are more important than tups, so embryo transfer and line breeding have been used to strengthen and stabilise the top breeding and milky lines. The importance of female families has become more apparent as I’ve got older and if there’s one lesson I can pass on to young breeders – this is it! The ewe lambs are a complete dispersal with none retained or embryos stored. All are embryos flushed from the top females before sale last December along with the last 2 frozen ones from our old favourite K42. Virtually all descend from Midlock G34 via the homebred tups, Jackpot (& sisters J46, K41 & K42), Flash & Ronaldo along with Asby Hall L1. I wish everyone well with their purchases and look forward to seeing progeny from them in years to come. Reference to Sires: Midlock G34 - Purchased for £10,000 with Steel and has had a major influence on both flocks with most of our females carrying that bloodline. Quite a few are linebred to him after homebred tups Flash L8, Jackpot J2, N56 & M9 were used in later years. His first crop of sons sold to £23,000 & £15,000 and the following year Jackpot J2 made £14,000 with a half-share bought back later. Jackpot’s brother J1 was Hawes Champion that day before selling for £5,500 and being very influential in Northern Ireland for Holmview & The Fields. Jackpot’s brother K1 sold for £12,000 and did well for Maqueston, Forebrae & Allanfauld. G34 was a very consistent Mule breeder, a trait he passed on to his progeny and his semen is still in demand today. Highberries Highlander G1 - A half-share was purchased privately from Neil Marston and he turned out to be a top Mule breeder for us both – daughters have been Champion at the Highland, Yorkshire, Alston & Penrith Shows. Sons topped at £11,000 for L1 which bred consistently well for Spurrigg & Yore House with others at £10,000 for both flocks. Carry House Jackpot J2 - Shared with Riddings after being sold for £14,000, Jackpot’s success can be measured by the number of top breeding progeny in the flock book. Sons sold to £23,000, £13,000 & £10,000 (& grandsons to £40,000). Bred from a Hundith Z4 gimmer bought from Highberries, his Mules were top class – in 2018 he bred 22 in our Champion pen of 25 at Hexham and the Penrith Show Champion in 2020. He also bred show winners and top pen lambs at Riddings every year. Jackpot’s four sisters have left a huge legacy in the Carry House flock with K41 & K42 the best two breeding ewes we’ve had.

Carry House Flash L8 - Flash was retained and a half share sold to Steel. A son of Highlander G1, he was bred from a daughter of J1 (Jackpot’s brother) and was another who could breed big correct Leicesters as well as good Mules. As a result he was used extensively in both flocks with great success. He sired £28,000 Carry House Ronaldo P1 (shared with Temain & Mistyburn) as well as his brother P3, who has done well at Sealhouses. Many daughters and grand-daughters can be seen in the female pedigrees.

Asby Hall L1 - A son of top Mule breeder Smearsett K1, he was bought at Kirby Stephen for £11,000 with Steel. In 2020 he and Flash had 12 each in the top pen of 25, including the Peebles show Champion. His females were some of the best breeders in the flock.

Carry House Ronaldo P1 - Sired by Flash out of Farden Popeye’s ET sister. Originally sold for £28,000 with a half-share retained & re-sold for £9,000 in October. Bred good to dark Mules and his sons have crossed particularly well (selling to £18,000). Daughters were in demand last December, topping at £15,000 for ewes, £9,000 for gimmers & £5,000(2) for lambs.

Midlock Magic R27 - Bought with Steel for £25,000, he ranks as the best all-round tup used at Carry House, breeding powerful, correct, modern Leicesters and some of the best Mules we’ve had. Daughters have stood 1st in the Highland Show NEMSA class for the last 3 years with this year’s winner going on to be Champion and taking the same award at Penrith. Magic and his lambs have twice won the Penrith Progeny Show and a daughter by him won 1st at Agri-Expo in November.

Ballytober Hijack S1 - Sired by Hewgill R4 & out of a ewe bred at Midlock by Midlock Big Yin H12, he was bought for £28,000 with Steel after Andy Hunter judged him and his Mules at the Antrim Progeny Show. He sired 9 of the top 25 Mules this year including 2 of the show lambs.
